Yesterday.was.hot.
I realize that may be nothing compared to the temperatures that some of you have to deal with, but I’m Canadian… we’re not made for that kind of weather! Case in point: the power went off for about an hour in my part of downtown due to the huge number of people cranking up the AC, and I definitely contributed to that. Thankfully, there are some steps one can take to beat the heat. For example…
Do not… start your day with hot tea…
In my defence… yeaaaaah I’ve got nothing. This tea is amazing and I’m an addict.
Do not… eat a hot breakfast…
Eggy oats layered with with plain Greek yogurt and topped with almond butter, and honey.
In my defence, IΒ do wait for them to cool off to room temperature before digging in.
Do… snack on plenty of fresh/frozen fruit…
Do… eat fresh salads for lunch…
… along with cold leftovers…
Sesame chicken stir fry.
Do not… opt to walk to your afternoon hair appointment instead of driving in a car that has AC …
Do… linger in the frozen foods section of a convenience store on your way back home…
Do… drink plenty of cold fluids…
Trilogy kombucha // Starbucks Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher
… and make sure to eat the ice afterwards….
Do… enjoy cool, creamy desserts from the depths of your fridge…
Zensoy chocolate/vanilla pudding
Do not… turn on your oven – eat breakfast for dinner instead…
Yogurt mess – Plain Greek yogurt mixed with frozen banana, chunky applesauce, Kashi Cinnamon Harvest crumbles, almond butter, and cinnamon.
Do… end the night on a cold and creamy note…
Vanilla ice cream // chocolate chips… in a freak thunderstorm.
And that.is.that. – What I Ate [to beat the heat]. Thankfully, yesterday seems to have been a freak incident and we’re back to our more moderate temperatures today. Good thing, too, because temperatures like that definitely don’t do me any favors – not only do I get all lethargic and poofy from storing water like a camel, but my appetite disappears and comes back with a vengeance the next day – I’m already bracing myself for the worst…
Happy Wednesday, friends! π
. – . – . – .
Do you eat ice?
What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? Favorite add-ins?
What’s the weather like for you right now? What’s your ideal temperature?
Alex @ therunwithin
this may sound silly, or not, but I love having cold leftovers this time of year. Like anything I will eat cold for that reason. so freaking tasty.
Rachael @ Pizza, Run, Repeatza
I keep seeing those eggy oats and I keep thinking that I am going to try them, but then I forget. Keep it up and some day I might actually make those.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
π I’m the same way when it comes to trying new things I see around the blog world. I put it off forever and then kick myself for not trying it sooner.
Lauren
I don’t mind it being hot, but it’s the humidity which puts me in a funk. I hate it and it does not help my hair AT ALL. Hello, frizz ball!
I always go back and forth between favorites but the last thing I was craving was chocolate and peanut butter ice cream in a chocolate dipped sprinkle cone. I used to get it ALL the time when I was a kid. Ahh, food memories.
I’m the worst with drinking hot stuff when it’s scorching hot outside. It doesn’t help the fact I sweat a lot… Not fun.
Hannah@Mindrunningwild
Ice is nice.
I, too am not a huge fan of ice cream; I’d rather have a thick smoothie. If it wasn’t so sweet, maybe. Savoury ice cream? That said, since I’m moving to Taiwan (land of hotness), I’m thinking I’m going to search out matcha ice cream and sesame ice cream and give them a try.
Ideally I like my temperatures between 50 and 70 (I should move to Canada?) but next year I”m not going to get that hahahah.
Miss Polkadot
Believe me, 32 Β°C is HOT to me, too. I feel like I shouldn’t complain when others go through true heatwaves but this was the hottest temperature we got recently, too. All I wanted to do was sit in the shadow – there’s no AC in my place -, eat banana softserve and frozen fruit and drink cold beverages. Though I couldn’t stay away from my favourite tea, either.
Right now I’m wishing for warmer temperatures and a decreased chance of rain, though. Funnily enough, my favourite temperature depends on where I am. When at my parents’ with a nice patio to lie out in the sun I prefer warmer temperatures than when at my city flat where I’m missing the “real” outdoors.
Glad to know I’m not the only one eating the ice after drinking a chilled beverage. My mum thinks it’s weird.
Happy Wednesday and I hope the weather stays nice for you for a bit longer!
HollieisFueledByLOLZ
It finally got hot again. I say this like I indeed wanted the summer weather. I don’t really know what I like, honestly around 60 degrees and I’d be okay. 60-80. We should just all move to California apparently. I think a big summer thing for me is I def start craving a ton more salads. I want everything fresh and cold. It just feels so much better in my opinion.
Elizabeth@myneonrunningshoes
It was 108 this weekend in Houston! 90 is like a cold front haha. I am an ice addict (probably due to the heat). Ice cream, smoothies, and pools are essentials to beat the heat!!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
A cold front? π― I would die in triple digit weather. Either that or I would refuse to go outside. But I suppose you guys crank the AC in the summer like we crank the heat in the winter….
Crystal@TheFastFitRunner
Yes, can’t have a lot of sympathy for 90 degrees, but…..I can say I don’t do so well in sub-zero temperatures (although surprisingly, 10 degrees is fine). =)
Half frozen watermelon is quite good also! Give it a try. One of my fave fruits.
Maria @ Pappa Don't Preach
I used to love chewing the ice at the end of a cold drink. But these days, I actually prefer my water and beverages at room temperature. It’s an odd thing. Is that supposed to happen as you age? lol
The weather here has been less than stellar. It’s been ridiculous humid and in the mid 80s but it’s constantly cloudy and we’ve been getting periods of storms. So obnoxious – especially when I want to lay at the beach! Whomp whomp!
Reba - Not So Perfect Life
I love ice cream but I try not to have it that often. I do not eat my ice cubs because it gives me brain freezes!
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat
Oh yeah…the weather is insane here too! The air is sooooo thick because it’s super humid outside. It’s crazy! I like the heat, but not the humidity! I like it when it’s around 80 degrees, no humidity and a bright blue sky. That’s the best!
All that fresh fruit looks soooo good!
I love coconut milk ice cream! Sprinkles are a must and sometimes I like adding in some chocolate syrup too.
Happy Hump Day! π
Jess
I really find it hard to adjust in the heat – running is particularly difficult because I never carry any water etc. with me – I find CamelBak’s way too uncomfortable and the hand-held things just seem to slow me down. So I drink a lot beforehand and I’m sure to have an electrolyte-based sugar free concoction…plus, I chew a tonne of ice when I get back! I agree that it’s a brilliant way to cool down.
Banana soft-serve is my favourite ice cream, either on its own or with a peanut flour sauce – all other non-dairy ice-creams just tend to be full of sugar and junk, plus I think banana soft serve has the best texture anyway.
My ideal temperature is anywhere between 5 and 17 C – anything else is too hot for me, or there’s a risk of ground frost which I hate because it messes with my running.
xxx
Jess
Argh, and there should NOT be an apostrophe in ‘CamelBaks’ – I swear it’s a typo. God, I hate grammatical errors on blogs and I do know how to convert a word from singular to plural!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha! I can be kind of a grammar Nazi myself, but we’re all allowed our occasional slip-ups. Just blame it on being a) tired, b) not-yet-caffinated, or c) multitasking
kris
Ahh what I would give to have a very berry hibiscus refresher! They don’t have those in Hong Kong and I can’t seem to understand why – it’s freakishly hot here! It was 32C here today too, with 95% humidity and I could have used one π My ideal temperature is about 70F. Thats the best!
And now I wish I had a cold creamy bowl of ice cream to eat before bed. Thanks a lot, Amanda! ;P hehe jkjk
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh girl don’t even talk to me about inspiring envy! WHO has been travelling all over Greece this past little while and making me completely jealous? Who? It couldn’t have been you, could it? π
kris
ummm, *hides*, maybe? >.< hehe
Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health
I’m loving all of this fresh fruit! That’s my favorite way to cool off, or with a smoothie!
It has also been hot here in Cali, it’s like some kind of heat wave, I think. I hope. Because I want it to let up a little. It is killing my afternoon running!
Laura Agar Wilson (@lauraagarwilson)
Wow, that looks like some hot weather! We have been seeing it on the news that the States is getting it hot, we really wouldn’t mind if you guys would like to share some over the Atlantic π I am a smoothie fiend most of the time but even more so in warm weather!
Carly @ Snack Therapy
The fact that you sipped on hot tea makes me sweat just thinking about. It has been crazy hot over here (triple digits for at least a week in a row) and I’m positively dying. I walked to school yesterday and was drenched in sweat by the time I got to class. Lovely.
I’m loving that watermelon though :). Amaaaazing.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Triple digits? Insanity. I walked to my hairdresser appointment and had to make pit stops long the way so that I could mooch AC from the stores and avoid showing up as a hot mess π
Caitlin
I love munching on ice π definitely one of my favorite ways to cool down in the summer! I still drink hot tea every day throughout the day, though…love it and keeps me going, so i chase it with cold water and i’m good to go π
Christine@ Apple of My Eye
I’ve been nomming so hard on fresh fruit lately! It tastes amazing cold and straight from the fridge on a hot day :). And I’m totally agree with you that cold desserts are the way to go this time of year! I’ve been having some Italian gelato every night in the flavor Salted Caramel and it is TO DIE FOR.
Great eats love! <3
Liz (formerly VeggieGirl)
Hang in there with the heat! It’s sunny here (finally – so much rain lately otherwise), but it’s HUMID. Blech.
Favorite ice cream flavor = anything with chocolate & caramel.
Catherine
I feel you on the heat; in southern AL though, we have 2 seasons: summer & not summer, haha. After 29 years, I’m STILL not used to the stifling humidity. And kind of like you, I mistakenly ate hot soup before taking my lunchtime walk yesterday. Talk about BRUTAL.
Got to say, though, your fruit & ice cream look delicious. I think my all time favorite is cookies & cream or plain vanilla (but a high-quality, natural vanilla).
I always eat leftover ice, but definitely in the summer!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Vanilla will always, always be the best ice cream flavor. I mean, it’s basically the perfect base for whatever you want to toss in it π
Annabella
My favorite used to be chocolate chip cookie dough. Now it is salted caramel all the way!
The weather has been pretty nice. High around 30 and low around 20. And sunny every day!
Katherine
I started my day with some tea too, and I regretted it when I couldn’t get cool afterwards! This heat stinks, but what can we do? Smoothies, frozen grapes, and lots of cold dinner dishes are what help me survive. Also, I find I drink my family out of house and home! Whatever it takes to beat the heat! I love this post! It’s a fun take on the typical WIAW!
Megan @ runningonjava
I honestly think there’s something special about Starbucks ice. I don’t normally (read: ever) eat the ice out of cups at restaurants or at home, but always do from Starbucks. Maybe because they’ve absorbed all the caffeine and I’m trying to make the most of it? Yep, that’s probably it.
I always tend to eat food that matches the weather…it’s weird. It’s rainy and cold? I’m having hot oatmeal. It’s hot and humid? I make a yogurt bowl or overnight oats. Very weird like that. But yes – standing in the freezer section is definitely a great way to beat the heat!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I actually think my weather matching ways are way weirder… I ate cold cereal and watermelon all winter, and now I’m eating hot oats and cutting back on the melon. My body is backwards… or maybe I need to move to Australia where the seasons are the opposite of ours.
Christine @ Gotta Eat Green
I love any frozen fruit. Bananas are obviously my favourite, but I also love frozen grapes, strawberries, and cherries. They take longer to eat and are so refreshing on a hot day.
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles
Haha “poofy.” Yesterday my sister and I walked in sweltering heat to get froyo. The good: we got froyo. The bad: we didn’t want to leave the shop because that meant a 20 minute walk back home during which we would be melting under the power of the sun. Even the temperatures in Ohio have been pretty mild compared to some other parts of the country (West, I’m looking at you), but that doesn’t mean it’s not sweat-inducing!…and it definitely does not make me want to go back to school in the fall, when I get to deal with 90-100+ weather every day until the end of October.
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom
It’s always hot here in FL, but this summer I have not eaten a hot breakfast at all. Thank goodness for overnight oats so that I can still get my oatmeal in! I really like plain strawberry ice cream…but it has to be REAL strawberry ice cream.
Ksenija @ Health Ninja
We had such a freaky hot day recently too. No fun, I can tell you, especially if you live in a climate that isn’t made for that kind of heat. Kitty was lying stretched out on the cold floor all day long. But that tea is bad when it’s hot is a myth. Actually they do drink mint leaf tea all day long in Morocco, it somehow helps to cool down. It’s way worth to drink really ice cold stuff, since your body starts to heat up, trying to bring the beverage to body temperature. Strange how nature works…
Ksenija @ Health Ninja
“it’s way worse” of course.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve actually heard that as well, but I’m not sure how much I’m willing to believe it considering I was basically sweating buckets by the time I finished.
Ksenija @ Health Ninja
π it’s probably something special about the peppermint? And they also don’t drink it hot but warm, so that might help.
Pickyrunner
That’s hotter than it gets here! Once we reach 80 I’m a sweating dog. And I’m the epitome of a don’t. My lunch is my only cold meal of the day.. I can’t go without hot chocolate in the morning and I love my grilled bagels at breakfast. But fruit is plentiful dying the summer for me too. The only way to survive!
Chelsea
Moving from Michigan to North Carolina I know how you feel. I am just not built for 90 degree weather every. single. day. I also get puffy – my husband doesn’t understand why I hate it so much and it’s mostly because of the fat feeling. Nothing like needing to be in as little clothes as possible and feeling like a whale!
Kelly @ Femme Fitale
I LOOOVE the heat!!! I think 28ΒΊ C is the perfect temperature, though. Enjoy!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
28 is perfect? Crazy talk! See, as much as I’d love to live in Australia, I’m pretty sure I’d never be able to -just- because of how crazy hot it gets there. And then there’s the spiders… π―
Kelsey Yoki
I live in Duluth, Minnesota, and when temps get that high…we tend to fall apart here as well. I do much better with the 70’s. The humidity is usually what gets to me! I loved this post. =)
Ashley @ Eat Run Live Happy
It’s been raining here for 4 days! It’s supposed to rain all weekend too… I’m getting a little cranky from it.
My favorite Ice cream/ Gelato.. Is the Caramel Sea Salt! It’s amazing. But Birthday Cake is a close second.
I had Brinner yesterday too. It’s the best.
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
I really need to start freezing fruit more often. You are right. That makes for the perfect Summer treat!
I am definitely an ice chomper, but only when it is left over from a drink at a restaurant usually. Otherwise, I don’t find myself eating it too often.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Same here – only with drinks when I’m out. Plus I think it’s bad for your teeth, so probably not a good habit to get in to.
Alice
I love this post and am a full supporter of eating breakfast for dinner as much as possible.
It’s pretty average here in England, I want it to be a tiny bit hotter but not too hot because I can’t handle crazy heat. I always eat the ice + my fave icecream? Got to be pistachio π
x

Jemma @ Celery and Cupcakes
hahaha! You’re very British there with drinking tea even in the hot weather. I love it, but have been having iced green tea lately.
Jo @ Living Mint Green
Umm, yes. My hunger has been non-existant for a few days and it decided to come back at 3am last night. It was 42C with the humidex down here yesterday – it felt like Mexico!
Court and I don’t have AC so we filled our hot tub with cold water and soaked in it last night. By 9pm, we were still outside in our swimsuits drying off in the sun & sweating bullets. Crazy, hey?!
I love the heat – but I need a nice cool trade wind mixed in with it. Hawaii has the perfect climate, in my opinion.
Lately I’ve been enjoying Marble Slab’s pistachio ice cream with pistachios mixed in, or butter pecan with pecans. SO GOOD. Buuut…. all time fav ice cream flavour is probably mint chocolate chip – only if it’s green! It’s not as minty if it’s not green. π
Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness
Woof that is HOT. Is Edmonton mostly humid or dry? boston is always muggy, i think we’re supposed to get into the 80s today, 90s tomorrow, and it is HOT. i dont even mind dry heat that much, but when its muggy, yikes. and I LOVE cold leftovers for dinner. that chicken stir fry looks good! good luck beating the heat! for me mint chocolate chip hard froyo with chocolate sprinkles helps too π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
We’re usually pretty dry around here, but yesterday was -bad- because of the coming storm. It was so muggy, you could have probably scooped up the air with a spoon.
Lucie
I feel you on the heat. As much as I love summer, more than 30Β°C are difficult – and I store water too, my feet look like the ones from an elephant π
Can we still be friends when I tell you that I am not a fan of Ice Cream at all? I know, so strange, but it just does not speak to me. I rather turn to some frozen gummy bears or Ragusa π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Don’t like coffee and now don’t like ice cream?! Eeeeeeh I dunno girlie… that’s definitely going to put some strains on our relationship. Just kidding… you know I love you <3
Lisa
Boy, do I feel you on the heat!! It’s been brutal over here – which I don’t like to complain about since it typically is all about the rain in Victoria;)
Haha – I did the same and start my day with hot tea which I realized was a bad combo with the workout I did after….um, not smart.
I’m all about Snacking on the fresh fruit during these hot days! It’s my saving grace – that smoothies, and salads. They’re all I typically crave.
And favorite ice cream flavor for me is boring vanilla. I like that you added chocolate chips to your thought. Spices it up a little.
Oh and even when it’s SO hot – I always must have hot coffee, for some reason I don’t like the iced stuff.
