Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!
1. Is there anything cozier than a warm coffee shop on a rainy day?
I’m currently writing this post from my favourite booth in Starbucks with a warm cup of Pike and the rain hitting the big window beside me. Creative bliss.
2. I’m also witnessing a little girl trying to pick out a baked treat from the oh-so-appealing bakery display. With all the amazing breads, cookies, and pastries to choose from, she went for the Marshmallow Dream Bar. But let’s face it… those crispy rice squares are amazing. No matter how many fancy desserts I’ve had, there’s something about the simplicity of Rice Krispie Squares that can’t be beat. I should really get around to making these Rice Krispie Energy Bites again…
3. Since we’re on the topic of sweet treats, let’s talk Easter candy. I just recently learned that Kinder Surprise eggs are banned in the States because the FDA deemed them too dangerous. Say whaaaaat? Apparently the toy inside is considered a potential choking hazard. I get it, but… really?!? They turn a blind eye to worse things while simultaneously robbing kids of fun. And I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone here choking on a Kinder toy. Just saying.
It’s a real shame, too, because Kinder chocolate is freaking tasty…
4. And now for a very important question… What’s your strategy to eating the Easter bunny?
Do you start from the ears? The tail? The nose? The toes? I take the random approach, and I tend to cycle through my starting points so that he never knows what to expect. This year? The toes…
5. Also… please don’t tell my dentist that I’ve been eating so much chocolate and Easter candy lately. I have an appointment coming up next Tuesday and I’m already having anxiety attacks. It’s only a routine check up and I’ve been cavity free for years now thanks to becoming totally anal about my oral health, but still — it’s still the dentist, and that chair is still the source of many cringe-worthy memories. Pray for me, friends. Pray for me.
6. On a happier note… new books!
I asked you guys for some book recommendations last week, and you definitely delivered. I picked these up earlier this week and I can’t wait to crack into them, but I’m having a hard time trying to figure out which one I should start with. Thoughts?
7. I’m also having a hard time trying to figure out which recipes I want to post first. I have a running list of about 20 recipe ideas that I want to share with you guys, and that list just keeps growing and growing because I usually only manage to fit in two recipes per week in between WIAW, ToL, and Link Love posts. I keep going back and forth on the idea of posting more/less recipes because I don’t want Spoons to become too distant and impersonal, but I still want to share good foods. Thoughts?
8. On that note, here’s what’s coming at ya tomorrow… Can we say cookies for breakfast? Yes, yes we can 😉

Eating 4 Balance
While rain puts a damper on basically every single other activity that one would want to do (ie. go outside!), it really does do something for creativity. I’m always inspired when it begins to rain. Or thunder. Or lightning. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that all turning points in movies happen during dramatic weather scenes? Something in our brain just turns on and says.. “Hey, it’s really stormy outside. It’s time to contemplate your existence and have deep meaningful conversations.” Ha.
hmmm. Yea, I’ve never heard of the chocolate egg you mentioned. I feel deprived of something special.
Graceling! While I never finished the first one (mainly because it’s 2 hours away at home and I keep on forgetting to bring it back to school with me) I loved it. Oh, and the Never Sky was supposed to be good too. The Ender’s Game movie was amazing, but my mom said the book dragged a little?
I’d take personal over recipes personally. Lol. Lots of persons/people in there 😉
Cassie
I just pinned your rice crispie bars… I need to pick up rice cereal ASAP!!!! Those look so good and they are one of my fave treats!
Kat
Under the never sky = BEST. SERIES. EVER. I adore those books. The 3rd one was just ehh, but 1 and 2 BLEW my mind. Roar is my favorite, and I think I want one of my own 😉
And Gracling is one Ive had my eye on, so Im looking forward to your thoughts on it!
My chocolate bunny is [sadly] already gone, and you know how I like to eat them 🙂
Conny
Hi,
maybe a stupid question, but how can I transfer the button of “thinking out loud” to my blog?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Just right click on the image, save it to your computer, and then upload it to your blog like you would any other picture 🙂
JenB
I saw your Kinder egg in a previous post and thought that was what it was … I have heard of them, but being here in the states, have not encountered them myself. Whew … cause they are dangerous! I’m not big on an entire chocolate bunny, I do love chocolate, but I prefer it in smaller pieces, preferably with peanut butter.
On your books … I really liked the “Under the Never Sky” series, and you are lucky, because the series is done, so you could read all three books back to back if you wanted (I had to wait a long while in-between). I liked Ender’s Game and Gracling, haven’t tried the others yet but they are on my list.
ellie @ fit for the soul
It’s so strange and cool to me that you eat Kinder chocolate! I mean, I grew up eating those evvveryyyday in Argentina! And I agree that it’s silly they’re banning the toys. They really should worry more about other safety issues with food, rather than just a toy. 🙁 And I miss rainy days! We’ve been having gorrrrgeous sunny+breezy weather in socal, but rain will always be my favorite. 😀
Ann
In my family we used to share all of our easter chocolate bunnies (and chocolate santa clauses for that matter). We smashed it brutally on a plate and broke it up into smaller pieces (preferably not too small though). Everyone loved the ears most because they are so thick and chocolatey! I always liked the face in general, because it just looks cute. Nowadays I don’t eat chocolate bunnies anymore. But if I would (and wouldn’t share) I would totally bite the head off first!!
Beth
Thought I’d share this! LOL

Amanda @ .running with spoons.
😆 😆 Oh that’s brilliant <3
LC
Hi! Although I have been reading your blog for a while and enjoying it, I’ve never commented before. However, when I saw that your stack of books had Ender’s Game in it, my heart skipped a beat (actually several). I love it that much! I can’t recommend that book enough!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks for saying hi, LC! I’ve heard so many good things about Ender’s Game, so I’m definitely looking forward to reading it.
Emma
I can’t believe Kinder Surprises are banned in the US! That boggles my mind.
As a long, long, LONG time reader I have to say that I like the way you have your posts scheduled now. I think if you posted more recipes it would make the blog seem a little distant. Keep as is! Maybe if you’re just bursting to share a recipe you could add it to a WIAW or something.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks for your input, Emma! Truth be told, I’m a fan of how things are now too, so they’ll probably stay that way 🙂
Becky@TheSavedRunner
I always love when bloggers share new recipes! And I don’t think it will make your blog too impersonal because you can always throw in bits and pieces of your life in a post that focuses on a recipe.
Jo @ Living Mint Green
I used to make homemade Luna bars all the time! I should start that again. That way I won’t spend $100 on protein larabars from Costco.
And no, there isn’t anything better than a cup of coffee on a rainy day – except for maybe laying in bed with a book and the windows open. AHHH
Cassie
Those rice crispies so good!!
Lyric
Oh my gosh your dish ware is adorable!! And wow I cannot believe they discontinued kinder in the US. I remember as a kid I used to get so excited when I found those giant ones and got to build a toy. And then eat the chocolate of course 😉
Mayra
Kinder eggs used to be my favourite!! I don’t know about other places, but here in Brazil yhey sell GIANT ones for Easter… and now that it has passed they are like 50% off price… My husband told me this morning he was having a huge craving for them, so maybe I’ll be the best wife ever and get him two 🙂
It’s currently raining here so I would love a good cup of coffee like yours!
And can’t wait for the breakfast cookie recipe!! Looks yummy!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
They have the super huge ones here too! I’ve always wondered what was in them, but I only got the one size up from the smallest this year. Maybe I’ll have to head to the store and score one for half price myself 😉
Carmy
You’ve got me craving for Kinder Surprise now!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries
LOL The FDA is beyond me. I don’t understand half the things they ban and pass…
Cookies for breakfast?! Yes PLEASE!
Karey @ Nutty About Health
The US is pretty jacked up on what they think is ok w/our food industry… we are SO lenient on so many horrible foods & products, then we don’t allow a little chocolate egg w/a toy?! Say what?! Yeah, no wonder we have some major health issues here…
I need a cozy coffee shop today… it’s rainy & dreary here, but I have to sit home & wait for maintenance to come fix/replace our hot water heater. Hoping I can take a nice long HOT shower soon! 😉
Brittany
What comes to mind…hmm..I wish I was with you in that booth (seriously a booth?! that’s legit..my store only has tables and chairs) with some coffee and the rain. It sounds wonderfully magical actually.
cait @pieceofcait
i really enjoy a rainy while at a coffee shop, nothing beats it! just like an awesome iced coffee on a sunny day.. to different feelings! 🙂 can’t wait for your recipes, and i love cooooookies for breakfast! 🙂
Lauren
You’re such a tease! I can’t wait for the recipe! You can always do personal stories in between your pictures of the recipe on a recipe post! 🙂
And I definitely eat the ears first because they are SUCH an eye soar. They just need to go… They hang out so far they’re almost asking to be eaten first.
And as far as the dentist goes… This teeth freak LOVES it. I own every whitening product known to man because I’m kind of OCD about my teeth, so knowing I come out of the dentist clean as a whistle… I look forward to it. Lol
Lauren @ LoveChocolateLife
I can even begin to tell you how upset I am when I see your kinder eggs and I cannot have any 🙁 wahhhhh. Also, I went to the dentist last week and had to get a filling RE FILLED. Couldn’t sleep the night before but really it wasn’t even bad !!!! They numbed my gum before they even put Novocaine in so I felt NOTHING Nothing !!!!!! it was glorious 🙂
Amy@Long Drive Journey
I’ve seen plenty of bloggers just hijack WIAW and post a recipe. It’s still the truth because that is what you ate, even if it’s not for every meal. I’ve never heard of kids choking on toys in Kinder eggs either, but that’s probably because they are banned! Haha. I’ve heard horror stories of kids choking on toys, so I have to go with the gov on that one! At least you aren’t in the U.S. and you can eat them!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I feel bad for hijacking linkups though… doesn’t seem fair. And I can’t honestly say that I’ve ever heard of anyone around here biting into a Kinder and choking on the candy — everyone knows to take it out first! Is that why they don’t put toys in cereal anymore?
Nichole
I cannot believe that about kinder eggs!! Those things are literally the best.. And the little surprise was just always something fun to look forward too… How sad:( that cookie for breakfast looks delicious can’t wait until tomorrow to see it! Happy Thursday!
Maria @ Pappa Don't Preach
I made traditional rice krispie treats for Easter and it’s amazing how delicious they always are!! And I have to say, the US is quite anal when it comes to anything child related, but these days I guess it’s a requirement. People can and will sue for anything! Such a bummer when it’s delicious chocolate thats involved!
Megan @ The Skinny-Life
I’ve been putting off so many of my appointments. I finally getting a haircut today. I think I had one in November but not sure. My hairs really long and I basically could go a year without cutting it. Problem is it is super thick so when I start to feel like I have a mop on my head it’s time. Dentist is next month. I can’t wait to see that recipe!
Ang @ Nutty for Life
Gotta eat the ears off the bunny first. Tap into the human aggression and just go for it. :p
I think I’ve had a Kinder egg like once in my life.. pretty sure we got them in Germany. They were fab.
I actually might have some book rec’s for you.. I emailed you last night so if you respond, tell me what kinds you usually like and I will tell you some I have in mind!
Paula
I’m not sure when we started the tradition, but my family always used to have kinder eggs at Christmas. We all rely heavily on friends with family overseas to smuggle them in. I actually looked it up, and there’s a law from 1938 that bans the sale of candy containing “non-nutritive objects” (ie it ain’t food). This seems a little odd given that everyone was okay with toys in boxes of cereal when I was a kid (do they still do that?). I have a sneaking suspicion that Hershey’s just doesn’t want us eating vastly superior Italian chocolate…
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I was thinking about that a little while ago, and I don’t think they put toys in cereal boxes anymore. Sad! I remember buying cereal for the sole purpose of getting the toy, and they were always buried on the bottom so I’d end up digging around until I found it and spilling most of the cereal in the process 😆
Hilary
Cookies for breakfast! That is now what is on my mind 🙂
Erin @ The Almond Eater
Good luck at the dentist! I’ve never had a cavity either but every time before I go I try to floss as best I can because I KNOW the dentist will tell me I need to floss more. Every. Single. Time. Maybe I should start listening?
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat
Ugh! I hate the dentist! I don’t know what it is about going there, but it always gives me anxiety too! Good luck on Tuesday!
As for where I start munching on my chocolate Easter bunny, I always tend to go for the ears. It just seems like the best place to start.
Can’t wait for your recipe tomorrow!
Chelsea @ A Fit LittleOne
Oh agreed!! There is nothing better than a warm cup of coffee on a rainy day!! All winter long I was craving coffee haha Thankful our winter was only about a couple of weeks long, so my wallet stayed intact. And yum!!! That rice crispy looks good! Although I had one of Starbuck’s once, and it wasn’t very good (in my opinion).
Susie @ Suzlyfe
Love all of the comfort that you are talking about this week–chocolate, coffee, marshmallow bars, books, rainy days…. makes me wanna curl up. I lazed in bed this morning and it was GLLLLLOOOORRRIIIOOOUUUSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
Camille @ Challenge Mantra
Chocolate Easter Bunnies intimidate me! I think I usually start with the ears, and then I reach a critical point where I have to break it all apart rather than look at the bunny I’m eating. Hollow bunnies is where it’s at for me 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I love the hollow bunnies! I always seem to get the solid ones though 😥 At least Kinder eggs are hollow 😀
Kim @ FITsique
I have never had a Kinder Egg because I’m in the states and they robbed me of an appropriate childhood!! 😉 What the heck, they let kids eat McDonalds but not a Chocolate egg with a toy? SMH. I always eat the poor bunnies ears first. He never has a chance.
Kim@hungryhealthygirl
I’m all for cookies for breakfast!! After seeing that first pic….I want it to be raining and I want to go sit in a Starbucks ASAP.
