Today has felt a lot like Friday, which is disappointing considering it’s only Wednesday. BUT! The good news is that Wednesday happens to be host to one of the best parties around…
… and it means that I still have a few more days to finish buying and wrapping presents. I may have mentioned that I like the last minute rush? Well, I must because I do it every.single.year. But enough about my procrastinator ways; let’s get to the food! I was originally going to do a recap of what I ate in Vegas until I realized that I have almost no pictures of what I ate while I was there. An early allergy scare coupled with being too shy to take pictures of my meals when others are around means this is pretty much all I have from my whole trip…
Typical yogurt mess packed to go – Starbucks latte.
… and the only reason I managed to snap that gem is because there was a moment where no one was sitting next to me on the plane #bloggerfail. So, we’re just going to have to settle for what I’ve been eating since I’ve been back. I’ve actually been putting in more of an effort to switch up my meals, but there are some things that I haven’t messed with. Breakfasts, for example, have been the same old, same old…
Plain Greek yogurt – banana – blueberries – Puffins – Kashi Cinnamon Harvest – roasted almond butter.
As have my kryptonites…
My watermelon addiction is still going strong (although I’ve managed to cut back to mini melons), and the batch of applesauce that I made last night with around 10 apples is about half gone at this point. That’s 5 apples in less than 24 hours. How embarrassing… In light of that, I guess I shouldn’t mention how much Greek yogurt I go through on a daily basis… I don’t want you to lose any respect you might have for me…
Instead, I’m going to talk about some of the real food that I’ve been putting more of an effort into eating/making lately. You guys know I’m a big fan of breakfast and have no problem eating it for every meal, but I’ve been told that variety is the spice of life, so I decided to give it a shot with lunch…
Ezekiel English muffin – egg fried in coconut oil – avocado – random veggies.
… and then dinner…
Sesame chicken stir fry made with soba noodles, toasted sesame oil, chicken, and random veggies.
Sadly, that was about as much novelty as my delicate nerves could handle (;)), so I resorted back to my tried and true staples. Daily capps…
Nightlycereal bowls…
And lots of my favorite snack ever…
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to get some baking done. I’ve been craving snickerdoodles like crazy lately, so I think it’s high time I satisfied that craving. Hope you guys are doing well, and I’ll see you tomorrow!
. – . – . – .
How do you feel about photographing what you eat when others are around? I have no problem when it’s my parents, but anyone else and you won’t see me breaking out the camera any time soon.
Have you started your holiday baking yet? What did you make?
Have you tried any new foods lately? If not, what haven’t you been able to get enough of?
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
Both your lunch and dinner look absolutely amazing!!
I always wonder when is the “right time” to feel comfortable taking pictures of my food in front of others. As of right now, I generally only take pictures around my immediate family and my boyfriend. Otherwise, I worry about people thinking that I am weird/odd. Maybe I should get over that feeling! 😉
rachel
Oh my. I just want to give up. Your freedom with food is remarkable and my rigid ways are so set I’m just doomed. I’ve even been “losing ” some control lately because I’m assuming the lack of variety? I do eat enough, so it must either be this urge for sweets or out of ordinary or just boredom.
Can I ask if you buy organic? My grocery store (one store) now only has the NOT organic stuff. Actually it doesn’t have organic or free range anything which is a disaster since I eat a lot of chicken, etc.
My Christmas turkey will be grain fed, roasted with skin on and was processed in a packed, dirty proccessing plant. And I’ll be “odd” if I don’t eat it. I’m losing my mind 🙁
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Don’t give up – not ever. I know it might seem like things are never going to get better sometimes (I’ve been there too), but they will… you just have to give it time, face your fears, and realize that nothing bad comes out of it.
There are certain things that I buy organic, but for the most part I’m not too fussy. Honestly, stressing over stuff like that is probably doing you way more harm than eating non-organic/free range.
Lisa
I think it depends who I’m around! Sometimes it’s a little weird, but with other friends I don’t care at all. I need those ezekiel english muffins! I love them even more than the bread! I totally felt like yesterday was Friday as well! I think it’s because the holidays are coming up so fast!
Molly@This Life Is Sparkling
Nightly cereal bowls are the best!
Ashley @ AlmostVegGirlie
I feel really weird taking photos of my food around anyone, even my family sometimes, but I think it’s a lot easier for me to do the cell phone/Instagram photo thing because it’s less obvious! I’m more okay doing it at home but I almost never get to in restaurants because it just feels a little awkward.
I just tried the Vega dark chocolate-covered saviseeds recently and at first I thought they were gross but now I’m loving them. They almost remind me of peanut M&Ms and they’re pretty simple and healthy but I’ve only been eating a few a day because they’re so darn expensive!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve been curious about those savi seeds, but I was afraid of spending the money and not liking them. I guess it’s an acquired taste? I’ll probably end up giving them a shot just to kill the curiosity!
Rachel @ Eat, Learn, Discover!
I will never understand how you eat watermelon in winter! But then again I get ice cream cravings all the time in winter…
I did some holiday baking before I left NYC to go back home for the holidays. Wish I had the time to bake some more! (and extra people to eat the goods…)
And, I totally know hoe you feel, being embarrassed to break out the camera in front of others. I was at first, but then I decided “screw it, these people are my friends, I don’t really care”. I won’t necessarily take pictures in a professional or other important setting, but I love photographing food – so among friends and family, I’ve pushed myself to just get over it 😉
Meghan @ After the Ivy League
Your dinner looks absolutely delicious! I finally cooked up a big batch of chicken to have more “real” food available to me.. throwing some into a stir fry for dinner sounds absolutely delicious. And I’ve been craving snickerdoodles like crazy too! Yesterday I just told my mom I insisted on making them for Christmas this year, will be doing that this weekend!
Devon @ Health in Equilibrium
That English muffin concoction looks wicked! For a filling meal, you really can’t beat hearty bread, egg and avocado. You have totally inspired me to get into the yogurt bowls this Christmas too. I can’t get enough!!
Holly
Oh my goodness! I have a hard time taking pictures of my food out in public. I try to be sneaky or I just try to ignore everyone around me and pretend that I am all by myself… if that makes sense? Like when you are a baby and you think you are hidden if you hide your eyes? Hahaha.
Your applesauce looks amazing, I need to get on board with that.
I haven’t even started my holiday baking, I will be in overdrive this weekend to get it done!
And my newest obsession is my morning oats with almond butter and all natural fig jam. CAN’T.GET.ENOUGH….
Anna @AnnaTheApple
Oh god I get soo embarrassed taking photos of my food. I try and do it really stealthy. It’s fine in front of family but when it’s the general public or people at work I just freak out. I’m not a big fan of eating in front of people either. I just hate judgement.
And I eat four apples like every day so I don’t see anything wrong in your applesauce addiction hehe.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Four? Yes! Thank you! If you tell me that you can scarf down half a watermelon in a single sitting, then you’re my new favorite person 😀
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
So, I’m pretty much drooooling. I’ve never tried Ezekiel english muffins – I need to get some!! When I first started the blog, I didn’t tell many people so I never broke out the camera. Now, it depends who I’m with and where I am. If I’m with my close friends/roommate that know about the blog, I have no problem. And usually I’m fine with it at a restaurant depending on the situation ha ha.
Danielle @ Clean Food Creative Fitness
Cereal bowls are my favorite. And don’t worry about the apple obsession, I have to have one at least once a day!
Kat
Dont be ashamed by how much applesauce you eat, because that stuff is seriously addicting!! Im making another batch today, but am going to wrap it up in some dough to make an apple braid. I have a christmas party tonight at church with my youth group and we are watching Elf, I thought they would enjoy an apple braid as well 🙂 That is if I dont eat all of the applesauce first!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin
Oh no – an allergy scare?! What happened?
I used to be super shy about taking pictures around others, but I’m a lot more okay with it now. I have no problems taking pictures around my family and in restaurants. But if I’m with a group of people who don’t know about my blog, I probably won’t take pictures.
I’ve done so much holiday baking already! Snickerdoodles, molasses cookies, maple almond butter cookies, and gingerbread are some of my latest. And I plan on doing more baking tomorrow. 😀
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Pesky allergies. We went out to eat at a place that apparently wasn’t all that careful with separating their food, so while my dish didn’t have any peanuts in it, there must have been some cross-contamination or something because I ended up breaking out in a rash and getting all short of breath. Unpleasant.
And what snickerdoodles recipe did you use? I’m on the hunt for a good one!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin
Ahh that’s awful! I’m so sorry that happened. I can’t believe the restaurant was so irresponsible though. Usually when I tell a restaurant I have a nut allergy, they go out of their way to take every precaution possible so that my meal isn’t contaminated.
I used How Sweet Eats’ recipe! 🙂 The link is here: http://www.howsweeteats.com/2010/12/fat-fluffy-snickerdoodles.
Laura
That’s so funny because I have no problem photographing around strangers, but I would NEVER take out my camera and snap a picture of food in front of my parents!
Jessy
That’s one reason why I could never be a food blogger – I’d feel ridiculous taking pics of my meals in front of others. I only take pics of food occasionally when I’m traveling (when it’s a country’s signature meal or something like that) and at home when we have Christmas dinner (but I photograph it before anyone arrives).
MizMELON
I smiled at your watermelon addiction.
we need to start a support group 🙂
Alexandra
AGREED! Watermelon seriously needs to be in season all year round. I’m obsessed! 😀
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m completely down with that. Although… I don’t know if I want to be helped 😯
Lucie
I would like to live with you and eat your food. Haha, seriously, everything looks so good. I am dying to cook your applesauce, so I will do this on the weekend, since I am on holidays in 5 hours for SEVENTEEN DAYS 🙂 The noodles look totally pro!
Chelsie S
I’m loving on salads again thanks to a new-to-me salad dressing (pineapple curry) — complete with grapes, corn, green mix that included shredded cabbage and red carrot. Mmmm. Oh. And all over the Havarti cheese and liverwurst (not together!!) and a box of mac n cheese may have found its way into my cart last night.
I knew you’d finally switch it up a bit. I’m glad you didn’t transition until you were ready. 🙂
As for pictures, depends on who I’m with and whether or not they know I’m more than a little insane. Sometimes I try to at least muffle it. Just a bit. 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
!! Giving Mac&Cheese another shot?! Ooo now you’ve got me craving it too! It’s almost dinner time and I have none in the house though 🙁
Khushboo
Delicious eats as usual and clearly I am as much of a Greek yogurt fiend as your yogurt bowls always stand out to me most :)! I have been eating SO much of it lately, along with cottage cheese, hummus, sourdough bread, spinach and turkey! Random mix of foods but they all seem to feature daily in my meals!
That bit about taking pics in public made me laugh! I have no problem taking pics if I’m with my family/close friends but at the same time, I sometimes won’t if whipping out my phone will detract from the conversation. The funny thing is that I’ve noticed that more and more people are taking pics of food in restaurants that it seems to have become the norm- works out well for us bloggers ;)!
Miss Polkadot
Last minute present buying? Yes, definitely me, too, and it makes me anxious. I really didn’t have to worry about many presents this year at all seeing as I allied up with my sister for many people. She had ideas on what to get them and we split up the costs between us. But guess whom I haven’t gotten a gift for yet? Yes, my sister …
Okay, now you’re making me want to do some holiday baking, too, though I leave in just a couple of days and don’t really have anybody to share with until then. I did some baking at the beginning of Christmas time but not much after which is sooo unusual for me. Guess I’ll have to make up for it in January – hey, people love (holiday) cookies all year round, right?!
I am SO shy about taking food pictures in front of anybody but my relatives as well. Maybe it’s also because the whole blogging about it isn’t quite usual in Germany yet. Hm …
Jessie
Okay, please do not hate me… but I’m not a fan of watermelon. I mean I like the flavor when it comes to candy, but I just can’t eat it on it’s own. I’ve tried to make my taste buds enjoy it, as well as cottage cheese, but they just aren’t giving in. It’s the effort that counts though right???
p.s. please come cook me your dinner. I know it may be a simple recipe, but I just can’t see mine turning out as delicious as yours 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I could never hate you, Jessie. Besides, it just means more watermelon for me, right? 😛 <3 <3
Jessie
Always thinking smart =)
Shreya @ rushofendorphins
I can’t get enough of cherries and grapes! They never last for anyone else 😉
I also lose self control with watermelon…. I’m never satisfied till its all gone. Ha ha!
Miranda @ Biting Life
Oh my gosh, that chicken stir-fry looks awesome! I’m a huge sucker for Asian food.
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table
I am so glad I’m not the only “crazy” that like the last minute Christmas shopping. It’s like a little high! I’ll be doing mine Saturday. 🙂
I spent the entire night baking… and maybe doing a little sampling… 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Sampling is a must. I refuse to bake if I can’t sample 😛
Kate
Oooh that egg sandwich looks WONDERFUL! English muffins are honestly one of my favorite things…I miss them, the GF version just isn’t the same. I actually bought some eggs for baking with today though, and now I really wanna fry one up for a sandwich! I agree about breakfast – not to be messed with 😀
Brittany
I used to be whoaa shy about taking pictures..but now I do it like no one is watching. HA! Nothing will stop me from getting that perfect photo. I’ve baked some cupcakes, and I made some fudge..YUM!
Jess(ica)
I gotta be honest, I would be self conscious taking pics of food in public. But I think that may have something to do with the ED- I don’t like drawing too much attention to myself when it comes to food. Gonna have to get over that…
Snickerdoodles are heaven. Oh yes, indeed.
I’m planning on doing some last minute holiday baking this weekend- I want to bake some gingerbread men, and maybe some snowball cookies. I don’t know if you’ve ever had them; they’re vanilla shortbread balls rolled in powdered sugar. Some people put nuts in them, which I like, but my sister doesn’t so I probably won’t put them in. Try ’em, they’ll change your life lol
To answer your other questions…I’ve been keeping up a few routines lately that I’m rather proud of (why hello Recovery! *smile*) I eat cereal, fruit and yogurt bowls every morning for breakfast now. I just can’t get enough of it, and now I don’t know how or why I let ED keep me from this goodness for such a long time. It sure ain’t happening again, I can tell you that. Aaaand: sweet potatoes. Did I mention how delicious sweet potatoes are? How would I know? Because I’ve been buying and baking them into wedges in large batches every Sunday night, then eating them for dinner throughout the week. And come to find out, paired with a turkey burger panini (with bread….real, actual bread.) they make the most DELICIOUS meal. And what do you know…nothing bad’s happened. The world is still turning. I’m okay 🙂
Then of course, I HAVE to, absolutely must have my peanut butter/banana on toast every.single.day. I swear, it’s like one of the highlights of my day. Seriously, I’m not kidding lol The way you’re embarrassed about going through Greek yogurt is how I am with Jif All Natural Crunchy Peanut Butter. It’s just ridiculous. I go through a jar a week, I’m pretty sure. Then there’s hummus….we’re just not going to go there. Suffice to say, I’ve spent more money than I should on copious amounts of hummus. That stuff makes EVERYTHING taste good 😀
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
!!! All of those things are SO great to hear, Jess! Recovery is definitely kind of awesome 😉 Oh, and I’ve never had snowball cookies, but I adore shortbread so I’m going to look into them!
rachel
Hi, how do you reheat the wedges? Just in the microwave? Just curious. Thanks.
Jess(ica)
I’ve reheated them in both the microwave and toaster oven- they turn out great both ways 🙂
Olivia @ Life As Liv
Haha, not going to lie, I get embarrassed when snapping pictures of food with people I don’t know. I can see the judgment cross peoples’ faces…they think I’m just an instagrammer…which I am. 😉
Ellie@Fit for the Soul
I’m a procrastinator with annnnyy holiday because it’s still kind of overwhelming to prepare stuff since I’m not used to ANY OF IT! And man, those noodles look delicious~and I love simple sandwiches for lunch like your english muffin one, especially if the egg is all runny–but I’m “fasting” those since pregnant women can’t have raw egg 😛 And I’ve become a looooot better about photographing food in public! It’s weird, it’s almost like I don’t care if people watch me anymore and usually think to myself, “hehe i bet they’re confused right now”, and that part is kind of fun. 😀
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hehe that’s seriously the sweetest way to look at it. I honestly don’t think that most people care, since I’ve seen my fair share of people taking pictures of their meals in public places and no one seems to notice… I’m just shy 😕
Sarah @PickyRunner
Ummm snickerdoodles are my FAVORITE COOKIE EVER. Good for you for giving into that craving… they’re worth it 🙂 I’ve always found it hard to eat different foods too. I’m a creature of habit. Nothing I can say about that. At least you’re getting a mix of different things so your diet is still relatively varied even if you eat the same things every day!
kaity @ kaityscooking
haha i always feel weird when taking pics of my food depending who im with.. my friend the other day was like r u really taking a pic of your coffee? i felt cool haha.. and snickerdoodles yumm i always crave them during the holidays
Hollie
I’m glad I’m not the only one who waits until the last minute to pick out and wrap gifts LOL. Your photos are seriously amazing. Even if you hated one of your meals you would sure as hell have me foolwed with how awesome the photography is.
lindsay
my phone has a great app so i can sneak my photos. But, i easily could live off almond butter, banana, coffee, carrots, wine, and GF toast. Odd , yes?
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
Slightly shameful, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried a snickerdoodle. I should get on that, shouldn’t I? I’m going shopping for baking supplies tomorrow; I’m in charge of desserts for 2 family dinners plus I want to create small home-baked presents sooo…I will be spending a lot of time in the kitchen the next few days. 😀
I’m surprisingly ok with whipping out the camera around people. My parents/boyfriend/friends/classmates all know, and when I do it in public places a lot of people don’t seem to notice/comment. I think with Instagram and whatnot, taking pictures of your food is starting to become a bit normalized! I was out with friends for sushi Monday night, and a friend of my friend saw me taking pictures and asked me about it. I told him and he thought it was cool – I’ve never gotten any sort of negative or “that’s weird” sort of reaction for taking food pictures in public.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Well that’s comforting to know. I honestly do think it’s all in my head, but I’m super shy in general so I think that might contribute to it. Oh, and you definitely need to try snickerdoodles. If you’re a fan of cinnamon and sugar, you’ll love them 🙂
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables
That dinner looks delicious! I have no problem photographing anything. I’m pretty shameless! lol
Nicole
I think the reason I don’t blog, even though I have a LOT to say on all of the ED/recover/healthy living-type topics, is because I would feel weird taking pictures of food, would definitely not be able to do it around other people lol, nor would I have the patience to do it almost everyday. Too busy anyhow with work and school! My blog would just be a slew of words in a boring Word document-type format 😉
Recently tried unflavored protein powder in my morning oats and was intrigued… but I’ve had it clump up a few times, so when I chew it, it’s so gummy it squeaks between my teeth! GAH! SO GROSS. It’s like eating a tasteless piece of meat randomly with oatmeal. Never again! 😀
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Blogging and picture taking can definitely be a pain in the butt, but it has its perks as well 🙂 And I’ve only tried protein powder in oats a few times with the same thing happening – it always clumped. Have you tried adding egg whites? That used to be my absolute favorite way to eat oats. You can hardly taste the egginess at all, and it gives the oats the most wonderful texture. Ack. Miss them!
Nicole
I’ve been tempted to try that! But I always worried it *would* have an eggy taste to it. I’ll give it a go. Can’t be worse than the protein powders, right?! 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Weeeellll, it might be slightly eggy, but it’s easy enough to mask if you add a banana or some vanilla flavoring to it.
Alex @ therunwithin
your killing me with that watermelon, I would eat it right through the screen if i could. ps. expect an email tonight!
Aimee
I too am a procrastinator when it comes to Christmas shopping – still not done yet and only 5 days till Christmas Eve – EEk!! So therefore you know what my answer to holiday baking is – yup still haven’t started that either!! I guess I just work better under pressure!
Foods I can’t seem to get enough of- raw almonds! My favorite snack!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha that’s my excuse every single time as well, and while I still manage to get everything done in the end, sometimes I wish I could start a bit earlier to avoid the stress!
Caitlin
I made snickerdoodles tonight too! Love the way they make my apartment smell 🙂 New foods that have entered my life recently are sandwiches for lunch….trying to change it up and introduce more carbs back into my diet. I’ve made gingerbread butterscotch cookies, hot cocoa cookies, snickerdoodles, and still have a gingerbread chocolate cake and pb blossoms to go….and I can photograph around my fam or boy but still working on trying it with other people…feel kind of weird around my friends but want to get over that soon.
