1. Guys! Remember how last week I complained about my nail polish always chipping ridiculously fast? I think I may have stumbled upon a pretty good solution that doesn’t involve a trip to the the nail salon. Now, I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch, but I’ve been wearing this polish (Revlon Colorstay in Wild Strawberry)…
… for about four days now, and lookit!
Not a chip in sight! And I’ve been putting my nails through some pretty hardcore cleaning/dish washing duties, too. Not bad, eh?
2. And yes, I’m one of those stereotypical Canadian that says “eh?” I do not, however, commute by dog sled (although I probably could with all the snow we’ve been getting), live in an igloo, or enjoy poutine. Maple syrup, on the other hand, I could probably drink straight from the bottle. Not that I’ve tried it before or anything…
3. I went to the store to pick up some toothpaste the other day and came home with this…
Apparently I decided I was running low on some staples. Don’t judge me. Luckily I remembered to actually buy the toothpaste too. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve gone to the store with a specific purchase in mind and left with everything but what I had originally intended to buy. Apparently I’m easily distracted.
4. I probably would have done well to add some new socks to my list of impulse buys too…
Again, don’t judge me – all the good ones were dirty! And don’t act like your socks are better! I don’t believe you.
5. I also don’t believe that replacing the cinnamon in my yogurt messes with cumin would be a good idea. I was making myself a yogurt bowl the other day when I accidentally grabbed the wrong jar of spices…
Luckily I noticed my mistake in the nick of time. I’m all for experimenting with strange food combinations and all, but that’s pushing it a little far, even for me.
6. This may be TMI, but I’m no longer a Healthy Bites virgin! And wow does that sound wildly inappropriate. Nevermind. The point is, these custom cherry vanilla protein bites that Lindsay made for me are out of this world delicious and I highly recommend ordering a batch for yourself. Lindsay is the sweetest person ever to work with, and she’ll make sure to cater to any allergy/dietary needs that you might have.
7. Oh man. Please tell me you guys watched The Land Before Time when you were growing up? And All Dogs Go To Heaven. And The Last Unicorn. And Balto… Childhood nostalgia, right there…
8. This week’s song obsession issss… Oh Yeah! by Siiines. They’re actually a local Edmonton band that I recently came across and took a liking to. Note: video is slightly racy in parts.

9. I was sitting in Starbucks the other day, half listening to the barista call off the orders at the bar, when I noticed that about 90% of them were the skinny version. Now, I know that some of those fancy flavored drinks are pretty high in calories and sugar, but… to be honest… the chemicals and artificial sweeteners in those syrups skeeve the heck out of me. I’ll order a flavored drink every once in a while, but for the most part I keep it pretty simple with a normal latte or cappuccino.
10. Update on my encounter with weight-loss-guru barista: After giving it some thought, I decided to go back to the scene of the crime and talk to the manager about my experience. Not because what she said bothered me, but because I was worried that I wasn’t the only one she’d been giving her ‘advice’ to. I’m thankful to be in a place where comments like that make good blog posts and nothing more, but had that been said to me when I was deeper in my ED, I know it would have resulted in some not-so-pleasant emotional/mental/physical backlash.
Turns out, several other customers complained about her as well and she’s been ‘spoken to.’ Serves her right, I guess? I hope she learns something from it…
. – . – . – .
Do you have a problem with… err… impulse buying?
Have you seen The Land Before Time? What are some of your other favorite childhood movies?
Do you order skinny drinks at Starbucks?
Stephanie
Oh my gosh I never comment on your blog and just passively read.. but you like land before time?? I have the complete collection and used to watch them every day as a kid!
Eating 4 Balance
Land Before Time? Heck yes! How about The Rescuers? Probably my favorite kids movie ever. Or The Aristocats?
Major kudos for going to talk to the manager at Starbucks. I would never have had the guts.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Ohhh! The Rescuers! I can’t believe I forgot that one – definitely on my list of favorites.
Sonia the Mexigarian
Oh man, the spice thing actually DID happen to me. Cumin in my oatmeal: http://www.mexigarian.com/2012/10/24/what-i-ate-wednesday-rainy-day-oatmeal/ It actually turned out pretty good.
I LOVE Land Before Time, Last Unicorn, All Dogs Go to Heaven but I have never seen Balto! Perhaps I am missing something from my childhood? If we’re speaking strictly animated films, have you seen Rock a Doodle? Or The Secret of Nimh? Pretty good films when I was a kid. Oh and Watership Down. Thinking about it now, some of them were very scary to watch as a child. Wow. The scary woman in Last unicorn that gets eaten by the bird? Yeah….. freaked me out.
I completely forget the important item at the store too. I get distracted by shiny things. And I am a horrible impulse buyer. I went to Target two weekends ago to get a few things for a football party and ended up with new sports bras, jeans and a CD. -_-;; I really need to cut up my cards and stick to a cash budget.
Love Canadian terms and accents.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Yes! You’re definitely missing out by not ever having seen Balto – one of the classics for sure. I remember Secret of Nimh, but not Rock a Doodle… does that mean I’m missing out as well? And we’re -just- getting Target here this spring… my wallet is already dreading it 😆
Emily @ Hungry Delights
I find opi nail polish doesn’t chip very much… also their top and bottom coat polish is freakin’ amazing seriously try it out. I have have the same polish on for the last 6 days and it’s only the tips that has worn a little.
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table
Ohhhh… cumin in your yogurt when you expected cinnamon would be strange but NOT good.
Hollie
Since I got a budget app, I’ve become much better with my impluse buying (thank goodness LOL). But anyways, I’ve noticed that with Starbucks too. And everywhere really, when I first found out I was diabetic there were honestly not very many options at those types of p;aces for me…now it’s like everyone orders them. I’m somewhat of a plain coffee person (minus whip cream). I cannot believe that nail polish has been on for so long. I need it for real.
Jo @ LivingMintGreen
I had a skinny peppermint mocha over the holidays expecting to hate it, but it was pretty good! I’m boring when it comes to Starbucks though, I like blonde roasts with a little cream & thats pretty much it. Or an iced green tea. Fav childhood movies: the last unicorn (twins!) labyrinth, ghostbusters, the care bears movie & the little mermaid.
Erin Rose
I have to admit I order the skinny/light drinks in starbucks, but it’s something that I know is eating disorder related so I am challenging it very very soon! 😀 I love the frappaccinos!
That nail varnish colour is gorgeous!
I just want to say that you are a huge inspiration for me, and so I was wondering if you would be interested in looking at my petition and maybe signing it? 😀 I have a post on my blog explaining it all with the link and it’s against the promotion of mental illness on tumblr (such as anorexia)! I’m trying to get as much support as possible so it would be much appreciated! 🙂
Thank you so much for being such an inspiration, even if you didn’t realise it 😛 xxxx
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I tried clicking on the link but couldn’t get to the page. I’ll be sure to try again later 🙂
molly @ heart, sole & cereal
i’m so glad you went back and said something to her! and i’m with you on the skinny thing – it skeeves me out a little but doesn’t really stop me. i need to get over that and just own the damn peppermint mocha if i want one. laughed out loud thinking about you putting cumin in your yogurt bowl. i love me some cumin but…gross 🙂 oh and ps i take back all the bad things i said about cereal…i swear, i didn’t mean it!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Laughing over someone else’s misfortune wouldn’t be a nice thing to do 😛 And girl, how could you be hating on cereal? You’d need to change your blog name!
Liz (formerly VeggieGirl)
Land Before Time = nostalgia alert! Loved that film as a kid 😀
And I love that polish!
P.S. – I’m glad that you talked to the manager about the Starbucks crazy e.d. pusher (that’s what I’ll call her, haha). She needs to suffer the consequences of her dangerous rhetoric.
Katie
LOVE Land Before Time! Oh Anthony and I used to watch those when he was little! Loved!
Yay for no chipping on the nails, never tried revlon since I am an essie whore, but should!
Happy Thursday love!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I like Essie, but it just will NOT stay on my nails. Out of all the polishes I’ve tried, Essie always chips the fastest 🙁
kris
You’re not a fan of cumin flavored yogurt?? That’s okay…I’m not either 😉
ahh I used to watch The Land Before Time alllll the time! And I’d totally forgotten all about All Dogs Go to Heaven! Good times.
Btw, I’m so glad you went back to talk to the manager at the Starbucks. That girls needs someone to set her straight!
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
Oh my gosh. I mix up the cinnamon and cumin EVERY TIME. I put cinnamon in my eggs like 70 times and I put cumin on toast hahaha! Too funny. Story of my life with the store, too. I’m always like oh I just need this… oops.
Missy
Kudos to you for going out of your way and speaking up …. well done. Good deed!
PS- Impulse buying? I am a certified compulsive food shopper and the WORST is when my “one thing” I have to get is dog food real quick after work and I get home with tons of stuff for me and……..yeah. No kibble.
Now that is a LOW feeling I will tell you.
(Don’t worry I go back).
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Maybe you should start buying kibble in the pet store instead – it would probably be a lot harder to come home with tons of stuff for you in that case 😛
Missy
Two Birds!!
Great idea…because then I would have the extra dough to get the good stuff rather than a stockpile of peanut butter, beans, quinoa or whatever else is on sale. (0:
Miss Polkadot
Impulse buys? Me? Nooo … I mean: You better bet so. Granted, I’ve gotten better lately but I still end up with a pretty hefty grocery bill most of the time. It’s so annoying when I forget about what I’d actually been meaning to get, though. Running out of toothpaste? Yes, it happened before.
Sorry but my socks ARE better – but that’s just because I’m not wearing them often. Don’t ask about my tights, though, ahem …
Wait, I’ve never watched any of the movies you mentioned in my childhood. Can I blame not having grown up in Canada? Do I need to make up for it? Favourite childhood movies would include everything based on Astrid Lindgren’s book: Michel, Pippi Longstocking, Lotta, …
Good idea to go back and talk to the Starbucks manager. I hope that girl stops giving “good” advice!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It definitely might be more of a North American thing, but I would recommend checking them out if you’re ever in the mood for watching a kid’s movie 🙂
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
Thanks for the nail polish recommendations. I will definitely have to check that out! And while we are on this topic, I bought nail polish from Forever 21 the other day, and it has actually stayed on longer than some of the more expensive brands that I have tried. Go figure, right?
I always make grocery lists before I go to the store otherwise I will go home with WAY more than I need. A few extras usually sneak into my cart, though ;).
P.s. I love when people say, “eh?” So, keep it up!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh I make lists too… the problem is that I either a) forget them at home, or b) just end up using them as the bare minimum and go on to buy more anyways 😆
lindsay
I christened you! oh, that doesn’t sound good either. LOL! Thank you for sharing the love!
p.s.
I totally would have done what you did, talked to the manager! Good for you! Just a little explanation might help her, yes?
p.p.s
you should see my socks. Horrible holes. I have finger toes.
Nicole
There is absolutely nothing wrong with ordering the skinny version since, yes, many of the full, flavored Sbux drinks are loaded with calories, and a lot of people DO have legit weight problems. I mean, you buy loads of fruit and veggies and low-cal prepared foods, and that is okay, so I think it’s also okay that people go in for a lightened-up treat! 😉
And I definitely have a problem with impulse buying. In fact, most of the time I don’t even really need to buy anything except for one thing maybe, and shopping is sometimes a way for me to waste time. So if I’m not in a rush, you’ll bet I’ll be wandering and browsing and tempted to buy everything I want/like 😀
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I don’t have a problem with lower-calorie options in general, I was just saying that the artificial sweeteners and chemicals are what skeeve me out – a lot of that just goes back to how I grew up, though.
Ksenija @ Health Ninja
Great song, thank you for sharing!
And nice that you spoke to the manager – such a person really should not work in customer service. Those energy balls look really amazing. I just ordered some raw snacks and chocolate today. Curious to find out how they will taste.
btw – Have to look for this nail polish. Made my nails just yesterday and after washing some dishes today they look like it was one week ago -.-
Whitney
I am SO happy you went back and spoke to the manager! Good for you!! 🙂
PS. I wanted to know about the Healthy Bites- have you ever used them while you run as fuel? I was just wondering if they worked well or not.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m not a runner so I’m probably not in the best position to answer that question, but I can say that eating the Bites gives me a nice little boost of energy. I know Lindsay has some that she calls ‘fuel bites,’ which are supposed to give a burst of energy.
Whitney
Thanks for your help! 🙂
Jessica
I’m terrible for impulse buying. I can’t go into a food shop and not buy more than I intended. I suppose that’s how the make their money!
My nails are terrible and have been since I had glandualar fever a while back. They just peel. I find that some nail polish brands stay better on my nails than others. Some are high end, some aren’t – I think it can be your nails changing sometimes. I put the chipping culprits on my toes most of the time so I don’t feel like I’m wasting them. 🙂
That Starbucks girl was super out of line. It’s beyond the realms of her business what people order. I wouldn’t have said anything, probably because I conditioned in the British fashion to not complain, but I think you did the right thing!
Rachel
aww I’m glad you talked to the manager! I’d hate to think she was doing that to everyone who came in. OMG I watched allllllll those movies!! Balto was the best, I need to pick that up haha my Grandma actually had every since Land Before Time movie, so it was always fun going to her house haha
Meghan @ After the Ivy League
So much to comment on. 1. What is your nail polish secret?? 2. At least you remembered the toothpaste, I know I would’ve forgotten it. 3. The Land Before Time!! LOVED that movie, Petey was my favorite. 4. And I’m glad that girl was already spoken to, and that you decided to go back and say something. It really needed to be done, that comment definitely could have been triggering for the wrong person, and she has no right to be “advising” customers in any way, shape, or form.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
No secret on the polish, it’s just the brand. I seriously recommend trying out the Revlon Colorstay polishes if you have a problem with chipping. I love it so much that I’m going back to get some more coors.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
While I don’t live in an igloo or travel anywhere by dogsled, I say ‘eh’, I enjoy maple syrup…..and poutine. 😀 #sorrynotsorry
I’m so glad you talked to the manager! I was actually thinking about this when I was on the treadmill and I was going to send you an email recommending that very thing. Hopefully, all the complaints either a) get her to stop or b) get her fired. I’m not usually one to request someone loses their job but….yea. What she does isn’t acceptable.
And that happens to me all the time with the over-spending…I don’t even know what I’m going to do when Targets open up in Canada in a few months. My wallet is kind of doomed.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Right?! I would say that I’m dreading the fact that the Target being built in our mall is near completion, but that would be a dirty lie. Maybe I should start putting aside money every month so that I have a nice little fund going into it 😆
Laura Agar Wilson (@lauraagarwilson)
Great that you went back to Starbucks and had a word! I bet you feel much better for doing that 🙂 love the pink nail varnish!
Paige @ Your Trainer Paige
We have matching socks 😉
I have gotten much better with my impulse buying. Instead, now I hem and haw for about 5 minutes, and then put it back on the shelf.
Danielle @ Clean Food Creative Fitness
This post was too funny to me! We are a bit too much alike. I always get holes in my socks in the exact same spot! Such a problem with the shopping too. I alway for one thing and end up with way more. At least I’m not alone 😉
Andrea
We haven’t heard much on the ‘Starbucks boy’ front! How are things?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Things are good 🙂 He’s just been away for a while so there hasn’t been much to say on that front. He’ll be coming back this weekend though, thank goodness.
Alex @ therunwithin
dude I am so happy you went back and talked to the manager. You rock, I can’t even imagine how amazing that probably felt. Ok I do that way too often, I go in saying I need one thing I see a sale and wham, I have a handful. Socks are one thing I go through faster than the speed of light. … again great song
sara @ fitcupcaker
I love little bites…thats better than calling them “balls” like I do… I have made a couple different “protein ball” recipes that are awesome too! I think this weekend I am going to make some with dates 🙂
Rebecca@RunningFoodBaby
I say ‘eh’ too – but I do love poutine!!
However I do not wear plaid nor have I ever wrestled a polar bear – actually I’ve never even seen a bear or moose or beaver……
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Never wrestled a polar bear? Ohhh girl, you’re missing out! 😉 It’s one of my favorite weekend past-times.
Liv @ Life As Liv
As someone who used to work at Starbucks, I’m so glad that you said something. I really love that company and they pride themselves on choosing friendly, happy, neighborly baristas. This girl is doing a diservice to the company by being rude to other customers and you totally rock for saying something!!
Khushboo
Ah I’m so glad you went back and spoke to the manager, Amanda- if anything, you have spared at least 1 person from relapsing….such a passing comment like that could really mess with someone’s head! Like you I rarely go for the “fancy” Starbucks drinks…I am most content with my soy cappuccinos. If I am not opting for soy milk, I usually go for the skinny varieties. That being said, I will always go for the regular syrups- I rather do without the chemical-laden sugarfree varieties! And my friend, you are not alone with impulse buying…it’s almost impossible for me to go into a supermarket and walk out with JUST one thing- I truly take after my mom in that department :)!
Lisa
That nail polish is kind of the cutest colour I’ve ever seen! I’m so with you on a normal cappuccino! I’m sorry, but all those chemicals and 0% fat milk satisfy me in no way. Plus, did anyone else notice how when the fat free craze came in, everyone kind of ended up more overweight than we started. Quality over quantity for sure! I’m really happy to hear you went back to the store manager. Typically, that type of situation would make me really anxious, I hate confrontation haha. But, you know what, what she said was really not okay. You’re right! By talking to the manager you could actually help others, who knows what type of emotional situation others would be in if she placed those thoughts in someone’s head! Expect an e-mail this weekend:) P.S. I love all those movies! Haha, kid movies are just awesome.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m mentally psyching myself up for an e-mail… no pressure 😉 But definitely YES to the whole overweight trend seeming to rise with the introduction of a fat-free diet. That’s actually something that I want to look into a bit more, because so many people try to go that route to lose weight and end up majorly struggling… has to be something wrong with that.
Caitlin
I am the queen of impulse buying…I’m at the point now where I just automatically double whatever “budget” I pretend to set for target because it’s just mentally easier to expect to spend the money haha. And omg Balto!!! I loved that movie!! I’m kind of sad you don’t get around by dogsled though…Can’t lie 😉 the land before time always made me sad because of how so many of the dinosaurs lost their parents and then got lost from their guardians but it had a happy ending so i could be bribed to watch it every now and then so my brother got a break from beauty and the beast. Random question: who is your favorite hockey team?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The Edmonton Oilers, of course! Gotta root for the home town boys
Caitlin
haha understandable 🙂
Kat
YES!! Land before time, Balto and The Last Unicorn were my favs!! Oh man I really should watch those oldie but goodies sometime. And girl, if you only knew what my hubs socks look liked. You’d think we were poor!! He has no heels, in any of his socks. Its horrendous!
And I need to try that polish I think. I just painted my nails, and by the end of ONE day they were chipped. What the heck?!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
A lot of my socks don’t have heels either… but those I don’t mind as much as my toes sticking out. And definitely try the polish! I was super skeptical, but now I’m just kind of amazed. I have to go back and get more colors!
the delicate place (@misathemeb)
good for you! i think i would have been too stunned from the barista to say anything initially but after some thought would have done the same! i never order any skinny drinks…i either order hot tea if it’s night time OR an americano with a splash of soy milk mmmmm 🙂
Jess
Ah, I’ll always go for the lowest calorie option of anything. Although all of the syrups are too sweet for me, including the SF ones. I can understand why people would want the ‘skinny’ version of things – it all depends what place you’re in with your weight and approach towards food. It’s still hard for me to resist Pepsi Max having gone for years drinking 2-3 litres (!) of it per day, so I’m not going to beat myself up over artificial sweeteners.
I’m not much of an impulse buyer because it’s safer for me to stick to my list – if I buy too many things on intuition I’ll want to ‘try’ them all at once (and by ‘try’ I mean scoff the lot).
Oh God, those are all of my childhood movies right there, apart from the Disney ones (early childhood anyway) like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast (which are better than The Lion King IMO). All Dogs scarred me for life, as did The Last Unicorn. I absolutely cried my eyes out at parts of both (and still do) and I made up alternative endings for both when I was little because I couldn’t stand how they turned out (overactive imagination – I drew storyboards for them and everything). When I was a little older (nine or ten) I outgrew most cartoons and became obsessed with Edward Scissorhands and Tim Burton’s Batman – I must have seen both over fifty times.
xxx
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I definitely understand the reasoning behind the skinny versions… I think I just tend to shy away from them because that’s how I was raised. My mom’s always been pretty health-conscious, so I grew up hearing about the potential negative effects of artificial sweeteners and I guess it just stuck.
Sarah @PickyRunner
I’m glad you went back and stood up for yourself and tried to help out other people. That’s the right thing to do. Also, I have the same problem when I go to the grocery store, except I end up forgetting what I was supposed to buy… it’s a problem.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh I definitely know it is – that happens to me about 85% of the time, so the toothpaste was a huge accomplishment.
debbie
please, girl, at least your socks match.
