Woop! It’s Thursday ๐
1.ย I spy with my little eye… leaves that are no longer green.
Is anyone else getting all jazzed up for fall? Because I can.not.wait. Maybe it’s theย change that I’m looking forward to the most, but this is definitely my favourite time of the year, and I can’t wait to take in all of the sights, smells, flavours, and fashion that the season has to offer. Fall is just so peaceful and cozy. Love it.
2.ย While we’re on the topic of peaceful and cozy, here’s a confession for you… Sometimes I really crave cooler, darker, gloomier days because it doesn’t make me feel so bad for just wanting to stay in and veg out in my PJs with a good book or movie. As nice as summer is, it’s a bit too… energetic (??)… for my tastes. There are times where I don’t feel like doing anything, and it’s hard to indulge in nothingness when the sun is shining and the weather is gorgeous – just feels like a waste. That’s probablyย another reason I love fall so much – it’s perfectly acceptable to stay in ๐
3.ย I may as well use this opportunity to get something else off my chest… Sometimes I wear headphones without actually listening to any music – I just use them to deter anyone from talking to me. Gah! That probably makes me sound like a horrible person – I swear I’m not [that] antisocial ๐ฏ
4.ย I am, however, not a fan of the ever popular oats in a jar. After posting a picture of the empty AB jar that gave its life so that I could make my almond fudge bars, I got a lot of suggestions to make OIAJ. I’m sorry, butย nay. Call me crazy, but there’s just something about having to dig my breakfast out of a deep jar that feels too much like work. I like it all in the open so I can spread my toppings out…
5.ย Eating healthy is dangerous. I made some homemade applesauce yesterday and ended up slicing off the entire tip of my nail and burning the roof of my mouth in the process. So very worth it, though…
6.ย Sometimes I get hit with a completely random urge to say stupid things like “gadzooks” and “egads.” And I’m kind of shocked that spellcheck didn’t flag me for either of those. They’re actually legit words? Gadzooks! You learn something new every day ๐ฏ
7.ย I’ve really fallen in love with the farmers market over the past couple of weeks. I went through a rebellious phase after my ED where I wanted absolutely nothing to do with healthy eating of any sort, but I think I’m finally starting to get over that now, and veggies are making their way back into my good graces… especially the ones from the local market. Gah! Those suckers are good.
Cocktail tomatoes // Baby cucumbers
Nectarines // Sweet carrots
Broccoli // Flavoured Honey Sticks (watermelon, caramel, chocolate)
8.ย Eenie, meenie, miney…. mo.
[youtube=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4O_1MdWVo4&w=560&h=315″]
There’s a hard life for every silver spoon,
There’s a touch of grey for every shade of blue.
That’s the way that I see life.
If there was nothing wrong,ย
Then there’d be nothing right.
9. I was going through some old things that I left at my parents’ place when I moved out and came across a few stacks of binders full of all my old notes from school. I honestly have no idea what to do with them… They take up a lot of space and aren’t really useful at this point, but… all that work! It kind of feels like a waste to toss them all out; and they’re so neat and organized. Gah! Torn…
10.ย And because a random thoughts post wouldn’t be complete without random facts…
1. I wonder if it’s good sprinkled over yogurt…
2. Huh. That really is a shame… What about a leg?
3. But illegal in all the other 49 States?
4. … which is probably exactly what she wanted. Can we please stop talking about it?
5. Yowza. I guess I should probably start by reading the English version first, eh?
Happy Thursday, friends!
. – . – . – .
What do you do with your old school notes?
Anyone else out there not read any of the Harry Potter books?
Any confessions you need to get off your chest? ๐
lisa
I love fresh apple juice bought from the farmers market stands. Last year I got my hands on a juicer (thanks Dad!) and ever since then Iโve been livin la vida juicing! When we went apple picking last year I spent hours making cider over the stove, simmering it and adding spices, and yes it was delicious โ but it was a long process.
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
I am not at all ready for fall and until I start getting fall foods in my CSA share, I refuse to embrace it. I do know what you mean about PJ days in the summer time though. It’s hard to stay curled up inside when the sun is shining, but so totally necessary at times too.
I’ve never eaten oats in a jar. I’m not a huge fan of oatmeal period. Sorry, it’s true. I do bake my oats though and usually eat them in the form of granola. Does that make up for it?
I like the headphones idea. It does not make you antisocial; it might make you an introvert and there’s nothing wrong with that. Speaking from experience, of course. ๐
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I -guess- I can forgive you for your dislike of oatmeal, but that’s only because you love the #publicbanana ๐
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli
Oh man, I LOVE oats in a jar! But I will say that I prefer overnight oats over cooked oats since I feel that the nut butter get’s “lost” once it’s melted into the warm ones. And it is absolutely IMPERATIVE that you have a long tea spoon to eat them with so you don’t have to basically force your hand into the jar to scrape those last bits off the bottom!
I used to keep all my old school notes too, but one day I realized that they benefitted me in no way…I’d take one look at them and not have a clue as to what it was I had written. They were all neatly organized and legible, but when you’re out of that element for so long, things just don’t make the same amount of sense…know what I mean? The binders went to good use for recipe collections and light bounce boards (wrapped in aluminum foil, it makes the perfect food photography aide!) and the contents went to the recycling center!
If you think you’re bad, how about I’ve never read the books or even WATCHED the Harry Potter movies! ๐ฏ I kept saying I would watch the movies after I read the entire series, but I have yet to do it! And I totally do that with the headphones when I go for my walks at the park…I want to enjoy the sounds of nature, I do NOT want to get chatty with anyone! Lol
Love Shinedown! I haven’t heard that song, but those lyrics you posted are perfect! Can’t wait to have a listen!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Ohhh that kind of sounds like a perfect use for those old binders! I may have to pick your head about making at-home photography aids… especially now that winter is coming and we’ll be dealing with darkness at all the best meal times!
And I’ve never seen any of the movies either ๐ At this point, I almost just want to be stubborn and stick to my guns because I feel like I’ve stuck it out for this long, so I may as well go all the way ๐
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables
OIAJ: yay!
I have never read the Harry Potter books.. I want to though. ๐
I love gloomy days where I can just stay inside! However, I’m SO not ready for fall!
Gina @ Health, Love, and Chocolate
Gasp I had no idea you don’t like oats in a jar! I think I like them so much because the eating struggle makes breakfast last that much longer ;-). I am pretty sure I overdosed on nut butter though, so I have been having a strange aversion to it and haven’t had any empty jars lately.
Shannon
I am with ya in OIAJ.. I prefer cute little bowls. I’m a mixer, I need the space to stir up all the stuff I add to my oats! As for being excited for Autumn. I’m with ya! It actually feels autumn-ish out today and I was almost giddy.
Laura
I don’t do oats in a jar, but I definitely do yogurt in a jar! Even for a snack, just some Greek yogurt in an (almost empty but not really) but butter jar. Good. Stuff.
I love that you wear headphones when there is no music playing too! I do this at work a lot, but also when I’m at a coffee shop and just want to relax and either get some work done or just read/blog/WHATEVER. Most of the time I actually WISH I had music, but my IPODs battery life is basically non-existent so most of the time there’s no music for this girl. AND no annoying strangers ๐
Albizia
I’m a summer girl. I never wanted summer to end until I moved to hell on earth, a.k.a. Japan. Summers are ridiculously hot in most parts of the country and this year we had some record-breaking heat… Nothing can make 40-degree days and 30-degree nights pleasant. Nothing. It’s already started to become a little better but I can’t wait for the day when I’ll be able to go out in the middle of the day and not sweat at places I didn’t even know had sweat glands (Well, as a biologist it will be a lie if I say I really didn’t know but you get the point.). There’s one more reason why I can’t wait but that’s another story ๐
School notes… I have way too many of them, as well as other random stuff I thought was really valuable when I was a kid. I’ve promised myself to throw them all away when I graduate and move on to my new life. Even my future kids can’t use these because the educational system will have changed a million times until they start going to school (most likely not even in the same country). Just throw them away when you feel you need a change. It’s really liberating.
Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome
I too crave dark gloomy days so I feel less guilty about staying in my pj’s lounging all day. But only every once in a while. The weeks where we have endless rain during the winter start to get to me a little. Especially with a toddler! I’m not a huge fan of OIAJ for the same reasons as you. I don’t eat enough oatmeal to fill up the jar and I feel like it’s a mess digging them out. I do like nut butter on my oats though!
Emily
LOL! I’m sooo glad I’m not the only one that wears headphones without listening to music. I mainly do it when I’m working/hanging out at coffee shops (namely Starbucks). I love meeting new people but sometimes I just want to zone out and do my own thing without people starting a conversation.
I’m so happy that you’ve been loving fresh fruits and veggies lately- I’m right there with you. I definitely went through an anti-healthy food phase for a while (I think it’s a big part of getting past our food issues) but I’m back to loving them and it feels SO good.
PS: I may be the only blogger who’s never made OIAJ. Oops…
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The worst thing is when you have headphones in and people STILL talk to you. Like… what? And my favourite? When you’re actually listening to music so you can’t hear the first part of what they said and have to say “What?!” Grr.
Oh, and I’ve never actually made them either… I just assume I won’t like them ๐
Alyssa
I know exactly what you mean about wanting to stay in and veg out but feel kind of guilty when its so sunny and warm out! “Too energetic” is such a perfect way to describe it sometimes! I didn’t know anyone felt the same way! During the summer I feel obligated to be outside doing stuff so I am looking forward to fall when its perfectly acceptable to stay in and keep cozy all day!
Ashley @ AlmostVegGirlie
I know everyone is obsessed with fall and while I do like it, summer will always be my favorite season and I’m sad to leave it behind. Fall is really nice but it’s always a reminder that winter’s just around the corner and I HATE winter. Ah well, at least I have 3 more months to look forward to!
I’m also not a fan of OIAJ but that’s mostly because oats in any form just don’t do it for me. I had a time where I was obsessed with overnight oats but now I’m pickier about my grains and really only like quinoa and buckwheat. But the whole food-in-a-jar trend is just overdone and makes things too hard to eat!
Alex @ therunwithin
NO WAY I DO THE EXACT SAME THING WTH HEADPHONES. especially on the metro because I don’t have a signal to listen to the radio and I don’t have music on my phone so I kind of have to just listen to nothing. but hey no one strikes up a weird conversation. I kind of dig it. I want you to make me your applesauce, I could really go for some homemade right now. when we get together, yes when, it will be a baking fest. Also I love those honey sticks but I can’t find them anywhere around me! I used to get them at a local health store near my college
Arman @ thebigmansworld
I’m with you on the oats in a jar shebang- I once tried it and I had to use a massive spoon just to get to the good bits at the bottom. I’ve seen both you and khushboo make some epic looking applesauce, although I have never been a fan- it reminds me of baby food for some reason! Those farmers markets cucumbers are begging to be pickled!
Harry potter in ancient Greek? They’d be a huge following there. you should really read it though- he’s a huge fan of almond butter and baked goods…. yes.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The storebought applesauce definitely reminds me of baby food, but this one is more like apple pie filling. And you lie about HP!
kristen @ verbs and vignettes
pretty sure i agree with your “too much work” stance” on the OIAJ… i do love to see all my toppings. though yours put mine to shame. come to think of it, i haven’t had a bowl of oatmeal in… months. it’s going to the top of friday’s to-do list.
and i know HP was a crazy phenomenon. by the seventh one i was reading because i thought i needed to finish, sort of hated it, and that last book took me a year. if you’re interested at all, i’d say just read the first one. it was my favorite, and i still remember where i read it and how enthralled i was.
Katie @ Daily Cup of Kate
I have never tried OIAJ and dont have any urge to in the near future. Plus. almost empty peanut butter jars are always given to our dog, Maddie as a treat! Its hilarious to watch her try and get every last bit of pb out…
Dana
I’ve never commented on your blog before, but I felt the need to today. You really should read Harry Potter. Based on the books that you post about, I think you would like them all. A lot. I didn’t read them until the month after I graduated from college. I was super bored because I was unemployed and my then-fiance-now-husband insisted that I read them since I had so much spare time. I devoured them. The audio books are read by Stephan Fry and are completely amazing too (great alternative to do in the background if you’re still not convinced. Fantasy & young adult novels aren’t really my thing, but these have an extra special quality to them.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thank you, Dana. I’m definitely considering it.
Shira
I must say I can’t relate to the notes thing.. every semester (through hs, university, college..) after my last exam I’d go through ALL my notes the very next day and get rid of everything I possibly could.. I dunno, it’s the organization freak in me and I don’t like clutter. Sometimes I’d get rid of too much!!
Also I read one harry potter yeeears ago, don’t even think I finished it, it wasn’t really my thing..needless to say I don’t really get the hype.
And I love fall, it’s my bday and many Jewish holidays so lots of family time and wonderful meals.. and of course the fashion.. but I will miss Summer so much.. I find hot days to feel lazy and relaxed for me and it’s like Sept 1st turns into go-go-go and I blink and it’s new years. Every year! it’s fun go-go-go but never as relaxing as Summer to me.. guess I don’t do much with the hot weather haha. Give me a pool or a lake and I’m so good ๐
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I can’t stand clutter either, and I’m pretty sure that if I had to keep them in my own home, I would probably throw them away. But the fact that they’re at my parents’? Wellll… ๐ Mom’s been after me to do something with them though, so they’re most likely on their way out…
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Healthy Kitchen
I’m SO glad I’m not the only one who’s not a fan of OIAJ! I totally agree with you – I hate having to dig around in a jar to eat my oats! And there’s never enough room in the jar for all the toppings I like to add. ๐
And I am so stinking excited for fall too! Pumpkin oatmeal, applesauce, lattes, roasted root vegetables and winter squash, stews… there is just so much good food! And I love the cozy feeling of the season too. I can’t wait! Except, I hate hate how fall always takes forever to get here because September usually ends up being so warm that it still feels like summer!
Confession: I might start using your earphone idea because honestly there are sometimes I just really don’t feel like talking to others either. I like to think I’m not antisocial, I’m just someone who appreciates solitude. ๐
Maria @ Pappa Don't Preach
I can not wait for fall!! I love those cozy chill days and fall sweaters, apple picking, baking! Nothing better! ๐
Confession for me – I’m in desperate need of a cocktail! It’s been quite a week!
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables
Hahaha it’s funny you don’t like OIAJ. I’ve never actually had them but I LOVE my smoothies in a jar. It means perfect nut butter distribution ๐ haha
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
But drinking with a straw is different from scooping with a spoon ๐
Annie @ my fuel and fitness diaries
I laughed a little bit when you said you wore headphones so people leave you alone. I totally used to do the same thing when I worked at a gym. Since all the members knew me I had a hard time getting any free time to workout without someone talking to me. Enter the headphones. Or the headphones with music playing at low volume…but still allowing me the appearance of rocking out and “not hearing” the person behind me. Girl, you gotta do what you gotta do!
Ellie@Fit for the soul
For once I can’t agree with you on something, haha! I loooove OIAJ and perhaps it’s the Korean in me, but I love to “work” for my food. Koreans, for example, love to eat things that are EXTRA SPICY or EXTRA HOT (TEMP), or EXTRA HARD TO PEEL, etc. because of the nature of our dishes. ๐
And I can’t wait for Fall either! Although your falls stump our cali ones. ๐
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
At the end of each summer I throw away all my old school stuff, unless it is some really great essay I have to keep. But otherwise it is just clutter I will never look at.
I have never read Harry Potter and never will! Way to fantasy, crap, young adult “novel” for me!
Lisa
I am SO ready for Fall!! ๐ I LOVE LOVE LOVE Fall and absolutely everything that goes with it!
Alexandra
You must have been thinking out loud this past weekend too because you and Angela of Oh She Glows are almost on the same page here – http://ohsheglows.com/2013/08/29/quick-n-easy-no-bake-protein-bars/!! And I keep old school notes…I tell myself they’ll one day be useful for something – same with textbooks.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Great minds think alike I guess ๐ And that’s what I always tell myself with notes, but I don’t think I’ve ever looked at them once ๐
Sky @ The Blonde In Black
I’m really not a fan of oats in a jar either. I mean I’ll do that when I’m done with a jar, but I prefer an open bowl too. And I’m still trying to figure out what to do with my old school notes too. Let me know what you do with them ๐ confession Einstein bagels just releases their fall flavors…I’m in trouble!
Davida @ The Healthy Maven
WE ARE THE SAME PERSON!!! I wear headphones all the time with no music…I feel like it really allows me to process my own thoughts! Sometimes I even run with them in but no music…so happy I’m not the only one!
Also sliced off the top of my finger cutting apples for those apple crumble bars OUCH!
kris
Faaalllll! It still seems so far away in my neck of the woods, but I’m SOOO ready and excited for it. Definitely my favorite season – I just lover everything about it!
and #3! Sometimes I reaaally just don’t feel like talking! I’m glad to know I’m not the only one to do that.
I hope your finger/nail is okay! The things we go thru for eating healthy!! ๐
Kat
No harry potter for this girl! Ive never read the books or seen the movies, and actually have zero interest in them, which is weird since I love fantasy type stuff. BUT I am also hugely against badwagoners, so I don’t want to be one of those people who read it just because people tell me too! I want to jump on board because I actually like something, ya know?
And I am totally ready for fall. I dream of sweat pants, books, and tea/coffee all day long.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ll admit that I’m a little curious, but I’ve been holding out for so long that at this point I’m just being stubborn on principle ๐
Nicole @ FruitnFitness
Your not the only one who wears earphones for no reason, I will do that too sometimes. I can’t wait for fall to make apple butter, apple sauce, pumpkin butter and stuff. Hopefully I avoid the injuries!
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
Number 2 and 3……. GUILTY! hahaha I can be introverted sometimes, and I totally do that too ๐ A girl needs her alone time, too!
Courtney @ Don't Blink. Just Run.
I totally agree with #1 and 2!
I’m not a big oat fan – so I vote nay for sure on that.
I’ve never read an entire Harry Potter book (I tried starting book 1 and failed). I’ve seen every movie though and absolutely LOVE them!
Hmm, a confession…well, it’s the busiest time of the month here at work and I won’t lie, if my reps aren’t giving me all the info I need I might make them wait a few extra minutes before getting them an answer. Firstly, they know better than to not give me all the info, but secondly, I’m a teensy weensy wittle bit evil! ๐
Natalie @ Lift,Sleep, Eat
I completely agree that summer is too energetic for me!! Is it weird that I LOVE dark and gloomy days where I can sit in my pyjamas with a warm mug of tea/coffee and watch a film?! I think I get the opposite of SAD – I get down/upset when its really sunny! On a separate note I also wear headphones but don’t listen to music sometimes if I deliberately don’t want to talk to someone…it still never normally stops them..I just get the old tap on the shoulder!
I love OIAJ though – although they’re not great for spreading toppings they’re so good for layering things up and then picking all the deliciously melty bits of nut butter…mmm!
Harry Potter..have to say I love it!! I’ve read all the books/watched all the films multiple times!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The biggest thing that gets me down about the winter is the cold. We get pretty hardcore winters up here in Alberta, and not being able to go outside without having to worry about losing digits gets old pretty fast. Other than that, winter is kinda pretty… but year-long fall would be the best ๐
Alex @ Kenzie Life
I’m really excited for fall as well. Summer is wonderful and I love the activity but I’m getting a bit worn down. I can’t wait for sweaters, pumpkin everything, and the chance to wear my fall hats! Also not a fan of OIAJ. I mean, oats are cool and I love my AB, but I don’t want to get it all over my hand when I’m digging out those last bites at the bottom of the jar.
Christina @ Pinch of Healthy
I never understood the appeal of OIAJ and I agree it looks like too much work for me. I’d rather just throw in some PB. I cannot wait for fall and everything that comes with it, hello pumpkin lattes!
lindsay
farmers markets make me feel healthy. They could sell crack and I’d be like.. oh it’s local. LOL! jk.
Love the dust and raspberries. Not sure if it’s good on yogurt.. maybe in a smoothie? ๐
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
๐ Well, I guess it -could- be local, depending on where you live ๐
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl
I’m really ready for Fall too and actually, some not so sunny days. I do like OIAJ, but only if there is plenty of leftover nutbutter inside. Throw your notes away…. just do it!!! ๐
Kaila @healthyhelperblog!
Nay Nay Nay on OIAJ! First off, my jars never have enough left in them for it to even be worth making…I scrape those suckers clean! And secondly, what’s the appeal? I’m actually not to fond of putting nut butter on oats to begin with so sticking them in a jar and then having to scrape the sides just to get a taste? Like you said, too much work.
