Oh for crying out loud…
I’ve been sitting here for something like fifteen minutes twiddling my thumbs while trying to come up with a clever way to start today’s post, and my efforts have been in vain – I’ve got nothing. Nada. Zip. I think my brain is still feeling a little bit fried after yesterday’s commenting etiquette post, which I really loved reading your guys’ comments on, by the way. It’s a delicate issue that doesn’t really seem to have a clear cut answer. Definitely some food for thought.
But today, we’re going to switch gears and talk about food for the body – it is WIAW after all…
I tried to come up with a theme for this week’s WIAW, but quickly realized that my eats over the past little while have had no real rhyme or reason. Aside from starting and ending the day with cereal…
Breakfast: plain Greek yogurt, banana, blueberries, cinnamon Puffins, Kashi Honey Sunshine, roasted almond butter.
Bedtime snack: Raisin Bran with a banana and milk.
… and enjoying my daily cappuccinos…
… things have been pretty random around these parts. Take this salad, for example…
A snack. Who the heck am I!? I can’t even remember the last time I craved veggies for a snack, but I found myself wanting chicken and hot sauce one afternoon and hey… who am I to question a craving. Actually, I take that back – I have been questioning my cravings. You guys know I have a huge sweet tooth, right? Well, lately I’ve been passing up the saccharine seducers and gravitating more towards… salt…
Sour Cream and Onion Popchips.
Salsa, straight from the jar.
Hummus and anything I can stick in it (ie: chips, veggies, spoon, finger…)
Yeah, don’t ask me – I can’t explain it either. You needn’t be too concerned just yet, though; the sweet tooth has still been kicking in from time to time…
Zensoy Chocolate Vanilla pudding.
Oat bran made with coconut milk, then mixed with yogurt and topped with chocolate.
Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Muffins. I needed a break from cookies and went the muffin route instead.
And I guess I should probably mention that I’ve been eating actual meals as well, and not just snacking all day.
Lunch: English muffin topped with avocado and jam, carrot sticks, salad.
Dinner: pumpkin chili Mexican scramble with Annie’s cheddar bunnies.
So there we have it: the food that’s been keeping me going as of late. And speaking of going, it’s time for me to run (figuratively speaking). Between work and volunteering, today is going to be a long day indeed.
Have a good one, friends!
. – . – . – .
What was the last craving you satisfied?
Have you experienced any “what the heck?!” cravings lately?
Snacks: sweet or salty?
[email protected].
I am a salty snack person for sure!
Jill
Your eats always make me simultaneously smile and cry.
Your lunch: I want it…looks so simple, and good on the tummy…but i’m not “allowed” because its not enough protein and gluten…
🙁
Your bedtime snack: again so simple and wonderful…but i’m not “allowed” because its too small and not enough protein ( so instead i eat 200 grams of yogurt with 4 tbsps of nut butter and 2 giant oranges at 11 pm )
🙁
Your popchips? I bought them for my mom…she ate them in a flash…i stared at them
🙁
Terra chips in the cupboard…but i’m not “allowed” cause i just binged on 500 calories of yogurt, fruit, and pumpkin seed butter….and i don’t ever (ever ) exercise
🙁
so
up a creek without a paddle
worse is that i have serious cramping, energy and digestive, and ahem, bowel, issues…and need to elminate eggs and dairy for a long while….pretty sure i’m going to be uber lost without them…seriously….lots to figure out. not fun.
keep snacking up girl. and add a half jar of nut butter to your beddtime snack 🙂 make me sane.
Karey @ Nutty About Health
Your eats look delicious! I love how you cooked your oat bran… never thought of doing it like that w/the coconut milk & yogurt mixed in… good idea! I also think your muffins look amazing!!
i usually crave sweet snacks… been enjoying overnight oats a lot lately & fruit. Always loving the nut butters too.
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables
Is it weird that I never crave sweet??? I crave almond milk and sunflower butter all.the.time! My appetite has been crazy this week!
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast
Oh man, wrong post to read while I’m cooking dinner… this just made me so hungry! I’ve been craving saltier snacks lately too, although I also have a huge sweet tooth. That pumpkin chili scramble looks fantastic!
Liv @ Life As Liv
I’ve been having a crunch craving lately! It’s strange, but softer, smoother foods don’t sound as good as crispy, munchy food.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I go through texture phases like that as well! Or I’ll start craving things that are really dry and wheaty.
Laura Agar Wilson (@lauraagarwilson)
Last night I came in from a three hour train journey and was craving fats like crazy, luckily I had some tinned coconut milk in the fridge and even some heavy cream! They tasted amazing, and even better I had zero guilty because I knew my body just needed it 🙂
Sonia the Mexigarian
Chocolate. Chocolate. and Chocolate. But sometimes I get hit with the salty craving so bad I raid the chips. thankfully tortilla chips with salsa, and that hits the spot. 🙂 Printing out recipe for the chocolate chip muffins now.
Devon @ Health in Equilibrium
Your toppers are brilliant! Cheddar bunnies on eggs, real chocolate on oat bran! *Swoon* I am also in love with those lentil chips you had dipped in hummus, cracked pepper is my favourite 🙂
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
SO many good eats! I normally have a sweet tooth, but I have absolutely been craving salty foods a lot lately…rice cakes, lentil chips, and ooooo Pop Chips! I cannot get enough of them! Have you tried the Thai chili Pop Chips? They are amazing!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I haven’t 🙁 Our supply tends to be pretty limited here in Canada, so I haven’t seen a lot of the newer flavors in stores. The only ones I’ve come across are plain, sour cream & onion, salt & vinegar, and BBQ.
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
Hopefully they will make their way to Canada soon. They are SO good!
molly @ heart, sole & cereal
i feel like i’m pretty much always satisfying a craving but last night i satisfied my craving for cereal AND for cookies and had them both. they were delicious. and i think all your snacks and meals look amazing! i really don’t know why i keep not getting avocados when i go to the store but i need to change that now because your english muffin with avocado looks AMAZING to me.
Brittany
I think your snacks and cravings look delicious! When it comes to a snack I normally go for salty, but I do not play favorites and give sweet my attention too. A perfect snack has BOTH elements, always ending with the sweet item. The last craving I had was for a donut, and I satisfied that AND THEN SOME!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I saw those, and oh man… I can definitely tell you that I’ll be satisfying my own [out-of-the-blue ;)] donut craving tonight.
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom
Thanks for the pumpkin chili recipe.. i could eat pumpkin all the time and be happy…
As for snacks (or just in general) I LOVE salt. It’s actually one of the biggest vices in my healthy lifestyle. My mom loves salt too and we were never allowed to add salt to our food as children for fear that we would become salt-a-holics..well, I have. My blood pressure is fine though (thankfully). I’m gonna attribute that to my otherwise healthy living.. I’ve been craving peanut butter and animal crackers… but I haven’t given into that craving yet, even though I have both in the house..
Danielle @ Clean Food Creative Fitness
I have so much more of a sweet tooth too but every now and then I’ll get a salty craving and crave pretzels or popcorn every single time! So random!
Kendra
And here I was thinking I was the only person who sometimes eats salsa straight out of the jar…I am glad I’m not alone in that strange craving:) And hummus as well; sometimes I eat in by the spoonful more than I use it as a dip. An English muffin with avocado and jam sounds strangely delicious; maybe I shall have to try it some day!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hehe actually, half was avocado and half was jam, but I’ve tried the two together before and they ARE actually strangely delicious!
Caitlin
Mmm grilled cheese and tomato soup! It’s what I wanted for dinner last night so that’s what i had! And every morning for breakfast until today, i haven’t wanted oats…i’ve wanted eggs! Sooo random for me but rolling with it for now 🙂
Laura @ RunningJunkie123
I love, love, love salty, crunchy snacks! I think my favorite right now are Wheat Thins, the salsa or spicy buffalo. They are delicious:-)
I’ve also been on a huge apple and nut butter kick. Like twice a day. haha. Just doing what my body is telling me to do.
Lisa @ Lisa the Vegetarian
Yay for craving veggies for a snack! I love when that happens. Looks like you had lots of delicious foods. The last craving I had was for stuffed shells and jalapeno poppers and I decided to splurge and eat them even though I’m on a diet right now. Sometimes you just have to satisfy your cravings!
Jemma @ Celery and Cupcakes
Anything with hummus goes. Have you tried hummus with squash, so good!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I have! And it’s definitely good but I usually roll with nut butter and cinnamon when it comes to squash.
Ksenija @ Health Ninja
Volunteering, sounds interesting. What are you volunteering in, if you don’t mind to share?
And I am actually always happy to see WIAW like yours. I am a snack-person. My main meals are pretty small and I keep them healthy, because I love to snack on chocolate, yogurt, fruit, cereal … throughout the day. And seriously – I am talking throughout the whole day here. I cannot believe when people claim to have a “snacking-problem” because they had like a banana and a sandwich additional to their 3-meals a day. I have days which are like breakfast, yogurt, fruit, chocolate, lunch, cereal-bar, fruit with peanut butter, carrots, piece of toast, dinner, chocolate. And I am actually hungry, but then again my meals also look like snacks those days, since I am not that hungry to have a proper meal. Guess we just have to accept that days like this will come and go and on another day we are happy that 3 meals fit into the busy (or lazy, I tend to be like that on Sundays) schedule.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I volunteer in a few different hospitals, and I really wish it was something that I could talk more about, but issues surrounding confidentiality really freak me out 😯
Ksenija @ Health Ninja
Of course, I totally understand it. It is great to give something back. This year I finally made the time and joined a service club organization which raises money for charitable purposes.
Elizabeth@myneonrunningshoes
It’s rare I get salty cravings… I am a sweets person! Last night I had some amazing cake balls 🙂
Alex @ therunwithin
ya we are in a fight. You had to feature my two favorite things… pop chips and baked lentil chips. of course two things I do not have at this moment and now want more than anything. oh drool. great chatting with you last night, needs to happen way more. WAY MORE
Missy
Roasted Celery.
Which gets me so mad because it sounds like the most disordered thing ever but…ITS SO GOOD!
(I don’t like celery any other way). I actually wish celery had more calories ..lol
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I can honestly say that this is the first time I’ve ever heard of roasted celery. As for more calories? That’s what dips and spreads are for
Ashley @ Life and Fitness
Pumpkin in chili? I need to try this flavor combo asap.
Lisa
I always hate the introduction to posts haha, I suck at them. They take me the longest to write than the actual posts sometimes;)
That is weird you’re craving savory!;) I’m just always craving sweets it seems! It’s like I need to end my meal off on some sort of sweet note.
Um, those muffins look incredible! I definitely need to try them!
Khushboo
Haha I couldn’t help but laugh at the start of your post- I always feel like such a tool when I’m trying to begin a post…hence those random posts where I dive right in without small chat! Looks like some nomtastic eats to me- gah I can’t believe that I’ve incorporated the term “nom” into my vocabulary ;)! My snacks almost always tend to be on the sweet side but every so often my taste buds surprise me by asking for something salty…usually after I’ve had cereal for lunch/dinner! The last craving I satisfied was actually dinner: fillet mignon….knocked that red meat craving right out of the park!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ll forgive your use of ‘nom’ this one time, but only because I love you 😛
Sara @my less serious life
ah these oatmeal muffins are my favorite! although my boyfriend doesn’t like the chocolate chips (whaaaat!?!?) so i make half with chocolate (for me) and have with craisins (for him). delicious!
Rachel
oo gosh last night I was craving oatmeal cookies, and my Mom made some 😀 craving completely satisfied lol I think you’ve inspired me to bake some muffins this weekend 😀
Hollie
Does it count if you crave coffee LOL? For me personally, I have been on a sweet kick lately. I don’t even know why I haven’t been craving salty food but as is life. Where do you volunteer? (or what do you do I guess…did I miss that part?)
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Coffee cravings definitely count. And nope, you didn’t miss anything about me volunteering. I volunteer at a few different hospitals and I’m kind of paranoid about confidentiality issues so I tend not to bring it up too much.
Sarah @PickyRunner
The cheddar bunnies in your dinner was a nice touch! I love them. Anything cheesy in the shape of cute animals is my fave. I’m bookmarking the chocolate chip oatmeal muffins for later. SO GOOD. I’ve been craving some weird stuff lately too. like a bagel and chocolate milk yesterday for lunch? Okay… that’s strange. But I’m just taking it and going with it. My body wants what it wants and I can’t deny that!
Ashley
Your meals always look so tasty! Random question for you though, I know you live in Edmonton so where do you grocery shop? You always have different brands of food that I’ve never seen in the grocery stores I go to lol. Or I just don’t look in the right places. Do you frequent any of the health stores? Or are you just a lucky blogger who gets lots of stuff sent to you? 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I mostly shop at Save On Foods, Superstore, and Planet Organic. Which of the products are you not able to find? I can tell you where I get them 🙂
Miss Polkadot
Funny how you mention it. I’m usually all about my sweet meals and snacks but have been craving salty foods in the evening lately. The last craving I satisfied was a sweet one, though: One of the raw Chi(a) balls with various kinds of sprouted seeds and dried fruit in it. Sticky, sweet, delish.
My favourite snacks are granola, coconut flour yogurt (still!), almond butter and fruit. I’m in a real snack rut, though, and know I’ll have to change it up.
Oh, where are you volunteering? I used to do at a nursery home, too, but had to stop when university started.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I have yet to try coconut flour in yogurt, but it’ll definitely be happening soon! And I volunteer at a few different hospitals. I would love to talk more about it, but confidentiality issues make me kind of paranoid 😯
Katie @ KatieEnPursuit
Well thanks to your pics I’m craving hummus, jeez! I have been mowing through avocado this past week, so yum! As for snacks, can I choose both please? Why limit ourselves. Happy Wednesday girl!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha! You can definitely choose both – sweet and salty is where it’s at. And have you ever tried smashed avocado on toast with a sprinkle of sea salt? So, SO good!
Parita
I have yet to try the yogurt + PB combo. Need to get on that soon! Your day of eats looks wonderful – wish my meals were that pretty!
kris
The same thing has strangely happened to me! – i have the biggest sweet tooth, but for the past couple weeks i’ve found myself craving salty snacks. So weird! Two weeks ago all I was craving was miso soup which was so strange because I’m not a big soup person, nor have I ever really like miso soup. Guess I just wanted that saltiness. I’ve still been getting my fair share of sweetness…just with more saltiness mixed in now 🙂
Allison @ Life's a Bowl
I think something is in the air because dare I say that my sweet tooth has mellowed a bit and salt is my new BFF? Gasp! It started right around when we went on the cruise so I’m gonna blame it on the warm weather and all of the hard work aka “sweating” I did laying out by the pool and on the beach 😛 No but really, I’m still starting my day on a sweet note but have been adding in salty bits such as eggs + avocado, pretzels, Popchips [we stocked up at Costco this weekend], nuts, you name it… The bag of dark chocolate covered pretzels I got on Saturday is already gone.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Well it’s still pretty cold around these parts, so I can’t blame it on warmer weather and sweating by the pool 😛 I’m just thankful that my sweet tooth is still around for breakfast, because the day I switch to starting my morning with something savory is the day I start to worry 😯
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
So…I really want one of those muffins. They look delicious!
I’m always a sweet snack sort of person. Yogurt/cottage cheese and fruit or nut butter, sweet protein bars, daily chocolate…all necessary on the regular.
I don’t usually get salty cravings! Although, I crave sushi like 98% of the time and I had some yesterday, which made me happy 😀
Lucie
Salty!! I am on the salty track right now too. but there’s still nothing like a little daily piece of chocolate 🙂
All the food looks so good. That Mexican scramble?? I have to try. Have a good day love, don’t let anyone stress you out!
Kate @ Quarter Century Southern Living
Chocolate chip oatmeal muffins!? I need these in my life ASAP. I am a sweets girl through and through. But, I won’t turn down a bag or Doritos either. Whatever, all in moderation, right!?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Definitely! Need to feed the soul too 😉
Hayley@PBRunnerGirl
Peanut Butter! I feel like if it is not in my breakfast my day is incomplete! For snacks, definitely sweet! I make my own granola bars a lot!
