Happy day! Lookit, lookit! Lookit who’s back!
You were expecting someone else? π
Squeeee!Β And not only that, but he brought friends!
Mmmmm. Yep, I’d have to say that all is good in the world again, so let’s jump right into what everyone looks forward to every Wednesday (or every day?) – the food!
We’re back to focusing on healthy habits this month, but I’ve always been one to march to the beat of my own drum,Β so instead of talking about healthy habits (as I sit here eating pizza and coffee… oops), I’m going to talk aboutΒ quirky habits. I’m pretty particular when it comes to how I eat and I thought it would be fun to share some of my quirks with you. Let’s start with breakfast…
Plain Greek yogurt – banana – applesauce – Kashi Cinnamon Harvest Β – roasted almond butter
I probably eat 99.28% of my breakfasts from that one bowl. Why? Because wanting to see the cute picture that’s at the bottom of the bowl makes me more likely to finish every bite…
Okay, so that’s not even close to being true. The real reason is because it’s the perfect shape. Not too big. Not too deep. Nice and open. It just works.Β Goldilocks had her porridge, chairs, and beds, I have my bowl. Oh, and spoon…
I like them small (said no girl, ever… sorry… I couldn’t resist). It’s not that I can’t use other bowls and spoons, or that I go out of my way to make sure that I have these specific ones on hand, but they’re the ones that I reach for, all other things being equal. And while we’re on the topic of spoons, that’s what I like to use when it comes to smoothies…
1 cup milk,Β ΒΌ Greek yogurt, 1 frozen banana, 1 Tbsp. AB, Β½ Tbsp. chia seeds
No straws for this girl. If a smoothie isn’t thick enough to eat with a spoon then… then what? Then I throw more things in the cauldron blender until it is. Straws are good for water, though….
For whatever reason, I have a way easier time drinking water through a straw than straight from the glass. Whatever works, right? I also have a way easier time eating lunch…
… when I tear it into pieces rather than biting straight into it….
Okay, easier might be the wrong word… I just like it better that way. I also like eating the veggies first and saving the better part for last. Oh, and I don’t really like putting a lot of effort into dinner…
… although that’s probably something I should look into changing – my cappuccino and pizza consumption is getting a bit out of hand, as is my breakfast-type-food consumption…
Which reminds me… I really need to go out and buy some more yogurt. I’m currently down to 2 tubs and heaven forbid that another blizzard hits, because then I’d really be screwed – I might have to start eating normal people food, and that would be really unfortunate π― Happy Wednesday, friends!
. – . – . – .
What’s something good that happened today?
Do you have any quirky eating habits?
Tell me to stop being lazy and put more effort into dinner!Β
Molly@This Life Is Sparkling
I love that bowl π And I’m the same way with spoons and any utensil for that matter, I like them small π
Miss Polkadot
Aww, that bowl’s too cute! I’m particularly fond of this one and am always eating my oat bran from it: http://mollegaarden.dk/de/greengate-geschirr-schuessel-aus-porzellan-8-cm-spot-red.html
However, seeing as it’s a super small one that’s one of my quirkiest habiest: My oar bran – as well as all other hot dishes – needs to be really warm when I’m eating it so I’m leaving it in the pot and am enjoying it in mini servings. While I really want my food to be warm I think quirky habits can be hard to distinguish from eating disordered ones. Hope this doesn’t sound weird or offensive but how can you tell whether a certain quirky habit is just that or still something stuck from ED days? I’m meaning this more to find ways to tell for myself than to accuse you of having EdD habits, really!
My best part of yesterday was spending lots of time with the boy :).
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That’s definitely a super cute bowl, and yay for boy time! π As for figuring out if something is ED related… try not doing it and seeing how you feel as a result. If it causes you anxiety, then it still might be some lingering disordered thoughts, but if you just genuinely don’t enjoy it or it feels weird, then it’s probably no big deal.
Irina @ Chocolatea Time
Oh my gosh I LOVE that bowl!! I’m such a crazy cat lady and that bowl would fit in perfectly with my collection. My one main quirk with utensils and dishes is that I love miniature things – spoons, forks, pans (mini pans make my heart melt with joy) – it’s insane. I also always drink my tea out of one particular tea mug and my coffee out of my specific coffee mug. It makes me so happy π
Lisa
We share a lot of the same quirks:) I like knowing other peoples eating habits ha ha. I guess because I’m nosy. I also eat with a tiny spoon. Once I saw my sister eating with it when she came over and I flipped. Then I realized I was a little too much of a drama queen when it comes to that spoon. Yikes. I also only like drinking coffee out of paper cups (like starbucks cups), so each time I go and get coffee there I always ask for 3 extra cups, that way when I make my own at home (rarely) I have cups to put it in. I’m odd ha ha. I totally do that with my bread as well!
Liz (formerly VeggieGirl)
I’m the same way with straws/glasses – I NEED a straw unless it’s a water bottle, haha. I’m also the same way with breaking off small pieces instead of just biting into a food.
Allison @ Life's a Bowl
Welp, I literally laughed the whole way through this post π And you wanna know why, cause many of your quirks are my quirks too- fabulous at its finest! I usually use the same bowls/ plates, small spoons all day every day, and tearing my food!
Kat
I love me some baby spoons. And eating a smoothie with a spoon makes me feel like I’m eating a milkshake, which is always a good thing π I actually also adore soup spoons. I think I like the funny shape they have π
Rebecca @ Blueberry Smiles
Your bowl is adorable! I would eat all my meals out of that too π
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction
I sometimes eat with my left hand to slow myself down. Sometimes if I am ravenous I will gobble down my food all in one bite (bad habit). Eating with my left hand slows me down, but also frustrates me too haha.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I can imagine! I think if I tried to eat with my left hand, I’d end up with more food on the table than I would in my mouth.
Brittany
THAT bowl!! I need that bowl!! Bahaha seriously, that is awesome. I love your quirky habits, that’s what makes you who you arreeee! I think if you like your dinner, then eat it!! Who cares if there’s minimal effort, it’s still better than Macdonald’s!
Kimberly
Oh, pizza and coffee isn’t that bad. π Happy WIAW!
Let’s see quirky eating habits: I also have a favorite bowl and I love eating my fruit with small forks. Don’t know why, but it feels more dessert-like.
Thanks for sharing your fun eats!
Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear
I do the exact same thing with spoons and bowls! I have like one set that’s just perfect. I also really just like small spoons, idk why, but I totally agree with you there.
Natasha
The only quirky habits I can think of is that I am extremely picky and I will eat the same things over and over again.
I must eat breakfast within 10 minutes of waking up, and I always always always have pumpkin oatmeal for breakfast.
I don’t think those are that weird though…maybe they are hahah
Sarah @ Feeeding the Brain and Body
I also tear into my foods rather than biting directly into them. I tend to use my hands a lot more than I do cutlery haha. I also don’t like big spoons π That smoothie sounds delicious! π
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin
Haha I have favourite bowls that I prefer to use too! I can’t think of too many other quirky eating habits of mine… except that I love eating frozen corn right out of the freezer! Whenever I’m cooking with corn, I always sneak a few handfuls of it while it’s still frozen. π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hehe I definitely do that too with the corn. Heck, I’ve even done it with frozen peas and carrots too. I think there’s something about frozen foods that encourages random picking…
lindsay
bahahahha, you sound like me. I have a snoopy spoon i use. its the perfect size! and bowl! and i must spoon smoothies. More fun. I tear into my lunches and barely use utensils. I have a feeling i will not be a good role model if we have kids. uh oh
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance
I carry around a Tervis Tumbler with a straw sticking out of it everywhere I go, knowing that I’ll drink MUCH more water when there’s a straw glaring at me in the face haha. What’s funny is that my mother refuses to drink out of straws (and tells me to be careful) because she claims I’m going to get premature wrinkles π
Totally worth it? π
Jun
Oh yes… I don’t know if it’s psychological or something… I eat very little in public compared to the amount of food I eat at home. Need to overcome my fear of eating out for sure! Also I think I may be addicted to bread. My desire to sink my teeth into the doughy bread far exceeds my craving for ice-cream and chocolates to a point that worries me.
I’m not trying to sabotage or anything… but if eating breakfast sort of food for dinner suits your palate and is what you enjoy, I say there’s no reason to change. If your body happens to scream for greens and more balanced meals… somehow you’ll detect a signal. So I say just roll with what suits you!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
!!! You’re a horrible enabler! π But you’re probably right. Oh, and you’re definitely not the only one who craves doughy bread like crazy. Sometimes I’ll eat a slice or two of plain toasted bread just to satisfy that kind of craving.
Lucie
Aaaah. love that post! I ALWAYS drink my tea and water out of a Starbucks mug with a straw. It tastes better, right?? π And I am the same when it comes to wraps or sandwiches . I always tear the whole thing up and eat it in pieces…I eat the greens out of the salad and save the proteins for last…I eat only with small spoons….OH, and I eat the inside of a breadroll first and then the crust. Oh well. Cook a fab dinner, will you!! π
Floey
Omg please tell me where you got that cat bowl!!! ADORABLE! haha
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I actually don’t remember! It was too many years ago.
Albizia
I always leave the best for the end too. Which is usually a meatball or something with a lot of cheese. Or cake frosting. Don’t ask me how I manage to eat the whole slice of cake without touching the ganache π Same bowl – check. Same spoon – check. Once I find the right utensil I completely ignore the rest. And I put all fruits in the fridge. I have a lot of quirky habits. Too many to track them all.
Something good today – Twitter and candied citrons. Too long to explain but it was hilarious and made my day.
Stop being lazy. Buy something different for dinner π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I always manage to eat the cake and save the frosting for last, too π It’s a skill to be proud of.
Sara @ Nourish and Flourish
My head was nodding the entire way through this post; we sure do share quite a few quirky eating habits! I *always* use a small spoon, and actually have a pretty extensive collection of them. When I’m forced to eat with a regular-sized spoon, it just doesn’t feel right. In regards to smoothies: they must be thick, otherwise it’s a no go. The same actually holds true for soup; if it’s too “brothy” I pass. And sandwiches/pizza/bread-type foods are always always torn. I rarely ever take a bite “into” something. Oh, and bowls? I live in a house with five other people, and I now keep my two favorites separate from everyone else’s because, well, I used to cry inside whenever I’d go to use one and find that it was dirty or already in use.
Gosh, in re-reading this, I sound pretty high maintenance! :-p I promise that I’m not! π In fact, I’ve become so lazy in regards to food, it’s almost embarrassing. I plan to make up for it next week while I’m at home though; it’s Thanksgiving, which means I’ll be doing lots of cooking. π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve become super lazy when it comes to food too! Hence the frozen pizzas happening almost every night… but my creativity probably won’t kick in again until Christmas because our Thanksgiving already happened last month π
Ashley @ AlmostVegGirlie
Sometimes I eat things that are supposed to be eaten with a spoon with a fork instead because then it lasts longer. Obviously that doesn’t work so well with soup… π And when I eat homemade trail mix, I always eat everything in a certain order, saving the chocolate chips or dried fruit for last! And there are certain fruits I love, but only when they’re frozen, like grapes. I still can eat grapes straight from the fridge, but they’re not quite as good as the frozen ones. So weird!
Gina @ Health, Love, and Chocolate
Yay the return of the almond butter! I have a lot of quirky foods habits, probably too many to list, but one is that I always save the toppings of my food for last (eat the yogurt in my yogurt bowls/ lettuce of my salads/milk in my cereal first). Haha, I’m a special one. π
Khushboo
Haha I loved reading your quirky habits, Amanda….especially as we seem to share so many! Along with eating with a small spoon, I rarely bite into a sandwich! I always split it open and eat it open-faced! Other quirky habits of mine include:
-I prefer chocolate straight out the freezer
-Whenever I’m eating marinara sauce, I always top it with a butt load of tabasco
-I eat pizza with a fork & knife
-If I’m adding milk to my tea/coffee, it always goes in the cup before the water
Boy I’m quirky ;)!
Jenn
This is fun! Question though; please don’t get mad!! I just wondered if some of these things could be ED related? For example, they always told me tearing my food apart like you do was an eating disorder behavior. Thoughts? Its not something that needs changing I don’t think! But just want to know what you think.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Mmm… I don’t really think so – they’re just preferences. I remember a lot of the strange habits I engaged in when I was really in the depths of my ED, and the mentality behind the ones I have now is completely different. I definitely do see where you’re coming from though!
Devon
I am OBSESSED with tiny spoons! I also have this weird quirk where if I’m eating crunchy snacks, I chew the same amount on each side of my mouth. 3 cheerios with the left molars, gotta chew 3 with the right. It’s bizarre, I know. I’ve mostly stopped telling people this because I get very strange looks.
Chelsie @ Balance, Not Scale
Girl — ohman. bahaha! Said no girl, ever = epic. Totally made my night. <3 Love it!!!
Other than drinking water with a straw (I'm a Nalgene lover, the bigger the gulps, the better π ), we have THE EXACT same habits. Every single solitary one. And that warms my heart. I've always thought I was strange for my (healthy and not ED) food habits — but it's the small things that help me enjoy food more.
I'm reminded of the chant the women sing in the movie "About a Boy" (single parents alone together!) — except we're Quirky Foodies Alone Together. Whatd'ya say? π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’d love to be a ‘Quirky Foodie Alone Together’ with you, especially if I don’t have to worry about you stealing my straws (which I have to ninja from Starbucks) π
Alexandra
I am in LOVE with that kitty bowl!!! He’s so cute! π
And I totally agree with ya on small spoons, it makes oober tasty meals last longer heehee
Hmm weird habit….I always ALWAYS have to have a spoonful (or five) of pb before I go to sleep. It knocks me out like a baby every time!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Pft! Girl, that’s completely normal π
shannon
OMG i have the weirdest food things too. AKA certain bowls, peeling bagels and pancakes, using favorite silverware. I was just thinking the other day how excited I am to go home for break and use this one fork my parents have π
Exciting thing! I am getting involved in undergraduate research which will not only give me awesome experiences, but force me to break from a routine that is comfortable and roll with the punches!
Caitlin
I love small spoons, too, and I always eat from the same large pasta bowl. Everything fits in it, it’s not huge, and it’s a simple dish to wash over and over. Priorities π I always eat my vegetables first for the same reason, I like to try and put marinara sauce on everything, and I need a mug of tea to go with every meal and snack…even in the summer.
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
Hahaha said no girl ever.. true, but I do like the small silverware! I’m not sure why, but it’s so much better to eat with them. I have certain plates and bowls, too. It’s normal to me ;D
Alex @ therunwithin
I am all about quirks, I love them! I think you should embrace them. Oh I have the same bowl I use for every dinner, no matter what I eat. i also need things at like extreme temperatures, coffee has to be so hot to drink it not luke hot. i have many more, I will save you the novel.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I burned the roof of my mouth drinking really hot coffee once and learned my lesson. I can only drink it luke warm now…
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
I wasn’t sure about almond butter the first time that I tried it….but I am beyond convinced of its greatness now. I guess my taste buds smartened up! π
Now quit being lazy and go make a fabulous dinner! π haha jk…we all need lazy days sometimes!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha! Sometimes – I agree. The problem is that its become a lot more often than not lately!
lisa fine
I was never really a straw person, until I bought a glass straw online from a company called Glass Dharma. I love it! It makes the water taste nice and clean, and I find myself drinking more water when I use it.
I also only like to drink seltzer at lunchtime or later. For some reason, it really grosses me out to drink seltzer in the morning.
Danielle @ Clean Food Creative Fitness
I always thought I was so strange cause I drink water better from a straw or from a sport bottle vs. a regular bottle! Glad to know i’m not alone!
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate
I have a bunch of quirky habits! Breakfast has to be WARM. Even in the summer!
Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin
I love you. This post cracked me up hehe and it’s good to know someone else has quirky eating habits. I have so many weird ways I eat – one thing is when I eat pizza, I like to eat all the toppings with a fork and then eat the crust. I don’t do this in public, only when eating at home or with close friends. I also like to eat all of the lettuce out of a salad first before eating whatever else is in it (kind of like saving the good parts for last). Yay for weirdness
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hehe I usually pick apart my pizzas too, unless I’m really hungry, in which case I just shove the whole thing into my mouth and call it good.
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey
I like small spoons too! More bites to take!
Jess
I hate using big spoons! I always use the smallest one I can find. And I have a favourite bowl too.
