This thick and creamy oatmeal cookie dough smoothie is reminiscent of a comforting oatmeal cookie!
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not exactly in the know when it comes to what’s hip and trendy these days. I don’t read the news because it’s full of nothing but doom and gloom; I can’t talk to you about what’s going on in The Bachelor because I don’t have cable; and I can’t tell you what songs are topping the charts because I don’t listen to the radio. Heck, I didn’t even know which teams were playing in the Superbowl this year until I actually sat down and asked my dad “who the guys in orange” were, and I just found out that the Olympics start this Friday. Crazy.
That being said, it should come as no surprise that my body isn’t exactly up to speed in what’s going on around it either. It craves things that aren’t typical for the temperatures and seasons, asking for hot foods in the middle of summer and cold foods in the middle of winter… and lately, the cold food it’s been asking for has been smoothies…
Over the past couple of weeks, my smoothie obsession has come back with a vengeance, and I’ve been having at least one a day — sometimes even two. I’m picky when it comes to what I’ll guzzle down, though — I mean, a girl’s gotta have her standards, right?
First, my smoothies have to be thick enough so that I have a hard time sucking them up through a straw — bonus points if I have to bust out a spoon. They also has to be loaded, not only with healthy and wholesome ingredients, but plenty of healthy and wholesome ingredients. I used to be wary of drinking my calories because I was afraid the endeavour would do nothing to satisfy my hunger and only leave me prowling the kitchen in search of something more, and while that’s definitely happened on a handful of occasions, it was mostly because I was doing it all wrong…
The recipe I’m sharing with you today is right in every possible way, with each ingredient coming together to create a cold, creamy, thick smoothie that’s oh-so-satisfying. As an added bonus, it tastes like oatmeal cookie dough, and you can never go wrong with oatmeal cookie dough. This recipe has actually been up on Spoons for a little while now, but I only mentioned it in passing so I figured it was high time to give it a little more attention…

What a perfect idea! I’ve tried cookie dough smoothies and oatmeal smoothies but never once did it occur to me to combine them into one – genius in its inevitability!

This smoothie tastes EXACTLY like my banana bread batter – and even has a very similar texture!
This really should have been named Banana Bread Smoothie!

Cant wait to try this recipe! I discovered your website a few days ago, and am really enjoying it – i have a list of recipes to try now! I have been hesitant tp put oats in my smoothies because one website talked about how hard they are to digest when dry and uncooked, and suggested soaking them before using in a smoothie. Any thoughts on that in general? (i realize for flavor, they need to be uncooked and unsoaked in this recipe).
I see that many people said they use frozen bananas in their smoothies. I am not supposed to eat bananas because they are in the top five foods that trigger migraines. I love berries, and use a lot of blueberries and strawberries (probably the combo in one of my two smoothies per day). I do love thick creamy smoothies though! I had a smoothie with avocado and blueberries today that was very thick – but not very sweet (good, but not delicious).
So i would love to see more recipes for creamy smoothies that do not require banana. Anything different is good. I like to rotate through healthy recipes so that i dont get tired of smoothies! I have not started doing green smoothies yet, but do make chia seed gel sometimes to use as thickener.
*Question: i saw your comment re xantham gum above re causing GI issues if used a lot. I just ordered some but have not tried it yet. Are there alternatives that are better – guar gum or otherwise?? Do you suggest limiting its use to couple times/week or maybe just avoid it as a staple ingredient? I am trying to limit calories and make the healthiest smoothies i can, but things like banana, avocado, certain yogurts, etc. add calories (and sugar or fat)… Unfortunately…

Forgive me if this has been asked a thousand times…I am terrible at figuring it out. What is the calorie count on this smoothie that I am dying to try!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hi Jennifer! I don’t calculate the nutritional info in my recipes, but if you’re interested, you can use the recipe calculator at My Fitness Pal to figure it out easily — http://www.myfitnesspal.com/recipe/calculator

Wow! I should have calculated calories before I made this. I did not realize it was about an 8 oz. smoothie – with almost 400 calories packed in…

Hi Amanda,
Did I see you reference THM for this? I’m just wondering about the amts of banana and oats. This smoothie looks amazing!

I just made this smoothie, but used peanut butter instead of the almond butter. I have to say it tastes amazing! The oats really do add a nutty flavor, and it does taste like cookie dough, but I’m not sure what kind of cookie. As for texture, this smoothie is really wonderful and creamy and fills me up. I substituted vanilla protein powder will vanilla extract, but be careful not to add to much! The banana adds a wonderful sweetness without actually tasting too much like bananas.

This looks amazing! <3 Cookie dough!!!! But does the oats have to be soaked overrnight or do I pop it in the blender raw? Thank you! 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You can just pop them in the blender raw 🙂 Sometimes I’ll whip it up the night before and leave it in the fridge because the oats really thicken up the smoothie the longer they sit, but they’re fine to drink straight away.

I substituted cooked acorn squash 1/2 for the banana. This was quite tasty!

Okay so not even sure you’ll read this since it’s an older post…buuuut I was just looking through some of your recipes to pin which led me to creep all of Pinterest for your stuff aaaaaand HOLY SHIT (excuse my language) but this smoothie is EVERYWHERE!!! Over 7K pins (<– you see that?!?!). Obviously you have. But still. I'm just so excited for you.
Now if my bananas could just hurry up and ripen, that'd be great.
OKAY BYE.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Awwr thanks lady! And for the record… I do happen to have ripe bananas, and Edmonton is only a 3 hour plane ride away 😛

This is a good recipe! I used lots of cinnamon and omitted the protein powder. I think next time I’ll add a little cocoa powder!
Kristin
Just made this and… YUM!! Tastes just like an oatmeal cookie!!
