This thick and creamy oatmeal cookie dough smoothie is reminiscent of a comforting oatmeal cookie!
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not exactly in the know when it comes to what’s hip and trendy these days. I don’t read the news because it’s full of nothing but doom and gloom; I can’t talk to you about what’s going on in The Bachelor because I don’t have cable; and I can’t tell you what songs are topping the charts because I don’t listen to the radio. Heck, I didn’t even know which teams were playing in the Superbowl this year until I actually sat down and asked my dad “who the guys in orange” were, and I just found out that the Olympics start this Friday. Crazy.
That being said, it should come as no surprise that my body isn’t exactly up to speed in what’s going on around it either. It craves things that aren’t typical for the temperatures and seasons, asking for hot foods in the middle of summer and cold foods in the middle of winter… and lately, the cold food it’s been asking for has been smoothies…
Over the past couple of weeks, my smoothie obsession has come back with a vengeance, and I’ve been having at least one a day — sometimes even two. I’m picky when it comes to what I’ll guzzle down, though — I mean, a girl’s gotta have her standards, right?
First, my smoothies have to be thick enough so that I have a hard time sucking them up through a straw — bonus points if I have to bust out a spoon. They also has to be loaded, not only with healthy and wholesome ingredients, but plenty of healthy and wholesome ingredients. I used to be wary of drinking my calories because I was afraid the endeavour would do nothing to satisfy my hunger and only leave me prowling the kitchen in search of something more, and while that’s definitely happened on a handful of occasions, it was mostly because I was doing it all wrong…
The recipe I’m sharing with you today is right in every possible way, with each ingredient coming together to create a cold, creamy, thick smoothie that’s oh-so-satisfying. As an added bonus, it tastes like oatmeal cookie dough, and you can never go wrong with oatmeal cookie dough. This recipe has actually been up on Spoons for a little while now, but I only mentioned it in passing so I figured it was high time to give it a little more attention…
I’d love to know if you make this (or any!) recipe! Tag @runwithspoons on Instagram and Twitter, and be sure to subscribe to our mailing list to receive more healthy and delicious recipes straight to your inbox!

OH MY GOSH I need this in my life right now
Chelsea
SUPER in love with this recipe. I can’t have oats, but I may perhaps try substituting flax meal. It may make it yummy!
Cassie
I always have a smoothie with my breakfast! I’m toying with the idea of adding oats, but I like thinner smoothies so we’ll see!
Karen @ Kama Fitness
Love This!! OMG!! Seriously about to head butt the screen! Stick “cookie dough” in any recipe and you’ve got my attention! & I understand the smoothie love…I seem to be going through a mini smoothie obsession right about now, it seems every day = 2 smoothies!
Ashley @MilesonOats
Your foodie photo shoot has me feeling jealous, HANgry, and thirsty all in one go. I want to drink a mason jar full of chilled oatmeal cookie dough NOW. Sigh, but of course all I have is a packed lunch with soup, orange, toast & hummus, veggies, and a egg. I am sure you could care less about my lame food, but I need to make it clear you have turned my food world upside down today. In all the right ways. I can’t wait to try this!
You should try drinking out of bubble tea straws. They are triple the size of normal straws and make drinking thick things oh so fun. Only I would venture into a Japanese market for 30 minutes looking for straws, but hey! The things we do for food π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Okay so your lunch sounds delicious — stop complaining, woman! π And I’ve actually been on the lookout for those super thick strawsβ¦ I remember seeing them at the gas station smoothie stations a few times, so I may have to go see if I can ninja one…
Hollie
I honestly think that cookie dough is one of my favorite flavors. Thanks for sharing this!
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
THE OLYMPICS START ON FRIDAY?!? Clearly, I’m just as in the know as you are when it comes to keeping up on current events π Oops.
But go-to smoothie ingredients: almond milk, protein powder, frozen banana, spinach. And I always need cereal on top, because having something to crunch on negates the ‘i-feel-like-i-didn’t-eat-anything’ factor.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I usually toss some cereal on top of mine too, but I wanted to go with chocolate chips to make it more ‘cookie-like,’ and who really needs an excuse to eat more chocolate? π
Kelly @ Kelly Runs For Food
I know what I’m having for breakfast tomorrow! I also had a smoothie this morning, so I understand the random winter smoothie urge.
Carly @ Snack Therapy
Amazing. I need my smoothies to be thick, icey cold (I hate room temp smoothies), and delicious. Duh.
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles
I’m dying.
That is all.
Emma @ Life's A Runner
I’ve actually been making this smoothie after my runs lately! I eat it with a spoon and it aaaalmost feels like I’m eating real cookie dough.
If it makes you feel any better, I had no idea which teams were in the Super Bowl OR that the Olympics started this Friday! Even though my coworkers were talking about “Super Bowls of Pasta” and “Souper Bowls” All. Day. Long. π
Laura @ RunningJunkie
That looks yummy! I have never put raw oats in my smoothie, even though I see people doing it alot. Perhaps I’ll try it!
Recently, I’ve been wanting to do a banana, pineapple and shredded coconut….YUM. I keep forgetting to buy pineapple though!
Meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles
We are so alike, which we already knew but now we know that we both don’t love the initial idea of drinking our food in fear of not being satisfied. I never, well at least rarely, drink a smoothie, shake, green anything. And, if I do, I use a spoon. I like this smoothie shake thing though of yours. In fact, I am sorta craving the thought of it for lunch today. Will let you know if I make it later!
Beth
Do you use smoothies as a meal or a snack? I bet a bit of cinnamon might taste good in this too. Confession: I have NEVER made a smoothie!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Usually as a snack, but sometimes I’ll have one for a meal if the craving strikes — I just vary up the portions depending on what I need. And cinnamon is on the list π
Ang @ Nutty for Life
Woahhhhh I am in love. With a smoothie. Not sure if that’s legal.
My smoothie standards… well I prefer them to be thicker so that I can eat them with a spoon. I hear xantham gum takes care of that, which would be beneficial for me because I often screw up my liquid ratio and end up with a runny smoothie. Alas, xantham gum is expensive. I also add greens to my smoothies more often than not.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I used to use xanthan gums in my smoothies, but it caused me some serious stomach issues and I had to stop. It’s one of those things that absorbs water like crazy and it can actually get ‘stuck’ in your intestines, so people who have GI issues should steer clear of it.
Lindsay
Omg YUM! Making this for sure!
Ksenija @ With An Open Mind
That’s a smoothie I like! Hate when they are all runny and gone with a single slurp. I prefer eating mine with a spoon. And a frozen nana is a necessity. Plus an extra big glas jar, since no ones ever satisfied by a small glass of this glorious creaminess!
Kelsey @ Ramblings of Change
This looks so so good!
Beth
OMG! This looks absolutely awesome! I wish I had a ripe banana to freeze right now!!!! Thanks for sharing!
Tiff @ Love, Sweat & Beers
Oh yum! Looks delicious! It’s really a shame I never take the time to make smoothies.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Whaaaa? But it takes like 2 minutes!
Tiff @ Love, Sweat & Beers
Ha, I know I know… but cleaning the blender/food processor takes an additional 5. π
Shannon
My smoothie standards are very easy! I always put a frozen banana (for texture) and spinach (for the vitamins, color, and it’s virtually tasteless) in my smoothies. I wrote a blog on smoothies too actually! Love love love them everyday!

Chelsea @ A Fit LittleOne
This is a great recipe!! I would never have thought of putting oatmeal into one. I normally always do frozen fruit (whatever I have lying around my freezer) and milk when I want a super thick one. Or I add frozen fruit to some crystal light lemonade for a slushy like one. I usually go with super thick because anything that resembles a milkshake but is healthy is a win in my book!!
Heather
Girl you know I love my smoothies so I feel ya on this one! I even have a special smoothie spoon, I’m so obsessed!:)
And PS- I had no clue about the Super Bowl either and shocker! I don’t even watch it lol:)
Great post!!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries
Cookie dough ANYTHING is right up my alley! This sounds great! And beautiful photos too. π One MUST for my smoothies is frozen banana. They make the smoothie so thick and creamy!
Alex @ Kenzie Life
I’m from Denver so there’s a lot of public shame going on here at the moment and I can tell you a lot of people aren’t happy with the guys in orange! Also, we might have the worst team colors in the league. I’d probably be a bigger Broncos fan if they had decent jerseys. This smoothie looks great! Anything cookie dough is a winner in my book.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I can imagine that people weren’t too happy… I was rooting for the Seahawks, but only because Seattle is the home of Starbucks π
Sarah @ Feeeding the Brain and Body
Normally I don’t start craving smoothies until the spring, but this just looks so good that I’m craving it despite the chilly weather.
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves
Gahh this looks so fabulously creamy and delicious!!! I absolutely love oatmeal smoothies. The best one I’ve ever had is Kath’s peach “dough boy” smoothie. Ugh, I can’t wait until peach season. But I’m sure I’ll be satisfied with this smoothie. My smoothies definitely have to have a lot of nutrition and proper satiation. They also have so be super yummy, so I think this is the perfect smoothie for me! π
I ALWAYS add banana. It makes things creamy and sweet!
Becky @ Olives n Wine
Mmmhmmm π This reminds me of your oatmeal cookie smoothie that I’ve made a few {dozen} times now! I always add almond milk to my smoothies.
Sarah
Yum! This looks divine. Oatmeal cookies are my favorite and I have a smoothie most afternoons. And I would agree, smoothies definitely are better when consumed with a spoon. So, in other words, the oatmeal cookie dough smoothie is spoon worthy approved by Madam Spoons. (Forgive me, it’s early and I’m a bit cheesy for this morning. Blame it on lack of sleep.)
I almost always put a frozen banana (half or whole) in my smoothies. I have yet to join the green smoothie bandwagon. I’m tempted to try but I despise wasting food and, as much as I love my greens, I’m afraid spinach or kale just don’t complement bananas. Yup, I’m a coward!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve done green smoothies before, and as long as you stick to mild greens (like baby spinach), you can’t even taste them in there. As a small bonus, they also help make smoothies a little thicker. I wouldn’t try kale to start out with, thoughβ¦ I did it once and let’s just say I haven’t been able to eat kale since π―
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat
I can never get tired of smoothies! I still have one almost every day. Look forward to adding this one to the rotation! It looks wonderful!
I always add bananas and protein powder to my smoothies. They’re definitely a staple.
Davida @ The Healthy Maven
I very randomly get a craving for a smoothie! But I might crave this everyday. Probably better than trying to make oatmeal cookies everyday I assume.
Also I think I’m up to speed on current events, but unless the Kardashians count I’m probably not!
Ms.J
I’ve guzzled down very few smoothies in my life..I still prefer ‘eating’ my food! Buut I have made this smoothie a few times before and I have to admit I did enjoy it π
Liz @ Carpe Diem and Run
This looks so good! Thank you so much!
Diane @ Life of Di
Oh my! This looks so delicious! I think I’ll make it for my afternoon snack! Can’t get enough cookie dough π
Erin @ The Almond Eater
Haha being in the know is overrated anyways. This looks delicious! I love smoothies year-round and I’d say I almost always include a banana in my smoothies.
Shashi @ http://runninsrilankan.com
Your smoothie is so thick – its holding up those chocolate chips! YUM!
I haven’t added oatmeal to a smoothie before – and my curiosity is piqued now. One of my smoothie staples is something green – kale or spinach, and I usually add less milk to get em thick – but next time I might just add oats!
Your pictures are lovely!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Definitely give the oats a try! They make the smoothie so wonderfully creamy with a really lovely nutty flavour.
Lindsay @ Shiny Love Affair
Gorgeous photos! Looks so tasty. A banana is ALWAYS a must for my smoothies.
Kris @ Canadian Girl Runs.
I ALWAYS add bananas to my smoothies!!
Yours looks amazing!
Kim@hungryhealthygirl
Your pictures are so pretty! I’ve got to try this. Any suggestions for a protein powder substitute? I’m with you…. my smoothie has to be super thick!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You could probably just leave it out entirely⦠I toss it in for some added oomph and flavour.
Jen @ SavedbytheKale
That is one beautiful smoothie! I love the idea of creamy, thick smoothies, but I never make them. I usually always stick with less sweet ones and they almost always include lots and lots of kale. But I have to say that cookie dough smoothie looks seriously good! π
