Nothing like starting off the weekend with a big bowl of burnt oatmeal for breakfast…
… or, you know, not π―
Let’s try that again…
Muuuuuch better. Sure, I could have just thrown together a quick bowl of cereal for breakfast and saved myself the extra trouble, but how could I say no to a face like this?
I couldn’t.
And I’m glad I didn’t because, for whatever reason, this morning’s bowl tasted extra delicious…
Swoon-tastic.
But don’t fret – I’m not hatin’ on cereal here. For me, it’s just more of a lunch time food…
… as well as a perfect snack time food…
Although, lately I’ve been too busy pimpin’ my rides rice cakes to think about snacking on cereal…
What can I say? When I like something, I reallyΒ like something, and I eat a lot of said something before moving on to something else.
Ya follow? π If not, I don’t blame you. What I’m trying to say is that I get stuck on certain foods and end up eating a lot of them, before I tire of them and get stuck on something else.
This has been the story of my life for… err… my entire life. I distinctly remember going through a Pop Tarts phase. A Mac&Cheese phase. A Mini Wheats phase. An Eggo waffle phase. A Goldfish cracker phase. A turkey sandwich phase. A… well, let’s just say there have been a lot of phases.
Some of my current obsessions? (besides oats and rice cakes, of course)…
Chocolate pudding spiked with cocoa powder, then topped with almond butter.
Grape kombucha… dare I say I’m starting to love it more than Trilogy?
Sweet and savory oats… (with a softboiled egg, avocado, cottage cheese, and blueberry jam)
Biting into muffins…
… (as opposed to messing/crumbling them)…
Pumpkin chili… (with avocado, salsa, and cottage cheese)
Cherries
Toasted English muffins with multiple toppings (why settle for just one?)
… and who knows what the next one will be.
I do enjoy trying new foods, and I definitely get hit by the creativity bug every once in a while, but more often than not I find myself craving and eating the same things.
Some might call it a “rut”, but I’m not a big fan of the phrase because I amΒ a fan of what I eat, and a rut, to me, implies that someone is unhappy with how they’re eating and wants to change it.
Repeating eats seems to be almost taboo in the blog world, and people who eat the same things day after day either label themselves as boring or disordered. But why all the pressure for variety? Why mess with a good thing? If you like it, then eat it until your heart’s content…
… or until you get tired of almond butter and pudding oatmeal, and move on to something else π
. – . – . – .
Do you get stuck on certain foods? Do you see it as a bad thing?
What are some of your current obsessions?
Sarina
Um. I eat mostly the same foods every day – in fact I am having to keep a food diary for my dietician for a week and embarrassingly, it’s was almost the exact same thing for all meals and snacks for about five days straight.
But I think, like you said, it’s all about the motives behind it. I can’t get enough of these foods and maybe it’s just habit, but there’s nothing else I want at the time – when I like a certain food, it takes a loooooooooong time for me to get sick of it.
My staples at the moment – tuna, steamed spinach/kale/silverbeet with a tomato pasta sauce stirred through, and natural yogurt sprinkled with natural sweetener.
Irina
I completely agree…why force yourself to not eat the same thing daily when it’s what your body craves? Even if it is the same thing for all three meals of the day haha
I had a serious Chipotle phase in high school. I ate it approximately 4 times a week (not even kidding in the slightest) for about a month. Soon enough I got sooo sick of it that I couldn’t eat it for almost an entire year! *gag*
And I’m so jealous of the Grape Kombucha! It’s literally the only flavor that my local Whole Foods doesn’t sell π
buttonss - Cherie
If you flippin love oats, or avocado on english muffins, or corn thins with vegemite, or chopped apple with cinnamon and soy, then why not eat it more often than not!
I see absoloutely no problem with eating what you love, everyday.
Though sometimes I push myself out of my little cycle, and even though I would really love to just have my beloved baked sweet potato for dinner, I get myself to try a new recipe, and I’m usually really glad I did. I mean theres always tomorrow to that potato, right?
Dude, if they were my oats, I would have flipped. Thats one expesive banana wasted!!!!
Khushboo Thadani
When I like a food, I can’t stop eating it…it’s what the taste buds crave! Hummus & cottage cheese are my current obsessions. oh and I’m the opposite with my muffins, hate biting directly into them!
lovetotrain
totally get stuck on certain foods! But then I do the same thing with songs… same song on repeat- doesn;t usually make me the favourite person in the house. I can’t get over my love affair with buckwheat at the moment. Your sweet and savoury oats look divine!!!
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
π I do that with music too! When I find a song I like, I basically play it to death. I’ll listen to it over and over until I literally can’t stand it and I have to go cold turkey for a few months.
kbwood
OH HAYYY FOOD PORN! I really need to try your savory oats! They look awesome!!!! I am loving me some oats lately. i tried a combo on my last post with sweet and savory quinoa flakes, it was really good!! I love you girl!
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance
I’ve been wanting to try savory oats for a while now, but I’m always stumped when deciding what to put into it! Plus I’m always partial to having oats as a breakfast food, but I need to get over this phobia stat.
Right now I am stuck on Justin’s Maple Almond Butter on rice cakes. I die.
Tori (Fresh Fruition)
Oh, boy. That’s happened to me a few times. Spend a minute too long reading a post and you’ve got yourself burn-y oats! Eeep.
I actually just posted about this! HAHA! Well, not as straight-forward-ly, but a similar concept. I eat a lot of oats. I love oats. A lot. Fitting, eh? But my mom was all ‘eat something different!’, so I did. And I really enjoyed it! Maybe not quite as much as my dessert-y oats, but very very good nonetheless! I do tend to eat something over and over until I can’t stand it any longer, but I try and think- you don’t get cravings for favorites without trying something new first! Like, I never would be adoring steel cut oats had I not tried something other than my overnighters. Or I’d not be loving tabouleh if I’d stuck to completely sweet things as I always seem to want. I figure I can always have a favorite another time after giving something else a go. But then I want to give my body what it wants! Oh, what a dilemma to have π
Current obsessions: oatmeal (always) with all the fixin’, chocolate and coffee together, honey and maple syrup, animal crackers, soy pudding and yogurt. Nom.
I think I might pick up some kombucha at the store tomorrow. Eeep! I’m nervous. It’s so expensive, and I’ve never tried it! Flavor suggestions? I figure you’d be a great person to ask since our tastes are so similar <3<3<3
Kate @ Chasing It
“if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” π
I’ve been eating the same bedtime snack for like four years – whole grain toast with tons of peanut butter, sprinkled with cinnamon. usually some berries on the side!
Currently though, I’m on a Vanilla Kefir kick – I’ve never been a fan of straigh-up milk, but I looove this stuff in a cereal/fruit mix!
Rachel
I definitely get stuck on foodsβ¦ but then again I also get bored really easily. right now i’m on a cashew butter (homemade!) kick. that and i’m loving yogurt & peanut flour. with something chocolatey in it.
Ma Ma Megan
I totally can relate. I will eat something every day and then one day I will want something else and move on..
Not really the same for dinner though, I like to make new things for dinner as much as possible, most the time that doesn’t happen, but I try π
Laura
I tend to stick to the same foods cause I love them so much ! No harm in that as long as it’s balanced . Once in a while I get the urge to switch things up though. Currently I’m stuck on banana oats !
kristi (sweetcheeks)
I definitely do that with food too. There’s nothing wrong with it at all in my eyes. In fact its completely right because I’m honoring my cravings!
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
That’s the perfect way to look at it π
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes
I get stuck on foods all the time! Current fave would be pbutter with banana and dried figs on toast! so delish π
Kaila @healthyhelperblog!
I am the exact same way! I find combos I like and just end up craving them and eating them again and again until I find something EVEN better! AndsI need to find grape kombucha! I haven’t seen it anywhere!!!
accidentlydelish
get sick of almond butter? don’t speak of suck blasphemy!! i don’t think that will EVER be possible for me.
I TOTALLY get on food kicks. (actually got “yelled” at by my nutritionist for “being in a rut”) I can’t help the foods I like, and if I like them. I eat them! Right now I am on an old school pb&j kick. I think I have 5 different (ok maybe more) of jellies/jams anddd maybe the same amount of nut butters. haha. EVERY time i go to the store I think I buy a new one. whoops.
omnomally
I do believe I’m in love with your bowl of pumpkin chili there…… yumm!!!! I don’t mind being in food ‘ruts’ now and then, eventually you find a brand new love that you just can’t get enough of, so I just run with it. My rut lately? Oats with carob, cinnamon and a pinch of chili. Sounds wrong? Tastes awesome!
sunshinevegan
I’ve been really wanting to try Kombacha but I don’t know which flavor to get!
I am on a total rice cake kick right now! I’ve been getting these really yummy caramel ones and they are the bomb. I like to put them in a bowl with amod milk and almond butter and jam or cinnamon or whatev and they get all soggy and delicious π If that’s being in a rut then I love my rut!
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
The first flavor I tried was Trilogy, and I loved it. And I NEED to try letting rice cakes get soggy. Sounds like it would be amazing.
ikeepitclassy
my freshman year of high school i would have the same breakfast and lunch for the LONGEST time: a bowl of flaxplus and milk with a banana for breakfast, and a pb sandwich for lunch. then at one point i would eat an avocado with activia every day haha. my current obsession is chocolate <3 oh wait… i've always been obsessed!
K
I’ve been “stuck” both in a healthy ok way and a not-so-healthy way.
For example, eating X everyday in efforts to limit caloric intake was NOT good. But now, I actually struggle to not have variety (let myself be “stuck”) Its hard to eat the same thing 2 days in a row, even if I LOVE it, except ice cream. I have it every night and have for almost a year now. It’s my fave!
After reading this post, I’m inspired. I’m going to start repeating the things I really like π Currently, rice pudding, cheerios (together and separate), avocado, and blueberries all make the list
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
There was a time where I was completely obsessed with making sure I ate a big variety of things, but that’s nonsense. Eat what you love, and as much of it as you want π
vegansunshine
I’ve never had the grape flavor! Yummy. Your breakfast looks very simular to mine! π
Whitney
Tara
I am the same way!! I think I was in a popcorn rut for two years straight… I ate popcorn every night. not even out of habit. I just really like popcorn. Then I just kind of stopped and switched to cereal. Every now and then I’ll have popcorn again and I still love it, but I don’t need to have it every night anymore!
Lately i’ve been loving cereal and frozen baked goods. And granola bars. I know it’s a bit weird, but I’ve always eaten my waffles without defrosting them so i decided to try it with a muffin one day and I really liked it. Then i decided to try it with a granola bars and i found that they get a really cool texture when they’re frozen!
haveasliceofkatypie
I certainly get stuck on certain foods but I have to say that I really am in a rut right now because I want to change what I’m eating but can’t think of anything else to have. That and I’m not putting enough effort into trying new things. Oh well, my own fault really π
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
I hear ya. Sometimes it seems like WAY too much effort to think about what to eat… especially when you’re busy. Like, I have too many other things to think of, so I don’t wanna be sitting there trying to come up with something new for dinner, ya know?
debbiecutieface
oh I totally get what you’re saying! I go through food phases ALL.THE.TIME. That doesn’t mean it’s a “disordered behavior”! It just means you really really like what you eat!
beckafly
I definately get stuck on certain foods. Even as a kid I remember going through waffle and pancake phases, strawberry and apple etc. Even as an adult it still remains true. I love trying new things and do so every chance I get, but there are still foods I always come back to.
Currently I’m obessing over pancakes, muffins, mushrooms, and veggie stir frys. Then there are things like nut butters, broccoli and bananas that I never get tired of.
Alexandra
I love your food obsessions! I know what ya mean about getting hooked on a food, happpens to this girl ALL the time π I think puffins will soon be my next obsession mwahaha
Oh and in response to your comment, heck yes I’ve tried kashi honey sunshine and I agree, they’re just like capn crunch!! π
Katie
I had cereal for lunch today!!! Winning!
I get stuck on foods, oats for instance ; ) I just LOVE them, why change when you know what you like ; )
Glad you enjoyed the video of us, we were bored, lol, and also trying to figure out if we should buy a new camera like a flip cam, I think we are going to , the other one stinks : p
happy saturday! love you!!!
Sara K
I definitely have food phases and did as a kid- I had phases with Grape Nuts cereal, pb & pickle tortilla sandwiches, Krusteaz waffles with LOTS of syrup, etc
I don’t think it’s a bad thing as long as it doesn’t come from a disordered/restricting mentality.
Current obsessions: 6 months later and I’m still on a major kefir with puffins kick, also obsessed with oversize t-shirts/chunky knits, high waisted shorts/skirts, and anything pomegranate flavoured
Meg
Ok, all of your pics make me want to just have you come to my house and make me food. Everything looks so yummy!
I’m completely a rut girl. I’ve always pretty much eaten the same things, and once I find something I like, I don’t want to take the chance of not enjoying that snack/meal/whatever. Sounds a bit weird, but so true. Currently I’m loving greek yogurt/oats/sweetener/cereal on top for breakfast and huge salads for dinner. And fro-yo’s becoming a daily thing…
Aimee
I too get stuck on certain foods but nothing wrong with that – as long as it makes you happy and feel good! My current loves – cottage cheese with fruit, vanilla mint smoothies and home grown tomatoes with hummus!
Those rice cakes topped with almond butter abd cottage cheese looks fabulous – ill have to give it a try!
π aimee
cleaneatingchelsey
I eat a lot of the same foods, and I’m a-okay with it! I love it actually. And where in the world did you find that grape kombucha?!? I’ve never seen it!!
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Whaaa? You mean we have something up here that you guys don’t have down there in WF and TJ heaven? I’m shocked π―
sarah
What.a.delicious.post.
I am the EXACT same – I totally get stuck on certain foods but kinda love it!
I actually have you to blame/ thank/worship for many of my current food obsessions. Today I made your cottage cheese protein pudding thing and it was soooo creamy and decadent tasting(I prefer it to tofu protein pudding methinks) topped with cinnamon grahams! LOVE love LOVE it, will be making it over and over, It truly was a bowl of heaven. This only goes to further confirm my thoughts that your foodie creative mind can do NO wrong.
I could go on for ages listing my current obsessions. So ill just say all of your recipes I have made, and my love affair with yoghurt coated banana chips has been going strong for a looooong time- they are friggin ridic delicious!
I love this post!
Xxx
Sarah - feeedingbrainandbody
I definitely go through food phases. When I like something a lot, I crave it, and when I crave it, I eat it. So if I crave it everyday, then i eat it everyday. Then all of a sudden I find something new that I love and the next cycle starts! It actually makes grocery shopping a whole lot easier!
VEGirl
My “eat peanut butter on everything” phases hasn’t gone away yet ;).
Alrxis
I went through so many of the same phases. I’m happy with what I eat and I don’t see what’s wrong in sticking to what works! Right now I’m in a yogurt mess and sweet potato phase
2tightlywound
I definitely get stuck on certain foods, though I keep a pretty limited pantry so there isn’t really an opportunity for variety.
I just got through a zucchini phase (I know, you’ll never find yourself in one of those :D) and a popcorn phase. And I’m feeling a cereal phase coming on…just stocked up today π
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Lol you’re right. I don’t envision ever finding myself in a zucchini phase.
Shannon Lloyd
Zucchini chips = AMAZING!
Jaime
this is SO me. For as long as I can remember I have gone through phases of food “ruts” – but I totally agree with you that “rut” carries a negative connotation, which has never been the case for me – I just love the particular food so damn much that I can’t get enough π
It’s funny to think back on certain times in my life because I can always associate them with particular foods.
oh! and one my current obsessions = rice cakes too! love those babies. eat’em daily.
other foods currently on repeat = brussels sprouts, steamed carrots, strawberries, plums, kiwis, and almonds
sproutybuns
My daily eats are basically one amazingly delicious food ‘rut’ and I love it! A majority of Americans are stuck in a fast food rut so why can’t I be stuck in a buckwheat, banana and cinnamon rut? π Other obsessions? quinoa w/ nooch, avocado on Ezekiel bread and hummus … on/in everything! Choosing to repetitively eat healthy, yummy food is not disordered, its treating your body (and soul) well! π
Cait @ Beyond Bananas
Grape Kombucha!? I need to find some of that!! YUM!
And I am diggin’ the rice cake snack girl! π
VeggieGirl
Oh goodness, yes I do – you know that by now, hahaha π
Current obsessions = protein bars and shakes.
