EEEEeeeEEEeee! Kaiah’s gonna be just fine!
EeeeEEEeeee! 28 more days ’till I move!
EeeeeeEEEEee! It’s WIAW 😀
. – . – . – .
I woke up this morning with absolutely no appetite and no desire to eat. A rough day + a bad night = one Amanda that’s all out of whack 😯 But after sitting down at the computer with a warm cup of tea, and reading all of your amazingly supportive comments, tweets, and e-mails, I began to feel a bit better and decided it was time for breakfast…
Eggy bananafied oats topped with almond butter and chocolate pudding.
I spent the rest of the morning trying to keep myself occupied while I waited to hear from the vet about Kaiah. Now, I’m not the most patient person in the best of times, so this morning was sheer torture. Eventually, I gave up trying to keep myself occupied with menial tasks (like tidying and painting my nails), and turned to exercise as a way to try and relieve some stress.
But not before snacking first…
Rice cake topped with almond butter protein frosting and raisins
Not gonna lie; today’s workout sucked big time – so much so, that I don’t even think I can call it a workout. I did 15 minutes of intervals on the treadmill to warm up before moving on to weights, but I threw in the towel about halfway through my routine because my heart just wasn’t in it.
I would say that I was dragging my feet because I had too much on my mind, but I think I’m going through a bit of an exercise slump because a lot of my workouts have been subpar lately. I can’t even really remember the last time I broke a good sweat, and I have no idea what happened to my motivation.
Maybe it’s just a phase. Hopefully it’s just a phase 😕
In any case, lunch was a much more satisfying experience…
Greek yogurt mess with Puffins, puffed wheat, Kashi Honey Sunshine, trail mix, and extra cinnamon. Mango protein pudding.
Salad beast with simple salad dressing
Mmm Mmm Good. But the best part of all was that I finally got the news that I was waiting for…
… and you can bet your bottom (gah, how old do I sound?!?) that I broke into dance before running out the door to bring my baby home. Ky’s kind of embarrassed about the whole ordeal, and told me not to share anything too personal on the blog, but basically she has an infection in one of the scent glands around her… errr… butt, which was causing her a lot of discomfort and making her all irritated and antsy. At first they thought that they were gonna have to operate, but it turned out not to be so bad and it should clear right up with antibiotics alone.
Huge sigh of relief.
I worry about her because she’s getting kind of old. She has the energy and attitude of a 6 month old puppy, but in a few short days she’ll be 8 years old, and I start to see her real age during the still moments when she’s not running around and being a goofball…
But enough about that. It’s happy time now. And snack time too!
Deep Chocolate Vitamuffin, banana, almond butter, Greek yogurt.
Looks tasty, doesn’t it? I suppose it was, but I have to admit that I’m kinda, sorta getting tired of Vitamuffins. I used to think they were all that and a bag of potato chips, but let’s be honest here – that was back in the early days of my recovery when real desserts were scary, and my own baked “treats” were basically sugar/fat free lumps of flour and water.
What was I thinking?!? 😯
Needless to say, I won’t be buying another box after I get through the one I have, which means that I need to start looking around for a good chocolate muffin recipe (anyone know of any?). Until then, I’ll try to make the most of what I’ve got to work with…
I know. I feel sorry for me too 😉
But another snack more than made up for what the first one lacked…
Rice cake (obsessed) topped with almond butter and honey.
And dinner… err… yeah…
I hated it, obviously 😉 And now if you’ll excuse me, I have a cuddle date with a furry face and a bedtime snack to look forward to…
Oat bran mixed with applesauce; Greek yogurt, flaxmeal, cinnamon, and maple syrup.
. – . – . – .
Do you ever experience exercise slumps? How do you get out of them?
Have you ever been really impressed by a certain food/recipe, only to find that it no longer appealed to you after a while, and you find yourself wondering what you saw in it in the first place?
haveasliceofkatypie
YAAAAAAAAaaaAAAaAAaAAaaaaaAAAYYYY!!! SOOOOOO pleased that your sweet (not so) little doggy is going to be all right!
Oh yes, in the early days of refeeding I would try new things like “real” cookies and spread low fat spread onto a piece of raisin toast and think that I was in heaven. Now, it’s just normal to my taste buds. I also made many a batch of applesauce brownies (the low-fat, low-sugar kind of brownie O_o) and they were simply amazing. Now that I’ve been making “real” brownies, I can’t handle the applesauce kind. They’re so not as good as I remember them to be.

The news about Kaiah made me so happy 😀 She is so cute, and Im she is back home with you!!
I havent had Vitamuffins before. But I do remember back when I used to be all about calorie counting, and I “fryed” my veggies in water and ate fat-free anything. I really did like it. I think.. Then i started the whole Atkins/high fat thing, and while I still was disordered and I hate Atkins, at least that diet made me enjoy my fats again. And I havent gone back on that. Now I love fats, and I never choose anything fat-free. The greek yoghurt I ate yesterday, was with 10 % fat 😀 Loved how creamy and yummy it tasted!
Great eats 😀 Everything makes my tymmy hungry and my head happy 🙂 Happy WIAW baby:**
Kaila @healthyhelperblog!
YAY! So happy the pupsters okayy! I hate hearing about sick animals! I love them just as much as people!
Maria @ Beautiful Busy Bee
I get out of exercise slumps by trying something new!!! I got a lil bit sick of running after track season so I bumped up my cycling and started swimming laps. 🙂 I thought plain cottage cheese was amazing for a while, but now… no. I still like it on salads though!
In Sweetness and In Health
Yay, I’m so glad your dog is okay!! That had to have been a huge relief :). I do get in exercise slumps sometimes. When that happens I usually take it as a sign to take a couple days off and get rejuvenated. I definitely go through phases with food where I’ll be really obsessed with something and then down the line I’ll be sick of it. A few years ago I was really into the whole “low-calorie” is healthy thing and I ate of bunch of foods that were labeled low calorie. I thought they were great at the time, but now I understand that they aren’t usually good for you at all and I prefer to eat the real stuff!
Albizia
A big hug to Kaiah from me! And do you know what? She is still pretty young. I got my little prince when I was 7th grade and I am not even completely sure how old he is now but he is still running around the flat and barking like crazy. I want him to live at least 20 years 🙂 .
Vitamuffins have always looked so appealing to me. Maybe because I have never had the chance to try them. Who knows? But I suppose everything gets old if you eat it for too long and at the end it is time for a change. I wish I could offer you a recipe from my collection of tasty treasures bookmarked through the years but… I have been without internet at home since I moved more than 3 weeks ago (crazy Japanese system!) and right now I can’t 🙁
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
They look appealing for sure, but they taste… different. Not bad, but you can tell they’re pretty much a diet food.
sarah k b
You’re right about the taste. They look and smelll like chocolate cake, but the taste is, I don’t know, vitaminy? I still eat them as a snack but they are mixed in with flavoured greek yogurt to mask the after taste!
Kate @ Chasing It
YAYYY so glad the puppy is gonna be ok!! 🙂
sometimes I get in workout slumps and its usually for one of two reasons: 1) I need to rest 2) I need to do a different workout! maybe either take a rest day or instead of your normal routine, take a spin or yoga class, go for a bike ride, go for a lil run outside….shake it up!
katshealthcorner
I’m glad that Kaila is going to be fine! What a relief! 🙂 Your oatmeal is making me so hungry right now and it’s like 9:30 at night!
Jenn L @ Peas and Crayons
ahhhh 28 will go so fast! and i’m so glad your gorgeous pupper is okay! <3 phew! crisis adverted eh? Speaking of crisis, i need to go check on roxy =/ I haven't seen her all. day. and usually she sits at my feet and begs for flax seed oil. eep! tty soon love!!!!!!!
spectacuLAUR
I realize now that while I was running, it was actually an exercise slump. I’ve learned there are multiple ways to workout besides cardio (strictly running)… including pilates, cycling, lifting, swimming. I look back now and even though I was in “running” shape… Was I really in shape?
I tend to go through random food phases a lot… I always think things are REALLY good but then I branch out and find there is more to the world. My last one was probably dried mango slices. I mean, I still love ’em but there’s more to eat out there.
Maxwell@FreedomRunning
Yay! Yay! Yay! Yay! EEeeeeeEEEeee! Eeee!!! Ky is okay!!!!! I am so relieved and happy! I actually was thinking about her when I was praying last night. At first I was like ” really, pray for a dog?” but then I thought ” eh, dogs are God’s creation too! Why not pray for Ky?” so I did. You think it helped? 🙂
I feel you on the Vitamuffins. Everyone one made them out to be like the cat’s pajamas, but when I bought a few and tried them…I was less than impressed. I like to stick to my Chocolaty PB oats. 🙂
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Awwwr girl that’s so sweet. Thank you. I definitely think it helped 😀
Ma Ma Megan
I have been thinking of you and your Kiah all day! Glad your baby is okay!!
My puppy is almost 8 too but he doesn’t act like it all! He has little grey hairs around his face , but I refuse to believe he’s old because he’s got the spirit and energy of a puppy. 🙂
I’ve never even had a rice cake before, but methinks I should try one though. You pimp them out so well I want to give it a shot!
I myself am in an exercise slump too. I guess I need to come up with new routines or something.
Gina
So glad to hear about Kaiah!!
I love rice cakes topped with anything delicious! Such a great snack! I especially love the flavored rice cakes 🙂
Jess@HealthyExposures
YESSSSS!!!! I am SO glad to read that Kaiah’s going to be just fine!! Is she able to come with you when you move, or is she staying with your parents?
And don’t worry about your workout slump 😉 take some time off and see how you feel! i wouldn’t say i was starting to dislike running, but when I took a bit of a “forced week off,” i was SO excited when I could get back into it, and really looking forward to it 🙂 or maybe you just need to switch it up a bit?
I used to love Vita Muffins, too 😉 Now I don’t buy stuff like that, and just make it myself when I catch some time. I don’t have anything against it, I just never realized how over-priced they are :X
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
No, Ky has to stay home with my parents 🙁 New place doesn’t allow pets. But I’ll still probably be seeing her every day anyways. And some time off sounds like a good thing. I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ll end up doing.
Yaara
Hey Amanda!
I first want to tell you how much I appreciate your blog. You are so honest and sincere and say things that are real. You don’t sugar coat which I love!! I am so happy that Kaia is going to be ok. I totally know what it’s like to feel a lack of motivation. I have severe issues with indecision and that mixed with my lack of motivation was just insane. This morning was a prime example–I went from–I think I’ll do intervals on the treadmill…no wait I’ll do a workout dvd.. oh no wait I’d rather do a yoga class. Then finally it was around noon, i felt hungry and I was like..screw this I’m having lunch. Then I just felt guilty and self loathing the rest of the day.
These things happen. I think it’s best to not be to hard on yourself and just remember tomorrow is a new day. Try adding some new poppy songs to your ipod–that always motivates me. I hope you get out of your slump!!
Yaara
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Thank you, Yaara. For your kind words and your advice 🙂
Danielle Spellman @Squirrel Snackin'
So glad your doggy is okay! And your WIAW eats are rockin! Every post I’ve read with all your eats of the day always look sooo good. 🙂
Sarina
Yay Kaiah! I really believe that with a loooot of love, dogs can live for a very long time. My previous dog was pushing on his 18th birthday before he passed away. Don’t worry, they can hold on for quite a while 🙂
Exercise slumps motivate me to find something new to discover… one led me to join up for body combat classes at the gym and then I was having a great time, and then when that phase fizzled out I discovered Zumba, which is still going strong. Sometimes it leads around in a good cycle, where you are dying to return back to a workout you used to do… almost like your muscles are just asking for a bit of variety!
Different flavoured yogurts are usually what I originally love – ‘omg, where have you been all my life!’ – only to realise a few tubs (and slight addiction) later that I’m actually wanting just plain natural again. Happens every time 🙂
buttonss - Cherie
Excellent news about your little pup!! Poor little thing 🙁
Perhaps you were a little stressed so your stomach wasn’t really wanting any food. Thats what happens to me, I loose all hunger when I’m stressed and have to make myself eat even though I’m not hungry.
I’m definitely thinking your just in a slump with the exercise. In a week or two you will probably be working your little butt off at the gym and loving it!!
Jen
I think everyone goes through exercise slumps! Mine always roll around when I’ve been doing the same routine for too long. If I’m bored, I’m forcing myself to do it, and if I’m forcing myself to do it, then I’m most definitely resenting it. I don’t ever want to resent something I love, so whenever this happens, I change it up a bit! Or take some time off. Don’t expect every workout to be amazing, because that’s like asking a pig to fly. Motivation comes and goes. Switch it up for a little while, and the enjoyment will return! Sometimes I take exercise slumps as a sign that my body is asking for a break. Whenever I take a little bit of time off, I’m super eager to get in a hardcore workout again!
On another note, I’m so glad that Kaiah (and her butt) is okay! And your rice cakes = snack porn.
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
You’re probably right. I think I’ll take some time off and wait until I’m really, REALLY craving it to start up again.
sarah
Ah, I’m so glad the pupster is going to be fine, whew!
I think everyones exercise motivation ebbs and flows. A new class, activity or routine normally busts me out of a slump. Reading my favourite fitness magazines, books and about inspirational figures in the fitness world normally re awakens my passion for working out. If you have been working particularly hard or are experiencing burn out I think a complete break from formal exercise can help. I like to use this time to try out other hobbies. Say ,like experimenting to find THE PERFECT chocolate muffin recipe, and sharing it with ME;)
Friggin foodgasmic eats- not that I expected anything less from you<3
Xxx
Aimee
So thrilled to hear that Kaiah is going to be fine! What a relief! By the way will she be moving with you next month?
Im sure that everyone gets in exercise ruts after a while – maybe its because you have has so much on your mind with the move and Kaiah – im sure its only temporary!
Love all of your yummy meals from today – rice cakes wopped with nut butter and raisins-perfect snack!
Have a great Thursday!
🙂
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
She won’t be able to come with me, no 🙁 The place I bought doesn’t allow pets, but I’ll still probably be coming to see her everyday, and taking her for walks in the river valley.
Alexandra
I’m so flipping happy Kaiah is gonna be a-okay! What a sigh of relief 😀
All of your noms are oober tasty lookin, especially that glorious greek yogurt mess you had for lunch, holy wow! 😛
I’ll be keepin my fingers crossed you can get out of your exercise funk, it can be so frustrating hitting plateaus like that. I’m sure you’ll bust through the sub-par workouts in no time and come out even stronger! Sometimes I like to change up my workout with something new, like yoga or bike riding for a day instead of the same ol’ same ol’, it always seems to get me back on track! Best of luck and happy WIAW! 🙂
Tessa @ Amazing Asset
So happy to hear your puppy is okay! Sweet relief!
You made me chuckle with your idea of dessert when you were recovering- lumps of flour and water… I feel ya on that one, same for me in the worst times!
All of your eats always look so so good, I am ever impressed 🙂
I’m sure you will get out of the phase soon… I have definitely experienced them too. Perhaps try something different for a few days and see how that makes you feel? Like a class maybe or at-home style stuff. I find that changing my routine gets me a bit more pumped
missymiller
So SO happy Ky is okay.
Phew.
Exercise slumps happen — let’s be glad we are not exercise slaves and that a minor phase won’t turn us psycho like in days of disorderly conduct, amen?
We throw in the towel, wonder what is up and eat good food.
I must ask…since you’ve been such a pimp..have you ever tried these thin rice cakes? You should (if you want). They rock. They don’t replace the thick kind they are just different.

Tori (Fresh Fruition)
Whee! I’m so happy she’s alright. I totally lol’d at the ‘butt’ thing. I would be embarassed, too. But the most important thing is that she’s alright, eh? 😉
I do love vitatops, but simply because I’ve yet to find a good chocolate muffin recipe! I’ve never really had much of the other flavors because I know I can make my own of something similar that’s just as good! Nomnomnom. Let me know if you find something promising!
I tend to get exercise boredom. I’ll get super into something and do it a few times, but before long I’m wanting to do something else. Eeep.
I go through food phases, so I tend to look back on things and think ‘hmm, how did I ever eat that so much?’. Hah.
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Hopefully it doesn’t happen with eggy bananafied oats 😉
Tori (Fresh Fruition)
NEVER! Oats never seem to tire… you can always switch up the toppings if you get bored, eh? 🙂
Alexis
I love your foods!! Come cook for me please!! I’m so glad your puppy dog is all okay that puts a huge smile on my face!
I’m in an exercise slump now. Running isn’t fun anymore because of my plantar fasciitis grr
Ha yes! I have been fascinated with certain healthy recipes only recently to try them again and dislike them. The mind tricks 😉
Meg
Yay for [soon to be] healthy puppies! * Happy dance ! *
I just had the worst running slump ever. I stepped back, did some casual walking/random weight lifting, before I found the desire again. Sometimes I just need to cut back to almost nothing to truly MISS working out and how good it makes me feel.
I used to be absolutely OBSESSED with granola/granola bars. So much so that I can’t eat them now…I can do a little sprinkle but I totally ate granola SO much that it lost its deliciousness. Same with special k…I used to eat it for like 2 meals a day. So ridiculous. I get into seriousss food slumps!
Have a great night!!!
Laura
So glad Kaiah is alright! Gosh, I love that name. If I’m even saying it right, in my head{Kai- ya} ? I might name my child that if you don’t mind. Not that im becoming pregnant anytime soon.
For the workout situation, maybe try something totally new! Like power yoga, or zumba.
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Yup, you’re saying it right 😀
Jessica
That’s great news. I’m glad Kaiah’s going to be fine! It’s so horrid when one of your furry-family members is not 110%.
My whole life is an exercise slump. Just kidding. Well … sorta. 😉 If I don’t want to exercise, I don’t. If I get bored, I try and find something else. It might be just a brisk walk or it might be packing myself off to the swimming pool … I think change helps.
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes
I hate slumps!! happy WIAW though! your eats are great as usual. Loving the pimped out rice cake 🙂
2tightlywound
So happy to hear that Kaiah is okay (albeit a little embarrassed about her condition ;)).
And I think I might have stolen your workout mojo; I’ve had great workouts all week. When I’m in a funk I try to switch things up, or take a few days to rest.
Cait @ beyond bananas
Thrilled everything is okay with Ky! I know how miserable waiting can be. My dog once got into a room where be doesn’t usually go and ate a bottle of naproxen. Bad news bears. He was rushed to a vet hospfial and spent almost 2 weeks there as they medicated him and tried to promote the recovery of his kidney (he had lost almost 70% of it at one point) it was pure torture having to go and see him looking so I’ll and sad, thankfully he had made a full recovery and is ip to no good as usual!
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Omigosh that’s horrible! I’m so glad that he made it out okay!
Sarah
i’m so happy kaiah is going to be fine! i know how scary it can be when your fur-baby isn’t feeling well.
when i get in an exercise slump i either take a day or two off and come back with a vengeance or i try something new – a new class, running route, or dvd!
Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner)
SO HAPPY ABOUT KAIAH!! When I saw your tweet I squealed with happiness!! 😀
I’ve had exercise slumps, but trying a new thingy helps! Or taking some time off, so you’re ITCHING to get back and sweat it out!! Mmmm now I’m craving a chocolate muffin…at 1am… 😛
Samantha
The past little while I’ve been going through a bit of a workout slump… but I think in time’s like this, the reason it happens is because of redundancy. Switching it up helps a lot… it’s a little harder since I don’t have a gym membership so I’m stuck resorting to the equipment I have at home, but also switching up my music on my iPod motivates me. Speaking of which this post has motivated me to get my buns on my bike “to workout or not to workout that is the question” is what’s been ringing in my head for the past half hour “I don’t regret working out while I’m doing it, but I regret not doing it”… something a long those lines.
Keep your chin up girly you’ll get through it!
So happy your gorgeous pup is okay!!!

Kaiah. I had a guinea pig named Kaia but pronounced the same way (I think?). Loved my guinea.
I’m so glad your puppy girl is okay. 🙂
And to answer your questions… I’m always in an exercise slump. I hate exercise. So if you find the secret, lemme know.
And… hmmmm… I think I still love all the foods I ever loved… I just find new stuff to love and then I forget about the old stuff and then I rediscover the old stuff and I’m like “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!” Yeah… That’s my story.
Sarah - feeedingbrainandbody
EEEEeeeEEEeee! I’m so glad Kaiah is okay! Don’t worry my first dog lived well into his teens, and he was an unhealthy dog (massively overweight). I’m sure your have lots of more secrets and memories with Kaiah!

So glad that your dog is gonna be okay! It’s true that a dog really is a person’s best friend.

Good to hear Kaiah is fine, you must be super relieved 🙂
I go through a lot of exercise slumps, usually it means I’m either exhausted or bored with whatever I’m doing…I usually go make a few new playlists/download new songs and do something outdoorsy instead.
cleaneatingchelsey
Yay! So glad your puppy is okay! I’ve had the exercise slumbs before too – I just tend to take a few days off or switch up my workouts!
