Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!
1. I had a mini freak out for a second there because I thought today was Friday and that I missed ToL ๐ฏ My days have been all sorts of messed up ever since I left for vacation, and it looks like even staring at calendars and planners multiple times a day isn’t doing much to help. But at least I’m not jet lagged! I thought I would be because of the 4 hour time difference, but apparently it’s a lot easier on your body to travel west, so I haven’t had any trouble going to sleep and waking up at my normal times. Hooray!
Also… no one comment about how much tanner my mom is than me. I swear I’m not as pale as I was!
2. And hooray for managing to unpack my entire suitcase in one day! It usually takes me a good week or so to get through the entire thing, but I emptied that sucker on Tuesday only to discover a pretty decent amount of sand lining the bottom. And that’s my biggest problem with the beach — the fact that sand gets everywhere. I definitely enjoyed playing around in the ocean while I was out there, but I prefer that sand stays on the beach and out of my shorts and bathing suit… *shudder*
3. This is why I’ll always be a mountain girl at heart and why I’ll be heading up there this weekend to do some snowboarding *happy dance* It’s been over a month since the last time I was able to go thanks to my back wonking out on me right before my last trip, so I’m really looking forward to going up there and doing some riding. And yes, it’s basically the polar opposite of where I just was, but it’s my favourite place in the world…
4. Oh! I forgot to mention that I found Wilson! So in case you were worried about him after he abandoned ship in Cast Away and floated off into the ocean, you can sleep soundly knowing that he made it to Maui and is living it up on a whale watching and snorkelling boat. Lucky guy…
5. Speaking of movies… has anyone seen Insurgent yet? I didn’t even know it came out in theatres until I heard it mentioned on the radio, and I was kind of disappointed to see it get such bad reviews. I’ll probably wait until it comes out on DVD, which really has nothing to do with the bad reviews and everything to do with the fact that I fail at going to see movies in the theatre. In fact, I can’t even recall the last one I watched on the big screen… But I did catch Interstellar [on a tiny screen] on my flight over to Maui! I thought it was fantastic, but I’m going to need someone to explain the ending to me ๐ฏ
6. And because I really want to share some more whale watching pictures…
7. And a picture of my puppy [who’s not really a puppy] since I didn’t get a chance to see her on National Puppy Day…
8. Also, Starbucks has gone to the birds… And that wasn’t even half of them!
9. So you know when you use a really great smelling shampoo or conditioner in your hair and you’re treated to random wafts of the scent throughout the day? The same can be said of not-so-great smelling products. I love what the R&B hair moisturizer from Lush does to my hair, but I just can’t with the smell. I put it on 8 hours ago and I can still smell it. Save.me.
10. So I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted a recipe for you guys, and I promise that I’ll be getting back to it. I decided to ease up this month since I was travelling and I was starting to feel a little burnt out, but the recipes will be back on Spoons asap. In the meantime, you can check out this Creamy Carrot Cake Smoothie that I posted over on Savory Style!

That carrot cake smoothie looks amazing! It is going to be 92 degrees here today!.!. I cannot even comprehend this weather. I need a smoothie now!! ๐
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Send some of the warmth my way! We’re still hovering around freezing and it’s super cloudy!
ganeeban
Now I understand my Mom’s obsession with going to Maui just for the whale watching. Those pics are gorgeous! xoxo, ganeeban
Emma @ Life's A Runner
I think it is so sad how terrible the Divergent movies have been so far. I absolutely loved the books, but the films just feel like a wannabe / low budget Hunger Games.
I’m just glad that my facial scrub from LUSH doesn’t smell like vodka. Because…that’s in there. ๐
Emma @ Em-powered Wellness
Wow those whale watching pictures are incredible! Looks like an amazing vacation ๐
Jo @ Living Mint Green
Mama Spoons is so beautiful!! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed your trip to Maui… I hope to experience it soon and I’m fairly certain it would become my new favorite island. I wonder if the islands each have their own vibe? Are you guys going to head back to Hawaii again next year? Big Island??? ๐
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
They definitely have their own vibe! Oahu was a little too commercialized for me, and Kauai was a little too quiet. I found Maui to be the best of both worlds, and it had a really laid back and chill vibe. Loved it. And if we -do- decide to go back to the islands next year, I’m pretty sure that Big Island will be next! I’m kind of hoping the volcano will still be active so I can see some of that ๐
stacy @ Sweating TulipZ
Those pictures from whale watching are spectacular!
Jet lag is the worst…so glad you don’t have it! It is hard enough to stay on a routine after vacation, add in het lag and it takes a good week to get on track! I HAVE to unpack my suitcase as soon as I am in the door. I can’t stand living out of a suitcase!
This carrot cake smoothie looks amazing!
Cassie @ Almost Getting it Together
Literally the last movie I saw in theaters was Gone Girl with Angela… I really want to go to a movie soon haha! I want to see Insurgent… and Intersettelar!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
OHHH Good call! I think that was the last one I saw as well!
Leah M @ love me, feed me
That picture of you and your mom is too cute! Is it weird that I know exactly which Starbucks that is in Maui?? Hahah! So glad you had a wonderful time!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Not weird at all considering finding a Starbucks nearby was near the top of my vacation to-do list ๐
MCM Mama Runs
I’m definitely a mountain person. I can’t stand the way sand sticks to everything LOL.
Sounds like you’ve been busy!
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West
Welcome back to the real world! And carrot cake anything sounds good to me! ๐
Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola
That is too funny about that LUSH hair moisturizer. I thought all of their stuff was supposed to smell good?!
Ang @ Nutty for Life
I use R&B too but I actually love the smell, haha. At first it’s overpowering but I’ve had multiple people tell me my hair smells so good!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Whaaaat?! No fair! Maybe I got a bad batch…
Shashi at RunninSrilankan
Ok -so is it just me or do you look a lot like your mom (don’t hate me, but I thought she was your cousin as I know you don’t have a sis)?
I saw Insurgent and I must be part of the minority as I really liked it! It wasn’t exactly like the book – but it wasn’t dragged out like Mockingjay part 1 was either – at least, that’s my two cents.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
We -do- look a lot alike, eh? People actually ask us all the time if we’re sisters or cousins, especially when I wear my hair up! And when I look at pictures of her from when she was my age, it’s like I’m looking at myself…
Sarah @pickyrunner
Your mom is SO tan!!! Super jealous. Your hawaii pictures have me dreaming of a tropical vacation to just about anywhere. I’m with you on the sand though. That’s what I loved about living on my boat for so long. I didn’t have to deal with the sand but I had all the same benefits of the ocean. It was the best of both worlds. The less sand that sticks around, the better. I’ve been wanting to see Interstellar for awhile– I need to watch it!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Totally unfair, right? And you’d think I’d have her awesome ability to tan considering we share the same genes, but nope! They have some pretty nice harbours in Maui… would definitely be an awesome place to live on a boat ๐
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment
Love the pictures from you trip! Looks amazing. Hawaii is at the top of my list to visit!
Amy @ Mama Running for God
Love the photos of the whales! Makes me want to jump on a plane! We saw Insurgent Tuesday night and I thought it was really good. My son (16) said it was too predictable, but I read the books and I still enjoyed it. Yes, they strayed from the book, but I thought it was still very well done. I was bummed that it got such bad reviews. I am looking forward to Alligent coming out. I heard they are making the last one into 2 films. That seems to be the trend now.
Glad you’re home and that your days are getting back on track!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m actually really curious about Allegiant as well. I wasn’t -too- crazy about the book, so I’m interested to see how they adapt it to the big screen!
Jen @ Pretty Little Grub
I try to make it my mission to unpack my suitcase the second I come home from vacation otherwise it will sit there for weeks. The sand truly is the worst though. There is no getting away from it, it is everywhere!
Suzy
Ha ha ha ha ha… I love what Susie wrote about sex on the beach. She’s hilar. Oddly, my favourite pic is the one of the birds at Starbucks. I LOVE sitting outside on the patio on a summer morning and being surrounded by those birdies!
Cat
That’s quite an impressive number of animals you’ve got in one post! Yeah snap on Interstellar – great film but anything with time travel/bending just blows my mind beyond comprehension. Those films need explanations after the credits!
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job
I went to the Maldives for my honeymoon and expected to be the tannest person ever. I think as I get older it is becoming harder for me to tan as deeply as I did when I was younger. I barely tanned at all!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Me too! It takes me -forever- to get a tan… especially if I want to avoid burning. My mom has no problem with it, though *jealous*
Jess
What a pretty smoothie : )
Chelsea
Soo glad that you had a lovely trip ๐
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out
Ha I’m the same way! I can never unpack in one day– it’s the worst!
Kelly @ Kelly Runs For Food
I have to unpack the minute I walk in the door. I would totally pick the beach over mountains, but I’m glad you’re able to snowboard again.
Also, I thought Interstellar was an awesome movie!
Alyssa @ Renaissancerunnergirl
Keep those gorgeous Hawaii pictures coming! I went on a whale watch in Provincetown, MA in 5th grade…we drove up there and back in one day and I spent most of the day leaning against the rail in the rain craning for a sighting of one whale tail in a storm! Your version is way prettier ๐
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Maui is pretty epic for whale watching! We went on two separate cruises and had awesome views both times. The whales like going there just as much as we do ๐
Carson
Sooooo jealous of your whale watching adventures!!!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine
I am loving all of your pictures from Hawaii! I would like to go back right about now! i had a really hard time adjusting to the time change when I came back.
I need to unpack my suitcase as soon as I get back from a trip! My husband basically lives out of his suitcase and never really unpacks until the next time we go away, and I have no idea how he can do that! I get so disorganized and feel like I can’t find anything!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m always so envious when it comes to guys and travelling — they seem to have it so much easier than us ladies! And don’t even get me started about having to deal with long hair on the beach…
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder
The whale watching pics are so cool! I’d love to see whales in the wild. I’m hoping to go on a trip to do that when I visit Seattle later this year. I’d also love to snowboard. Or ski. Mountains are really appealing to me. I love in Florida so a) I’ve never seen them and b) I’m not much of a beach person either. Sand is gritty and. Nasty.
Jen @ Chase the Red Grape
Oh my goodness you and your mum are so alike! Very pretty!
I love seeing all your pics from your hols, it just looked so beautiful… And whale watching must have been so breathtaking!
I wish our starbucks had some outdoor seating would be lovely in the sunshine and I don’t even mind sharing the space with some cute looking birds! as long as the pidgeons and seagulls stay away! :-S
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Aww thanks, lady! I’ll let my mom know what you said ๐
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious
I think you look tan. There’s something about a Hawaii tan. You glow and have a bright hue. Am I the only one that believes that?
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
I love seeing Mama Spoons. Send her hugs, puppies and unicorn sparkles from me.
I’m still amazed by the whale watching and reconnecting with Wilson. All those tears I shed while watching Castaway were wasteful now I know he’s ok.
Confession: I’ve never read the Divergent series. Oops. Maybe if I ever finish my current book, I’ll start it next. Then again, my book list is loooong, which is a good problem to have.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Done and done! And I’m hoping that Name Of The Wind is on your list and that you’ll be reading it soon!! Because that’s probably one of my favourite books of all time…
Susie @ SuzLyfe
I love love love the ocean but I HATE sand. Unless I am getting a spa treatment, I just don’t want to deal with it! I guess I am just going to have to get over that before I have children and they have sandboxes… Also, whoever though that sex on the beach was a good idea obviously never did so….
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
๐ ๐ That’s actually something I always think about when I’m on the beach. I mean… that’s just risking getting sand in places you REALLY don’t want it to go…
Lucie@FitSwissChick
Unpacking the suitcase within one day is pretty amazing. Congrats ๐
Love the pic of you and your Mom, you guys are gorgeous!!
I am in the mountains right now, but unfortunately it’s raining, so I stay inside which is ok for me too. Rest is needed!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I actually love cloudy and rainy days in the mountains! They just feel so mysterious and cozy ๐ Miss you, lady! See you in less than 2 MONTHS!!
Michele @ paleorunningmomma
I love the picture of you and your mom! Actually I’m really loving all your pictures. It’s putting me in a good mood to start my day! Honestly sand in a suitcase only makes me happy ๐
Jessica @ kiwiyogirunner
Ahhh Wilson!!! I cried so bad when Wilson floated out to sea! And I never usually cry in movies ๐ฎ I have just started reading the divergent series! ๐
meredith @ Cookie ChRUNicles
In the winter I bring home the salt and sand from the snowy mess outside and in the summer, I am forever dealing with the beach that comes home on our feet and in our beach bags. Especially from my son, it’s the worst! He literally brings the beach home with him.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I dunno how I’d deal with sand at home. It’s bad enough having to deal with the pebbles and salt from winter, but I feel like sand is worse because it’s so much finer and harder to pick up!
Brynn
I thought today was Friday for a few hours yesterday, ha! I want to see Insurgent because I really enjoyed the books, but I heard the same thing about the movie. I still may go because I love going to the movies that much!
Arman @ thebigmansworld
Awkward, that’s not a whale. That’s Niki.
I am impressed. The slopes this weekend after a jetlagged return? You’re epic. Now as for that smoothie…..I wonder if your blender still likes you..
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Niki was in Hawaii?! You should have told me! I would have loved to meet her ๐
