Home sweet home π
I actually flew in yesterday morning, but after being awake for 36+ hours, I passed out about 5 seconds after I walked through the door. Okay, that’s not entirely true. I was basically too exhausted to fall asleep, so after tossing and turning for a little while, I puttered around my place and made it look like I was trying to clean out my suitcase for a couple of hours before finally passing out on my couch. Unfortunately, I only managed to stay asleep for about 1.5 hours, so that coupled with some serious jet lag has me feeling a bit like a zombie today π―
But enough about me… how have you guys been?!? I’ve missed you! I managed to do a little bit of blog reading while I was away, but rushed vacation reading definitely isn’t the same as actually being able to sit down and spend some quality time catching up. Call me nerdy, but I really do enjoy it. That’s enough sappiness for now, though — let’s get to the good stuff.
I hope you guys don’t mind if I spent the next couple of days talking about my trip, but I need to do it while it’s fresh in my mind or I’ll never get around to it. I promise not to go overboard on the recaps — since I know that can get a bit dull — but I did want to share a few things from my travels, starting with What I Ate Wednesday in Hawaii…
Let’s kick things off with my absolute favourite part — ALL the fresh fruit…
Oh.em.geeeeeee. With all the farmers’ markets and roadside stands sprinkled all over Kauai, I’m pretty sure I ate my weight in fruit over the past week. From papayas, to bananas, to mangoes, to pineapples, I just couldn’t seem to get enough. In my defense, though, I had to load up while I could — the tropical fruit we get back home is nothing like the fresh fruit they have on the island. So sweet, so juicy, and so cute…
Yep… I’m pretty sure I would have been satisfied living solely off fruit the entire time I was down there, but don’t worry — I still managed to squeeze in plenty of non-fruit eats as well.
Since I still wake up ridiculously early even on vacation, breakfasts were usually eaten in the hotel room (courtesy of the in-room coffee maker) and contained all the usual suspects…
Oats. Almond butter. Yogurt. Banana. Nothing too fancy, but it did a good job of holding me over until the rest of the world woke up and we could go out and grab some grub.
Remember how I said that vacations make me do strange things? This time was no exception…
Breakfast bar at Kukui’s on Kalapaki Beach — bacon, eggs Benedict, hash browns, roast beef, some kind of veggie/rice salad, and raw salmon that I didn’t end up eating *shudder*
Mango BBQ ribs at Duke’s.
BBQ chicken flatbread at Duke’s.
Roast beef? Eggs Benedict? BBQ Ribs? Who am I?! Definitely not things you normally see here on Spoons, but when in Rome on vacation… Unfortunately, J got hit with food poisoning the second day of our trip, so the rest of our eats weren’t all that exciting. We did, however, end things on a high note with a slice of Duke’s famous hula pie…
Macadamia nut ice cream, chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and a chocolate cookie crust… Holy.wow. Let’s just say this pie is definitely famous for a reason.
Other than that, I did a lot of snacking. We spent most of our time hiking, walking, swimming, and kayaking, so snacks like dried fruit, bars, pretzels, and nuts were definitely lifesavers…
I hope you guys are doing well! And I’ll see you tomorrow for a vacation themed Thinking Out Loud π

That fruit? Geez it looks amazing!! I’m glad you had a great trip π
Mary Frances
Between the cutest bananas EVER and that macademia nut ice cream, I’d say it was a successful trip! π
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl
Okay…. I think a recreation of the Hula Pie is in order!!! I’ve heard the fresh fruit in Hawaii is to die for.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Confession: I may or may not have already looked up the recipe so that I can recreate one at home π
Gemma @ Retired Cardio Queen
All the food there looks delicious but the fruit definetely takes the cake! The fruits here in Ontario are so bland and old tasting from their long travels to my table. I am glad you enjoyed your trip and will anxiously await the recap!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries
Oh my goshhhhh! Food heaven right there! All your photos look delicious! I am a huge pineapple girl. It’s like candy to me! Mmmmm. I also love mango. I think I’m just meant to live in a tropical area. Maybe it’s a sign I need to move to Hawaii. π
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom
Bananas that size are actually natural in nature, but the bananas that we buy in stores are so huge because of all the extra stuff pumped onto them (along with selective breeding between the plants)…so I LOVE when I can eat the baby bananas. They’re just enough to tide me over π I ate SO MUCH fresh fruit in Hawaii (a pineapple each morning) and in Costa Rica. Anywhere I can get fresh fruit is heaven!
Karey @ Nutty About Health
OMG, that pie looks amazing!! So does that chicken flatbread… mmm! All that fruit – I’d be in heaven with that too! Fave tropical fruit… probably pineapple or honey mangoes. π
Lauren
Fresh fruit is ONE thing I can never say no to eating! And you’re right… When you’re on vacation, every food tastes so much better especially when it’s out of your normal routine!
I definitely would have eaten my weight in pineapple and mangoes. I’m prettttty sure fresh pineapple beats bananas as my favorite fruit
I’m definitely a sweet breakfast person… Give me pancakes and syrup all day, every day. lol
Best thing I ate yesterday?? Probably a mango. I haven’t eaten one since my addiction during my junior year in college. I ate ONE the other day and have been eating them every day since. I cannot get enough (skin and all ;))
I hope you found your nut butters!!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Fsddfskkpg! I couldn’t find them ANYWHERE. Either they were all sold out, or Justin’s seriously needs to stop giving me false hopes π₯
Lauren
I would write to them and maybe they’ll ship you some for free! Explain how you’re from Canada, nut allergy, searched high and low, and you have a blog. You never know! π
Jordan @ The Blonde Vegan
Ahhh, so jealous of all of that fresh fruit!!! I go to Hawaii every summer and I miss it so much. Definitely craving a trip right now. And that HULA PIE? Ummm, jdfskhfsl YUM! Great post. Just lived through you a little bit. Glad you had a great trip π Xo, Jordan
Ashley @MilesonOats
I think it’s kinda amazing you and Jay got to enjoy a honeymoon-esq type vacation (minus the food poisoning) π Merp. I’ve always wanted to walk up to a farmers market on the island and just grab a fresh juicy mango and bite into it like I was born and raised on the islands. Weird? Sigh, I need to lay off watching Survivor. Even though a I am a seafood lover I would probably pass on the raw salmon too…gag. Something about raw fleshy ANYTHING is nast-tay. I hope you two soaked up each others love and got to enjoy quality time since he’s been away for awhile. You deserve it <3
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I actually think that passing on the raw salmon may have been what saved me from food poisoning — we have a sneaking suspicion that that’s what got to J π
Jenn@ Mark My Miles!
Those bananas are so cute! So sorry you guys got food poisoning. Glad you are feeling better.
Hilary
I love pineapples! They are probably my all time favorite fruits I could eat a whole one in a day flat without a doubt (may have already done this haha)
Right now I have been combining sweet and savory for breakfast! I like egg white omelets and then pairing that with a side of oats and raspberries! It’s the best of both worlds π
The best thing I ate yesterday was a nice spoonful of peanut butter! Nut butter is just the best!
That Flatbread looks like it was amazing! Not to mention how cute those little bananas are!
Jen @ Chase the Red Grape
Wow all that fruit! I would love it there! Just to have everything so fresh would be amazing – not many fruits grown in the UK – well apart from amazing summer strawberries and raspberries!! π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh girl I definitely feel you on that one. Not much grows here in Alberta either… We get some berries and apples, but otherwise most of our stuff has to get imported from pretty far away.
Nicole @ FruitnFitness
I love eating all the fresh fruits when I’m on vacation in tropical locations. The fresh fruit is always so, so much better! So sorry again about J’s food positioning but glad you were able to get in some good eats still.
Christine@ Apple of My Eye
Ahh food in Hawaii IS THE BEST. I love the asian fusion that they put in a lot of their dishes and the fresh fruit stands are fab! I don’t think it’s possible to eat a bad fruit in Hawaii and don’t even get me started on their pineapples.
Glad you’re back! <3
Danica @ It's Progression
I would go crazy over all of that fresh fruit!
My favorite tropical fruit is a banana.
Sweet breakfasts – almost always.
The best thing I ate yesterday was a quinoa snack bar thing (technical name) – I made a pan full last weekend and have nearly eaten the entire thing on my own. super good.
Davida @ The Healthy Maven
I ATE THAT EXACT SAME HULA PIE AT DUKE’S!!!!!!!!!!!! I have photographic evidence to prove it! Seriously to die-for.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Did you have a hard time finishing it too? I honestly wasn’t expecting the slice to be that big π
Dixya @ Food, Pleasure, and Health
you are making me very hungry!!
Miss Polkadot
Look at all that fruit! I’m definitely jealous because homegrown apples, strawberries and kabocha from my mum’s garden and carrots, parsnips and the likes from the Farmers’ Market are as far as my experiences go. No exotic produce that hasn’t seen the inside of a plane before appearing on my table yet. I’m clearly missing out and need to book a flight to Hawaii π . It’s hard to pick a favourite but right now I’d say mangoes are mine when it comes to exotic fruit.
The Hula Pie looks out of this world good and you better believe I looked up a recipe. Now that would be well worth overcoming my cake/pie fears for next year’s birthday …
Tatum | EATS From The Oil Patch Blog
Ahh those mini bananas are to die for! Hope you had an amazing time π
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles
I am so excited that you had a good time and that you are back! You must be so tired…I only want to go to Hawaii now btw, it’s been on my mind since last week and I found myself a race to run next year should I decide to go lol…Sweet breakfast all the way..
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Do it! I think there was a marathon when I was in Honolulu last year and it was perfection. Do it, do it, DO IT! π
Liz S.
Yes, please keep posting about your trip! It’s great to see beautiful weather and sights in your photos π
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
Those bananas are teeeeny tiny!! I would definitely have to eat 2 in one sitting! π
Heather @fitncookies
Welcome back! I remember taking a red eye home from Oregon (I’m in PA) last year and being so exhausted, yet couldn’t sleep when I got home! that has to be the worst feeling, so hopefully you catch up soon! I’m excited to hear all about Hawaii! Bring the posts on!
AC
Whatβs your favourite tropical fruit?
probably pineapple or mango
Sweet or savoury breakfasts?
I used to only eat sweet breakfasts, but now I’m on to savoury. When I’m out, I often order 2 poached eggs with bacon and toast, or huevos rancheros. At home, I like mushroom egg white omelets or sauteed mushrooms topped with a fried egg or two.
What was the best thing you ate yesterday?
I treated myself to a lemon poppyseed muffin as a morning snack yesterday and it was scrumptious π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m thinking that I need to start eating more savoury breakfasts. I never think that they’ll satisfy me, but I always end up liking them when all is said and done.
Laura @ FitMamaLove
Love Kauai! And hula pie! Looks like a yummy trip!
Marina @ Lazy for Diet
I think, I pass certain phases in my breakfast. Sometimes I will give everything to eat oat with honey and raisin. And I will sometimes prefer eggs with Chile sauce π Probably, even vegetable salad. Usually I adhere to one type of a breakfast while it won’t bother me. And when I cease to feel this shiver in a breakfast anticipation, I change its type… Or components π
I was glad to see you again in the blog. Though I don’t make comments much because of my bad English, I always read.
Erin @ The Almond Eater
Omg look at those bananas! So cute. Definitely jealous of all of your fresh fruit consumption–tropical vacations are the best for that very reason. Glad you had some good eats!
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables
Oh my goodness, so much delicious looking fresh fruit! I’m jealous! I can’t wait until more fresh fruit is in season π Glad you had fun!!
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
See, this is why you need to bring me on vacation with you. So that when you get raw salmon, I can eat it π And although I love my sweet breakfasts, I adore a good eggs benedict – that looks amazing!
Tropical fruit: I like guava, but I only eat it when I’m in Mexico…the ones here kind of suck. I also really like papaya, but same thing – I just need to go somewhere tropical!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Can you believe that I’ve never had guava before? I’ve had juice from it, but never the actual fruit. And I was SO tempted to buy a papaya when I was at the store today, but I was too scared that it was going to suck π
Alex @ therunwithin
well i bet the food there was beyond amazing, I can’t even imagine. That hula pie just says it enough!
Laura @ RunningJunkie
Macadamia nut ice cream??? That sounds AMAZING!!
I love fresh fruit! I have a couple of mangos ripening at home that I can’t wait to tear into. I’m sure the stuff in HI is MUCH better though.
Ms.J
Well you will get no complaints from me…since I haven’t done all that much travelling, Hawaii is on my list of dreams, so in the meantime I’ll enjoy living through you π . Eeee that banana <3
Ohmygoose, breakfast at Kukui's is quite an interesting morning dish *jaw hanging* hahaa. Now that Hula Pie is a beauty!
Krista @ Tiny n Fit
That pie looks divine! I love kiwis! Are those tropical? And I prefer sweet breakfasts!
Lauren-Kate
I love holiday updates! Can’t wait to read them π
That pineapple looks the size of my head – amazing! I also eat weird things on holiday – I ate BBQ’d Kangeroo Steak in Australia and really liked it… I felt so mean but it was good!
And I know how you feel re no sleep traveling. I thought it was a good idea to go straight back to work the day after traveling for a day and half straight. Needless to say I threw a sickie, not that they would have any idea why I was off… fail!
Brynn
Yum all of that fruit looks awesome! I cannot wait to read you Hawaii recaps. One week from today I’ll be on my way!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You’re going to adore it π But pack a rain jacket or umbrella if you’re visiting Kauai!
Kelly @ Kelly Runs For Food
Oh my gosh, that BBQ chicken flatbread looks awesome. I totally go all out on vacation, that’s the point! Can’t wait to see some more pics from your trip!
Natalie Staeckeler
I think I could probably eat my weight in fruits as well.. They’re just so delicious! To have that much a selection? I’d probably have to put a lock on my wallet. π
It’s always nice to step outside of our comfort zones. These eats look amazing girl!
Shashi @ http://runninsrilankan.com
Good golly wow – that Macadamia nut ice cream, chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and a chocolate cookie crust is X-rated food porn at its finest! I have a huge sweet tooth and that pie is making me rethink my self imposed lent restrictions on dessert after dinner! But, pie for breakfast is still an an option as I like ALL the sweets for breakfast!
I grew up in Sri Lanka, and fruit salads with pineapple, mangoes and papayas were an everyday, every meal staple – and to this day, those 3 hold a very special place in my heart – not to mention, they are good for it too π
Glad you are back lovely lady – looking forward to hearing about your trip in the next few posts!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
π That’s probably the most clever way to get around Lent restrictions that I’ve ever heard. And you know me — I totally support the idea of having pie for breakfast
Shannon
WOW, can I just say… HULA PIE? Yep, I’ll take 3 please π
And on vacations, any food combination goes!! So weird things are always accepted haha. Those bananas are ADORABLE too!
