A little while ago, I came across this article on Thought Catalog called “What the Way You Eat Most of Your Meals Says About You,” and I couldn’t help but laugh when I spotted my eating style…
Meals?… What are them??? You eat snacks all throughout the day, never actually having a full-blown meal. As a kid, when cereal commercials said “this is part of a complete breakfast” it baffled you because a bowl of cereal is not only a full, hearty breakfast, it’s capable of being consumed as any other meal through the day. You often find yourself eating things served in pouches, bar form or handfuls, and you’re completely okay with that. You are living proof that the suggested servings on the nutritional pyramid are asinine. Do you, satisfied snacker, do you.
While I wouldn’t necessarily say that I never eat a legitimate meal (this girl loves her breakfasts), there’s no denying that I’m definitely a [satisfied] snacker… More often than not, I end up snacking my way from breakfast to dinner instead of trying to fit an actual lunch in there, which is why I’m kind of in love with this month’s What I Ate Wednesday theme…
If you’re not familiar with WIAW, it’s basically a day that’s devoted to documenting some eats and talking about all things food; aka: a day where it’s not safe for me to approach my computer unless I’m very well fed. It’s a day to get tempted inspired by the delicious eats of others, and maybe inspire others with some delicious eats of your own.
On that note, I wanted to share a collection of some of my favorite snacks with you guys. Maybe you’ll get some good ideas that’ll help you during those times where you find yourself standing in the kitchen, rifling through your cupboards with no idea as to what you want to much on. Oh yes, I’ve been there…
. – . – . – .
It should probably come as no surprise that cereal has been my #1 favorite thing to snack on lately…
Whether it’s with milk, yogurt, or simply on it’s own, it’s pretty much a guarantee that I’m eating cereal at least 2 or 3 times a day. I know cereal tends to get a pretty bad rap, but if you look for those that are made with whole grains and don’t contain too much sugar, then you have yourself an easy, healthy, and delicious snack.
Next up? Fruit…
I’m not sure exactly how many servings of fruit I go through in a day, but I’m going to go ahead and assume that it’s somewhere in the vicinity of 5 or 6. What can I say? I’m a big fan of nature’s candy. I add it to my yogurt, cereal, smoothies, and oats, or I just eat it on it’s own with either a sprinkle of cinnamon or a spoonful of almond butter. Delicious and nutritious – it’s basically a win-win.
And speaking of almond butter, that just so happens to be next on the list…
Honestly, I could put almond butter on pretty much anything, and it’s just as satisfying when eaten straight up out of the jar. It’s easily my favorite nut butter, with coconut coming in a close second…
And no snack list would be complete without yogurt…
Yogurt messes are pretty much perfect. Not only are they wonderfully filling, but they let me combine all my favorite foods (fruit, cereal, nut butter) into one delicious bowl of goodness. It’s actually kind of scary how much yogurt I go through on a pretty regular basis.
I also like to make sure that I always have some kind of homemade treats on hand…
Lately I’ve been all about the banana bread and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, but every so often muffins and protein bites show up too.
And for those times where you need something a little more grab-and-go?
Fruits, veggies, cheesestrings, hardboiled eggs, bars, Popchips, and apple chips tend to make up the bulk of my packed snacks.
And finally, no snack list would be complete without chocolate…
Whether in bar, chip, or pudding form, sometimes only chocolate will do…
. – . – . – .
So there you have it – some of my favorite things to snack on as of late. I try to make healthy and balanced choices when it comes to what I snack on, buuuuuuut I’m not going to sit here and pretend that ends up happening all the time. Sometimes a girl just needs a bowl of ice cream or a handful of candy, and that’s perfectly alright too.
Happy Wednesday, friends! 😀
What was the last thing you snacked on? A big bowl of cereal last night before bed.
Three things you end up snacking on most: Bananas, cereal, yogurt.
Lunch is overrated, true or false? True.
Emma @ Life's A Runner
Now that I don’t have to be at school all day, there is pretty much zero chance of me eating regular lunches, haha. During the summer it seems like all I do is snack, and then its dinner! Also, WHERE do you find coconut butter? I’m totally obsessed with coconut but I can’t find it anywhere!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Planet Organic! That place is a gold mine for all sorts of delicious foods…
Ashley @ Eat Run Live Happy
I’ve been snacking on a lot of Gilato at night. During the day, I go right for cereal.
I love to snack on string cheese, cereal, and pineapple. My son LOVES sunflower seed butter. He won’t eat almond or peanut butter.
Lift, Sleep, Eat
Oh wow…cereal/yoghurt/chocolate! Me through & through aha; it all looks so delicious. I couldn’t imagine a life without cereal..it is so versatile!!
I end up eating loads of yoghurt/oats(a small bowl kind of counts as a snack…) and I don’t know what the 3rd thing would be..probably some strange concoction I’ve made up haah!
Last thing I snacked on was a small bowl of Caramel ice cream..yum!!
Lunch is definitely overrated…my least favourite meal of the day.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oats are another one of my favorite snacks. Have you ever tried mixing yogurt into them? Especially when they’re still warm? Holy.wow is it all sorts of amazing.
Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen
I’m kind of a snacker too. I love almond butter too and it definitely qualifies as a snack on it’s own 🙂
Victoria @ Reluctantly Skinny
Lunch is probably my favorite meal of the day – but only because I don’t eat breakfast in the morning! I do consume cereal or yogurt messes for the majority of my lunches, so we’re kinda on the same page =)
It’s scary how much yogurt I consume in one week..and fruit! At least it’s healthy =)
Caitlin
Last thing i snacked on was a yogurt/almond milk/cereal/raisin/craisin mess i made before we left for the park…delicious 😉 i’m a huge snacker too…cereal, pretzels/pop chips, and dried fruit are my fav things to grab and go (usually where i eat my snacks)….i like lunch though too…usually it’s smaller than breakfast or dinner since i snack a lot in between 😉
Kim hoeltje
Your pictures really make me want to eat some cereal. I am a big time snacker. I dot like eating big or “real” meals and feeling too full. Last snack I had was a luna cookie dough bar. Yum!! Go to snacks include bars of any kind (luna, clif, pure protein, nugo), pretzels, annnnnd frozen banana slices 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That reminds me that I have to stick some bananas in the freezer… There’s just something about eating them frozen that makes them so much more satisfying… It’s like they become creamier.
Hollie
Not sure I have told you but I save my yogurt containers too. I literally thought I was the only person to do that LOL…I guess glad to hear I’m not I suppose. As far as snacking goes, I’m def not a big snacker as much as I know it is unblogger of me. I literally just eat 3 or 4 square meals a day and that is that. 😉
Christine @ Gotta Eat Green
I have been obsessed with cereal lately as well. I tell myself every night before bed that I will make a smoothie in the morning… but come 6am all I can think about it cereal! It is just so easy and delicious… I can’t help myself.
sara @ fitcupcaker
I love almond butter, its probably my favorite too, especially the crunchy, yum!! And ive said this before also, I could eat cereal anytime too…it just so happens that my husband and step son love the not so healthy kind so thats whats usually in my house. I do love puffins cinnamon harvest though!
Missy
What was the last thing you snacked on?
Corn Quinoa and Sesame “rice cakes” with marinara and melty fake cheez.
Three things you end up snacking on most:
Peanut Butter, Pickles, Popcorn <— Illiteration!
Oh and lots of protein (veggie meats, fish, eggs).
Lunch is overrated, true or false?
True. It makes me feel dull when I eat a heavy meal. I prefer a light salad or veggie plate supplemented by snacks like fruit and nut butters.
De @ Cooking for the Other Half
We definitely have the same favorite foods. I could probably survive on cereal alone.
The last thing I snacked on was some whole grain crackers and a cinnamon Laughing Cow cheese wedge. Mmm.
Lauren @ The Homeostatic Mindset
You are my total eating/food idol. Seriously. Half the time my brain is like, “What would Amanda eat?” This comes in handy when I’m hungry, and am craving something, yet feeling a little anxious about actually eating it, instead of just giving into ED. Your WIAW always inspire me, and give me strength! It sounds crazy, but you have given me “permission” to eat cereal, fruit, and HONEY. I honestly don’t know how to thank you, cause I don’t think you really understand your impact. I find your posts SO helpful. <3
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Heart = melted. Girl… I don’t even know what to say. If you ever need some support or just someone to talk to, don’t ever hesitate to hit me up <3
Ashley @ Eat Run Live Happy
I read your comment and wanted to just tell you that I’ve been there. Being afraid of foods because you read something or someone said something bad about them. Good wholesome, nutritious food gets such a bad rap in your mind. It’s hard to talk over the voices sometimes but you can do it! Stay strong!
Lauren @ The Homeostatic Mindset
Aww, thank you so much for you support, Ashley!! Everything you said is so true. I really appreciate you reaching out <3
Ari @ The Pace of it All
You are killing me, with all this deliciousness!!! DROOLING OVER HERE! Love chocolate, of course… and you’re making me think I need to eat more fruit lol. And actually try almond butter… I think it’s just not as sweet as I’m used to..
meredith
I always hated lunch. I found it stupid. Yes, stupid. I can never decide what the heck I want for lunch, I would have preferred to just have breakfast again yet then there are days when I don’t want sweet and maybe want savory food but eh, never can quite figure it all out…I was never a big snacker, unless you count all of the picking I do while I am cooking…my favorite snack though would have to be apples with peanut butter, which I eat every night as my dessert but we can call it a snack.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hehe my biggest beef with lunch is the fact that I have to pack it and usually eat it rushed or on the go. I have to admit that I don’t mind it so much when it’s some kind of breakfast food, though. I could probably eat breakfast 3 times a day and be perfectly content.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
I was actually snacking on a cheese string while I was reading this, so that answers that :-p
And office work means that it’s easier for me to have a full lunch on my break rather than trying to snack at my desk all day – although an afternoon (and sometimes a morning) snack still happens!
I think the snacks I go for most often are protein bars (storebought or homemade) Greek yogurt with fruit, nuts or nutbutter, or trail mix. Note to self: get more trail mix.
And I think I can dub you the queen of Oikos. I’m trying to eat it more often for the probiotic benefits, and I can’t say I blame you for going through as much as you do 😉 It’s pretty fabulous stuff!
Brittany
Oh man that description fits you perfectly with the cereal part!! You really know how to make cereal look damn good!! I have been snacking a lot more lately opposed to eating “full meals” and it’s worked! I just bounce around and eat whateva I wanna! I snack most on nuts, fruit, and chocolate chips. I should just make my own trail mix! That just came to me after realizing what I snack most on haha.
Claire @ Flake and Cake
So many awesome snack ideas here! I love apple sauce and almond butter as snacks, they are beyong delicious. Happy WIAW!
Miss Polkadot
Amanda, I used to fully understand your preference … until I tried hazelnut butter. Go and get yourself a jar – it’s amazing :). Still, I’m not opposed to the almond amazingness – there’s a place in my heart for both of them :). Oh, and other varities have a spot in there, too.
Up until not too long ago I’d have whole-heartedly agreed on lunch being overrated. With my recent progress, though, I’ve come to embrace the midday meal and make it a proper sit-down at the kitchen table one. That’s not to say I was judging people who prefer snacking around but I guess my mum’s insistence on me having actual meals is showing up. Yes, she actually asked me about that in a recent phone conversation …
Top three snacks? I’ll have to cheat slightly here: fruit, my current Greek yogurt bowl concoction (adding such a lot of different foods to it now that I’m considering it ridiculous myself already :D) and hazelnut butter on anything. Chocolare is an obvious one.
The last thing I snacked on was banana softserve with hazelnut butter.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Awwr I wish I could try the hazelnut butter, but most nuts besides almonds give me a slight reaction. It’s not as bad as my allergy to peanuts, but it’s not exactly pleasant either. And I think it’s awesome that you’re embracing lunch 🙂 I don’t mind it when I can actually sit down and eat something that I enjoy, but since lunches are usually packed and more often than not on the go, I find it just easier to snack away.
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat
I love snacking on fruit and cereal. Definitely two of my favorite things! I really need to get some almond butter. I’m a huge PB fan (coconut butter is good too), but I think I need to branch out a bit!
What was the last thing you snacked on? PB Energy Bites.
Three things you end up snacking on most: Luna bars, apples and raw almonds.
Lunch is overrated, true or false? True.
Amanda Fraijo-Tobin (@FraijoManda)
I’m the same way – I go through LOTS of yogurt. And most nights my night snacks are messy yogurt bowls as well 🙂
Khushboo
If ever I needed a reminder how much I love snacks, this post did the trick. I love that you added chocolate and not-so-healthy options to the list…it’s all about striking a balance in every respect right! Recently some of my favorite snacks have included:
-Cantaloupe bowls filled with Greek yogurt
-Freshly roasted corn with garam masala seasoning
-Apple & almonds
-Applesauce & yogurt
-Lindt chocolate
-Carrot & cucumber sticks with peanut butter
-Chia pudding
-Ice cream
….can you tell I have somewhat of a sweet tooth ;)?
Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health
You should be a spokesmodel for cereal/oatmeal! All of your snacks look delicious. The last snack I ate was the last of those donuts for dessert last night. I always have a banana everyday too as well as an apple!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The last of the donuts? Say it ain’t so! That means I can’t try and guilt you into sending me some 😉 They really did look amazing.
Katherine
I just ate breakfast and this post is already making me ready for a snack! Ok here are my answers to the questions:
What was the last thing you snacked on? A spoonful of peanut butter! Guilty.
Three things you end up snacking on most: Bananas, greek yogurt, GRAPES!
Lunch is overrated, true or false? Super true. I would rather a big breakfast!
Jessie
If we ever get the chance to meet, I know exactly what to bring you.. some yogurt & a couple boxes of cereal 🙂
Pickyrunner
I’m definitely learning to love snacking and fruit is my primary snack of choice in the summer months especially but I do love my meals. Having a big dinner is what I grew up on so I mostly just snack and eat small meals throughout the day to make it to that. But there are some days where I do snack right through lunch because I’m just not in the mood for a traditional sandwich
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
Is that Cascadian Farms Cinnamon Crunch cereal that I see?? I LOVE that stuff!! It is in my cereal bowl this morning :).
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It is! I love it too and I’m kind of bummed that I can’t buy it up here 🙁 I’ve actually been thinking about ordering it off of iHerb because I’m going through some serious withdrawals!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
I can’t blame you there!! I would be so sad if I could not buy it in a grocery store! 🙁
Tamara
What was the last thing you snacked on? A small piece of peanut butter fudge we bought up north a couple of weekends ago.
Three things you end up snacking on most: Bananas, cherries, snack bars.
Lunch is overrated, true or false? False. I am a BIG fan of lunch! 🙂
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables
Oh my gosh your snacks look SO good! Barney butter is my favorite!!!
Liz @ The Girl on Fire Now
I last munched on pretzels with peanut butter; that will change: oatmeal here I come!
Pretzels, yogurt, unsweetened apple sauce
True!
Kat
so this entire post was basically one giant food porn for me lol Holy smokes girl your pictures are stinkin’ amazeballs! Im a total snacker too, so I can relate. I swear I dip into the nut butter jars way more than I should, although who the heck decided 2T was a serving size anyway? So not enough in my book….
And now that Ive tried Puffins and Kashi shredded wheat, I can honestly say Im a freakin cereal whore. I literally cannot.get.enough!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
😆 I still remember when I rediscovered my love for cereal. I went so long convinced that I didn’t like it, but after a few innocent tastes? Yeah… that basically turned out to be bull…
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers
Do we share the same brain? Belly? 😉 I have been loving cereal lately, of course fruit and chocolate are always up on my list.
Ashley @ OurPersonalRecords
I just finished a a Greek yogurt with granola! I usually don’t have yogurt for breakfast, and am curious to see how it will hold me over until lunch. I end up eating a lot of fruit snacks – probably more than someone my age should. Lunch is NOT overrated. It’s one of my favorite meals. I think I enjoy it because if I pack a good lunch I have something to look forward to during my morning at work. After lunch I look forward to dinner. What can I say? I love food.
Lawrence
Was that bacon behind the protein bites!? lol 😉
My late night “snack” last night was some homemade Turkey Chili I had 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Heh no… just a table cover that, now that you mention it, does kind of look like bacon…
alice
Cereal is the ultimate any time meal.. fact! It is just so perfect it makes me not care in the slightest about lunch foods, I’m happy with just another big bowl of breakfast!
The last snack I had was banana chips dipped into almond butter..yum.
x
Jemma @ Celery and Cupcakes
I literally just snacked on some grapes and a small orange after lunch. Loving my fruit at the moment.
Lisa
Haha, I can so totally relate to that!!
I am a huge Snacker at heart, and I think I ate about 10 different “meals” yesterday. Normal meals are overrated.
I’ve been Snacking on cereal up the wazoo. Seriously, it’s like my go to thing now, and I never used to even like the stuff. I think it was you who got me addicted;)
Yah, totally agree Lunch is overrated. I actually just had second Breakfast as Lunch yesterday and I will probably do the saem again.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
More than happy to accept the responsibility of getting you addicted to cereal And I’m pretty sure that the only time I actually look forward to a meal is if it’s breakfast related… I’m thinking that breakfast for lunch is a very high possibility today…
Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness
I’m the same way! Lunch is overrated for sure. All those cereal pics are inspiring me to make a bowl right now actually. I’m usually snacking on berries, cantaloupe, cottage cheese, popcorn, some sort of bar, turkey, etc. I probably only “go get lunch” like a sandwich or a salad once during the work week. Alright I’m starving, time for breakfast 🙂
Parita
I’m not much of a weekday snacker. My 8-5 (somtetimes later) job keeps me on track, and lunchtime is something I look forward to. The weekends, on the other hand, are a different story. I could snack my way through Saturday and Sunday like it’s nobody’s business!
The last “snack” I had was a “small” handful of chocolate chips last night. Totally hit the spot!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I had exactly the same experience with chocolate just a few nights ago… must be something going around 😉
Lisa
One of the last things I snacked on was Greek yogurt with cinnamon and almond butter mixed in. So yummy!!! 🙂
