This thick and creamy oatmeal cookie dough smoothie is reminiscent of a comforting oatmeal cookie!
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not exactly in the know when it comes to what’s hip and trendy these days. I don’t read the news because it’s full of nothing but doom and gloom; I can’t talk to you about what’s going on in The Bachelor because I don’t have cable; and I can’t tell you what songs are topping the charts because I don’t listen to the radio. Heck, I didn’t even know which teams were playing in the Superbowl this year until I actually sat down and asked my dad “who the guys in orange” were, and I just found out that the Olympics start this Friday. Crazy.
That being said, it should come as no surprise that my body isn’t exactly up to speed in what’s going on around it either. It craves things that aren’t typical for the temperatures and seasons, asking for hot foods in the middle of summer and cold foods in the middle of winter… and lately, the cold food it’s been asking for has been smoothies…
Over the past couple of weeks, my smoothie obsession has come back with a vengeance, and I’ve been having at least one a day — sometimes even two. I’m picky when it comes to what I’ll guzzle down, though — I mean, a girl’s gotta have her standards, right?
First, my smoothies have to be thick enough so that I have a hard time sucking them up through a straw — bonus points if I have to bust out a spoon. They also has to be loaded, not only with healthy and wholesome ingredients, but plenty of healthy and wholesome ingredients. I used to be wary of drinking my calories because I was afraid the endeavour would do nothing to satisfy my hunger and only leave me prowling the kitchen in search of something more, and while that’s definitely happened on a handful of occasions, it was mostly because I was doing it all wrong…
The recipe I’m sharing with you today is right in every possible way, with each ingredient coming together to create a cold, creamy, thick smoothie that’s oh-so-satisfying. As an added bonus, it tastes like oatmeal cookie dough, and you can never go wrong with oatmeal cookie dough. This recipe has actually been up on Spoons for a little while now, but I only mentioned it in passing so I figured it was high time to give it a little more attention…
I’d love to know if you make this (or any!) recipe! Tag @runwithspoons on Instagram and Twitter, and be sure to subscribe to our mailing list to receive more healthy and delicious recipes straight to your inbox!

Natalie @ lovenataliemarie
Oh my goodness girl. Cookie dough.. one of my biggest weaknesses. Smoothies? I love em. Put them together? You just created a killer combo. π
Looks like I know what I’ll be whipping up in the near future. π
You my darling, are a genius.
Suzanne @ hello, veggy!
I reaaaaaaly like thick smoothies; I bet this one is a winner π I ALWAYS add spinach or a green of some kind!!
Katie @ Daily Cup of Kate
I am totally with you on the thickness of smoothies– I plan on making this tomorrow morning since I won’t have much time in the morning–thanks for sharing!!
sarah
Looks GOOD.
I remember back in the day when you were pretty into smoothies. And you posted the recipes for your tofu & avocado ones<- funny to think how… revolutionary(? Idk) adding those ingredients to a smoothie was then.
Now, everyone's doing it!
So you may not be 'in the know on what's hip & trendy', but I'd say you're one step ahead of the curve :),
There are lots of things of things I love to add to smoothies. Mango is a great fruit for them. Coconut flour or ground chia for thickness. And obveeeeiously nut butter ups the deliciousness factor. I'm yet to find ANYTHING that nut butter doesn't have this effect on though.
Xxx
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh goodness — I’m so impressed you remember those! I’ll have to make them again one of these days and see if I’m still as obsessed with them. And you’re definitely right about the nut butters — they make ALL things good.
Meg @ Meg Go Run
This looks really good! I usually only crave smoothies in the summer, so I will have to remember this one.
Tonya@Healthy, Fit, and Frugal
Wow that is my kind of smoothie! I seriously can’t wait to try this one. I just need some chia seeds. Hmmm, maybe I’ll just go ahead and skip the chia seeds. π
Alexis @ funrunning4life
I’m going to make this for dinner after my run tonight! I won’t get back until late, so I was looking for something quick and easy with some good nutrients. I’m drooling just thinking about it.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Have an awesome run, Alexis!
Mary Frances
Your blue background is just stunning! You had me at oatmeal cookie. I used to never get filled up with smoothies either – that’s before I discovered nut butters and oats. I’ve never got the combo right for a cookie flavor; I’ll be trying this asap. Haha, my smoothies are more like almost solid – I always eat them with a spoon!
sonia the mexigarian
I am seriously drooling over here over the smoothie pictures. That and shivering. Brrr. Smoothie standards must be thick, but drinkable full of healthy ingredients. banana is almost always in my smoothies. i have never had oats in my smoothie before but am willing to give it try π
Kat
YUMMY!! I love the addition of oats to a smoothie. Its seriously the only way I can drink them as a meal, otherwise there isn’t enough bulk to fill me up, even with yogurt AND protein powder in there. I need my carbs!
And I cant stand banana-less smoothies. I can never get them to taste right for some reason!!
Kristy @ Southern In Law
For a second I thought this was a post from CCK as the photos look so similar! A bit of a different style for you!
This smoothie sounds ah-maze-ing. I’m not much of a smoothie drinker which is probably because I’m either to lazy (to wash up the blender and everything) or have too many healthified baked goods around to devour π
Arman @ thebigmansworld
You should get a crown and a personal jester- A recipe which is NOT screaming Winter- i’m going to subconsciously tell myself this is personally created for all of us down Under π
Frozen fruit (especially a banana!) is a must- I’ve recently added oats too and they do become thick! I love sprinkling nuts on top. They got lost IN the smoothie!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Errβ¦ that’s right! I did! π Just for you, Mister π
Chelsey @ Powerhouse Fit Foodie
I don’t usually drink smoothies when it’s this cold out…but I think I will have to make an exception.
Brynn
OMG I am not even hungry and I want to go make this right now. YUM!!
annie @ chase that i love
The best part of an oatmeal smoothie is that it tastes like an actual oatmeal cookie. Add in chocolate chips, and I’m sold!
Caitlin
Ok, don’t hate me, but I don’t really like smoothies π I’m not a fan of bananas (unless they’re baked in bread or muffins or something…then I can do it), and every recipe I see uses them…so I just don’t eat them. I love milkshakes, though, and since those are obviously the same thing, I’ll tell you that I love adding chocolate chips to cookies’n’cream π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You can always make them with frozen berries instead π Blueberries are a particular favourite of mine. But then again, milkshakes are definitely tastierβ¦.
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
Yeah this pretty much sounds perfect!! Now I am going to have to start drinking green smoothies in the morning and making smoothies like this one for dessert in the evening! π
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama
You had me at cookie dough! Yum!
lauraagarwilson (keepinghealthygettingstylish)
That sounds amazing! You know I’m a huge smoothie fan, I think my must have ingredient is spinach!
Jay @ Supersonic Sunflower
I actually always add spinach to my smoothies. It is so bland that you can not even tell its there and its a great way for me to get more greens in my diet. π This one sounds delicious though! I will definitely have to CC you on this one.
karla @ finding my fit
i think you were reading my mind! i’ve been looking for a delicious smoothie recipe to make for breakfast this week. between this and a standard green smoothie I think I’m set.
She Rocks Fitness
YES! I cannot wait to make this sometime this week. This looks oh so good…Thanks for sharing!
Lauren
I must agree with you on craving weird foods according to temperature. My mom always laughs at me when I’m tanning outside with a bowl of hot oatmeal in my hands. Eh, you give your body want it wants, right?
I always have trouble jumping on the smoothie train because at my darkest times, I shoved a bunch of water, ice cubes, and a banana into a blender to call it a dinner. Oof. Ever since, I just haven’t looked at smoothies the same. Plus, I’m too lazy to clean up the processor. This smoothie, though… This smoothie MIGHT break the barrier. It just might do it.
Jenn@ Mark My Miles!
I always have to peanut butter in my smoothies!!!!
lindsay
i am convinced that smoothies are the best way to satisfy multiple cravings. Such as this. I want something to drink, that sweet, and tastes like cookie dough but has protein. Yep –>> BAM!
Lisa C.
We have 2 kinds of smoothies around here:
green smoothies
milkshake-like smoothies
The green smoothies (obviously) are focused around greens with fruit to sweeten them up. I like adding refreshing things like lemon or ginger to them.
The milkshake-like smoothies are based on soymilk and nut butter, which makes them super creamy.
I always use frozen bananas.
So what do the oats do the smoothie? Intrigued….
Lisa C.
Just got bck from Costco where I bought a large bag of the barefruit apple chips. Oh my! No wonderyo love these! I should have bought 2 bags!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The oats make smoothies a little thicker/creamier, and also add a really lovely nutty flavourβ¦ you just have to be sure to let them blend long enough so that they don’t feel too gritty. And girlβ¦ I can’t be trusted around those apple chips. Ridiculous.
Lauren
This looks like a delicious and satisfying snack for when I’m craving something a little sweet in the afternoon! I love all your recipes!
Lindsay @ Lindsay Weighs In
OH MY GOSH, as soon as I am done Advocare I am SO making this!!!
Maria @ Little Miss Cornucopia
ohmysweetness! what a lovely looking smoothie! it actually reminds me of more of a milkshake that I could get from the Dairy Queen..and I haven’t had one of those in a really long time! π
Diana @sosmallsostrong
This looks awesome and hey, you gotta listen to your body!! I have all these things in my pantry so I can give it a try. I honestly love smoothies but like you I’ve gotta be in the mood! π
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables
oh my yum!!! this is breakfast tomorrow!!
Nikki @ Quest for Balance
I feel you on being completely out of touch with the world. I’m in exactly the same boat. I also don’t have cable, or listen to the radio. Netflix is my go to form of television entertainment. And I had no idea the Olympics were starting to soon. I better find out a way to stream them asap.
I’m not a huge smoothie drinker, but when I do, a banana base is always my go to. It just adds so much delicious sweetness an really helps with thickness. This recipe does sound divine though, almost as if it could double as a health dessert shake too!
Kay
I love smoothies in the winter too. My apartment is always warm in the winter so I think that explains it.. haha
meri
yum- and made with fridge staples too! Can’t wait to try this once I can pop a banana in the freezer and wait long enough π
Kim
You always have such awesome recipes and beautiful pictures! I’ve been loving smoothies lately, but have yet to use oatmeal…this will definitely be enjoyed as an afternoon snack. I love having coffee, tea, or a smoothie to sip away on as I apply for jobs online and blog…and shop, haha π
Amy@Long Drive Journey
So funny that you should post this because I MADE IT LAST WEEK! Haha, I think I found the old recipe and I tried it. Sweet and delicious! Also, these photos are beautiful – your goal of improving your photography is definitely being met!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks Amy! It definitely helps that my Christmas tree isn’t hogging up my favourite picture-taking spot anymore π
