Ready. Set. Random!
1. I’ve come to the very disappointing realization that I can’t eat carrots in mass quantities; and by mass quantities I mean I can’t really eat more than one serving of baby carrots a day…
I was BLTing on some baby carrots the other day before I realized that I’d gone through something like 1/3 of the bag in one sitting. No problem, right? Carrots are healthy. Well, I didn’t really think anything of it, but my stomach certainly did. Hellooooo what I like to call “squirrely guts” for the next two days. And I know it was the carrots because the same thing has happened a few times in the past. Actually, my stomach seems to have a problem with all of the orange colored veggies in general. Pumpkin. Kabocha. Butternut… Anytime I eat more than a small amount at a time, it takes a few days for my digestive system to sort itself out again. What.the.heck.
2. That was an incredibly long random thought, so here’s a shorter one:
And in case you were wondering, the song was Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. Still obsessed.
3. Lately I’ve been craving (and munching on) raw oats. Is that normal? I don’t know what it is, but I’m just loving their taste and texture. So far I haven’t noticed any ill effects, but I hate to tempt fate. Will it kill me?
4. What about taking naps with gum in my mouth? Or eating expired cereal?
So many bad habits! If I randomly stop posting and disappear, it may mean I either a) choked on gum in my sleep, or b) was stricken with a rare plague that comes from eating expired grains. Hey, you never know…
5. Speaking of not knowing… I don’t actually know the phone numbers of 95% of the people in my contact list. I get a number, put it in my phone, and that’s the end of it. If I ever found myself in a situation where I had to dial a number and didn’t have my iPhone with me, I’d be up sh*t creek without a paddle in quite an awkward predicament (and yes, that’s an official dictionary definition of ‘up sh*t creek’).
6. I do know that it’s pretty much impossible to be in a bad mood after listening to this song. I’ve had Michael Buble’s newest album on repeat since the day I bought it, and yeah… this song always puts a smile on my face.
[youtube=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QYxuGQMCuU&w=560&h=315″]
7. So does this!
The Edmonton Health and Wellness Show. It’s happening this weekend, and I’m 99.9% sure that I’ll be going. I’ve never been to a show like this, so I’m curious to see what they’re all about and hopefully learn some new things. The field of health and wellness has been whispering sweet nothings into my ear lately, and I’d like to become a little better acquainted with it.
8. I’d also like to figure out how the heck to get the 46 posts that are sitting in my drafts folder to actually appear on the blog. Apparently there’s a lot I want to talk about… I think I mentioned that I might start posting more than once a day waaaaay back in February, and while it hasn’t happened yet, it still might.
9. So I’m excited. After months and months of going back and forth on the subject, I finally decided to sign up for Foodie Penpals for May. I figure it’s a great way to connect with new people and get introduced to new products. Can.not.wait.
10. I’m also ridiculously excited for a few other upcoming changes that will [hopefully] be taking place in my life. There’s so much I want to share with you guys about some of my future plans. So much. But is it time? Will I be judged? Do I care? Gah! So many questions. And as much as I hate cryptic statements like this, the answers are going to have to wait…
Happy Thursday, friends!
. – . – . – .
Do you (or are you planning to) work in the realm of health and wellness? What do you do?
Raw oats: have you tried them?
dixya@food, pleasure, and health
I put myself in awkward situations all the time – singing out loud, sometimes waving at wrong person, & looking at mirror not realizing it is double sided. Yep I am that girl. Health and Wellness show sounds like a fun thing to do 🙂 cant wait to hear about it Amanda
Stacey
I love this post because it is exactly how I’m feeling today – super random and all over the place! That’s not to say that our sporadic thoughts aren’t productive though 😉
Jessica @ Prayers and Apples
..excited for you for whatever challenges you have coming up! 🙂 ..and the only phone number i actually know outside of my contact list is my mom’s lol 🙂
Liz (formerly VeggieGirl)
LOVE that Imagine Dragons song too!! And yes, I’ve been caught a few times rockin’ out in my car, haha.
Victoria @ Reluctantly Skinny
I always rock out in my car…no shame! That health and wellness show sounds like fun. I’ve really been enjoying going to festivals and other stuff like that…it’s a good chance to try some new things and talk to the people who make or work for the products you love!
Alex @ therunwithin
for whoever is your foodie pen pal, they are lucky. man you will put together one killer box. better than the ones I ever got, which is why I stopped. I eat carrots like it is my job. Love them – but they do damage on your stomach so i am super careful. I always jam out on the metro without knowing (like mouthing the words or something).. whooops
Miss Polkadot
Woops, thinking about it I’d be SO stuck if I had to call somebody not having my phone on hand. Funnily enough, I can give myself some kudos for knowing my mum’s number ;). She doesn’t know it by heart – who doesn’t know one’s own number?! – so she kept asking me to tell her when I was still living at my parents’. Once it even got so far she handed me the telephone receiver when she was ordering something so I could tell the lady her number :D.
You have 46 drafts on your computer? I’m impressed. Sure, I do have some, too, but not even close to that amount – most are “drafted” in my head. Not a particularly good place if I want to actually publish them anytime soon, I guess.
Aaaah, you’re such a tease! Now I’m super curious about the changes possibly taking place in your life. Do you have any idea on when you might spill the beans? In a week? A month? ..
Oh, also: Raw oats certainly have a little something-something to them. It’s hard to describe but it’s some kind of hearty, wholesome and “creamy” taste. You better believe I just got up and had a spoonful just to describe the taste :).
Happy Thursday!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Confession: I don’t really know my home phone number either. I have a landline, but I hardly ever use it so I really need to stop and think when someone asks me for my number. As for spilling the beans, it’ll be when I make a few more concrete decisions, but I really have no idea when that’ll be 😕 Hopefully soon!
Karey @ Nutty About Health
Baby carrots are sometimes mean to my stomach too… if I eat a whole kabocha I end up paying for it later too… it sucks because I LOVE kabocha, but my stomach thinks differently. Boo. I’m still going to eat it sometimes though, just maybe a smaller one, or half. 😉
The health & wellness expo sounds fun! Glad you have more of an interest. I currently work part-time at a nutrition/health food store & am going to school to become a Dietician… someday. 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Ugh, it definitely sucks! I love kabocha as well, but I have a hard time eating just a little bit of it so I tend to avoid it in general. I don’t know what it is about orange foods…
Hollie
I’ve had that issue with pumpkin before but never anything else that I can remember. (I also don’t really eat a lot of carrots so that’s that…). I wouldn’t see the problem with eating raw oats, isn’t that what overnight oats are? (I actually have no idea because I’ve never tried them…ha).
Brittany
Thanks to you I am also obsessed with that song. So catchy and great to run to! Raw oats should be fine! I use them in my energy bites, but haven’t tried them on their own. Go with it haha. Umm I eat expired food all the time, it’s not a big deal I swear haha.
Andrea
I’m really surprised that you were able to keep that box of cereal past the expiration date, you love cereal! 🙂 If I get caught rocking out in my Jeep, I usually pretend I didn’t notice them noticing me, and just continue. Maybe it makes their day?! I do not work in the field of health and wellness at all, but one day I would like to go to the California School of Herbal Studies. After I finish my Bachelor’s degree for what I am going to school for and all 🙂 Raw oats? Yes. Usually not more than a spoonful though, since they are pretty dry! So excited to hear about your future plans!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I do love cereal! But I didn’t love this one so much 😕 It was Kashi’s Flakes and Berries, and just not really what I look for in a cereal. Still slowly picking away at it, though 😆
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles
I take naps with gum in my mouth! And then by the time I wake up it’s all gross and disgusting.
The only people’s numbers I know in my contact list are my mom and my dad’s cell phones and my mom’s work phone. We moved about 2 years ago, and I still don’t actually know my home phone number.
I’ve never eaten raw oats…nor do I have the inclination to…that sounds…interesting. 😉
Ashley @ Eat Run Live Happy
I have not tried raw oats…. maybe throw in some raw blueberries and I’d be up for trying it. I do plan on going into the health field. Not as a nurse or anything since I don’t do blood but maybe a group trainer or even a Counselor.
Khushboo
Consider this an order to go to that Health & Wellness show…at least so you can come back & share about it :)! Jokes aside, I definitely think it could be an interesting few hours! I am super excited to hear more about your upcoming life changes and I promise no judgement from me..just support :)! Since the start of the year, I set up my own nutritional consulting business to help individuals meet their individual dietary needs. Being able to make such an impact on someone truly is rewarding and I am so thrilled that I finally took the leap. If your future plans has anything to do with getting into the health & wellness field and you’d like to toss up some ideas or anything, please know I am always here to help where I can!
Eating 4 Balance
This makes me feel so much less weird, but I’m the same way with orange vegetables… No idea why!
I’ve always thought that Foodie Penpals would be super fun to participate in, but I don’t think that there is anything out there that people could send me that I’d be able to eat. Lol. Do you think that I could sign up and just ask for non-edible cooking items like spoons, magazine and cooking utensils? 😉
For every one person that judges you, there is at least one person that is jealous.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You probably could ask for those things, actually! When you get in touch with your penpal, you tell them all about your allergies/intolerances and if there’s anything you like or want. I have allergies too, so I’m curious to see how it’ll go!
Missy
“Raw” oats is basically Muesli without the nuts and fruit and stuff. I say eat up!
I bet you’d dig a box of my favorite brand:
http://www.dorsetcereals.co.uk/things-we-make/muesli/
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom
I always sing and dance in my car…and when Matt Nathanson is playing, all bets are off. I belt my heart out and don’t care who is watching! I just laugh and smile. Who cares? 😉 I just heard that Michael Buble song yesterday and it was so cute!! I am also loving Radioactive… its one of my favorite songs to run to?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I smile and wave too. At that point, I figure I have nothing to lose, and it usually ends up making the whole thing less awkward.
Nicole @ FruitnFitness
I’m sorry your stomach doesn’t like orange foods, but glad that you have figured it out! I always snack on a few raw oats while I’m making my breakfast oatmeal or a batch of granola, I love the chewy texture.I hope you love your may FPP, I have had so much fun with it so far!
Liv @ Life As Liv
Oh I’m so guilty of rocking out in my car with an audience. I can’t help it if the song is just so good that I can’t control my voice (and awesome) dance moves… PS, Radioactive is INCREDIBLE!! My Organizational Behaviors professor actually introduced me to the song (he plays music before class starts) and I’ve been in love ever since. I highly doubt it will every get old.
Lauren
I definitely used to eat raw oats all the time in college. I love the taste of oats, I guess? I think all raw vegetables give me the grumbly tummy in large quantities! I think it’s only raw vegetables, though – the worst being carrots or broccoli. I have so many old posts in my drafts folder it’s ridiculous lol. Wayyy too many. I’m excited to hear about your new work-related goals in health and wellness?! Please do share!
Jemma @ Celery and Cupcakes
I’m exactly the same I cannot remember anyone’s phone number either, except my husbands. If I lost my phone and he didn’t answer I would be screwed!
De @ Cooking for the Other Half
I’m excited to hear about your life changes & plans, girl! 🙂
I am also guilty of the rocking out in my car and getting strange looks from passing drivers, but oh well!!!! 🙂
meredith
I have issues with carrots too – I find that if I microwave them for a little bit, it helps with the stomach/digestion issues…In fact, I have stopped buying the baby carrots completely to avoid the problem of me choosing to eat them without thinking. I buy the whole carrots that need to be peeled to sort of prevent me from touching them without peeling, slicing and roasting lol…I totally got caught yesterday singing while running. I might have even been dancing slightly when all of a sudden a landscaper was right in front of me. He waved. lol
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hehe – I always wave and smile back at the people who catch me. I find it sort of breaks the ice and makes the whole situation a whole lot less awkward.
Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health
Oh, can’t wait to find out the news!! We won’t judge you, tell us! 🙂 I keep going back and forth on the pen pals thing too bc I’m so picky. But I’m interested to see how yours works out. I work in healthcare but am very interested in health/wellness work.
Kat
Im the queen of rock concerts in the car. Or country jams. Whichever one Im feeling on that day 😉
And the fact that you eat raw oats kind of reminds me of the goats I used to own. They loved raw oats! It was like their special treat 🙂
Im excited for your future too!! I think you should totally go to that expo. I bet it is going to light a fire under your booty!
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, and Beers
Ummmm, hold up, cereal expires??? Mine never hangs around long enough for that. 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Mine doesn’t usually either, but I bought a box of Kashi’s flakes and berries, and wasn’t really a fan 😕
Sara @ Magia e Pasta
I eat raw oats by the handful alllllllllllll the time! I’m still around, so I think you’re good 😉
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
I’m pretty sure having to stick to one serving of baby carrots a day would make me sad. Easily one of my favourite foods! Whenever I wander into the kitchen I tend to just grab a handful.
I think the age of cellphones has screwed us all over in regards to memorizing phone numbers. I have to think for a few minutes to remember my parents’ numbers, let alone everyone else in my contact this. In fact, I don’t think I even know Eric’s off by heart…(although to be fair, I live with him so I don’t really have to call/look at his number in my phone all that often).
I’m pretty bad with expiration dates…and that’s with stuff like yogurt and condiments. I’m fully convinced that cereals and grains don’t actually expire.
The expo looks great! Go! Never know what you’ll learn or what contacts you can make. And changes?!? I’m intrigued!! Expect me to text-bug you about that 😉
Lisa @ Live and Be Awesome
I had a spoonful of raw oats the other day, and I was wondering if there was anyone else who’d ever done that haha. So you and I aren’t alone! They were surprisingly yummy. 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Right?! I looked into it a little more, and apparently it’s safe to do. So I guess as long as it’s not causing you any stomach probs, go for it 🙂
Sarah @PickyRunner
It makes me really sad that you can’t eat mass quantities of baby carrots. I seriously chow down on a full bag a day and I would eat more if I had them but I have to limit myself and remind myself to eat some real foods too. Expired cereal is totally legit. Even stale cereal. No shame. If it tastes good, I’ll eat it. And cereal ALWAYS tastes good.
Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen
Hm I’ve never eaten raw oats but I’m sure it’s plenty good for you! That’s funny about your carrots and orange food realization. How strange!
Ari
46 drafts? Wow I’m impressed! And interesting about orange foods and you not getting along well!
I’m with you on the phone numbers… I have a bunch of names and numbers that I don’t recognize. For the longest time I have some initials in my phone and I have no idea why they were there!
As for the rocking out to a song… if I’m running with music, sometimes I’ll throw my hands up in the air at a good part of a song.. people look at me weird. I feel like it happened with Radioactive the other day!
Ashley @ Life and Fitness
It’s funny you won’t eat raw cookie dough, but you’ll eat expired cereal and raw oats! You’re missing out the cookie dough 😉 I’m so jealous Imagine Dragons was on the radio. By me they only ever play one of their songs and that’s it.
Robyn
Oh I thought I was the only one who ignored expiration dates on foods I really wanted to keep eating…I’m ok so far so it must not be sooo bad…right?
Also I have recently seen a lot about that foodie pen pal thing and I’m really interested but also kinda nervous too, I will be excited to see how yours goes and hopefully build up the courage to do it myself 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Yeah it’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for -months- after seeing it all around the blog world, but I always put it off. Took the plunge this month, though, and I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes 😀
kris
#6! I loveee that song! Definitely gets ya into a good mood no matter what 🙂
And that health and wellness show looks awesome! I wish there were more expos like that where I lived so I could attend.
I like to sprinkle raw oats on my yogurt, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried it straight up. I’ve definitely eaten expired oats though, haha.
Excited to hear more about #10 soon! Have a great day, Amanda!
Elizabeth@myneonrunningshoes
I usually catch other people jamming… makes my day every time 🙂
Lisa
I can easily down a bag of carrots in a day…or a pint of blueberries and strawberries easily. They’re like my weakness.
Haha, my contact list sounds about the same…probably only 1/3 on there are people I actually have plans to or do contact. Yikes. Better update that one.
Go to the wellness show! I bet it would be an amazing experience for you, you know 🙂
Girl, you won’t be judged and if you are that is their business not yours. Judgement from others actually has nothing to do with us but that person. Can’t wait to chat more via text over this, I know you’ll do amazing things!
Happy Thursday love!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I can go crazy with the fruits (hellooooo half a huge watermelon!), but veggies cause me a lot more problems 😕 And I’m pretty sure you kind of know what I have in mind already 😉 It’s just about taking the first steps…
Heather @fitncookies
I have been caught jamming in the car. I usually stop singing and dancing and looking like a goof and turn the other way, never to make eye contact again. Whoops! I haven’t eaten raw oats by themselves, btu I put them in my smoothies, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with eating them plain. My mom told me at a very young age never to sleep with gum in your mouth. So I’ve listened. The reality? Not sure if it is a big deal or not,but I’ve never done it. I would hope you keep blogging so I know you didn’t die of choking or expired grains 🙂
Lucie
I eat raw oats all the time. Hey, yes, I am alive!! So I guess you don’t have to worry. Haha, back in the days when I had a car, I was caught singing and dancing behind the wheel all the time. Soooo embarrasing but them I just smiled and got a smile back. Win. Have fun with the Foodie Penpals! I think it’s a great thing, I got a bit too stressed put and besides that ot was expensive, but besides that i looved it!!
Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness
I love hearing people talk about future plans! The more outlandish the better!! It’s so uplifting and it always gets me thinking about what I really want to do/accomplish, a lot of which i can’t even admit because it sounds so crazy even in my own head. gotta just go for it i guess 🙂 i love rocking out in the car. a little car dancing does a body good!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I always get inspired when people start talking about their goals or accomplishments too. It’s like… heyyyyyyy they did it! Maybe I can too…
