Oh, random thought Thursdays, how I love you; especially because…
1. I’ve been having a really rough time with sleep lately. This time it’s not waking up way too early, but going to sleep way too late. For whatever reason, I haven’t been able to fall asleep at my normal grandma hours lately – I lay down at around 10 to do some reading (which usually does a pretty good job in knocking me out), and I’m still awake an hour later. At that point, I start getting a little worried and turn off the lights to fall asleep, only to end up tossing, turning, and punching my pillow for another hour or so. Fail.
2. That being the case, you’ll have to excuse the increased randomness of my rambles today. Did you know that…
Well, now you know
3. And speaking of knowledge… Does anyone know the proper way to decalcify a water kettle? I know there are special solutions that do it, but I’d really rather not use chemicals if I can avoid it. I’ve heard that boiling a few rounds of white vinegar works, but I’m afraid to have my water tasting like vinegar after that. Help?
4. The other day, I saw what was probably the coolest 80-year-old (ish?) lady that I’ve ever seen. She was rocking workout clothes with a bright pink top, which went perfectly with the streak of bright pink that she had in her otherwise stark white hair. Man… if I can be that cool when I’m 80 then I have no problem getting old.
5. I might have a slight problem with shopping, though…
Lately it seems like I can’t walk into the mall without stopping by either Sephora or MAC. In my defense, though… deodorant is kind of one of those things that you can’t exactly go without, and self-tanner is a good way to practice sun safety. I threw around the idea of using a self-tanner in my last Thinking Out Loud post and finally decided to give it a go. I’ll let you guys know how it works out.
6. I think it’s high time for a haircut…
… which is why I scheduled one for tomorrow. I used to be horrible about getting my hair trimmed on a regular basis because I wanted my hair to grow nice and long and figured that cutting it would kind of be defeating the purpose. I’d cut my bangs at home whenever they started to get too long, but I wouldn’t touch the rest of my hair. Strangely enough, my hair didn’t really grow… The problem was that it would reach a certain point and just break off, so it wasn’t really getting any longer. As counter-intuitive as it seems, the more often I cut my hair, the faster it grows and the longer it gets. Win. And besides… I kind of love going in and getting pampered at the salon.
7. I also love playing around with the idea of doing something drastic to my hair… I’ve had long hair for pretty much my whole life, only ever changing my color and bangs, but seeing women rocking awesome pixie cuts totally tempts me to try it out as well. I’m scared, though. I’ll be the first to admit that my hair is a huge security blanket for me, and the idea of not being able to twirl it around my fingers (or not liking it) is what keeps me from taking that chance. Maybe someday… as a spur of the moment kind of thing… when I’m highly inebriated.
8. Finding comfort in sad songs…
[youtube=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7u50SBaVOg&w=560&h=315″]
9. Speaking of music, I have a habit of dancing around my apartment and belting out random songs at the top of my lungs. Sometimes I worry that my neighbors will hear me and think I’m a complete nut. They wouldn’t actually be completely off…
10. Smile! It’s almost Friday, the sun is shining, and life is good 😀
. – . – . – .
How often do you cut your hair? Have you ever done/thought about anything drastic?
Katie @ KatieEnPursuit
Happy Friday “Eve”! The only time I ever did anything drastic to my hair was right before senior prom, I got it all whacked off & went “boy short” for a few years, I can’t imagine doing that now! My hairdresser makes me set a calendar reminder before I leave to call her in 3 months since I’m so bad about it! And that is interesting about the eyes, if true then I’m a total mutant, I’ve got naturally blue ones 🙂
Liz (formerly VeggieGirl)
Can’t wait to see your new ‘do!
I have hazel eyes. One of my nephews has a brown eye and a blue eye – it’s pretty cool-looking 😀
Caitlin
My eyes are brown and i have a hair appointment in three weeks. I can’t wait…seriously considering chopping my hair for the summer because I’m tired of it…we shall see 😛 i love your long hair but think you’d look gorgeous with a pixie cut 🙂
dixya@food, pleasure, and health
brown eyes 🙂 Since last visit- I am trying to not spend everything at Sephora, its hard I hear you friend 🙂 Hope sleep gets better for you. your hair is beautiful but sometimes its okay to go away from that comfort level and do something crazy, either you will rock it. Since I was little, if i have difficulty sleeping, I warm milk and add honey – it usually helps me 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
My mom used to make me a bedtime cup of warm milk with honey and cinnamon when I was younger too 🙂 Always worked like a charm.
Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health
I’m like you, I’ve had longer hair my whole life. I often think about changing it up with a shorter do but I have such a big head that I feel like it would only make it look bigger. You seem to have really cute features that would look great with a short cut though! I want to know what you think of the St. Tropez so please do review soon! 🙂
Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen
Lol I’m all about the random dancing and singing in my apartment. I pretend my roomies love it! Also a big fan of sad songs. I don’t know why but it really is comforting. Good song. And I love random tweet facts. So weird my eyes are a genetic mutation. Hmmmm haha have a great Thursday Amanda!
Caitlyn @ City and the Cubicle
Blue eyed gal here, too! I love having blue eyes and I also love that Drew Barrymore quote. Lately I’m loving her insight and interviews.
Sara @ fitcupcaker
I love the length of your hair! Mine is long and its taking me forever to get it this way so I am not cutting it anytime soon, although with it getting warm out, it is a pain! And I have blue eyes, I love the random facts, lol
Brittany @ Read, Run, Repeat
um, I sorta love that picture of you — AMAZING! My eyes are green – and I love them!! Wonder where they came from?
I’ve wanted to have super long hair for… forever! But never have the patience to wait for it to grow — plus, i’m kinda short, and I always end up looking like I’m 10, the longer my hair gets…. but i have cried when it’s been long-ish and have chopped it off!! I’ve colored my hair quite a bit – but nothing drastic, just darker than my normal color – the last 2 times i went with a color that had more red in it.
Missy
I’m actually shocked that you’ve never done the short hair thing! I have no idea why though… but perhaps it is because I have undying faith that it would look awesome on you.
I have waffled quite a few times, currently rocking mermaid style locks.. but have done a pixie in the past.
It is an incredible feeling, you will know when the time is right (it sounds like it might be?) and maybe try something along these lines and take it up to a pixie later if you want

Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Stop being an enabler!! 😛
Missy
Heehee…
you know…spring is coming *tease*
Nicole @ FruitnFitness
I would love to hear about how you end up cleaning the kettle and if it works! I cut off all of my hair sophomore year of high school. I donated 11 in to locks of love and it felt soo good to do it!
meredith
My eyes are green although can look blue or gray depending on my mood/outfit lol…I totally need a haircut – it has been almost 6 months and it is getting wayyyy to long for me. In the half marathon I ran this past weekend, I swear I looked like repunzle (Yes, I ran with my hair down. I injured my shoulder and couldn’t reach to put my hair up and didn’t trust that anyone would tie it right for me).
Ashley @ Eat Run Live Happy
I have light brown eyes. I used to dream of having blue or green eyes but just in the past year I’ve really come into my own and now I love every part of me. My brown eyes make me, me. They go well with my dark features.
I’m a licensed cosmetologist and my hair is long so I usually cut it myself. Although I cut my bangs too short this time and they bug the crap out of me. I had short hair all through high school and didn’t have a straightener (I looked like a lion) so I will never do anything drastic again.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I love what you said about your brown eyes! I went through exactly the same thing. My dad has green eyes and I always wished that I got my eyes from him instead of my mom, but the older I get, the more I realize that brown eyes rock with the rest of my features. It’s all about learning to accept ourselves 🙂
Shira
I have brown eyes and I kinda love it.. I know its weird, but they’re my fav eye colour!
And my hair kinda looks like yours, same colour, a bit longer (hard to tell from your photo) and much fewer layers, no bangs.. anyways, back in hs in grade 11 i cut my hair short, like ashley judd’s (at the time), that was my inspiration! It was scary, really fun, sometimes I felt insecure (I was 16, after all!) but I’m so glad I did it and I loved it at the time.. I haven’t had it so short since I grew it out, but it’s one of those things, if it’s inside you, you gotta let it out!
And it is so so true the more you cut the faster it grows! Happens to me too.
Nicole @ Sugar Coated Sisters
That’s interesting about the blue eyes mutation. I always grew up wanting blue eyes because my dad had them and I didn’t think it was fair, but now I’m happy that my eyes are green! I wonder how those originated…
I agree about the hair dilemma- I have random moments when I see girls with short blonde bobs and I want to get one, but I love having longish hair too much. Maybe after college!
Carly @ Snack Therapy
I have blue eyes so I totally appreciated that fun fact. I want to be an old lady with a pink streak in my hair someday. Balllin’!
Danielle @ Clean Food Creative Fitness
I am the same with my hair! I always want it to grow longer but I’m terrible about getting it cut. I’m really overdue for a haircut now actually! I love the color of your hair. So pretty!
Khushboo
Love your selfie, Ms Stunner :)! Although you don’t look like you need a haircut, a day at the spa can only be a good thing. I have a friend who is growing out her hair now and insists on getting trims once a month because she also finds that her hair grows back faster the more she cuts it..funny how that works, eh! I usually cut mine every 6-8 weeks…anything longer and my hair becomes outta control! When I was about 15, I went very drastic with blonde highlights- at the time I thought they looked amazing! Looking back at old photos only makes me cringe now- it definitely was one of those “what was I thinking” phases of life ha!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh girl, I’ve had plesntly of those – from hair styles, to makeup, to clothes… I just can’t help but look back and laugh.
Victoria @ Reluctantly Skinny
I don’t get my hair cut enough. I tell myself the same thing – I want it to grow so I won’t cut it, but it grows faster the more often I cut it. Still, I don’t do it enough!! Try vinegar, water, and baking soda. Baking soda works wonders, and if it doesn’t work, just boil some vinegar. You will want to run boiling water through it like 5 times after though to get rid of the smell, but it works!!
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
Well, I guess I’m some sort of mutation since I have blue eyes. Awesome! Haha. I was always so afraid of doing anything with my hair, but then I chopped it all off and it was super fun. I miss my long hair, but I did love the short look while it lasted!
Hollie
I know this is pretty ballsy but have you ever thought of doing a pixie but? I could see you rocking that because you are so confident and can do your makeup like a champion. That is just thought though. Is it just me or is this week gone by super slow?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Definitely been thinking about the pixie cut. So tempting, but so scary – it takes years to grow out and the process results in a lot of awkward phases 😕
And it’s not just you… super slow week.
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom
My eyes are hazely brown…. It depends on how I’m feeling/what time of day it is.
I say do it! I have ridiculously thick hair and it was long almost all of my life…until the spring semester of my junior year of college. I cut off my long, thick hair and have a pixie-ish cut. I can send you photos of it if you’re interested (although, I think there might be some pics of me on my page after it’s just cut). I got it cut yesterday because the bangs were getting long and the back of my hair was getting long, but I LOVE having short hair, especially because it’s thick. I live in FL, so summer time is a drag, and the short cut helps keep me from overheating.
Amanda @ maepress
Just curious, have you tried cutting back on caffeine? I know that you often profess your love for coffee – maybe it’s the culprit? I know that if I drink coffee after noon, I’ll have trouble sleeping.
My eyes are brown. My husband has beautiful green eyes, and we were speculating the other day how many kids we’d have to have in order to have a black haired (mine) green eyed (his) kid!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve definitely considered coffee as a culprit, but I usually only drink one cup of coffee a day and go through long periods of not struggling with my sleep without altering my coffee-drinking habits, so I have a feeling it’s not the caffeine 😕
Elizabeth@myneonrunningshoes
You are gorgeous!!! Definitely put up before and after pictures 🙂 I have the same problem… I never get my hair trimmed and it doesn’t grow!
Victoria
My hair was looking really unhealthy and split a bit over a year ago. I decided to chop it to my shoulders. And my hair was down to the middle of my back before! I loved how healthy and easy it was to take care of! And it grew back SO fast. It’s already back to the same long length and I haven’t cut it since. It was kind of fun because the length of all my hair was constantly changing. The only thing I had to do was get my friend (a hairdresser to trim my bangs a few times).
Victoria
Oops typo… That last bracket should have been after “hairdresser.”
Alex @ therunwithin
I keep saying I want to do something drastic with my hair but then I chicken out. I like my hair long but I am dying for maybe a swept bang or something. sleep has been terrible this week for me too, waking up every hour is never fun. just means coffee to the face
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Do it! I remember calling in love with side swept bangs the first time I had them done. It can totally change your look without being too extreme, and they grow fast if you don’t like them.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
I can honestly say I did not know that about blue eyes. So if all humans had brown eyes, when did green eyes come in? Before or after blue? Curious (because mine are green).
I’m the worst person ever with cutting my hair. Now, I get a trim maybe once every 6-8 months…but it’s better than the 1-2 years it was when I was younger. I’m pretty sure the shortest my hair’s ever been was when I cut it to about shoulder length when I was around 16…I have no problems playing with colour (my hair’s been every shade under the sun) but I am terrified of changing my style (long and straight). Every time I go to get a cut I tell myself I’m going to try something new and different…then I freak out and ask for one inch cut off. I need it looooong. That being said, I am probably due for a trim soon as well.
Holy gorgeous selfie, Batman! 😉
Sarah Pie
I’ve got some genetically mutated blue eyes 😉
As for the hair I’ve never done anything too crazy… I died it a purple-y -red color once when I was bored and hair dye was on sale… other than that I’ve rocked the same cut for the last 10ish years (pls or minus bangs).
Steph
My eyes are blue – thanks for that tidbit! Heh, I feel pretty cool now – genetic mutations for the win!
I cut my hair once every three or four months, usually. Right before starting high school, I decided to chop it down to a borderline pixie-cut length – and spent the next three years trying to grow it out. I also went through a full spectrum of hair colours: highlighted, bright ginger-red, black, and I even dyed a panel blue once.. Now, my hair is LONG (at least, compared to what is used to be) and my natural dark blonde; I keep toying with the idea of cropping it super short and spiky, just for kicks. My dying days are mostly behind me, at least until I start greying; I’ve decided to embrace my natural colour for the time being. 🙂
SLEEP – I hear you on weird/awkward sleeping patterns! I CANNOT sleep in for the life of me, no matter how late I go to bed – and recently, I’ve been waking up for a few hours in the middle of the night. I’m hoping this resolves itself soon! O.o
kathy @ vodka and soda
my eyes are brown. and i did something drastic to my hair once…i’ve always had long hair and one day i went into my salon and lopped it all off (over a foot of hair!!) into a pixie.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
See… I’ve always dreamed of doing that. How did it work out for you?
Kat
My eyes are green with a blue outer rim, just like my gmas 🙂
DID you know? That I grew up being babysat by the same lady who used to babysit Drew Barrymore? Ya, that basically makes her and I bffs right? 😉
And ugh haircuts….it always takes me forever and a day to get one because I can never decide how I want my hair. Keep it long or chop it all off?!
lucie
Sorry that you struggle with sleep hun! I know how annoying it can be and hope it gets better soon.
I feel you on the hair thing, I am blonde since forever – but I must say, 2 years ago I dyed it dark brown (similar to yours) which was pretty courageous I thought. I liked it for 6 months and then went back to blonde 🙂
Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness
Haha I love ramblings, the randomer the better! That is a really cool eye fact, mine are green. I have always wanted to do a pixie cut, but alas I do not have the bone structure. You should go for it, you could definitively pull it off!
Ashley @OurPersonalRecords
I have brown eyes, basically the most standard looking eyes around. I used to have a pixie cut, and I really loved it. It was so easy to manage. The drawback was that I would have to get it cut every 3 weeks, which got pretty pricey. The other drawback was that I rocked a mullet for about 2 years while growing it out. I really miss it, and think about chopping it all off all the time!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The manageability is one of the most enticing things for me, especially because washing, conditioning, drying, and styling long hair can be such a pain in the butt. The awkward growing out process though… not so much 😯
Lisa
Hopefully the sleep gets better for you love! Texting you again today:)
I’m still having trouble with my sleep too, so I feel you.
So pretty! I think your hair still looks gorgeous even if you think you need a haircut;)
I have blue eyes!
Haha, I’m the same at Sephora, I just can’t resist all the lovely things inside! It’s like my little heaven. I heart beauty products so much, maybe more than food products actually.
Ashley @ Life and Fitness
I have really dark brown eyes, but am considering trying colored contacts. I’m thinking of maybe going with a green. I had no idea Sephora even sold deodorant. That’s awesome that is all natural and chemical free. I’m hesitant to try natural ones because I’m afraid I will stink at the gym. Do you think they are as effective as drug store brands?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Be careful with colored contacts! I used some back in the day and they really started messing with my eyes – in the end it started to feel like I had little metal sheets in my eyes. And that deodorant is hands down the best one I’ve ever used – drug store brands included.
Lisa
Agreed I use the same deodorant, and it’s one of the only ones that doesn’t aggravate my sensitive skin. Even more than natural brands…those tend to make it worse actually.
Sarah @PickyRunner
Thank god for Fridays. This week went by pretty fast though for me at least. I love getting my haircut except I end up regretting it because I like my hair long and it doesn’t grow. Ever. As in, it’s been the same length for years now and I’m afraid to cut it because it’s finally growing. Still obsessed with your shirt, by the way. I’m a big stripes fan 🙂
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, and Beers
Yay, a selfie! Look at yo purdy self. 🙂 Love that top!
I have blue eyes. Neither of my parents do, but both my grandpa’s blessed me with their genes. I know I’m a nerd, but I think genetics are fascinating!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks, lady! And that’s so freakin’ cool about your eyes! I love genetics as well, and actually almost decided to pursue a career in that area. But all the science involved in school… oi.
Dione
You don’t need to boil the vinegar in the kettle, all you have to do is pour some in and let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub. The scale lifts right off! And it won’t taste of vinegar, just wash and rinse.
I get my haircut every eight weeks like clockwork, and coloured every other haircut. Don’t be afraid to cut your hair but maybe don’t go to a pixie right away. I’ve been tempted to do a pixie myself, cause I love Ginnifer Goodwin from Once Upon A Time. I’m not too far off, my hair is pretty far above my shoulders and a few years ago I had hair halfway down my back. Never forget that hair grows!
And again….oh Sephora how I love thee….
Lauren
I have some boring brown/black eyes because they are so dark and I definitely think blue eyes win! I wish I had some mutation eyes 🙁 I’m definitely attached to my hair. I always want to play around with different lengths and things – especially the pixie cuts or bobs – but I know I would end up balling my eyes out for days. It’s hard having long hair your entire life than thinking of getting rid of it. I’ve been thinking about self tanner lately, too, but I have a feeling mine will be the unhealthy kind of tan. Oof.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Brown eyes are beautiful! I have them too 😛 And yup… I’m pretty sure I’d be balling if I cut my hair…
