Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!
1. Hi, hello, and good morning/afternoon/evening from Ohio!
. . .
Alright, that’s a total lie. I’m currently writing this in the air en route to Ohio, hoping I get there soon because I really need to pee and I hate having to use the bathroom on airplanes. Not only do I start feeling a little claustrophobic in there, but I have straight up fears of hitting bad turbulence and getting splashed with all manner of unsavoury things. And yes — I know that’s not even remotely possible — but since when do irrational fears have to make sense?
2. On a less nasty note, this is my first time travelling with nothing but a carry-on, and I’m honestly not sure I’ll ever be able to go back to checking luggage again. Not only did packing feel so much less stressful, but being able to zip around without dragging a monster suitcase behind me is just glorious. Totally smitten.
3. And speaking of first times… today was the first time I actually set my alarm clock in… years??… and it’s probably a good thing I don’t have to do this on a regular basis because…
Fail. Waking up at 4:15pm wouldn’t have helped me get to the airport by 6am. It’s a good thing I was too excited to sleep and kept waking up every hour anyways π
4. That being said, the lack of sleep is starting to take its toll, and while I’d like to go get myself a cup of coffee, the lineup at Starbucks just keeps getting longer and longer… For coffee, though? I might be willing to wait.
5. Oh, and in case you’re wondering how I went from being afraid to pee on the plane in #1 to watching the lineup in Starbucks in #4, it’s because I’m writing this in snippets throughout the day, depending on whenever I get a chance to sit down and actually pull out my computer. At the moment, I’m hanging out in the Minneapolis airport, waiting to board my last flight to Cleveland. Hi.
6. So it took me a minute to figure out why Minneapolis sounded so familiar, and it’s because I was here for Healthy Living Summit all the way back in 2013. That was the first time I actually met other bloggers in person, and probably what made me want to take the whole blogging thing more seriously. Good times.
7. Aaaaand speaking of good times, I just landed in Cleveland, so I’m going to go ahead and say that’s probably it for me for today. I never quite mastered the whole ‘blog while traveling’ thing, so while I might be scarce for the next couple of days, I’ll see your lovely faces next week!
8. Wait! Before I go, I wanted to quickly mention a linkup that Meg is bringing back starting next week. It’s called Week In Review, and it’s based around the idea of celebrating accomplishments, no matter how big or small they are. You can check out an example here, and definitely show her some love by linking up on Monday!
No questionsβ¦ just tell me whatever comes to your mind! π

Have a safe trip! Are you going to pick up some American goodies while you’re in the states? π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Not this time, no — the whole lack of bag space, thing π I did make sure to fill up on lots of Chipotle while I was there, though π
Jade
Oh my gosh! I’m glad you were too excited to sleep so you didn’t miss your flight. That sounds like a mistake I would make.
Jen @ Chase the Red Grape
Hope you have a fantastic time with Meghan! Always good to get away for a few days and spend some time away from online craziness and just have fun with friends π
Sky @ Blonde Freedom
Enjoy your time in Ohio!! I have yet to pack for a trip and fly in just a carry on, but have been meaning to try it! I think I would never want to pack a full suitcase again.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Defnitely give it a shot! It’s nowhere near as bad as you think packing-wise, and it’s SO nice not to have so much stuff to cart around.
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Healthy Kitchen
Heyyy I see my face lol!
Have an awesome time with Meg – I’m super jealous. We need to make plan sto all meet up again, since last fall didn’t work out for me. π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
We do! I vote for a Rocky Mountain meet up π
alex d
I do that with my iPhone alarm more times than I care to admit. haha. I finally gave in and just have it set for the same time every day so I don’t have to mess with it every night. And I completely agree about the carry on – such less of a hassle! Enjoy your trip!
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
Ahhhh have so much fun!! I wish I could join you guys, but you know…no roadtrips for a while π
I’ve never done the carry-on only thing, but I think just avoiding baggage fees would make me want to try it.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Wish you were there too! We need a Blend repeat. And seriously give the carry-on thing a try — it’s nowhere near as bad as you think packing-wise, and not having so much stuff to cart around is super liberating.
Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health
Yay! You’re coming to the U.S.!! I just read in your currently post that you’re visiting Meg. Sounds like so much fun! I bet there will be lots of #publicbananas LOL!
I hope you made it there safe and I can’t wait to hear more about your trip!
Kaila @healthyhelperblog!
Have fun! What brings you to Cleveland!?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Meg π Just a trip to visit and spend some time with her.
Kaitlin
I am such a fan of carry on. After my bags were left in Newark over the holidays (thankfully located and shipped the next day…still minor scare) I will try to carry on as much as possible!
Shannon
Have fun in Ohio! Bringing a carry on is so much easier! No baggage claim, so fears of lost luggage! AHHH so much better.
Shawna
i’m always a carry-on only girl as well, as of the past 5-6 years. it’s totally changed traveling and made me so much more of an efficient packer! i haven’t been to Minneapolis for any extended amount of time that i can recall, but i’ve heard it’s a sweet city with a cool, artsy vibe. def want to check it!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m thinking that this is the beginning of a new carry-on relationship for me. I have a tendency to overpack (and not use 80% of what I pack), so forcing myself to use a smaller bag has been a blessing. Now to master the art π
Aubrey
Oh, I loved her week review posts. Glad she’s bringing it back:)!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Me too!
heather
I hate to fly. I could not use the bathroom either. Starbucks sounds like what I need right now and I have no way to go. Have a good trip

I’ll be in Ohio (not Cleveland) in 10 days for work. Yay? Hahaha.
I suuuuck at blogging when I’m out of town, but I do try to get as much written while I’m on planes π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I manage to get a few things penned while flying, but my last flight was SO cramped, that I couldn’t even get my laptop out on the little table π―
Brianna
Safe travels! I can never sleep the night before I travel either, so I’m always up way early. I usually don’t set alarms (blogger life for the win), but then some days I end up sleeping in longer than expected.
My husband travels every week with just a carry on. I haven’t quite figured out how to pack that small yet π

I do the same thing the night of a big trip – even if Im NOT excited about it! Its just an anxiety thing that comes with traveling I guess!
And I hate planes, so I dont like using the restroom either, but this girl has the bladder of a tiny pea, so I rarely get to avoid it.
Safe travels my friend!
Emily
Wow, I completely resonate with your feelings about airplane bathrooms. ;-D
I hope you have a great vacation, or if it’s not a vacation, I hope it’s a fantastic, business trip? And boy, the setting the alarm for PM instead of AM. I have done that SO many times.
Ellen @ My Uncommon Everyday
Even though I regularly wake up early enough not to need alarms, I also set them for travel (just in case), but then I’m inevitably way too excited to sleep before a trip. Fortunately, I can usually squeeze in a nap on the plane. Have fun in Cleveland! My aunt lives there and a few of my friends go to school there – it’s a fun city! Ohio is my home, though, so I might be biased π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I really liked it there! Ohio was definitely a lot prettier than I expected, and Cleveland was tonnes of fun.
Runwright
I agree traveling with carry-in luggage only is liberating! Enjoy your trip!
Mar @ Mar on the Run
I got my packing prowess from my dad. He traveled a lot for work and was so neat in his packing game. Unless I’m driving it’s one carry-on for me! It’s really like an art form. Enjoy your trip!
Morgan @ Morgan Manages Mommyhood
Have fun on your trip! I have definitely set my alarm for PM before, but now I’m pretty careful about it because I’ve done it a few times.. experience, right? Once I did it when I was setting the alarm for my husband to wake up for work.. oops.
Fran@BCDC
I love traveling with only carry-on. Unfortunately, some people don’t follow the rules. That could be an Entire Thinking Out Loud post! Anyway, enjoy your time in Cleveland with the lovely Meghan. Personally I’m excited to be back joining in with TOL and I’m looking forward to the return of Week In Review. Have my lists working already. Have a great time!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s good to have you back, Fran! I was wondering where you disappeared to…
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More
First of all…the line at Starbucks at the airport is worth it. The line at other coffee places at the airport, not always (I learned this the hard way traveling back from NYC last month).
Second, have a great trip!! Don’t you just love visiting blogging friend?! I get to do it next weekend and I’m STOKED!
Third, while I love not checking a bag and the hassle that comes with that, I love not having a little shadow through the airport that I have to somehow maneuver into the bathroom stall with me. Of course it’s worth saving the money on checked baggage, but still. That’s my 2 cents. π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Yeaaaah having to drag the little carry-on around is definitely a pain, and the whole bathroom thing can be a bit of a nightmare, but it’s a blast walking past all the people waiting to pick up their bags on the belt and being out of the airport before anyone else π
Julie @ Running in a Skirt
I’m a terrible packer, but if I’m going for less than a week on a plane I do try to fit it into the rolly bag! Much easier in summer than winter! Hello boots!
Hope you are having a great time!
Heather@hungryforbalance
I am jealous of your ability to travel with only a carry on! I’m a compulsive over-packer and almost always end up with at least 2 bags. It’s a good thing I don’t fly often!
I hope you have a great time!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That’s usually me as well, but I find that if I -force- myself to use a smaller bag, it becomes a lot easier to make it work. I’m honestly not sure I could ever go back!
Erin@BeetsPerMinute
I am so with you on plane toilets. Ugh. I have a panic attack every time I have to use one, I am SO claustrophobic! I’ve also only traveled once with just a carry-on, it’s so hard to do now, though, with all the liquid restrictions, etc! It certainly was a joyous event not having to deal with the baggage claim (or weight)! Have a great time! π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I was actually worried about the liquid/cream/gel restrictions as well (hi makeup/toiletries!), but I didn’t have any issues at all. You can buy those little travel container packs now that make things so much easier.
Kelsey
I think it has been quite some time since I’ve checked luggage… I usually go the carry-on route, and feel it just makes the whole experience so much easier! Have a fun trip!
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious
Traveling with a carry on is so much less stressful than checking luggage except for when you have to fight for bin space because everyone does it and they bring more than 2 things like they’re supposed to. Can you tell I was a consultant for a long time? Have fun in Ohio!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Aww! I was actually worried about that as well, but I got lucky and didn’t run into any issues on my -FOUR- flights. Dang layovers.
Marcia
No checked bags is the way to go. Unless you’re like me and you leave your carry-0n on the TSA scanner belt.
Susie @ SuzLyfe
My mother in law once checked a suitcase when they were visiting us FOR ONE NIGHT. I kid you not.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy
Enjoy your trip!
My biggest problem with just a carry on is that I need a bag for the food I bring. Yes, I’m one of those. It’s really hard to find a healthy breakfast while traveling!
I once brought just a carry on for a week to Paris. But that was also pre-running – that’s one of my other problems! Half my clothes are running clothes!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I brought a carry-on and a backpack, so most of my food and snacks went into the backpack. If I couldn’t have that second bag, though, I’d be in trouble.
Miss Polkadot
Thr first thought on my mind: I’m not happy at all missing ToL the second week in a row but my laptop is fussy so no chance to get my post up. Then again, it usually works well at night which would mean it adopted my rhythm – that’s what I get for being a night owl ;).
Have lots of fun in Cleveland! I’d tell you to say hi to Meg from me but I already told her to say hi to you so that would be weird.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Aww computer problems are the worst! Hope you get them figured out soon, lady!
meredith @ Cookie ChRUNicles
Have the greatest time and say hi to Meg for me π Next trip for you is to NY, ok?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That’s definitely the plan! It might have to wait until warmer weather, though π
Michele @ paleorunningmomma
I am not good at blogging when away either – have an amazing time!
Liz S.
CLEVELAND?!?! Um, you’re in my area, hahaha.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Whaaa?!!? I had no idea! And now I’m kicking myself for not looking at my comments sooner π₯
