I know a lot of people like to get all fancy with their Sunday morning breakfast, taking the extra time to whip up a mean batch of pancakes, waffles, or French toast, but I tend to keep things pretty simple around these parts…
I used to turn my nose up at cereal, seeing it as nothing more than a flimsy snack food that didn’t have what it took to fill me up, but when I had to give up oatmeal and find a new breakfast obsession, cereal was actually the first thing I turned to – and it did not disappoint. Since I’m feeling particularly fond of it this morning, and I like to keep Sunday’s posts pretty lighthearted and relaxed, I decided a cereal survey was a good way to go. Hope you guys enjoy!
. – . – . – .
How often do you eat cereal? Every.single.day. Usually multiple times…
Do you measure out one serving or are you a free pourer? Free spirit, baby! I used to be really strict with making sure I never ate more than a single serving, but… who can honestly be satisfied by such a small amount?! It’s cereal! It’s wonderfully delicious! Well, there’s that and the fact that I gave up all that counting/measuring nonsense and have no desire to go back.
What is the last kind of cereal you ate? Kashi Cinnamon Harvest and Puffins with breakfast…
What is your favorite “healthy” cereal? I’m gonna have to go with Kashi Cinnamon Harvest or Weetabix.
What is your favorite “unhealthy” cereal? Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
What is your favorite fruity cereal? Erm. There are fruity cereals? I was never a fan of things like Fruit Loops or Fruity Pebbles so my answer to this question will beeee… pie. The answer is pie.
What is your favorite chocolatey cereal? Enjoy Life Double Chocolate Crunch granola.
What is one cereal you can’t stand? I wouldn’t say I really dislike any cereal, but I’m not the biggest fan of granola. I know people tend to be crazy about the stuff, but it’s way too dense and chewy for me. I prefer my cereals in biscuit/puff/flake form – I can only handle light a light sprinkle of granola as a topping.
What kind of milk do you prefer in your cereal? This kind…
What was your favorite cereal as a kid? Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cap’n Crunch, Corn Pops, Golden Grahams, and I liked picking the marshmallows out of Lucky Charms.
Did you ever buy a box of cereal just for the toy inside? Heck yeah I did! Didn’t everyone? And I didn’t even bother waiting until I finished the cereal to get the toy at the bottom of the box. Oh no. I just dug around until I found it. Do they still put toys in cereal boxes? I honestly can’t say that I’ve seen any lately. Sad face.
What is the most amount of cereal you’ve eaten in one sitting? I don’t know about one sitting, but there have been numerous occasions where I polished off an entire box over the course of a day. Cereal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Don’t mind if I do!
Best cereal for snacking on dry? Kashi Cinnamon Harvest… especially when it’s dunked in applesauce.
Do you put fruit/sugar/other toppings in/on your cereal? Definitely. A big bowl of cereal with milk used to satisfy me when I was younger, but now it takes a pretty fancy mix of yogurt, fruit, and almond butter to fill me up.
Do I have you craving some cereal yet? 😀 Happy Sunday, friends!

Do you make a fancy breakfast on Sundays?
How often do you eat cereal? As a meal or snack? Do you stick to one serving?
Is there any cereal you don’t like?
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom
Honestly, this post has inspired me to give cereal a try for breakfast. I usually only eat it as a snack because I don’t like to add milk of any kind to it and like you said, it doesn’t fill me up. I honestly have never thought about using it as a topping for my yogurt and basically treating it like I would treat my granola. Thanks for the ideas! All of your photos look DELICIOUS! I usually try to stick to one serving, but if I’m gonna start eating it for breakfast again, then maybe it’s time to forget about the serving sizes.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I never thought it would make a good breakfast either until I really started getting creative with it. If you dress it up properly though, it’s really satisfying and delicious 😀
Andrea @Pencils and Pancakes
I love cereal so much…. I actually think I need to stop buying it cause it’s making my diet A LOT harder……Lately I have been putting Kashi Go Lean Crunch mixed with Honey Nut Cheerios, greek yogurt, fruit and almond butter. Getting hungry thinking about it. When I was little I LOVED Crispix. I can’t find it anywhere anymore! I also was a huge fan of Frosted Flakes. You can never have just one bowl!
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables
i LOVE cereal. there aren’t many good GF ones out there though… I miss my Kashi for sure!
Haley @ The Saucy Apple
I actually go through phases with cereal. Sometimes I’ll eat it all day for a week, and then other times, I’ll go a month without buying cereal at the store. I think it also depends on what cereal I bring home. Have you ever tried the Cascadian Farms version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. It’s better than the original (in my opinion)! As a kid, I never like cocoa pebbles.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
No, I’ve never tried that one. I don’t think we get it up here 🙁
Lara
Okay, this is kind of embarassing: My favorite cereal is Grape Nuts. Everbody laughs at me when they see it standing around in huge bulk boxes but I can’t have breakfast without it. Call me a grandma but I love it 🙂
Hollie
You mean it’s unnacceptable to still buy cereal for the toy inside? Kidding. Anyways-I wake up 15 minutes early every morning to make sure I have time to make breakfast. I’d prefer to do that then be rushed. I think it is a much better start to my day, leaving me less anxious.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Do they seriously still have toys in cereal boxes?! I honestly don’t think I’ve seen any in a while…
Lucie
Yumm!! Would you mind sending over one of these delicious looking bowls? Craving cereal now, YES!! 😉 🙂
Ashley @ Life and Fitness
Loved the cereal survey! Lol so funny I couldn’t never eat cereal everyday, maybe cookies but not cereal haha 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Well, cookies are a suitable substitute I suppose 😉
Sara @ fitcupcaker
today I just made eggs with fruit..yesterday was the fancy pancakes but you can NEVER go wrong with cereal!
Meghan @ After the Ivy League
I completely love your obsession with cereal. We are on the same page. I also used to measure out exact servings (3/4 cup, 2/3 cup whatever it was) but there’s no way in hell I’m doing that anymore. What’s the point in dirtying an extra dish? I just have however much I feel like. Threw together a mini yogurt bowl this weekend for a snack with peanut butter and Puffins, thought of you!
Alex @ therunwithin
I never understood measuring cereal. Since I was little I was all about combining and just pouring. I have to say though I am a milk more than yogurt girl for my cereal. But when I do eat greek yogurt, that is the kind I adore. this week there was a sale for another kind so I gave it a try. Big mistake. Like terrible mistake, nothing like oikos
molly @ heart, sole & cereal
oh i am SO stealing this survey – it’s only fair given my blog name, right? as you know, i love me some cereal but never have it for breakfast. i don’t know why, i think it’s because i pretty much stick to the basic cereal and milk combo and that doesn’t fill me up too well. that being said i’ve already planned on making on of your cereal/yogurt bowls for breakfast this week so i’ll keep you posted on how that goes. you know because i know you’re waiting with bated breath to see just how well my cereal forays go… 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha! Well now you’ve got me scared to admit that I’m interested to see how it goes for you 😛 Not in a ‘waiting with bated breath’ kind of way, but hoping that you like it and get hooked so I have someone to share the addiction with 😉
Miss Polkadot
Sigh, this post isn’t making me happy. Actually, it’s making me sad about the lack of good cereals in stores around here. If you want cereal around here you have to take all the sugar, unneccesarily processed stuff and loooong ingredient lists. Sure, there’s still the health food supermarket but even there you won’t get anything like those Kashi products, Puffins or others. Somebody care to send me some ;)?!
That being said I like granola a lot and recently bought a gluten-free one using lots of puffed cereals (corn, rice, millet and buckwheat) making it super crunchy. It might be the only decent one you can find around here. I was happy to introduce granola back into my life after a way too long absence.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I remember being kind of shocked at the lack of good cereals when I was in Europe, but you guys have plenty of other good foods to make up for it!
Picky Nicky
My mom always complains that we have too many types of cereal at home! She’s like “finish what you have before buying more” but come on.. You need to be able to combine them! And different cereals are good for different occasions! seriously, mom
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Next time she says that, tell her that I have like 7 open boxes and I live by myself 😆 Different cereals are definitely needed for different occasions.
Caitlin
This is probably one of the most beautiful posts I’ve ever read 😉 I LOVE cereal, especially all the ones you mentioned! Sometimes I make a fancy breakfast on Sundays…especially if Joe is home (and breakfast is the one thing I can make better than him haha), but usually just have a loaded English muffin before I head out for a run or the day…cereal is my favorite snack for sure! And I love using it as a topping on oatmeal because I like crunchy things. Since I usually have it as a snack, I think I generally stick to a single servingish but I don’t measure…and I mix three or four together…little of this…little of that…and as far as cereal I don’t like goes, probably the “fruity ones” like fruity pebbles or fruit loops…not a fan at all…rather just add real fruit as a topping!
Jessica @ Prayers and Apples
My favorite unhealthy cereal is those Reese’s Peanut Butter Puffs! I haven’t had them in literally years but they’re amaazzziinng! 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ll have to take your word for it because I’ve never had them… pesky peanut allergies 🙁
Kendra
I actually rarely eat cereal, since I prefer oatmeal. But I do love granola, either homemade or the Bear Naked brands. And I did use to eat Kashi Cinnamon Harvest on a regular basis–it is delicious! Also, I used to eat Puffins many years ago when I went to my grandparent’s house; thinking of it brings back such good memories:) Funny how food can do that…
Alex @ Raw Recovery
I was just thinking about Sunday morning breakfasts. I usually can’t be bothered to do anything fancy so I end up with my usual brekkie..toast. Very exciting I know. One of these days I’m going to go out for breakfast! I used to do that all the time when I lived in Philadelphia but not so much in Denver.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
The fact that you made an entire survey dedicated to cereal just made me adore you a little bit more. That is too awesome.
I don’t actually eat cereal too often, which one wouldn’t expect considering that I have three open boxes right now…although earlier this week, I had a random cereal and milk craving. Usually when I eat it, it’s as a yogurt or cottage cheese topping. Or, a walking-into-the-kitchen-and-grabbing-a-handful kinda thing. I actually woke up starving this morning so that was the first thing I did when I woke up!
Usually, my breakfasts on the weekend are pretty similar to what I make during the week…although your mention of french toast kinda makes me wish I had thrown that together this morning…but I had a sweet potato with almond butter, honey and two runny-yolk eggs.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I may or may not have like… seven open boxes 😯 And I live alone 😯
Sarah @PickyRunner
I am definitelyyyyyy snacking on some cinnamon puffins right now. I love the cinnamon kashi too though. Actually, I just love cereal in general. but I like it dry, with nothing on it. I guess I’m weird like that…All of those cereal pictures look so professional! Someday I’ll actually put an effort into photography. I don’t think it will be today, though.
Kate @ Quarter Century Southern Living
I have an absolute cereal obsession. Like, could eat it all day, everyday. Sticking to one serving is a rarity. It is so good!!
whiness
Yaay, you actually like cereals quite much 🙂 And you make me wanna eat some even today!
Replying your questions… I like lazy mornings and breakfasts. Indeed, I often make kind of fancy breakfast on Sunday but it’s not the most important thing. I want to eat my breakfast (even just simple oatmeal) slowly and withouth thoughts like “omg I’m gonna be late!” most of all. 🙂
I used to eat cereals every day when I was younger. Now it chandeg just a little bit. I like to add them to my oatmeal, semolina, yoghurt, milk or cottage cheese because it always makes a tasty meal. I don’t treat cereals as a snack but without any toppings these just don’t satiate my hunger.
Cereal I don’t like? I don’t like some kinds of Puffins. 😛 I usually like Puffins but there are also a few awful kinds.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Those relaxed mornings are my favorite as well 🙂 I actually think that’s part of the reason that I wake up so early – so that I don’t have to rush and can enjoy my breakfast in peace.
rachel
all that cereal has me craving now haha I usually snack on cereal or bring it with my lunch since I usually have a yogurt and fruit and stuff lol I usually stick to 1-2 servings, although, last night I can honestly say I think I had around 4 as my dinner 😉 pretty much Puffins rock lol
Nicky
Waaaah you totally got me craving cereal now haha!!! I used to eat cereal basically all day everyday, especially when I was in recovery for some reason but these days I don’t really eat it. Since going GF I’ve found that the GF cereals available here are just..not great. I really wish we had Puffins and things like that but I can’t keep ordering them online all the time because I’d get through them so fast! They are definitely my fave ever ever <3
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I remember you seriously loving on Puffins – they always make me think of ya 😉
Lauren
I love how as I’m sitting here eating cinnamon puffins and kashi cinnamon harvest, I see the two pictures at the top come up on my news feed. <3
I used to detest cereal because it was empty calories but I have come to love and enjoy snacking it again. I used to LOVE reeses puffs and I definitely picked the marshmallows out of Lucky Charms. Also, I picked out all the raisins out of my dad's raisin bran – because they are sugar-coated – one time and my mom called the company to complain hahaha. Is it embarrassing this was my junior year of college? Oops.
Lisa
I’m an oatmeal lover through and through. Well that oat bran and buckwheat. I try not to let things get too complicated because I’m super impatient and hungry in the mornings;) I wish cereal kept me full because it woud be much simpler to make every morning! Unfortunately, it just doesn’t keep me satisfied. You always make me want to switch over to a cereal lover though!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You just need to fancy it up a little by adding in some good stuff like yogurt, fruit, and nut butter. Cereal with milk never keeps me full, but this way? Totally hits the spot.
[email protected].
Sometimes I have fancy breakfasts on sunday – sometimes not. Today is one of those not days – everyone is napping anyways.
I’m not the world’s biggest cereal fan – I stick to Special K, Cheerios and one granola-berry blend. I do NOT like Reese PB Cup cereal or whatever it is called.
Elizabeth@myneonrunningshoes
I agree yogurt instead of milk is the way to go! Have a great Sunday!
Jennifer
hey 🙂 i love your photos, and oh my god when i was in halifax for my third year of uni, i lived in an apartment but they had that kashi cinnamon cereal and i’d buy it sometimes though it was really expensive. but i can’t find it here, now that im home. it’s in some stores but not sobeys which is the chain i go to often. i love shredded wheat (bite-sized) but i actually just bought the cinnamon kashi a month or so ago w a coupon when i was at loblaws…and i will open it when im finished my shredded wheat 🙂 but seriously, your pictures are so beautiful. i usually like milk with cereal if it’s for breakfast, but i often have oats/some sort of hot cereal. like this morning. and for snacks though i tend to have yogurt w some cereal sometimes. hwen i was younger though i liked the sweet ones but we were not allowed them at all, just on my birthday sleepovers so i’d get like fruit loops and lucky charms (and yea i liked to take the marsh mellows)…but i think it was good that my parents were strict in that sense because i didn’t like them that much when i would have them more than a few times. i mean we were allowed to put sugar on our shreddies, rices krispies and bran flakes lol…though now i find i don’t need any more to sweeten those. and during the cold months my mom would make red river, oatmeal or creme of wheat in the week days and of course i’d add like copious amounts of brown sugar to those ;P i remember i’d add it and it would seem to “disappear” so i’d be like, ‘dad, it’s gone i need more’…over and over and i’d finish the bowl and find this pile of brown sugary creme of wheat there :O oops…anyway, hope you’re having a good day love 🙂 xox
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I remember my mom making simple bowls of oats for me and adding brown sugar on top as well 🙂 I’ve been fancying up my oats for so long that sometimes I forget how good the simple ones are – I’m going to have to try doing that with my next bowl. Hope you’re having a good day as well, hun <3
Alisha @ Alisha's Appetite
My “fancy” breakfast on Sundays is a big ol’ bowl of hot oats! I just can’t seem to kick the craving for it every. single. day. especially in the winter months! My favorite cereal brand is Kashi for sure- your cereal bowls looks a million x better than mine, ha!
Khushboo
LOVE this survey- I might have to fill it out too if you don’t mind :)! I love cereal…with milk, yogurt, dry, snack, meal WHATEVER! I usually add a mix of oats & Bran Flakes to my yogurt bowl breakfasts…why choose when you can have both eh ;)! There are very few cereals which I don’t like but 2 that especially come to mind are Fruity Pebbles & Shredded Wheat- ick!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh girl, you know I don’t mind! Spread the cereal love 😀 And agreed on the Shredded Wheat. I had some pretty traumatic experiences with Shreddies as a child. Evil stuff.
kim@hungryhealthygirl
I LOVE your photos!! I eat cereal at least once a week, but have cereal more often mixed in with yogurt for a snack. I love all kinds of Kashi and that’s what I usually have…all different kinds mixed together. Unsweetened vanilla almond milk is my favorite milk to pair with cereal, but I do love yogurt too. I just recently tried adding nutbutter on top and it took my cereal to a totally different level! 😉
P
Greek yogurt, PB, and cereal (maybe some fruit) is seriously the best cereal combo. I can’t think of having just cereal with plain milk anymore…it’s all about the greek yogurt!
Your cereal bowls look way more awesome than mine though!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That’s only because they have to get all glammed up for their photoshoots 😉
Laura Agar Wilson (@lauraagarwilson)
Oh sometimes I wish I could do cereal, its just that it doesn’t fill me up and its a serious binge trigger food. I’m glad I have plenty of other breakfast options that satisfy me well instead, although sometimes I do get a fancy for a bowl of PB puffins!
Andrea
I don’t make an elaborate breakfast on Sundays, I just make whatever I want, any day of the week! I don’t like restricting the good breakfasts to just the weekends 🙂 I eat cereal quite often. I had it twice throughout the day yesterday though, and I thought that was a lot, but you and other commenters are making me feel more normal about it 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha! I think my abundant consumption of a few different foods makes people feel a lot more normal about their eating habits. Honestly, as long as you feel good, then you’re not doing anything wrong 🙂
Katie @ KatieEnPursuit
Yum! This post is making me need to bring back yogurt bowls STAT! My fav answer above — “Pie”. 100% agree about fruity cereals, no thank you! Happy Sunday!
Shelby
I typically stick with either my usual banana whipped oatmeal with almond butter and berries on top OR a yogurt bowl similar to yours- today was 2% banana greek yogurt topped with banana slices, blueberries, granola, and peanut butter.
I used to eat cereal almost twice a day! Now I rarely ever eat it to be honest. I think I may have gotten “cerealed” out (which I thought could neverrrr happen). I love it as a snack before bedtime if I’m needing one because it’s easy. I used to always use measuring cups for my cereal but honestly would always end up snacking out of the box and eating more than a serving 😉 Much better to just be intuitive with the amount you wanna eat! It’s so freeing to eat without measuring isn’t it?
There aren’t many cereals I dislike but I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan of super sugary cereals, they make my teeth feel weird! Haha, happy Sunday girl!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Eep! I’m really hoping I never get cerealed out… I love oatmeal, but I’m still weary about going back to eating it too often. And yes, life without measuring is blissful. Happy Sunday, Shelby!
Danielle @ Clean Food Creative Fitness
Yes! best post ever! I am such a cereal fanatic, it’s kind of a problem! If I could eat it for every meal every day I totally would! My options are a bit more limited now since I’m gluten free but you best believe I’ve found some of the best gluten free cereals!
Chelsie S
I have cereal at least twice a day, three times a day on the weekend. No shame!! Honestly, it’s my feel good food (along with maple syrup. And belgian waffles). Nothing happier than a great bowl of cereal. While I’m not a free pourer, I grab a “handful” and a “few fingerfuls” more, which I don’t consider to be measuring … maybe it is? It isn’t intentional if it is. I just buy in bulk, so pouring from the big boxes/bags is difficult.
Favourite thing about cereal — the smushed bits at the bottom of the bag. I love the days when I get to finish off a bag of cereal. Yesterday’s breakfast was one of those joyous occasions. Big smiles to that!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
We would make good roomies! I would give you my smushed bits because I never have any idea what to do with them…
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
I’m reading this as I’m eating a bowl of oatmeal, so that is my Sunday breakfast for today! Cereal usually keeps me full for like 30 minutes if I don’t eat it with yogurt or something, so I love it in yogurt. Otherwise, I eat it as a snack 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Ditto! I actually don’t even really remember the last time I had cereal with milk, although I have to admit that it’s super tasty that way…
