1. Happy Thanksgiving to all my wonderful American readers! I really wish that Canadian and American Thanksgiving lined up so that I didn’t have to get jealous when I see all of the delicious food littering the blog world. I almost thought about celebrating along with you guys, but roasting an entire turkey by myself is still a bit daunting – that’s what mom’s are for.
2. Speaking of cooking birds, you know what I miss the most about being a vegetarian? Not having to work with raw meat. I’ll spare you the gory pictures, but let’s just say that cooking chicken doesn’t exactly top my list of favorite activities. Aside from being paranoid about poisoning myself, the whole process just skeeves me out.
3. Why, oh why is Canada so behind on the times when it comes to stocking fun food? I see so many things around the blog world that I’ll never find up here, and one thing in particular has been driving me kind of crazy lately. Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride tea. I’ve found most of the other Celestial Seasonings holiday teas, but that one continues to evade me. If anyone wants to send me some, I would love you forever.
4. At least we have apples. I’ve been going through a ridiculous number of apples lately, mostly in the form of homemade applesauce. I made some on Sunday night using 10 apples, and I already need to make some more…
5. The fact that Hostess recently decided to close its doors is causing me a bit of grief. Why? Because I’ve never had a Twinkie. I know that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but hear me out. Twinkies seem like one of iconic foods that everyone has to have at least once in their life, and now that they’re going extinct, I may remain a Twinkie virgin for the rest of my life if I don’t act soon. Talk about pressure.
6. I was sitting in Starbucks the other day and there were 3 people at the table next to me who were all tinkering with their phones. They weren’t talking to each other, just sitting and clicking away. It actually made me a little sad to see. At this rate, face-to-face human interaction is soon going to become a thing of the past…
7. I don’t like warm food. Even on the rare occasion that I actually make something that requires cooking (as opposed to cereal, sandwiches, wraps, and waffles), I always wait for it to cool to room temperature before eating it. For some reason, things just taste better that way. I can still handle warm, but hot? Nasty.
8. Another thing I don’t enjoy? Washing my hair – it’s a time consuming ordeal. I mean, washing it is no big deal, but drying, styling, babying, pampering, etc.? Too much like work. Thank goodness for dry shampoo is all I can say… And I know this girl and my favorite sherpa can relate 😉
9. Big news! I baked made something in the kitchen!
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Protein Balls
10. Okay, so that doesn’t really count… but I’m working on it! It’s been almost a month since my last baking endeavor, and I’ve really been craving some homemade goodies so I’ll probably spend a good portion of tonight browsing recipes or trying to come up with one of my own. Any requests or suggestions are welcome!
. – . – . – .
Do you prefer eating your food hot or cold?
Have you ever had a Twinkie?
How often do you wash your hair?
Katy
I prefer my food HOT! Like, piping hot. That’s why I can’t eat soup because it’s…scolding…
We don’t have Twinkies here in NZ…and thank goodness coz they look a bit nasty…you can get them in some shops but they just look so yuck that I would rather stay away from them 😛
Ever since I discovered Bastiste dry shampoo I have gone from washing my hair every 3 days to…once a week :\ Don’t judge!!
xxx
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
No judgment here! I’ve managed to make hair-washing a twice a week affair, but once sounds perfect 😉
Irina @ Chocolatea Time
Not gonna lie…the sugar cookie tea is quite delicious :/ Maybe you can order it online off of Amazon or Ebay? It’s worth it! And I can’t believe you don’t like hot food! I actually can’t stand when my food is luke-warm (like warm soup – gag!) when it should be boiling hot. Same goes for my tea – it must be scalding hot! I hope you get your hands on some Twinkies and/or other Hostess products. They are quite nasty but definitely iconic.
Jill
You make me smile…which is a feat since I’m currently in the most stressful time of my life…well, one of them anyone 🙁
I want to embrace more openess with food but my guts are so torn apart that I think I need a “start over” but don’t know how. I wish I could get some control over things. I need to. I just…
i just don’t know. Dunno.
I need to be better. I need to.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m glad I could make you smile – that’s a start 🙂 Smiling and trying to keep a positive attitude are some of the most important things when it comes to getting through the hard times.
Jill
But it can be so hard to be positive when things are….well…
I’m really in a stressful spot now with a decision I must make that involves possibly moving..job stuff, etc..gosh I’m so flustered and lost and can’t focus on it. And I need to make the decision as of like…yesterday. Oops. You seem very intelligent and grounded in your financial, living work things and on a good path. If you think you wouldn’t mind listening to me bounce some stuff of ya, let me know. I need a another unbiased, intelligent perspective. Ohh the stuff in my head and heart.
kaity @ kaityscooking
that tea is the best ! i cant wait til you get it by you ull love it, and i like my food warm not to hot though otherwise its just not enjoyable to me.. and i loveeeeeeeee dry shampoo, and sometimes just use alittle powder works great but i too cant stand doing my hair its to time consuming lol
kris
love dry shampoo. i think it’s one of the best inventions every 🙂
My mom used to give my brother and i twinkies for breakfast when we were young. Probably not the most nutritious thing, but i think she had resorted to giving me anything that I would eat because i absolutely HATED breakfast and wouldn’t eat anything. {which btw is rather ironic since it’s now my favorite meal. haha). I think it’s pretty much ok to pass on it though since it’s slightly creepy how long they can last without expiring. But if you’re still looking to try them/can’t find them, heres a recipe to make them at home! 🙂
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/07/dining/homemade-twinkies-recipe.html
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Sounds kind of like my mom. At one point she had no problem feeding me PopTarts for breakfast because I didn’t want to eat anything else.
Brittany
I used to LOVEEEEEE Twinkies, thought I haven’t had on in years! I highly suggest you get at least one before they are gone forever. They are full of SHIT, but definitely iconic. GO NOW! I love the look of your kitchen creation, those balls look gooooood ;).
I neeeed to try dry shampoo, because I hateee washing my hair. HA!
Molly@This Life Is Sparkling
I like my food to be hot! And I don’t think I’ve ever had a Twinkie. But I’m pretty much okay with that 😉
Lisa
I want that sugar cookie tea too! It’s so annoying how they don’t sell it in Canada. Not a fan of that fact! I’ve never had a twinkie either! I know there will still be tons left on store shelves, since you know they last 7 years before they expire ha ha. So, I think you can still have your chance:) I don’t like really hot food either, warm food is the best though! I don’t like really cold food either, I’m odd. I don’t like washing my hair because I have SO much of it, and my hair dresser told me to wash it every 3-4 days anyways, so I listen to his advice:) But, yah dry shampoo is a winner!
Anna @AnnaTheApple
Oh I hear you about the hair washing. My hair takes so long. Usually at the weekend I just can’t be bothered and wash it and put in plaits to keep it out of my way. Yeah I’ve heard about this tea too and really want to try it but just can’t justify the air fare costs!
Laura Agar Wilson (@lauraagarwilson)
I have to say that tea is so worth ordering in from iHerb, I’m actually drinking some right now, heaven!
Alexis
okay twinkies have a lot of hype but I would totally send you a hostess goodie package with all the things I used to eat as a child. I actually almost bought one today just because I didn’t want to see them go. I’ve seen that tea on blogs too! I can’t find it in stores around me but if I come across it I could throw that in the twinkie package too 😉
I wash my hair every other day! It depends on how oily it is though. But I agree I love the feeling of washing my hair!
and yes I’m completely serious about the twinkie thing. Stores are trying to get rid of them so they’re like dirt cheap right now!
Liz (formerly VeggieGirl)
You need to have a Twinkie before you die – don’t listen to the VeggieGirl person above me 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha! Noted. And I’m on the lookout for some!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
I totally know what you mean about the temperature of food. The perfect example: soup. I cannot stand when my soup is so hot that I can hardly taste any of the flavors. It tastes so much better after it has cooled down a bit.
I have had a Twinkie, but not for YEARS….and trust me, you aren’t missing much! 😉
Shannon
That tea is one of my favorites!!! I am so sad for Hostess. They were iconic and I will be sad that I can’t buy my kids a treat of a hostess cupcake
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
I’m not a fan of raw meat either! Thankfully I didn’t have to touch it haha ;D I have yet to find that tea anywhere. I NEED it!
Hollie
Love this. I wash my hair every other day (real talk). I prefer hot food but mostly because I prefer hot coffee. LOL, I don’t enjoy burning my tongue on anything else.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin
I’m so jealous of everyone who got to enjoy Thanksgiving yesterday too! But I kind of like having our Canadian Thanksgiving so early because it means I can start getting in the Christmas spirit in November haha.
Also I have that sugar cookie tea because my friend brought me back some when she visited the US, but it’s actually not all that it’s cracked up to be. I prefer the Candy Cane Lane tea!
I’ve never had a Twinkie either. My parents refused to buy them when I was a kid. 😛
Laura
First things first….Twinkies are not good. HOWEVER, I encourage you to try one…even I have been searching for them simply because they won’t be around much longer.
Secondly, I still deal with this a little but I’ve realized that my distaste for hot food isn’t actually a matter of taste, but it stems from my ED. Hot food makes you feel full in a completely different way, and that used to terrify me. I’ve gotten so used to eating leftovers without heating them up that sometimes I forget other people see that as weird. I’m trying to have the patience to let things heat up, and the courage to feel that satisfied fullness that comes along with hot food. I’m not saying this has anything to do with you, just a personal problem I’ve had!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Wow I really had no idea about hot food doing that. It’s been so long since I had hot food that I don’t even remember if it makes a difference in my satiety. Might have to try it out and see for myself!
Briana
So interesting about the hot food. I STILL do not like hot food because of how it makes my tummy feel. So weird…
Danielle @ Clean Food Creative Fitness
Love this post. I am the dry shampoo queen! I hate washing my hair too. Those chocolate chip protein balls look amazing! Great choice of what to make. I’ve had a twinkie and am so surprised they’re going out of business. I haven’t had one in forever but from what I remember they were good!
lindsay
i love cold leftovers but i don’t like cold dinner. In fact, i almost reheat it till it’s pipping hot. But after that, i never reheat and prefer cold everything. Am i weird? Of course!
and i tried to find a twinkie for you. Went to 3 stores, sold out. bugger.
lindsay
p.s I hate washing my hair. I use dry shampoo almost every day. Wash it maybe 2x a week. LOL!
Kate
aaah the sugar cookie sleigh ride tea is my FAVORITE! There’s only one store in my hometown that stocks them (yep, my mom and I went on wednesday and I bought, um….six boxes…) but I haven’t found it in Colorado yet. I’d totallly send you some! Twinkies on the other hand….not worth it. I haven’t had one in a few years, but they’re one of those things that LOOK delicious but they’re actually disappointing. dry and not enough cream….you’re better off eating a Cannolli haha.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha I don’t think I’d expect to be wowed by a Twinkie; it’s more about being able to say I tried one of the most iconic foods more than anything else. And thank you for making me think of Cannolli 😛
Jessica
You should try living in the UK re number 3. We are about two decades behind Canada, never mind the US! 😉 Actually, I’m being a little unfair things are definitely moving in the right direction but you really have to live in London to get hold of anything exciting.
Twinkies just look awful, to be honest. I’ve seen them crop up more in specialist sweet shops over here but have no impetus to try them at all. They just look so dry and fake.
I wash may hair most days because it tends to veer towards the greasier side of life and whilst it looks okay on the second day, I hate the feel. Also, I don’t straighten or curl and use lots of treatment oils for when I blow dry. I also have short hair so I think it’s a lot (read A LOT) less of a chore for me than ladies with longer, thicker hair. It must take and age to wash and dry that I can totally see why one would hate doing it!
Sara @ Nourish and Flourish
The next time I see Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride Tea in the store, I’ll buy an extra box or two and ship it to you! I’ve had a hard time finding it recently too, though. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and say a prayer to the tea gods. 😉 However, I’m not so sure I feel TOO sorry for you. Canada is blessed with David’s Tea! I’d trade Celestial Seasonings for David’s any day. 😉
Don’t fear eternal Twinkie virgin-hood! They’re really not worth the hype, I promise. The flavor is artificial, and the “cream” is far from cream consistency. Hostess cupcakes, on the other hand, might be worth seeking out. There’s something about the chocolate icing with a white swirl that captured my allegiance at a young age. It’s been years since I’ve had one, but I’m beginning to think I better buy a two-pack before they’re all gone!
I wash my hair every other day, but I’ve never used dry shampoo! I read Khushboo’s post the other day, and now this one…Am I missing out on something truly amazing?
Happy Friday! <3 xoxo
Laura
I’ll get some for you is Sara can’t!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh I don’t think I’d ever be willing to give up David’s Tea, but it’s all about seeing something you can’t have and wanting that 😆 As for dry shampoo, it’s AMAZING for days where you’re too busy/lazy to wash your hair. If you see your hair looking a little greasy, all you have to do is spray some dry shampoo through it and it clears the grease right up. Also adds a little bit of texture to the hair… So yeah, I’m a BIG fan.
And I might just have to take you up on the Sugar Cookie tea…
Lucie
Oh you don’t want to know how behind Switzerland is. Middle Ages!! I even need to go over the border to get oatmeal or order it online. I feel like a little kid discovering a whole new world when I see all the stuff you guys have over there. I’d love to get your recipe for apple sauce!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s actually not really a recipe at all! I just peel the apples, slice them really thin, throw them in a huge pot, turn the heat to medium-low, cover, and let them cook until they reach the softness that I want. Then I add a tonne of cinnamon and a spoonful of vanilla extract and call it done.
Ksenija @ Health Ninja
Homemade applesauce? I know exactly what you are talking about. Just bought 2kg of apples this week and made jars of chunky apple sauce. 1/3 of it is already gone… and don’t ask me where 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Don’t need to ask where because I already know… The same place that mine disappears to
Khushboo
Haha I resorted to Batiste this morning and thought of you as I was brushing away the white stuff- what a time-saver, eh! Like you I’ve never had a Twinkie, and now probably never will! I actually just Googled it and apparently it’s “Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling”–> er that description alone makes me sad that Hostess is going bust! And finally apples are the only fruit I’ve been eating lately too, mainly in applesauce! I am addicted to the stuff mixed with plain yogurt, almonds & honey…I finish a bowl and already look forward to the next ;)!
Jessie
How funny, I was just telling Joshua two nights ago how I’m just not a big fan of hot food & that i’d much wrap only eat cold food for the rest of my life. He looked at me like I was the strangest person in the world. ah, so glad to know you are exactly the same!!
I also hate doing my hair. My hair is so long & thick that it takes a ridiculous amount of time & yes I may have time.. but I’d much rather do something else… you know like read your blog & comment daily 🙂
Chelsie @ Balance, Not Scale
Umm. #twinning yet again!! Totally the same with my food temp. I don’t know why either … totally guilty of making something a little too hot in the microwave and then needing to stick it in the freezer for 5min to cool it off …
I also thought THE EXACT same thing when I heard about Hostess!! First thing that came to mind: But I can’t die without ever having tried a Twinkie!! That would be like dying without ever having tried a New York pretzel, or a Cosmopolitan, or eating the red Smarties last (if only once) …
I wash my hair 5-6 times a week (every time I workout). But no fluff ‘n stuff after — air dry and no styling for me!! Thank you for pin straight hair. 😉
And the alone time? Take it!! Take a nap for goodness sake. Or do some more no-bake baking. Time for YOUUUU!!! And we could plan our girlie date! Skype while doing our nails or something lame like that! 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Skype while doing nails and eating a Twinkie. Deal! 😉
Olivia @ Life As Liv
It all depends on my mood. Sometimes, all I’m craving is a big hot bowl of pumpkin oatmeal and other times I’m craving cold overnight oats. It varies.
I think I had a twinkie once. It wasn’t worth it. Give me chocolate over a twinkie any day.
I unfortunately have to wash my hair daily or look like a greased down boy. It’s not cute. I’m jealous you can get away with just time dry shampoo!
sarah
We don’t even get to celebrate Thanksgiving at all over here in the UK, hurumph!
I totally agree with your numbah’s 7 & 8. I’m not sure how I feel about that Batiste dry shampoo though, when I used it it turned my hair grey & dusty…not exactly the look I was going for.
Oh, you should totally make Lisa Lately’s pumpkin fudge- I’d put it in the same category as your cookie balls, in them being utterly delectable, moreish nibbles of joy:). The combination of almond butter & coconut oil in the fudge is a goodie, I finished my batch embarrassingly FAST & can’t wait to make it again.
Xxx
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ll definitely look into the pumpkin fudge. I’m actually clean out of pumpkin though, so some shopping might need to happen beforehand. And have you come across a dry shampoo that doesn’t turn your hair gray and dusty? I have that problem with Batiste sometimes, but it’s the best one out of all the ones I’ve tried.
Ashley @ AlmostVegGirlie
I hate hot food too! Mostly because I always burn my tongue on it, but I just can’t taste it as well when it’s super hot. Cold food, on the other hand, is delicious! Especially frozen fruit.
That sucks that you guys have so much less food in Canada then we have here in the U.S. The sugar cookie sleigh ride tea is pretty epically delicious, but if you ever see the candy cane lane one try that because I love that kind even more. But one thing I wish we had here is DavidsTea. The flavors all sound amazing and I know there’s a few stores in the northeastern U.S. but none in my area…boo!
Angela
Omg it drives me crazy when I see that in the U.S., they have so many more Celestial Seasonings available! But recently I dried the gingerbread flavor, have you tried it? It takes amazing! What’s your favourite one? (Out of the measly range of Celestial teas actually available in Canada, that is -_-)
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I love Gingerbread Spice! I actually stock up on it so that it lasts me throughout the year 😆 I think I have around 5 boxes sitting in my cupboards right now…
Cait the Arty Runnerchick
thanks for the happy turkey wishes to us USA’ers and i’ll give u canadians a little double-dipping and return the warm wishes. 🙂
i was sooo sad about hostess biting the dust too, and not because i regularly eat twinkies and their goods, but like u said, they are pretty much iconic of childhood. and i admit, every time i passed a twinkie, ding-dong and SnoBall i was taken back to my little 6 year old self when they were about as close to heaven as u could get! i’m sorry u never got to try one, but in all honesty ur body is prolly better off…lol. 😉 i had a teacher back in 6th grade who kept a twinkie on his window sill for over 7 years (and after i graduated he kept it there) and it looked the SAME. 😛
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha! I’ve always wondered if Twinkies ever age. I think I’m going to try looking for some and then keep them in mint condition – maybe they’ll become a collector’s item one day 😉
Devon @ Health in Equilibrium
I’ve never had a twinkie either!! I wish I lived in Alberta so we could lose our twinkie virginities together… that didn’t sound quite right, cancel that. Also, I keep drooling over your homemade apple sauce and I really need to make it. I love chunky apple sauce, the store-bought stuff just isn’t near as good. Totally get you on the raw meat thing, it’s one of the reasons I don’t eat most meat. Gristle, bones, blood, veins, blegh!
Natasha
I’ve had a twinkie once many moons ago, LOL, and it was shitty. They just aren’t that great!
I think it depends on my mood, but sometimes I just don’t want hot food at all, so I get where you are coming from!
I hope you have an awesome day 🙂
Carinne
Ya know I’ve never really thought about the temp I eat most of my food but now that I do I usually eat things room temp. Too hot or too cold actually hurt my teeth….they are pretty sensitive to temperature.
And I have had a few twinkles….not for a long time but I feel I should eat a few more before they completely disappear.
Washing my hair is not something I do often….usually twice a week. I recently found dry shampoo and I LOVE it!
Oh one more thing….the holiday teas are my favorite! I actually buy tons of the sugar cookie one so I would be happy to part with one 🙂 it would be my pleasure to share with you if all I had to do was ship it to you.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
I have had Twinkies, but I feel like I have to inform you that Joe Louis are much, much better!
And the lack of good grocery stuff in Canada MIGHT explain why I look forward to grocery shopping more than anything else when I got over the border. Even if I can only make it to a Walmart, I go nuts with groceries I can’t find here.
I wash my hair daily (thinnest hair ever over here, if I skip a day it gets super greasy) but in terms of actually styling it? Heavens no…I run a brush through it and consider it good enough. 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha! Hitting up a grocery store for some good eats is seriously the first thing on my list after getting off the plane. I’ll be in the States in like 3 weeks, and the things I’m most looking forward to seeing at Whole Foods, TJ’s, and Chipotle 😆
Caitlin
Mmmm I prefer my food any temperature…as long as it’s tasty! I’ve had many a twinkie when I was younger…you aren’t missing much, honestly, but it wouldn’t hurt you to try one 😉 I wash my hair almost every other day…grease ball if I don’t…and if you email me your address I’ll send some sugar cookie tea 😉
Jess
I never really thought about food temperature preference… I mean, if we’re talking dinner, I have no clue what I would eat that is cold besides salad, to be honest lol. And for lunch, I typically do a wrap or sandwich, so that’s always cold…. Hmm, never thought about it haha.
And yes, I love Twinkies! They used to kinda gross me out because I was all about cholcolatey stuff, but they aren’t bad really.
And I have longer hair than you but I honestly only wash it twice a week MAX. I don’t even use dry shampoo. It’s just gotten accustomed to the routine and so it doesn’t get so oily I guess. But I know people who can’t go a day without washing their hair because it’s already gross by the end of the day — but I always tell them to wait it out because I KNOW their hair could get used to a different washing schedule! I hate how long it takes to dry and style, as well 😉
Oh, and I never cook my own chicken — that’s what rotisserie chickens in the grocery store are for 🙂
Miss Polkadot
At least you’re able to get some of Celestial Seasoning’s holiday flavours? Let’s just say the situation is far worse in Germany: None of them. Not fair, Celestial Seasonings, not fair at all.
It truly is sad to notice how much smartphones get in between actual conversations. Why don’t people realize how crazy “talking” to people via messages on their phones is when they have the chance of face-to-face interaction?
Go get yourself a Twinkie and eat one for me, too, girl! That’s another food Germany’s devoid of.
Speaking of baked goods I finally tried your Fig and Date Oatmeal bars and I’m glad I did. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the right pan size so the oatmeal botton got very fragile but it was tasty nonetheless. It was my first time using coconut oil and I was a little scared but the taste was well worth it. Amazing how such a small amount can deliver great buttery flavour. I’ll take some when heading to my parents’ house tomorrow an am curious how they will like them. Thanks for the recipe!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Well I suppose you could always order tea and Twinkies online if you really wanted, but I know that can be a bit of a pain. And that’s so awesome that you tried the figgy bars 😀 I used to be pretty scared of coconut oil too, but I’ve been using it forever now with no ill effects. Plus, it’s seriously seems like it’s becoming the new fad health food… coconut is everywhere these days.
