1. Let’s kick off this week’s randomness with some random facts, shall we?
1. But the real question is… why would you want to hunt unicorns?!
2. … Gross. I will no longer be shaking anyone’s hand.
3. Mind = boggled.
4. You better believe I’m trying this the next time I pop open a bottle of champagne.
5. Think about that the next time you’re temped to buy a quick snack…
2. And here’s a random fact about me… As much as I love the smell that scented candles give the air in my home, I have to admit that my favourite part is blowing them out and getting a whiff of the smoke. I’m also partial to the smell of gasoline and paint. And no, I don’t use them for cheap highs.
3. Also… I can’t sleep with my closet door open at night. Laugh all you like, but I saw Monsters Inc… I know what goes down when the lights go out. And you know that creepy feeling that you get when you’re walking up stairs from the basement and feel like something is going to grab you and drag you back? Yeah… totally get that one too.
4. Fact: fresh flowers make everything better (even if nothing was wrong to begin with). I make it a point to always try and have fresh flowers in my home because not only do they smell and look good, but they add such a positive energy to any room.
5. I really need to stop making a habit out of eavesdropping on other people’s conversations… but I can’t help it – sometimes there’s good wisdom to be learned! The other day I heard a guy standing in line behind me say: “if every day is the same as the day before, then life is passing you by.” Deep, random stranger. Real deep.
6. I apologize if you’ve left a comment in the last little while that hasn’t shown up on the site. I used to sift through my spam comments on a pretty regular basis to make sure that no real bodies accidentally found themselves stuck in there, but I’ve basically given up on it because the sheer volume of spam has been getting a little out of hand lately. It might not be too bad if I could read Chinese (apologies if this isn’t actually Chinese), but I can’t, and it gets a little tedious to filter through when ¾ of your spam looks like this…
Err. Kate Spade? What?
7. I need an intervention. I’ve been listening to this song nonstop for about a week now and I’m worried that I’m going to get sick of it. Help.me.please.
[youtube=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aKIgAMhIIo&w=560&h=315″]
8. Coffee makes for a fantastic study aid… until you spill it on your notes.
At least it made them smell good…
9. Quick beauty tip for you guys. Take a small spray bottle (3 oz or so), fill it with water, add ~6 drops of tea tree oil, and shake it up. Then you can spray it on your face throughout the day, spot clean your makeup brushes, or even spray it on your pillow case before you go to sleep. The tea tree oil will help fight bacteria that can cause acne, and it’s just a great way to refresh your skin.
10. Happy Thursday! Make sure to smile today because… well… why not? 😀

Have any quick/easy beauty tips to share?
Do you have any silly fears that you can’t help but laugh at yourself for?
dixya| food, pleasure, and health
lol those random facts are hilarious and why do people have so much problem washing their hand? I absolutely love the smell of gasoline, nail polish remover, nail polish and the list goes on. I tried tree-tea oil on my acne, didnt really help but i like its smell. I have been removing my makeup with coconut oil – its wonderfully soft.
morgan
meanwhile back in ADD land, I am stuck on the bouncing raisin from the WOW facts…raisins could be a great addition to my Kombucha tonight…and I cannot, ever ever ever go to bed without checking the front door lock, at least twice (even when my husband is home- drives him nuts) Tea Tree oil is the best! I make my yoga mat cleaner & make up brush cleaner with it, use it on sunburns, bug bites, acne, cuts, scrapes, seriously it is the miracle cure plus I love the smell so much! when I start to get a cold, I put a dab of it under each side of my mose before I go to bed, no sniffles in the morning. But it is harsh so usually I use it with pure vitamin E oil on my skin to cut it a little.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It has a tendency to dry out my skin as well if I try to use it straight up, and while I’ve never tried it with vitamin E, I’ve found that jojoba oil works really well too.
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves
Yeah…why would anyone hunt unicorns?! Silly fact about myself? I don’t like having the same nut/seed butter two times in a row. I gotta keep the variety going.
Alex @ therunwithin
I WANT A UNICORN LICENSE please???? I could so go for that> I mean how badass does it sound to say hey I have a unicorn license? I love eavesdropping on conversations, I do it a lot. no shame. whether it is the metro, at my desk, on a walk. I could tell you about people’s lives easily
Lauren
I am huge on strange smells. I will admit to sticking my face right above a candle I just blew out, too! Cutting grass, gasoline, paint, and leaves burning are some of my top favorites. I have to keep my closet doors shut, too, because I always wake up in the middle of the night and feel like something is looking at me which I can’t see. I always have to have the underneath of my bed showing, so no bed skirts for this girl! Also, I sometimes have to close my front blinds at night because I feel like I’m being watched. LOL I’m paranoid, I guess. Best part of Starbucks is overhearing conversations ESPECIALLY at my college location. I got one too many laughs listening to some people exchange things from last night’s party 😉 Have a great day, love!
Olivia @ Liv Lives Life
Eww I never knew the handwashing fact. That just freaks me out. I always stare down women when I see them leaving the bathroom without washing their hands…I mean, come on, is it really that difficult?? And I am SO trying that raisin thing.
I totally can’t sleep with my closet doors open, either. I also can’t allow my hand to go over the side of the bed, because I’m afraid something will grab it. It’s weird, but true.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Right there with you on not being able to have any limbs sticking over the side of the bed… No reason to tempt the monsters 😉
Lisa @ Lisa the Vegetarian
I totally agree with you on the closet/basement weird fears. I have them too! And I also like the smell of smoke when blowing out a candle. Another one of my silly fears: Any time I’m walking outside and there’s a small ledge (or a lake/pool/anything you can fall into), I get freaked out that I’m going to trip and fall in. Even if it’s just a tiny one.
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
That random fact about washing one’s hands after using the restroom is just nasty…and scary!! It makes me never want to shake hands with anyone ever again ;).
Miss Polkadot
Okay, you’re going to call me crazy after reading this comment but … oh, well :). After finishing the raking of the leaves when me and my siblings were younger my dad let us sit on the foilage-filled trailer he drove to the composting site. And, well, I liked the gasoline smell, too, and – here’s the weirdness – thought it somehow smelled of marzipan. Don’t ask me why! I honestly can’t tell why I thought so but I remember telling others I did.
If I had a walk-in closet I’d never ever be able to sleep with the door open, either. To this day, I still check under my bed every night before going to sleep. Check for monsters, obviously ;).
By the way: you have such a neat handwriting. My mum would be happy if mine looked like yours though hers is no better.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You might be on to something with the marzipan thing! Someone else said parking garages remind them of a bakery smell, so it may not be such a weird thing after all 😉
Brittany
I can’t sleep with closet doors open and I hate when my limbs hang off the bed haha. no no no. As for the smells uhh..I love the smell of the worst chemicals. I love the smell of cleaning products in particular, and I am sure when I use them I am killing my brain slowly but surely. I also love the smell of certain (unused) cat litter. OHH my gosh yes. My mind was blown at that backwards sentence fact..whoa.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
I’m going to blame the gasoline thing on the family business 😉 And yeeesss Five Finger Death Punch!! Love that band. The music you’re posting lately is making me so happy!
And that’s terrifying about the vending machines. How does that even happen? It’s probably from people getting angry when their snack gets stuck so they freak out and shake it and it falls on them. That’s my theory, anyways…
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
😆 I hope that’s what it is. Either way, I’m going to start giving them a wider berth…
Hollie
I’m personally not a candle/smell person. I think my mom burned so many of them when we were children that it could to be enough for me LOL. Those facts are interesting but somewhat scary. Washing their hands? I will admit, I also carry a small baby hand sanitizer in my wallet key chain because it just attached there. I’m not really a germ a phobe but I do like to be cleanly I suppose.
Helene
When I was little and my mom was going to take gas I used to open my window wide to smell the gasoline. I love it! And she thought I was completely nuts ahah.
I also like any kind of randomn fact 😉
Ashlee@HisnHers
Vending machines?! They just put some tempting, healthier snacks in our work vending machines but I think I’ll stay away haha
Jo @ Living Mint Green
lol! Get out of my head – I’ve been internally raging about all those chinese spams lately. Hahaha!
I adore the smell of gasoline – and those old school permanent felts – before sharpies came along. BRB – need to Google why humans like chemical smells.
Ok I’m back! Here’s what I found:
“The smell of gasoline can make some people nostalgic for their childhood, says Dr. Alan Hirsch, a neurologist and psychiatrist with an expertise in smell and taste. Gas may jog the memory of summers spent at the lake where powerboats ran rampant, or of summertime in general. We’re actually wired such that smells trigger memories. In fact, the olfactory lobe (which is in charge of smell) is part of the limbic system (which controls emotions) [5].”
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I knew the part about smell triggering intense memories, but the weird thing is that I don’t really have any good memories [that I can think of] that are associated with gasoline…
Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health
Haha, I love that you learn such valuable lessons on life through eavesdropping.
I don’t blame ou for not sifting through the spam comments either, that’s so time consuming! Lol at the Kate Spade part!
Sky @ The Blonde In Black
I have a pretty poor sense of smell. Like it has to be really strong or someone has to say something before I may notice the scent. A weird smell I love is the smell of a dairy. Growing up being surrounded by dairies the smell didn’t bother me and I didn’t think much of it. Now that I’m in college and don’t live at home anymore I love that smell because it reminds me of home 🙂 anytime and really that many people don’t wash their hands?!!! Eww. Just eww.
Parita
#2 – ME TOO! Love that smell!
#9 – Great idea! I’m totally going to do that!!
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat
So…I can’t sleep with my closet door open either!!! I’ve been like that since I was a child and I think it’ll never change. I mean…scary things can happen in there! 😉
I love that beauty tip! Unfortunately, I have acne issues, so I definitely trying it out! I use organic coconut oil as a moisturizer. It leaves my skin feeling so soft and hydrated with a light coconut scent.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Coconut oil makes such a great moisturizer! But definitely give the tea tree oil a try! It’s really worked wonders in terms of reducing breakouts for me.
meredith
I love the smell when you blow out candles too lol – always reminds me of being a kid around Hanukah time and lighting the Menorah…I love new car smell and just yesterday opened a can of tennis balls- love that smell as well!
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl
Okay… that “bored” sentence is way too weird! I used to be the same way with my spam, but it’s just out of control. I have to admit, as a kid I loved the smell of gasoline, but now I’m just kind of afraid to breath it in.
Megan @ runningonjava
My mom always makes fun of me because I love the smell of odd places/items. Gasoline, paint, and the inside of parking garages (a recent discovery). I can’t quite explain it. That all being said, yes, I still do enjoy ordinary-smelling candles and whatnot. We’re all a little weird, right?
I’m also guilty of listening in on conversations. I’ll actually but in if I’ve just walked into the room and say, “what were you saying?” It’s really bad. Guess I’m just nosy.
Oh, and coffee spilling on your notes just makes them smell better, yes? 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m with you on the parking garage one, but I always thought that was because my dad has always been into cars so I kind of grew up around those smells. And the only downside to having coffee smelling notes is that it makes me crave the brew all.the.time.
Carly @ Snack Therapy
I love the smokey smell of candles, too. That smell always makes me think of chocolate birthday cake, because that’s how birthday candles smell when you blow them out. Out brains sure can make some pretty cooky association.
I would say that spiders are my silly fear, but we all know that spiders are actually terrifying and horrible. Ick. My REAL fears are tight spaces and open water. Don’t even talk to me about scuba diving. It’s like my worst nightmare.
Ashley @ Life and Fitness
A random silly fact about me is that I can say the alphabet backwards! As for the #2 fact up there, that is disgusting haha. I don’t understand how people don’t wash their hands.
Liz (formerly VeggieGirl)
I have to sleep not only with doors closed, but also locked.
Caitlin
Hahaha ok i just laughed out loud at that first number (big kid now thinks i’m crazy…he’s watching a movie at the moment so i decided to catch up on some blog reading…he doesn’t find those facts nearly as interesting/entertaining as i do). And i thought i was the only person in the world who liked the smell of gasoline! I have no idea why, either, but it’s something i’ve liked since i was a kid. Glad to see I’m in good company 🙂 and fresh flowers are the best! Someone finally picked up on the fact that he’s supposed to buy them for me (after watching me buy my own for how many years now…good thing he’s cute!) and he does a good job of keeping me well supplied every week/other week depending on how long they last 😛 better late than never 😉
Have a great thursday hun!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
They can be taught! Mine has actually been pretty good with that as well… I think mostly because he’s trying to make up for the fact that he’s not around 😕
Ksenija @ Health Ninja
Haha. No, it isn’t Chinese it’s Japanese actually 😉 but never mind, I doubt that someone who does not speak one of them will notice the difference.
Regarding the coffee spilling, I broke my personal record the recent days: spilled half a cappuccino on my top on Sunday, sprinkled some on my skirt on Monday and emptied the remaining of my Tuesday morning cup on the keyboard of my office PC. Luckily by turning it upside down immediately I managed to save it. Wednesday was coffee-spill-free, so I hope I broke the curse *knock on wood* .
Melissa- threredheadedrunner.blogspot.com
I like the smell of garlic. Tons of garlic! That’s what happens when you are raised by Italians. Oh and I will be 30 next months and I cant sleep with my arm or foot hanging off the bed. You never know who or what is under the bed ready to pull you under. Ya know?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I know -exactly- what you mean because I feel the same way 😆
Andrea
Did you guys ever see that Disney [channel] movie Don’t Look Under the Bed? That’s what I always think of!
Khushboo
Haha is it weird that i have an irrational fear of falling down everytime I walk down the stairs- you better believe I hold on to that rail TIGHT! Those fun facts are awesome! Note to self: always carry a box of raisins in case I find myself with a glass of bubbly….new party trick? I think so!
Karine
Hahaha, this gives me the opportunity to try remembering my Japanese language “study” : Kate Spade Hand Bag Caban. 😉
Lisa
I love the fun facts you post on your thinking out loud posts.
Always interesting to me.
I just heard the tea tree oil tip! I can only use it sparingly otherwise it really hurts my skin for some odd reason. Of course I have the most sensitive skin in the world.
Oh my gosh – I’m the exact same way with my closet door. For the life of my it can not be open when I sleep!
And I happen to eavesdrop a little too often myself;)
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The oil can really dry out my face too if I’m not careful, but I find that using a few drops diluted in a lot of water works just fine… as long as you can stand the smell.
Jessie
I love the smell of gas… and that’s too funny about you loving to whiff the smell of your candle after your blow it out because girl, I do the exact same thing. I swear, if we lived closer.. we’d probably be the best of friends!
Candice
Oh yes-closet door must be kept closed. I’ve always done this and I’ll even go into my kids room to shut their door. Also when I turn the lights off in the basement I sprint sooooo fast up the stairs. The darkness just creeps me out!
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles
I mean, if your Voldemort (or even just want an eternal, cursed life), you’d definitely want to hunt unicorns. (Oh…but you haven’t read Harry Potter. Well, you can pretend like you know what I’m talking about. :P) I’ve been having the same problem with spam lately too…I’m also getting more slip through the spam filter and go straight to my moderation box than normal. It’s weird, and annoying, and I want it to stop. 🙁 And on another note…I cannot go to bed with my closet doors open. When I was a kid, I couldn’t go to bed with my bedroom door closed (because I was afraid that if something were in my room, I wouldn’t be able to open the door and run away from it fast enough).
Laura @losingrace
I LOVE FFDP. “walk away is a great song”– I’ve been listening to “Far from home” a lot—amazing.
I can’t sleep with my bedroom door open. I feel exposed and awkward!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Far From Home is another favourite by them <3 And then, of course, there's always Bad Company.
Pickyrunner
I can’t sleep with my door open either. Even on my boat, I shut my door despite it being a tiny space and I’m the only one there. Closets are the same. Have to protect ourselves from the monsters! I’m like you with the liking to strange scents that aren’t supposed to be healthy or good. And I don’t use them for highs either. I’ve been having the same problem with spam lately too! I may make an announcement saying anyone who had left a comment that doesn’t show up should email me…
Melissa
Hmm, good question, I like the smell of warehouse stores such as BJ’s and Sam’s Club, because to me, they always smell a little reminiscent of a bakery!
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers
Thanks for the beauty tip! I think I need a hunting license for anyone who would want a hunting license for unicorns. Just sayin… As for smells, I too like gasoline, and I like nail polish/polish remover. Odd.
Lucie
Just listening to the song and I love it!
I love the smell of fresh paint too. Even more of kerosin. it’s good, AND it reminds me of my days as Flight Attendant. Oh, these days…..
I can not leave the curtain of my bathtub closed. It needs to be open. I once saw a horror movie when a woman opened it and a bloody dead body lied in the tub. EEK!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
… And now I’m just that much happier that I don’t need curtains on my tub 😆
Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness
fun fact about me- i have the worst sense of smell. like, i probably pick up on a quarter of things other people smell, and it has to be really close to my nose or REALLY overpowering. thanks for the tea tree oil tip! and i have so many silly fears – i did that closet one for a while too!
