Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!
1. This song, though…
[youtube=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TwGTeFkjEg&w=576&h=315″]
I’ve been playing it in the background while working on the computer lately, and it’s the perfect song to just zone out and write/edit to. Please don’t ask me how many times I’ve played it on repeat… it’s slightly embarrassing. And there I go misspelling embarrassing again. Eff.
2. So Target is packing its bags and heading south for the winter good. Apparently us Canadians didn’t take too kindly to it, so Target is pulling the plug and leaving Canada “after 22 months of multi-million dollar losses.” I feel so bad for all the workers who are losing their jobs, but I honestly can’t say I’m surprised. I remember being super excited when I first heard that Target was finally coming to Canada, only to be disappointed after discovering that it was basically a poor man’s version of the stores in the States. You guys get all the good stuff down there…
3. Has anyone else noticed the days getting so much (read: a little) longer? It used to be pretty dark out by 4 PM, but now I can still see traces of the sun around 6. Spring is coming, friends… spring is coming.
4. And it’s a good thing, too. I don’t know about you guys, but the February funk is starting to set in, and while it no longer gets as bad as it did in past years, I’m still ready for warmer days. Or at least brighter ones. I think it’s mostly the lack of sun that does me in, especially when we’re dealing with a week straight of white/grey/gloomy days. Time to up that vitamin D intake. It helps. It really does.
5. On another health-related note… I’ve been getting a lot of questions about health coaching, my experience at IIN, and my current studies with CSNN. I’m planning to put together a post about it soon, so let me know if there are any specific questions you want answered!
6. The question I want answered is… what the heck is on this disk?
Remember floppy disks?!? I came across one with my name on it while going through some old boxes the other day, and I want to know what kind of treasures are on it. Do they even make computers that can read these things these days? Because my laptop doesn’t even take CDs π I’m curious to see what I was hoarding in what I’m guessing was back in the 90’s…
7. Speaking of the 90’s… I got the biggest kick out of this article on Buzzfeed titled: “19 Frustrating Things Today’s Kids Will Never Experience.” Who remembers actually having to develop camera film? And making mix tapes? And Napster? And Encarta? And VHS tapes? And pay phones? Kids these days… they’re missing out.
8. If you ever write me a text and/or e-mail and I don’t get back to you for a while, it’s because I’ve answered you in my head and overlooked the fact that I didn’t actually answer you in real life. I apologize. It’s the old age getting to me π
9. While we’re on the topic of text messages, I decided to take a look at my emoji keyboard the other day, and these were my most frequently used smilies. Of course a banana would be on there. Of course it would.
10. Oh! And before I forget… Remember how I mentioned that dry skin has been the bane of my existence lately? I’ve found something new that might actually be helping…
It’s the Ultra Repair Cream from First Aid Beauty. I’ve been using it for a little over a week now and I’ve been liking the results. I’m not the biggest fan of the smell (it’s kind of herbal/medicine-y), but I’ll deal with the smell if it’ll keep dealing with my dry hands. Check it out if you’re at your wit’s end!
No questionsβ¦ just tell me whatever comes to your mind! π

FLOPPY DISK!!! Hahahah that’s so bomb!!!!
Wow, we’ve come a long way!
Marnie @ SuperSmartMama
Ooh another positive review for First Aid Beauty! I might have to check it out sometime soon…
And I was watching the news about the shutdown of Target in Canada and wondering what went wrong; you’re comment sums it up I guess!!
Angela @ HonestlyAngela
#8 β¦ I do it all the time! I am so bad at actually getting back to people, but same as you, I do get back to them in my head, I just forget to actually send them the message. Oops!
I know Target wasn’t nearly as great in Canada as the States, but I still liked it and I am sad it is closing. I think I only went a handful of times while it was open, but when I went, I always found something.
Lauren @ ihadabiglunch
I can’t believe Target failed! I can’t imagine it failing anywhere it goes because it’s such a huge Staple here haha. When I studied abroad in France I remember feeling so lost because there as no hub like Target where I could get all my “stuff.” Is there something like Target where you’re from or is it like France, where there are a lot more small specialty stores so you have to make more trips to get all your essentials?
That floppy disk! How mysterious! I feel like that could be the beginning of a new primetime drama haha — “what’s on the disk?!”
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Well we have things like Walmart, and a lot of our grocery stores sell all of the essentials too. I think the biggest problem was that a lot of the brands and products that were available in American Targets weren’t legally allowed to be sold here, so it left us with a fraction of the supply that you guys get down there.
Sarah @ Sarah's on the Run
The Buzzfeed article is the best. And did you see Jimmy Fallon reunite the cast of Saved by the Bell last night? too perfect.
Becky @ Olives n Wine
Oh man, Target definitely struggled up in Canada-land. I think the international thing put them in a hard position… They wanted to provide the same experience as here in the states but half of the brands/types of items weren’t allowed to be legally sold in Canada. They should have done more research before entering a new market!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I know π Was so sad to see that so many things from American Target weren’t in the Canadian ones. That and they kind of came in with too much gusto. I think they opened over 100 stores all at once? Maaaaaybe a tad bit too ambitious.
Julie @ Running in a Skirt
I found my old blockbuster card the other day π And the last store closed in our town years ago! Booo! I have a stash of floppy disks somewhere too… I will probably never know.
Renee @ Bendiful Blog
Floppy Disks!!! YESSSSSssss Oh man I just found a bunch of those the other day I would love to know what’s on them. That sucks about target I didn’t realize they were different than the ones here.
EVA
Haha I totally read that Buzzfeed article a couple of days ago, and oh man it really brought back some struggles! RIP Blockbuster, but it had screwed me over one too many times when I wanted a new release but all the shelves were completely wiped. Bahaha! And a BAD Target?! Holy shit….now I’ve heard it all….
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Do you know how long it took me to figure out where to rent movies from after Blockbuster shut down? Un.real.
EVA
Oh my god….we had a whole year plus where we either bit the bullet and took a chance buying a movie or didn’t watch anything at all. It sounds so spoiled as it’s such a first world problem, but I mean what 90’s kid DIDN’T look forward to that weekly trip to Blockbuster?!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More
I love how the fist is one your most used emojis, it’s definitely one of mine too! That and the flexing bicep! π
Annette@ FitnessPerks
Haha, that list of the 90s! I remember all to well the annoyance of the movie I wanted not being at Blockbuster!!
Jen @ Bagels to Broccoli
..speaking of songs, EVERYTIME I hear that “Thinking Out Loud” song I always think of you, obvi. Can’t remember who sings it for the life of me.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
π It’s Ed Sheeran… and I feel like I’ve been noticing it a lot more lately too!
Lizzy
That disc!! I hope you’re able to find a computer to look at it on.
I think that list about 90’s things needs to includes pagers. So many kids at my school had them, but they do practically nothing! and then you had to run and track down a phone to try to call someone back. So annoying.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
π I remember pagers. I always wondered what the point was… It’s like Dark Ages texting.
Shashi at RunninSrilankan
Lol – that Buzzfeed list is hilarious – Oh – if you ever need a VHS player – guess what I found under my bed!?
I am so looking forward to your post on health coaching – I don’t have any questions – just very curious about natural/holistic approaches to nutrition and wellness in general.
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment
I love the ultra repair cream. I use it on my face every night. The smell is fairly minimal so it does not bother me. Have a great Thursday!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve been thinking about trying it on my face, and I’ve heard people do it with good results, but I keep putting it off because my skin is super picky. Might have to give it a go…
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out
haha very similar to my frequently used emojis! have to have some food on there!
Erin @ The Almond Eater
#8 is me every.single.day–it’s becoming a problem. And those “things kids these days won’t understand” are so funny. A read the whole list a few weeks ago and lollllled because they’re so true.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine
I am the queen of playing my favorite song on repeat. I usually end up overplaying it and getting sick of it! Luckily there isn’t anything right now. I’ve just been playing my “recently played” playlist on iTunes and thats worked well enough.
Brynn
So sad that Target didn’t live up to it’s name and now has to close its doors. On another note, YES to First Aid Beauty!
Angie @ LoveTheRunning
Aw I’m sorry your Target wasn’t nice. That makes me sad because I LOVE Target in the states. I’m also totally excited it’s staying lighter out later! I run after work a lot and it was light until like 6:10 the other day!!!! Us Michiganders definitely seem ready for Spring this year π
Hollie
I cannot believe Target is shutting down up there. It obviously makes sense since they were losing money, but wow. It just goes to show different countries and regions really excel (or don’t) in different things.
My most used emoji keyboard is rather comical actually. It is constantly changing but I swear I use emojis more than actual text.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Remember back in the day when emojis didn’t even exist? And you had to go the : ) route? Good times.
Andrea @ Pencils and Pancakes
I started taking vitamin D a couple of weeks ago and I swear I’m noticing a difference too!
Susie @ SuzLyfe
Maybe the secrets to Targets Canada’s financial troubles is on that disk! I could be a disk from the past for the future!!!
Kate @ Baking in Yoga Pants
I love seeing the emojis you use the most! I had to take a glance at mine after looking at yours. I’d be seriously upset if Target went away, but it sounds like your Targets weren’t quite the same experience. You can always visit ours when you’re here π
AJ @ NutriFitMama
Oh wow, how disappointing about Target! I LOVE it here in the states, but had no idea it was different other places. I guess I just assumed..and we all know we shouldn’t just assume! I agree about the vitamin d intake..I am starting to really get the winter blues here (in our pathetic excuse for a winter compared to most places! But it’s still hard for me since I am used to living in southern CA!) and cannot wait until spring and longer days!
Kathy @thepandapost
Can we also add paper maps to that list? Seriously? Before portable GPS or even MapQuest you actually had to know where you were going before you left LOL
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
π Omg I remember my parents getting into arguments on our family road trips because of maps. So I’m kind of happy to see those things gone…
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious
That is crazy about Target leaving Canada. I’m eagerly waiting for your IIN post. Still trying to figure out if that’s righy for me or not.
Chelsea
I was pretty sad to learn a few weeks back of target’s departure from Canada… Because.. You know, I dream of one day living somewhere with a target.. And with.. Canada.
I also discovered a floppy disk a few months back. Totally scary to think what’s on it…
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, & Beers
Haha, ooooh the floppy disk. Both mine and my husband’s laptops don’t even take CDs/DVDs now, which was pretty frustrating when I tried to load some new software a few months back.
Erin@BeetsPerMinute
Hi Amanda, I just discovered your blog through Lauren @ Bikini Experiment! I love this link-up idea, thinking about joining in too. I had to laugh when I saw your floppy disk, because I am in the process of moving and going through old boxes of stuff from college and found a bunch of floppy disks and now I am dying of curiosity as to what is on them.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hi Erin! Thanks so much for stopping by and saying hi π
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles
I have a disposable camera that I never developed. It’s from right before I was pregnant and a few pictures during my pregnancy. Lately I think about bringing it in although I don’t think we have any more 1 hour phoro stores lol. So true what kids will never experience. I talk about it alllll the time with my son. It’s crazy. My most used emjojis don’t even involve the faces, is that weird? It’s all about the cookie, the ice cream, the boy running, the queen girl face and the chocolate bar.
Melanie
I have noticed it’s staying lighter later and it too makes me happy!! We’re finally over the hump and headed towards Spring. π
Miss Polkadot
Floppy disks. VHS. Can we add cassette recorders and the frustration when the ‘intestines’ of a cassette fiddled up to that list? Aaah, childhood memories. In a way, I miss the good old times and in another I can’t imagine all the intricateness and loss of time that would come with it if we still had to use all of those. <- That statement alone should probably cause me to consider slowing down again …
#8: Me. All. of. the. time. I don't blame you and will happily wait for your reply. Talk again in … a few months π ? Maybe we should take up text messages instead, too, haha.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
π Those times were so inconvenient, eh? Like having to rewind a cassette to listen to a song again, and then doing the rewind… play… rewind… play… rewind… play routine to try and find where it starts? Oh good times. And ugh… e-mail today. Promise!
Michele @ paleorunningmomma
Pay phones and also waiting hours or even days for your favorite song to play on the radio and then trying to figure out the name of it and the artist! Also I’ve noticed the days getting just a bit longer. Much better than December π
Cat
A floppy disk! Lovely antique π I wonder if people will be buying them in antique shops in the future to put on their walls… Ofc the shops will be online. And walls will be holographic.
Too far?
And YES to the longer days! It’s actually colder here now than it was in the dark Dec-Jan, but I can hack that better than the dark.
Khushboo
Haha I posted that link on the 19 most frustrating things kids these days won’t experience..it really made me laugh! And that picture of the floppy disk brought on even more nostalgia- I have some bad memories of losing all my work because I accidentally bent a disk…it wasn’t pleasant at the time! Looking forward to hearing more about your health coaching woman- you owe me an email ;)!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I do! Today. Promise!
Sara @ Lake Shore Runner
Oh my gosh if someone saw my recent emojis it would be embarrassing – ha/ Also, what? How is Target leaving? How are they having loses? It is my favorite store! Lastly I need that hand cream. I thought that as I was typing this because my hands are soooooo dry. Happy Thursday!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Well our Targets weren’t nearly as good as your guys’. I fell in love with the ones I visited in the States, but up here? Even Walmart is better…
Arman @ thebigmansworld
My mum is going to kill me but I think she JUST stopped using floppy disks a few years ago. Then again, it’s the same person who hangs up on every phone call unintentionally (I hope…)
Our Target ain’t doing too fly either…America’s Target’s though… Amazing.
