Happy Friday, friends! π
Who’s glad to see the weekend rolling in? I am! But not so much for the promise of R&R, because I doubt I’ll be getting much of that this weekend (I need to get serious about packing!). No. The real reason that I’m happy to see this week come to a close is that it brings me that much closer to theΒ big move.
Six days and counting π Can.not. wait.
And that’s not the only exciting thing that’s been happening around these parts.Β See, today I got reunited with a long-lost friend…
Not quite what you were expecting, was it? Allow me to explain.
Me and Mac go way back. If I had to pick one food that reminded me of my younger years (God, do I sound old or what?), Mac&Cheese would be it. When I was first started learning how to cook for myself, macaroni and cheese was basically the only thing that I could make [well], so it basically became the only thing I ate.
And it didn’t hurt that it was deliciously addictive either.
What? Don’t give me that look. Like you’ve never eaten an entire box over the course of one day. You never? Well then. You were either a good cook, a more health-conscious teenager, or lactose intolerant.
None of the above apply to me.
In any case… Mac&Cheese. We were tight. Peas and carrots, if you will. I won’t go over the length and breadth of my addiction to those cheesy noodles, other than to say that I loved them as much as I now love oatmeal…
… and ate them just as often [read: every day, sometimes multiple times]
(Get your minds outta the gutter!)Β
Enter ED, stage right (Boo! Hiss!). Hello 4 years of Mac&Cheese sobriety…
… and now, good-bye…
… and good riddance…
Yes, I’ve fallen off the wagon. Okay, maybe not completelyΒ off the wagon; I mean, I can actually cook [other things] now, and I doubt that I could go back to eating it as much as I used to, but the waves of nostalgia that hit me at lunch were intoxicating, and Mac&Cheese will definitelyΒ be making more regular appearances in the future.
Enjoy the start of your weekend, loves π
. – . – . – .
What food(s) bring back memories of your younger self?Β
Do you still eat them now? Healthier variations?
Jessy (squeezetheday)
Crepes for me. They have always been my favourite food, when I got out of hospital where I couldn’t eat for 2 days, my mom had to immediately make me some and I ate 11 of them, haha. I still do eat the occasionally, but nowadays I prefer pancakes and yes, I guess you could call them healthified. I went through phases with food, like for a while I ate cereal for breakfast every day, next it was Nutella, etc.
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
I love crepes! My mom would always make them on the weekends when I was younger, and I loved them with cream cheese and jam. I’m gonna have to get the recipe from her and start making them myself, because I miss them!
Jessy (squeezetheday)
Flipping crepes in the air was one of the first kitchen skills I’ve learned, haha. When I was younger I always ate them with some kind of chocolate hazelnut spread (like Nutella), but nowadays I usually eat them (or pancakes aka ”American crepes”) with quark+fruit. Last time I tried them with Nutella and bilberries – delicious! They’re also crazy good with walnuts. π
I’ve never had real mac’n’cheese, but I would love to try it, because I love pasta and I love cheese, so it seems like something right up my alley. Yesterday I stumbled upon this via foodgawker and my mouth is still watering!
leelu201
Foods the remind me of my childhood – that would be a polish dish called Pierogi. They’re a TON of work to make so I only eat them with my family on special occasions. I’m particularly partial to the ones stuffed with mushrooms and no, I don’t “healthify” them in any way.
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Ahhh pierogies. They totally remind me of my childhood as well. We’re Polish, so my mom used to make them a lot when I was younger. Now they only come out for the special occasions, too, because she doesn’t have time anymore π

Grilled cheese & tomato soup was my childhood heartwarmin lunch.
Havent had it since i got a butchured grease-ladden version at inpatient π
I must be reunited with a good experience!
I also had KD, did you always se annies?
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Not always, no. I really enjoyed KD as well.
Ashley
wow 6 more days!! Time is really flying by but im so excited for you π Rice and gravy was all i ate as a kid and ED seperated us as well π Maybe its time we are reunited too!!
Meg (A Dash of Meg)
Mac and Cheese definitely reminds me of my younger self. I have really wanted to recreate a new “healthified” version of my old favourite meal, but still need to do it π Another meal that reminds me of my childhood is grilled cheese π I am thinking of a cheddar and apple sandwich soon? I saw it at Cafe One today (one of my favourite restaurants) and thought it sounded tasty π
Khushboo Thadani
LOVE mac & cheese, especially Easy Mac! It tastes so processed yet oh so delicious!
Meg (A Dash of Meg)
Easy Mac was my staple in high school!
Lenna (veganlenna)
Enjoy that Mac and cheese, it looks delicious! And hooray, six days and you are in your new flat, thatΒ΄s pretty exciting!
Katherine
yummy! amy’s are the best! and for me it’s always been ice cream.
also those neon-pink & white / sprinkle covered animal cookies…which i tried again recently and could not understand how i ever enjoyed them.
Sarina
Ahh I used to love Kraft Mac & Cheese too.. the big blue box. I haven’t had it for years. One day again I will… I suspect maybe a hangover day will do it π
Favourite nostalgic childhood meal would have to be pasta (specifically gnocchi) or rice with tomato sauce, grated cheese and margarine. Yum, such comforting childhood tastes and memories! Occassionally I’ll have a spoonful of that combo now but never an entire bowl.
I’m so excited for you to have broken Mac & Cheese in again!
Have fun packing… it’s exciting! And a great way to have a good closet cleanse!
haveasliceofkatypie
That mac & cheese looks so good! Ya know, I’ve only ever had it once and it was the real deal. Oh my, it was delicious! My family are just not into making things like that so I had never had it until I was 18.
Foods that bring back memories of my younger self would be lasagne and cauliflower cheese. My Mum would make the best lasagne and cauliflower cheese. Sadly, my Mum doesn’t make these things anymore coz she lives far away from us kids but maybe one day I’ll make her fix some up for me (as long as they don’t have cream in them which might be hard to do π
YAY for the big move! I’m so excited for you π

I have to say I was never a fan of Mac n Cheese. I could never stand the fake cheesy taste.
Or maybe the ones I tried when young were just really bad.
It must have felt good to ‘allow’ yourself to have something you restricted yourself from earlier π
Hmm foods that bring back memories is probably Mum’s fried rice and fairy bread π
almostveggirlie
Yay, 6 days!!!! That’s so close! Hope you don’t get too stressed out with packing and such.
I used to be obsessed with candy. Halloween was my favorite holiday! I didn’t honestly eat it that much, but one of my favorite kinds was the sour gummy Lifesavers. Now I have sour gummy multivitamins, so it’s like “candy” that’s good for me haha π
Meg (A Dash of Meg)
Gummy Multivitamins!? π That’s so cute π What a great alternative π
Squirrel Snackin'
I used to loveee mac n cheese too..actually I still do. π Annie’s white cheddar shells are a tasty version. I actually ALMOST made a box of Kraft mac n cheese today because I’ve been ravenous and snacking all day. lol
Lauren A.
awe, i love annie’s shells and cheddar. it is especially good with green peas too! i’m guilty of eating the whole box in ONE sitting! totally reminds me of my childhood.
Kaila @healthyhelperblog!
Mmmm ya got me craving some mac like mad girl!!! I am gonna have to whip some of that up ASAP!!!
Katie
6 days! wow!! YAY! So exciting! I bet you are so busy getting stuff ready !
Never tried that Mac and Cheese! I love Kraft mac and cheese, that reminds me of my childhood! Used to eat that a lot!
Love ya girl! Have a wonderful night! xoxo
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes
I actually never liked Mac and Cheese as a kid, and still don’t eat it much! Happy Friday to cha though. WOOT 6 more days π
lapiattini
Cinnamon Toast Crunch reminds me of growing up! Mac and Cheese too- in the blue Kraft box. I still keep a box in my cabinet for, you, know, throwbacks π
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
CInnamon Toast Crunch was one of my absolute favorites too π
Holly
We love these! So fun and fast. Great for kids too!
Holly @ Naturally Sweet Recipes
cleaneatingchelsey
Mac n Cheese is definitely a childhood memory envoking food for me – I always made it for myself, would make a huge bowl, and then sit on the couch to enjoy it. So good.
lifttorun
I would eat like a whole box of mac and cheese. That’s when I was heavy though. Still.
Enter ED, and cheese + noodles = I do not eat.
Now I’ll eat pasta and cheese. It’s not going to kill me. Besides, runners need pasta. It’s what we do.
Alexandra
AAHHHH 6 DAYS! WOO! π
Mac and cheese definitely reminds me of childhood–same with gushers, fruit by the foot, chicken nuggets, poptarts, apples with pb, and huge bowls of Corn Flakes cereal haha I don’t really like poptarts any more since I kinda OD’ed on them as a kid, but every once in awhile I love to indulge in a sugar rush with some gushers! π
Best of luck packing my friend!!
Meg (A Dash of Meg)
poptarts says childhood for sure! π

I was cutting up really ripe bananas last night to stick in the freezer, and it gave me a little flashback to being small and how my mum would sometimes slice a banana into a bowl, pour some milk over and give it to me to eat as a snack. It made me have a sudden craving for a simple milk+banana combo.
I have to admit, I think I’ve only ever had mac + cheese three times in my life, and it confused me when people said it was easy to make…until I realised you could make it from a box ;). We never had that over here growing up. Mind, for a while I lived off meals of plain pasta with grated cheese and a side of peas. I was a somewhat finicky child. You’ve kind of made me want pasta-cheese-and-peas now! I keep trying to like pasta, but the texture just weirds me out now.
Good luck with getting organised for your move! I always end up leaving the packing til the day before (or morning of) a move. It’s amazing how quick you can pack when you have to ;).
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Haha to be honest, I think that’s what I’m going to end up doing… frantically shoving everything into boxes/suitcases the night before I move and hoping for the best.
spectacuLAUR
That’s the same food I would choose from my childhood. One of them anyway. It’s my favorite thing to eat. My mom makes a “healthier” version and since then I’ve tried to make even healthier ones… But since my injury I haven’t had it. It’s hard for me to order it out anymore. I’ll pretty much only eat it if i make it or if I eat a bite or two of my mothers. It’s gotta have whole wheat noodles and not full-fat cheese, for sure. ugh. fml. ha
mindrunningwild
Yes Annies!! I grew up on that stuff and I’ve been way too afraid to try it although my siblings have it all the time. I think I should just man up and make myself a box sometime, what could it hurt? Also quesadillas with bean dip!! mmm
Mary @ Bites and Bliss
We used to make velveeta mac and cheese with those shells and it was ammmazing. not the healthiest, but I’d still eat the entire pan by myself in 1 sitting. the shells are so much better than the macaroni noodles. π
Meg (A Dash of Meg)
Velveeta mac and cheese is such a treat! π
2tightlywound
I used to absolutely love New England Clam Chowder, and now I am petrified of it… Anything that is high in fat that I used to love as a kid (with the exception of nuts and nut butters, because, hello, it’s just so freakin’ delicious) is now “off-limits.”
I’m glad you and Mac & Cheese found each other again. May you have a long, healthy relationship π
(And so excited for you! Six days!)
sarah
Aaaaand now I’m craving mac’n cheese- I swear you could take a piccie of poop and I’d think it looks delish( haha, I took it too far) but seriously your pictures are always drool worthy.
There are TONS of food that bring back memories for me, ill just say a soft boiled egg( in an egg cup) with toast soldiers to dip in, and baked beans , which I still love now. My dad used to make this really weird mussel broth/ soup which I used to eat by the bowlful, but now the thought of it kinda makes me gag!
Eeee, so not long to the move now!
Xxx
Sarah - feeedingbrainandbody
Oh my goodness, already only 6 days! Time has sure flown by, I remember when you just broke the news! Mac and cheese is definitely one of those foods that bring back childhood memories for me. My mom would make it for dinner when she was looking for something fast and cheap (read: often!) The food that brings back the most memories of my childhood is Lipton Chicken Noodle Soup! I would eat the entire package all to myself, even though it was supposed to serve four people. π
In Sweetness and In Health
Woo hoo for 6 days!!! That’s so close! I love mac and cheese! I haven’t had it in a really long time, I should buy some asap :). I definitely think that pancakes, and grilled cheese bring me back to my younger self. I make pancakes healthier and I don’t eat grilled cheese all that often anymore, but if I do I make it healthier too!
teeneatlive
Ahhhh! 6 days!! So excited for you!! Annie’s is the BEST macaroni and cheese. I miss their Mexican version though, it was the bestest (Sometime I wish that was an actual word). And I cracked up at the Peas and Carrots reference…Forrest Gump!! HAH!
missymiller
PBJ and I are getting re-aquainted.
I have such love for PBJ in ALL forms and my healthy variations are TOO DIE FOR. Yet. I am still working up to having one straight up on bread (ezekiel, not the wrap) with a glass of chocolate milk. Till then? My PBJ fetish is taking very splendiforous recreations.
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance
As a child, I used to LOVELOVELOVE Nilla Wafers! I used to scrape out the inside with my teeth and make them into hollow boats, then suck on the rest of cookie until it dissolved in my mouth. (I’m sorry, TMI?)
I sadly don’t eat them anymore– especially not now that I’m not allowed to have wheat. But hot damn those babies were fantastic!
Lilly
6 days, woo hoo π I ate tons of annies shells and cheese when I was younger, and I was always super happy when my mom bought the peace sign ones haha they came in a tie dye box, I loved it! I always eat the whole box at a time, wait… there is more than one serving in there? π seems like one to me. I still eat a ton of things I did growing up, but my rice, butter, and mango combo is not as appealing anymore, I was odd. Butternut squash ravioli with pesto always reminds me of growing up, I ate that by the TON!
Ma Ma Megan
When I was younger it was top ramen. All day everyday, I was also kind of the queen of making just perfect. (sounds weird I mean how hard is it to cook ramen?!) But all the neighbor kiddies would come over to eat MY ramen!
Unfortunately I ate SO much of it that the desire to eat it poofed when i hit high school. Nothing ED related I just got completely sick of it π
Mac ‘n cheese was always a close second to me. (Ramen was faster to make though haha) I’ve seen those Annie’s mac ‘n cheeses! I now really want to pick up a box π
Abby (Animating Abby)
I havent had Mac & Cheese for years either! Like you, I used to live off of it. Well… I lived off all things cheesy π Unfortunately, now I have a weird and irrational fear of pasta. I should try some macaroni in the future to be “reunited” and get over my fear.
Hmm… chicken brings back memories from when I was younger. It didn’t matter if I went to an Italian, Chinese, or Mexican restaurant — I’d always order chicken! I don’t eat any now though because the only meat that I consume is fish. I think I ate all of the chicken I was meant to eat in my life π
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate
I LOVE Annie’s Mac and Cheese! Totally buying some this weekend π
Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner)
YAAAY 6 days!! I am SO excited for you!!
Mmm mac and cheese is GOOD!! When I was a kid, I used to have Triple Decker Pizza Sandwiches every Saturday. Three mini pizzas as a sandwich filling. I think I need to bring that one back π
VeggieGirl
WOOOOT 6 days! So close! π
