. WIAW… round two .

May 18, 2011 by Amanda @ .running with spoons. 61 Comments

Hey hey! πŸ˜€Β Today is what is quickly becoming my favorite day of the week (right behind Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) – Wednesday! And you know what that means – it’s time for another edition of…

Yipee!

Honestly, it’s getting kind of ridiculous how much I’m starting to look forward to WIAW’s.Β I really enjoyed the first one I did last week, and I always love coming across them on other blogs, so I’m pretty sure this is going to become a weekly thing for me. Thanks Jenn!

. – . – . – .

I always wake up around 5:30-6, and the very first thing I do (after the requisite trip to the bathroom, of course) is get started on breakfast. I’m super picky when it comes to my oats, and my favorite (steel cut) take a bit longer to prepare, so I get those going and make myself a cup of tea while I’m at it. Bam.

Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice

Then I go off to spend some time on the computer or yoga mat, and before I know it, breakfast. is. served.

A mix of steel cut/Scottish oats, banana, honey, and roasted almond butter.

Anyone who skips breakfast? Craaaaaaazy.

The morning just happens to be my favorite time to work out, but I’m definitely not one of those people that can do it on an empty stomach (seriously, how do you guys manage?!). So, after letting breakfast digest for a bit, it’s time to get some exercise in, depending on what I’m feeling up for that day…

[insert 45 minute bike ride and random jumble of core/ab work here]

Then? More food! It’s weird. Exercise basically kills my appetite, and I don’t usually find myself hungry right afterwards. Still, I know my body needs the fuel, so I grab something that goes down easy…

… like a chocolate protein smoothie &Β Cookie Dough BallΒ (yes, I have a problem)

My mind is running blank as to what I did after that, so let’s just pretend it was something productive and move right along to lunch, shall we? I’m not a huge fan of pasta, but I got hit by a random noodle craving this afternoon, which led to this bowl of goodness being born:

Egg white noodles mixed with olive oil, marinara sauce, and hummus, accompanied by a bowl of cottage cheese mixed with nooch and a salad. Note: that laughable spit of salad is only there to represent the bigger-than-my-head bowl of salad that I actually had… it just didn’t look as pretty.

Mmm. Tasty; and I think I’m good on pasta for the next, oh, 3 months? Like I said, not the biggest pasta fan, but a trip to Italy might change my mind, just in case anyone is offering πŸ˜‰

Sometime after lunch (or maybe it was during?)I realized that I’d been neglecting housework for… quite some time, and that my place had consequently fallen into a state of orderly disorder. That being the case, I spent most of the afternoon doing various chores that I hate-but-at-the-same-time-kinda-enjoy [read: vacuuming, dusting, laundry, tidying], and worked up quite the appetite while I was at it.

Greek yogurt with banana and trail mix (sunflower seeds, dried apple, raisins, chocolate chips)

I don’t know about you guys, but housework makes me hungry. I can run 3 miles or spend an hour at the gym and be perfectly fine, but 20 minutes of vacuuming and I’m ready to gnaw my arm off. So, in order to keep all my appendages in tact, I snacked the afternoon away.

Cranberry Kombucha & Cocoa Ginger Snaps

When dinner time rolled around, the very last thing I wanted to do was spend more time in the kitchen cooking an elaborate meal, so I grabbed the first things that sounded good, threw them together in a haphazard way, and called it done… In and out in under 15 minutes (TWSS!… Sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Mutigrain toast topped with cottage cheese and jam; 2 fried eggs & broccoli with feta cheese.

Apparently, I also called my laptop/the floor a table, but that’s neither here nor there at this point. And now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a beautiful evening and a little pooch calling my name, so I’m gonna inhale what’s left of dinner, unplug for a bit, and go for a leisurely stroll. Lots of love until tomorrow.

. – . – . – .

Are you always hungry after you exercise?

Do you enjoy WIAW’s?

Coming from someone who does work out on an empty stomach… I honestly believe that I’d perform better if I had carbs in me beforehand. However, I need at least two hours to digest, or I get horrible cramps, and I’m sorry, I am not about to start waking up at 3.30 or 4 AM for that!

I sometimes am not hungry after I workout at night if it was an extra hard workout I sometimes lose my appetite but when I exercise in the morning I am always hungry after.

I’m loving the food combinations in this post! Hummus on top of pasta is going to happen in my life very soon. And so is cottage cheese on toast (or perhaps a gluten free waffle!).

I’m always hungry after weight workouts, but it usually takes an hour for my appetite to develop after a cardio sesh. When it develops, it comes on strong though!

    Happy Thursday!

I love WAIW’s. Some people don’t like them because they think bloggers eat too much or too little or because of the comparrison trap. But I think they are just fun! πŸ˜€
I am never hungry after a workout, I eat anyways because I know I need to though. It’s always the next day I’m ravenous. It’s weird.

I’m never hungry after I exercise! I just had that problem this morning! and I couldn’t help thinking well if I were to be following my “intuitive eating” that means I shouldn’t eat but I knew I had to refuel so I decided to just eat a bowl of oats!
I also can’t workout on an empty stomach. I have to have some kind of carbs inside of me πŸ™‚

Ahhh I’m in love with everything you ate!! I also agree on the pasta thing too – I’m not a fan and don’t keep it in the house but when I went to Italy it was TOTALLY different and quite amazing!! I’m intrigued by your egg white noodles too – never heard of them but they sound good!
Ohh and ever since I saw the cottage cheese and jam combo on bread on your blog, I am actually addicted! πŸ™‚
It’s weird because I get hungry whilst I’m exercising and I think ‘okay just another 15 minutes more body and we can get food’ but then when I finish, I TOTALLY lose my appetite! I always make sure I refuel though because I was hungry before so I obviously need it..I get more hungry when I’m just doing housework or coursework too! Thank goodness for snacks πŸ™‚

Egg white noodles? As in noodles made from egg whites? I’ve never heard of that before!

Actually I honestly have no idea why they call them egg white noodles, because they’re still made primarily from wheat… I guess it’s just the addition of the egg whites?

Your eats ALWAYS look so YUMMYYYY!! Especially your oats. My oats tend not to look as appetising…perhaps coz I am lazy these days and no longer prepare them on the stove. Time is money, people! (slash, I spend that time on facebook *guilty*).

When I used to do intense exercise I was NEVER hungry. Apparently it’s because your body releases some kind of acid into the stomach which suppresses your appetite…I’m not quite sure about that. I could have just completely made it up but it’s convincing, no? Yet, when I go for my daily walks as I do these days or do some strength training I always feel really hungry!

And yes. I rather enjoy WIAWs πŸ™‚

Not-pasta-freaks unite! I don’t particularly enjoy the stuff either :). I am going to do my first WIAW tonight! I don’t really get hungry after exercise– unless it’s the time I would normally be ready for a meal (like 3-4 hours after I ate last or something)– nor do I need to eat right after. What exercise does for me is move my digestion smoothly through and facilitate my appetite better. My blood sugar stays surprisingly constant throughout the whole day, regardless of when I exercise! I eat WAYYYY more on days AFTER extra intense exercise though.

I just found your blog the other day and love your writing style and personally! I think you are so strong and amazing for puling yourself out when you were so far in an ED. You look like you have come a great distance since then!

I’m loving WIAWs, too! I think not doing the daily eats thing anymore makes it more enjoyable than it would be otherwise. I guess showing the same (okay, similar) bowl of breakfast and some sort of sandwich for lunch just got old. Go figure.
Re: pasta – I’m the same! I’ll go without it for weeks and then all of a sudden, I NEED pasta. Those noodles look really good – I’ve actually never had the real, fresh pasta. I’m sure that would make me a pasta freak, though πŸ˜‰
And housework revving up the appetite? Uh, yes. I will be totally fine at work, then vacuum and about want to eat my own arm, too. And practically sweating. Tell me how that makes sense.
    It doesn’t.

I’m so glad you liked the video I posted. It really changed the way I think about some things. I love all your pics, especially the breakfast ones since breakfast is my favorite. TO answer the question…it really depends on the workout I do. I’m usually never hungry right after running, but give it an hour or so and I’m ready for a stack of pancakes and pb. Every time I swim I’m hungry right when I get out of the pool, no matter how far I swam.

I am rarely hungry right after a workout, which makes things difficult, especially after a long run! The other day I ran 10 miles and didn’t feel hungry so I took a bath…lo and behold by the end of it I thought I would throw up because my blood sugar was so low! I think, like you, the best option for me is to have a little something soon after, even if I don’t necessarily feel famished.

I tend to be not hungry for about 30 minutes after exercise…but if I don’t eat within that time frame, boom! My sugar level goes rock bottom – I can actually “feel” it – and I get seriously ravenous.
For me, interestingly, I seem to get hungrier the day after I work out. In addition, I tend to crave protein more on my workout days, and then more carbs on the other days. I guess that’s just me..lol!
p.s. About the WIAW, I sometimes cringe when I see few bloggers that obviously eat like….1500kcal a day…I mean, it often makes me feel like I’m eating too much or something. I love yours though!

I’ve tried a bunch of different ones, but my favorite is Organic Meadows 2%.

And you’ll get there hun. But you have to push yourself each day and resist the temptation to slide backwards. It gets a lot worse before it gets better, and you have to tough that period out.

        Thanks.
        Its hard Amanda.
Its like its been incredibly long without exercise. I literally just sleep or sit all day. It may be more because of my depression. But low weight has to count for something , right?
I will push myself I must. Its just so difficult knowing that I simply sleep or sit all day. And Amanda , I am so so low weight, that it might be so very very long before I can ever exercise again (IF I can again). I really have to stop being so whiny I know.
I WISH I could eat like you. I wish I knew the easiest, simplest, and best digestible snack and meal combinations for someone who is literally at a starting gate of it all, u know?
The organic meadows 2%: I’ll try that sometime (there is one in a tub and one that is “dry pressed”). I’ve heard good things about Nordica too.
In terms of cream cheese, I’ve seen an “Arla” brand or an organic meadows one I might try sometime soon too.
When you recovered right from the beginning, were the foods you ate still along the same lines as when you were low low weight? Like did you still eat that way that you show here or whatever, but you just increased portions and then GRADUALLY introduced new htings? Or were you eating entirely different and then suddenly switched to something else?
