Intros are hard.
I’ve already spent something like 20 minutes trying to come up with an intro to this post, and I’m no closer now than I was when I started. Well, that’s only partially true. The truth is that I spent about 20 seconds trying to come up with an intro before getting distracted by YouTube… and Google… and my inbox… but that’s not the point. The point is, I’m still not quite sure how to start and this needs to get this done, so we’re just going to skip the formalities and drive dive right in to everything.
I think I may have opened Pandora’s Box, and I’m not talking about the adorable charm bracelets…
I’m talking about the fact that I may or may not have introduced my mom to the wonderfully addicting black hole that is Sephora. Let me play it out for you. So yesterday was Mother’s Day…
We were originally planning to head out to the lake and do some BBQing, but I guess no one was really feeling it because the clouds rolled in and we pretty much instantly used that as an excuse to stay home. No problem, we had backup plans – or at least we made some up as we went along.
Instead of time at the lake, we decided to spend some time at the mall – a girl’s day shopping date, if you will. So after scarfing down some lunch (everyone knows you shouldn’t go shopping on an empty stomach), we headed out to see what the wonderful world of retail had to offer.
Turns out, not much. I don’t know if it’s just that strange in-betweeny time of the year, but we honestly didn’t come across anything that caught our eyes.Β That is, until we went to Sephora…
Now, you guys know I love all things beauty related. To be honest, I think the beauty junkie side of me is becoming a lot more dominant than the foodie side of me. But I digress. The point is, I could talk makeup for hours on end with anyone who’s willing to listen.Β My mom, on the other hand, likes makeup, but keeps things pretty basic. That’s okay. I can worth with basic, especially with Urban Decay’s help…
Long story short, we walked out of Sephora a little over an hour later with plenty of goodies in tow, and my mom is already talking about going back.Β What have I done?!
After that, we had a nice chat over coffee…
… before heading home for dinner and a movie. Brave was on TV, and my mom had never seen it so I figured watching it together would be the perfect way to end Mother’s Day.
The only problem was that we both ended up bawling our eyes out. Dang Disney tear-jerkers. Ahh well, it was still a marvelous Mother’s Day.
Happy Monday, friends!
. – . – . – .
What did you do for Mother’s Day?
Do movies make you cry? I’m not usually a crier, but dang… this one got me good.
Favorite Disney Pixar film? Finding Nemo or Wall-E.
Lisa @ Live and Be Awesome
Brave is the perfect Mother’s Day movie!
When it comes to make-up I never wear a whole lot, but I do love all the fun products at Mac and Sephora. So easy to rack up a huge bill there, though!
Chelsea
OMG that store! I stay as far away as possible for the sake of my wallet, but some times even I’m not strong enough to resist it’s siren’s call! However, when it comes to my mom and I getting in some quality, dollar-dropping bonding/shopping time, Target is definitely our go-to place! Everything from our favorite snack foods to some cute new clothes – all in one convenient location π Glad you guys had a wonderful mother’s day!
Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen
What a fun way to celebrate Mother’s Day! I’m a huge fan of makeup and all things Sephora. Have you been to Ulta? It’s like CVS + Sephora and a little cheaper I think. I love Urban Decay. They make my favorite eye liner that goes on like a marker. I know what you mean about favoring beauty and such over food sometimes. I feel like that with fashion! Have a great Monday Amanda!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
We don’t have Ulta up here π It’s on my list of places to visit when I’m down in the States, but for some reason, no one I go with shares my affinity for shopping for makeup over seeing the sights π
Courtney
Girl, you will LOVE the Naked Basics palette! It is incredible π
Katie @ KatieEnPursuit
Ohhhhh Sephora…totally a Pandora’s box, I could walk in there & walk out days later & homeless from loosing all my money, such a fun store. Gosh, I was just talking the other day how I hadn’t seen a Disney or Pixar film in awhile, might need to change that π
Jo @ LivingMintGreen
Aw! I love that you & your mom went on a Sephora shopping date – how fun! It’s definitely a black hole – the last time I went was in Vegas last year – they had a live D!!
We went to my parents house for a BBQ on Saturday, then yesterday my mom and I went greenhouse shopping. Later on, Courts Mom came over & we made BBQ bison burgers. I gave her Spirit Junkie + wine as a gift.
I LOOOOVED Wreck It Ralph!
Molly@This Life Is Sparkling
Shopping with mom + starbucks + a movie? Sounds like a marvelous day π Happy Monday Amanda!
Maria @ Pappa Don't Preach
My mom is not into makeup. She tried to be when I was younger, but she does not have a clue what to do with eyeshadow and insists she is allergic to mascara. Naturally, growing up, I had to teach myself how to apply makeup properly, with many misfortunes along the way. I did end up getting my makeup artist certification, worked at Origins through college and even as seasonal help at Sephora when I was working full time, just because I could. not. get. enough. It’s an easy addiction and I don’t recommend seeking any sort of remedy, other than trying out every new makeup trend thats out there.
If you need recommendations… there are a couple things you absolutely NEED. 1. Nars blush in orgasm. If you can score the bronzer/blush duo, do it. 2. Dior Show Mascara. I actually can’t wear it, because I AM allergic.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Ohhh a fellow beauty junkie!! <3 I actually seriously considered becoming a makeup artist back in the day. I loooooved experimenting with different looks, and usually ended up wearing seriously dramatic works that were probably a little too much for school π All in good fun though π I haven't tried Dior Show, but I do love Nars' Orgasm and Laguna. Have you tried any of the Tarte Amazonian clay blushes? I've been considering picking one of those up because I've heard so many good things.
molly @ heart, sole & cereal
mother’s day posts are making me so HAPPY because i am always happy when girls get to hang with their moms but man i wish i could have spent the day with mine. looks like you had an amazing day – i’m definitely not a makeup girl but even i can get called by the siren song of sephora. it’s an expensive habit though so it’s one i try my best to avoid.
Emily
I HATE INTROS. haha. I seriously dread coming up with them.
Looks like you had a perfect weekend, lady. Sephora is my absolute weakness…along with Starbucks. Hey, at least we’re not alone. (:
PS: You’re going to love the Naked Basics palette.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It was actually my mom that got it. I have both Naked 1 and 2 so I didn’t really want to invest in another neutral palette just yet. My mom is really big on mattes, which is why I suggested it for her. Buuuut if I’m being honest, I’ll probably end up buying it too because I’m kind of a sucker for good neutrals… and it’s so tiny and cute!
sara @ fitcupcaker
sounds like an awesome mothers day! Some of those disney movies always make me cry, dang them! We went out for mothers day on friday night since my mom worked and then I cooked dinner last night for my mother in law so she didnt have to! It was a good day!
Missy
That sounds like the best Mother’s Day plans! So cute that you were able to turn her on to one of your passions! It’s like…some things we “get” from our Mothers but some things THEY get from US! It’s warm fuzzy to think about huh?
I’ve been know to cry at movies, yes m’am.
One of the more recent ones may or may not have had Miley Cyrus in it *blush*
Favorite Disney Pixar? Osh… Hard! But UP! was amazing (I cried).
Khushboo
Hahah your poor mom- she doesn’t know what’s hit her wallet ;)! I’m usually good about beauty buys in that I limit how often I stock up butttt I’m sure my purchases per shopping trip compensate for my infrequent trips! I’ve never seen Brave but is it weird that I love crying in movies- I sound like such a sap but it’s such a cathartic feeling! The last movie I bawled my eyes out in was Django Unchained- I just couldn’t stop!
Hope your Monday is going marvellous, Amanda!!
Lauren
Ahh, I love Disney movies! My favorite is probably Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story for Pixar… or Up – which is an extremely sad movie. Lol. I love getting my mom hooked on things I love because it makes them ten times more enjoyable. Recently, she’s becoming quite the foodie and we’ve ventured to Wegmans more times than I can count in the passed year. Also, she’s now addicted to frozen yogurt, Keurig, and Dunkin’ Donuts. Hooray! I’m happy to hear you had a nice mother’s day despite the weather ruining your plans. Maybe things were meant to be this way? π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I have a feeling that I’m turning my mom into a foodie as well – she actually texts me pictures of her meals sometimes and asks me what I think π It’s good to see healthy habits rubbing off on her though.
Brittany
BAHA!! I laugh be cause I SO cried at that movie too!! When her mom was stuck in the bear and couldn’t change back right away..I lost it. I almost always loose it with Disney movies..THEY GET ME!! Ohh man your mama is in for it now getting sucked into that hole!! Just think of this as prime bonding time whenever one of you needs to go get more makeup! HA!
Andrea
So nice that you spent the whole day with your mom for Mother’s Day π I made breakfast for our Mother’s Day – cinnamon and orange rolls, strawberries, coffee, and bacon for the meat-eaters π I may have ate far too many cinnamon and orange rolls. But hey, it was a special occasion, right?! π
Alex @ therunwithin
the first time I watched Brave was in the theaters with my mom. It was such a heart warming movie that yes, made me tear up. No lie there.
Ashlee@HisnHers
I LOVE my Naked palette! I have had it for almost 2 years and am JUST starting to see the metal under 1 of my fvorite colors. It’s totally worth the money.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Definitely! All my other eyeshadows pretty much became obsolete as soon as I bought that palette. And did you hit pan on Half Baked, by any chance? That’s the one that sees the most action around here…
Ashlee
Virgin is the one that hit bottom BUT half baked is definitely hitting next. Love that one!
Caitlin
Haha that’s awesome that you and your mom had such a nice day! My mum had to work unfortunately, but we are going to do a girls day with mani/pedis and a movie soon! You two sound like my mum and i whenever we go shopping…major damage is usually done with clothes π love those days!
Victoria @ Reluctantly Skinny
I cry at commercials…such a baby! Toy Story has to be the worst…the third one..good god, I was hysterical. Favorite Disney movie has to still be Sleeping Beauty or Finding Nemo, but I’ve been dying to see Brave, it’s probably the only Disney movie I don’t own.
Ashley @ Life and Fitness
I’m usually not a big crier at movies. The Notebook has gotten me. Ahhhh Ryan Gosling! But back to the point, I love having a girl’s day with my mom. Shopping and coffee are our fav things.
Miss Polkadot
Don’t even get me started on HOW hard to write I find intros … Let’s just say I’ve never liked it and have come to try beginning whichever text I have to write with the main part/middle.
I’m happy to hear you and your mum had a lovely Mother’s Day filled with girly activities. I didn’t get to spend the day with mine but visited my parents from Thursday to Saturday.
Thanks for reminding me I have yet – bad, I know – to watch Brave. It being tear-inducing, though, might keep me from watching it alone so I’ll have to wait until the next movie night with my mum or a friend. What do you think? Yes to Finding Nemo being the cutest movie so far!
We don’t have Sephora around here but it sounds like we’re missing out on a lot. So cute you got your mum addicted, too. That flower necklace is gorgeous! Which brand is it by?
Happy Monday, Amanda!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m the complete opposite – I actually prefer watching tear-jerker movies alone because I don’t like people seeing me cry. If it’s any consolation, it was tear-jerking in a happy way π As for the necklace, I don’t think it has a brand… my mom just picked it up from a department store we have here in Canada, The Bay.
Cori @ olivetorun
I watched Brave with my nieces and nephew shortly after it came out on DVD. It was so cute to watch their reactions… my oldest niece (she’s 3) actually got emotional with the bear transformation scene. So sweet to see her compassion.
Looks like quite a successful Mother’s Day! I’m glad you got to spend time with your mama!
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom
I’m having that issue too with shopping! The last few times I have gone out I have found NOTHING worth spending money on. Always so disappointing. My mom lives in IL and I live in FL, so I called her in the morning to wish her happy mother’s day and then I went to the beach because I know that’s what she would have wanted to do if she was in FL. Tough life. My sister sent me pictures of her opening my present, so that was nice. I cry at movies all the time…I cry at TV..I cry at books..I cry at life. I’m a crier. Fave Disney Pixar is probably Monsters, Inc. or Nemo! I do love Wall-E though… I told my students last summer that the major lesson I learned from Wall-E is reduce, reuse, recycle or you’ll get fat. Emphasis on the three R’s though
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
I just love the movie Brave. It is so inspiring for women of EVERY age! π
Christina @Thetinyrunner
Sounds like a great Mothers Day! My sisters and I took my mom out for lunch and spent the day with her! Have you used foundation from Sephora before? I am looking for some to wear in my wedding- so far I have only tried MAC.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I have! The Makeup Forever HD foundation is really good, especially if you need something that’s going to look amazing in pictures. That one on top of the Too Faced primer will give you a pretty flawless complexion π
De @ Cooking for the Other Half
I am dying to see Brave!
My fav Pixar movie is definitely Finding Nemo. Orrrrr Toy Story 3. Hmm.
Sephora is such an addiction for me. There’s no way you can go in there without buying anything!
Hollie
I just don’t write intros anymore to my posts..it’s certainly easier that way. LOL. I really like that pandora box. I’ve gotten quite a few charms but never gotten a box like that so I’m a wee bit jealous. I honestly get all of my makeup at Nordstrom or Ulta. Nordstom for MAC and Ulta for other random things.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
In my defence… we don’t have either Nordstrom or Ulta up here. That being said, we do have other department and drug stores π
Sarah @PickyRunner
Definitely a marvelous mother’s day! I got a pandora bracelet for senior year high school graduation and I wear it every day. I like to keep it simple though with just one charm on it (a boat or an anchor… it varies). I wish I was home for mother’s day but I won’t be back in New England until Thursday so I sent my mom flowers and hoped that was enough! Spending a day with moms always makes life marvelous!
Viviane
I’ve been thinking about buying an Urban Decay eye palette, I just can’t make up my mind between Naked 1 and Naked 2!!! What are your thoughts on them?
I love Wall-E but talk about a Disney tear-jerker, can’t watch it without crying all the way throughout the credits!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You definitely can’t go wrong with either Naked 1 or Naked 2. Both are really great quality, and both have plenty of shadows that pretty much eliminate the need to turn to other eyeshadows if you’re just going for a neutral look. The main difference between the two is that Naked 1 has warmer shades, while Naked 2 is on the cooler side. So it really depends on what your skin tone is, and if you’re looking for something to compliment it or balance it out.
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles
I’ve never seen brave, but Kevin McKidd from Grey’s Anatomy is in it, and that’s reason enough for me to put it on my to-watch list!
My favorite Disney Pixar movie is either Wall-E or Up. I definitely have cried during both. Many times. Also the Notebook. I can’t watch that movie without bawling. (I cry a lot during movies. And TV shows. It’s a little ridiculous.)
Alyssa @ Road to RD
Sounds like a wonderful Mother’s Day! I love Sephora but they’re too expensive for me. They make a good treat though!
Karey @ Nutty About Health
Sounds like a super-sweet Mother’s Day! I’ve never been to Sephora (not much of a make-up kinda girl), but have been hearing a ton about it lately. I’m intrigued.
My mom worked all weekend (I’ll see her tomorrow), so I stayed home & did homework while my husband went to his mom’s for a BBQ. I’d say your day was SO much more fun! π
Ari
You spent an hour with your mom in Sephora? That’s kinda awesome! Once my mom and I did a Trish McAvoy (or however you spell that) makeover and she wanted to buy all the things! but she would never be like that in Sephora. Shame because there’s a few things I’d love to get.
By the way, that card is adorable!
Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness
What a perfect mothers day!! I’ve wanted to see Brave for forever, I need to watch it! I love a good tear-jerker. To be honest I’m not much of a crier, and this might be tmi, but when its that time of the month, i will cry over anything. A cute commercial? check. a particularly good love song? check. any movie with anything that resembles a moral or a puppy? check and check. My favorite pixar movie is the Incredibles. I could watch that movie every day and not get sick of it.
And heck yeah intros are hard, and its about time someone said so π Enjoy the rest of your day!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Awwr The Incredibles! That’s my dad’s favorite one, and definitely near the top of my list.
Happy Monday, girlie!
P
Brave is an awesome movie to watch on Mother’s Day. Glad you had a great one :)!
Lucie
Oh, we have a similar shop in Switzerland called Douglas and it’s IMPOSSIBLE for me to walk out without a ton more goodies in my bag than I intended to buy. I am addicted.
It sounds like such a perfect mother’s day you two had!! My Mom was on vacation so we didn’t get to celebrate.
Finding Nemo – hands down!
Happy Monday love!
Carly @ Snack Therapy
Aw! Happy Mama’s Day to your mom :). Sephora is sooooo dangerous. I can spend a scary amount of money in there, and like your mom, I’m pretty basic when it come to makeup! I can’t even imagine what a makeup aficionado like you must be like in there!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Think sugar-loving kid in a candy store…. x1000 π―
Lisa
Haha, intros are the worst part of posts for sure! I always hate writing them.
Sephora is perfect for a Mom’s celebration! That’s what my Mom and I will probably do next weekend! Since we can’t celebrate until then. That and pedicures! Always.
Now I can’t wait to go, since your post made me crave Sephora things like crazy. It’s been like 2 weeks since I’ve been there. Too long, right;)
I still haven’t seen Brave! I think I need too!
Movies always make me cry, well so do commercials, so I must just be super sensitive.
So glad you had a great weekend with your Mama!
Happy Monday love!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Two weeks is definitely too long! Although I’ve been trying to increase the time between my visits to save my poor wallet some grief. It’s still a work-in-progres. Any idea what you’re going to go in there looking for?
Lisa
No real clue yet! Probably for some new lip glosses or lipsticks (you can never have enough) π maybe some body washes too! Basically anything, I’m always open minded with Sephora haha. Even though I have to wait an extra week to go now.
Sara @ Magia e Pasta
I watched Brave last night, too! I wasn’t with my mom (she lives on the other side of the country), but I thought it appropriate because of Mother’s Day. Such a sweet story, I loved it!
