Happy Saturday, everyone ๐
Thank you so much for all of your input on my hunger post. It seems like a lot of us have the same problem when it comes to identifying when we need to eat more, and I’d like to do a follow-up post summarizing some of my thoughts on the subject, but I need to mull over it a little bit more. So, for today’s postย I decided to fill out a survey that the lovely Tori tagged me with a few days back. I always enjoy learning a little bit more about some of my favorite bloggers, so I hope you enjoy it too ๐
. – . – . – .
How do you like your eggs?ย I want to cheat and say “cooked into my oatmeal”…
… but that doesn’t really count, does it? Sigh. Fine, then my answer issss… it depends. Sometimes I like them fried. Sometimes I like them softboiled. Sometimes I like them scrambled. Sometimes I like them devilled. The bottom line is, Iย like me some eggs.
. – . – . – .
How do you take your coffee/tea?ย I didn’t start drinking coffee until my first year of university, and back then, it was more like coffee flavored milk – I had to add tonnes of milk and sugar because I couldn’t stand the taste of it, but I needed the buzz. These days it’s pretty much the other way around. I don’t even get a buzz anymore, and I can’t stand the taste of milk or sugar in my coffee – as long as the beans are good, then I just like it straight up black. The same goes for tea. I almost never add anything, especially when I’m drinking my favoriteย one, but I’ll add honey to some of the others because otherwise they’re just too bland.
. – . – . – .
Favorite breakfast food? Come on now… do you really have to ask?
Oats for sure; and more specifically, eggy bananafied oats topped with roasted almond butter and pudding. I’m pretty sure that’s one of the only reasons that I get out of bed in the morning…
. – . – . – .
Peanut butter: Smooth or crunchy?ย Erm. Neither. Me and peanuts aren’t exactly on good terms… You know, the whole “they want to kill me” thing. But if we’re talking about nut butters in general, then I prefer smooth. You can always add something extra for crunch if you want it, but it would be a pain to pick out all the crunchy bits if you… errr… didn’t want it.
. – . – . – .
What kind of dressing on your salad?ย I like my salads light and fresh, so drenching them in a heavy, oil-based dressing doesn’t really appeal to me. My favorite is a yogurt-based dressing that I make at home.ย All I do is take some Greek yogurt and add a spoonful of mustard, some honey, and a few shakes of Mrs. Dash Garlic and Herb blend, and I’m good to go.
. – . – . – .
Coke or Pepsi?ย I gave up drinking soda a few years ago, but if memory serves me correctly, I always preferred Pepsi. Although, to be honest, either one was fine when I needed to satisfy a craving for something cold and bubbly. These days, I just reach for a kombucha when that same craving hits, and I swear that it gives me an even better buzz than the caffeine did.
. – . – . – .
Youโre feeling lazy, what do you make?ย Grumbling noises over how much I don’t feel like cooking. And then I just toss a few sweet potatoes into the oven, set the timer, and walk away. When they’re done, I top ’em with some maple syrup, almond butter, and cottage cheese/Greek yogurt, and call it a meal. Sometimes I’ll even add some roasted veggies if I’m feeling super motivated ๐
. – . – . – .
Youโre feeling really lazy. What kind of pizza do you order?ย Honestly, it’s been a good long while since I’ve feltย thatย lazy, and I was never one to get super creative with my toppings, anyways. I’d usually just order a four-cheese pizza with extra cheese.
. – . – . – .
You feel like cooking. What do you make?ย Cookies. Or muffins. There was a time when I really loved cooking, but lately I just haven’t been feeling up for it. I rarely spend much time in the kitchen these days, and when I do decide to cook something, I usually just rotate between a few tried-and-true meals instead of trying to come up with something new and creative. I kind of take this as a good thing… it means that I’d rather focus on things other than food.
. – . – . – .
Do any foods bring back good memories?ย Oh yes. Baking chocolate chip oatmeal cookies with my mom when I was little. Eating DQ ice cream cakes at birthday parties. My grandma’s pancakes. Being treated to McDonald’s chicken nuggets on family road trips. The first spoonful of oatmeal that I ate when I was breaking out of raw veganism. Good times.
. – . – . – .
Do any foods bring back bad memories?ย They used to. I had a lot of bad memories associated with a lot of fruits and vegetables from the days where I followed a raw vegan diet, because that was how my ED started and those were pretty much the only foods that I allowed myself to eat for months, but the bad memories faded with time and now all foods feel pretty good.
. – . – . – .
Is there a food you refuse to eat? Refuse is such a… strong and final word. I wouldn’t exactly say that Iย refuseย to eat anything, but there are definitely foods that I don’t particularly enjoy or crave. Zucchini, eggplant, fish, meat, mayo, and blue cheese are the first that come to mind.
. – . – . – .
What was your favorite food as a child?ย Kraft Mac&Cheese. I was rarely allowed to eat it, but I remember going buck wild whenever it wasย around – I could eat an entire box of it, no problem. That and gummy bears and ice cream… you could never go wrong with those.
. – . – . – .
Is there a food that you hated as a child but now like? ๐ My entire diet is pretty much made up of foods that I hated as a child. If you would have told me back then that I’d turn into a veggie loving bean eater, I probably would have laughed myself sick. Even my parents have a hard time believing that I’m the same daughter that they raised. Funny how that works…
. – . – . – .
Favorite junk food?ย Honestly, I’m not a big junk food eater – I just don’t crave it. This is something that people questionย every so often, given my history of disordered eating and all, and it’s actually a topic that I wanted to talk about in a future post, so I’ll go into more detail then.
. – . – . – .
Do you have any weird food habits?ย I think that depends on the definition of weird? I don’t like eating off plates – I prefer bowls. I eat with small spoons/forks. I don’t like hot (temperature wise) food. And I come up with some pretty “interesting” food combinations… but it all feels pretty normal to me.
. – . – . – .
Favorite dessert?ย One beautiful word. Tiramisu… in any form.
. – . – . – .
Do you have any weird food habits?
What was your favorite childhood food?
kabochafashion
Yaaay for doing the survey too! I’ve answered your questions on mine hehe ๐
Ahhh I still need to try your idea of sweet potato with greek yogurt/cottage cheese, maple syrup and almond butter because it just sounds soo soo good!
Haha, I find it funny how kids just tend to not like most vegetables and then as you get older you tend to like them more and more!
And I’m glad you agree that cookies and muffins are definitely the best thing to make ๐
Oooh and I have loads of bags of those Annie’s fruity bunny things, absolutely LOVE them <3
aimee
What a fun post Amanda! I too love eggs – my current favorite is poached! I very much prefer eating out of bowls too!
Favorite childhood foods- my moms homemade pizza or her fresh tomato sauce! I still love these to this day!
P.S. I like your idea for your homemade salad dressing – ill have to give it a try!
kris (everyday oats)
Loving this survey!
When it comes to the way I eat my eggs, it always depends on my mood. I do love it in oats though ๐
My favorite childhood foods were pizza and chicken fingers. First it was pizza. I ordered it off every kid menu at every restaurant we went to. Then I discovered chicken fingers and that became my new favorite.
Now I never eat chicken fingers and hardly ever eat pizza. It truly is so strange how far my diet has come since I was a kid.
Cherie โฅ
Favourite childhood food would probably be Mums self saucing chocolate pudding.
Small spoons are an absolute must when im eating my oatmeal. It makes it last longer, am I right!?
Strange food habits are cravings for dry oatmeal, yep, if Im a bit peckish, I like to go to the cupboard and just snack on a handful of raw rolled oats along with a little squeeze of maple syrup on my finger.
I love hiding in the fridge and munging out on spinach and I cant help myself but eat the stalks of mushrooms when cutting them up.
vegan aphrodite
I almost always eat from bowls too, instead of plates. My food tastes better, in a strange way, when I do ๐ And I always prefere my food cold, or at least not piping hot. I even cook my oatmeal the day before Im going to eat it, pour cold water over my pasta, and generaly leave all my food for a little cooling before I dig in ๐
Cant wait for the update on your hunger!
Lenna (veganlenna)
My fave childhood meal was probaly semolina pudding with cocoa and cinnamon and also cooked kale with potatoes and carrots – my momยดs special ๐
I have the same relationship with coffee as you – I also started drinking it in my first year of university in the form of a coffee flavored milk. Then I ditched the milk for good and now I donยดt drink coffee anymore. But I love tea!
Holly @ The Runny Egg
My favorite childhood food — I really loved any of the gushers, fruit by the foot treats. It was probably because my parents never bought them and I only had them when I was with friends. But my favorite meal was what my dad called “Poor Man’s Hamburger Helper”. You make a few boxes of Kraft Mac and Cheese and brown 1 lb of ground beef — then you mix them together. It was so good!

I always love the pictures in your posts ๐ makes me want to eat more oatmeal and sweet potatoes….and maybbe tiramisu!!
beckafly
Same way with what foods you hated as a child! I hated beans with a passion (most veggies were great! I loved ’em!) Still funny how I now have beans 1-2 times a day in some form and my diest focuses on veggies/fruit.
I have a couple weird habits with food. The first that comes to mind are my mini portions. When I get oriental food I’ll place a small amount and top it with veggies. Finish and do the same until I’m full. Oh, and there was that time I ate thanksgiving dinner with chopsticks.
Meg
Mayo is quite possibly the most repulsive food on the planet. End of story.
I love eggs. In any way, shape or form. In oats? Sounds delightful. You are delightful ๐
In Sweetness and In Health
Love getting to know more about you! And can’t wait for the future posts you mention :). Um, as for a weird food habit, I don’t do this now (thank god) but apparently when I was really little it was really hard to get me to eat anything, and somehow my dad decided to put maple syrup on grilled cheese and I LOVED it and wanted it all the time. Ew…I’m so glad I don’t like that now, or remember liking it haha. I had a lot of favorite foods as a child, but I think that mashed potatoes and DQ blizzards are up there pretty high :).
Emily
hi amanda! i think its my first time commenting .. I can’t think of any weird food habits I have but I guess a lot of food combinations are not things others typically eat. My favorite food as a child was homemade apple pie. I even used to eat it for breakfast when there was some leftover ๐ Now I would rather have oats w. cooked apples for breakfast than pie haha. I really liked fruits and veggies a a child and never ate much junk food, so besides becoming vegetarian I think I have the same tastebuds.
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Hi Emily! Thanks for saying hi ๐ Oats ‘n apples are definitely a delicious breakfast choice… especially when melty almond butter is involved. Swoon.

Weird food habits? My. Life. Story.
Heehee.
Pickles and Peanut Butter is like…gahhhhh. Love it.
That being said, it is funny how our “idea” of “junk food” may change over time.
My “junk food” is relatively healthy. But my terminology comes from it being less-than clean or nutritionally sound….etc and also stuff I just eat because, yum!
Terra Chips and Tortilla chips, processed vegetarian deli “meat” ,,,,a recent guilty pleasure is No-Sugar Nesquick in my almond milk.
Hello there, chemicals!
Cherie โฅ
Pickles and PB.. together? wow! not going to judge without trying, but ive never heard of that combo
Jen
Oh my god…pickles and peanut butter is amazing! My old roommate turned me onto peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. We were both addicted. We made them into wraps too. Don’t knock it until you try it. Seriously…so good! With hot sauce too! Or crushed red pepper flakes. Ah, memories.

Fun post! I love getting to know bloggers through these ๐
Weird food habits– making freaky cottage cheese combos every day, eating almost everything with a spoon rather than a fork, and always having cold cooked veggies over hot
Fave kid food–I’m with ya on the kraft mac and cheese and McDonald’s nuggets! I rarely got to have those, but when I did, you bet I relished them haha! I also used to love Wendy’s chicken nuggets and fries dipped in a chocolate frosty–I’d always eat them with my dad after softball games ๐
Meri
I’m a bowl- not a plate- type of gal too. I eat tortilla type meals off of plates but usually I am just smashing together a lot of veggies and protein or sauce or making microwave pancakes or oats or something- all bowl foods! Speaking of which, your breakfast combo up on top looks droolworthy. I’m going to have to try this egg-banana-oat combo. Yum!
Cheers!
Meri

Zuchinni & eggplant ( umm, I call em courgette & aubergine cause I’m British) are my least favourite veggies too, but I LOVE chocolate zuchinni muffins! I’d recommend them to any zuchinni haters & ya know chocolate makes everything better.
As a child I had a brief obsession with this limited edition Heinz baked bean pizza( weirdo!).
Loved getting to know more about you! And I just feel the need to comment on how beautiful your pictures are – GORGEOUS!
Albizia
Count me in the baby fork/spoon club. At the moment I don’t even own a normal spoon and even though I bought 2 forks, I hardly ever use them because I stole a dessert fork from home before leaving for Japan and it’s my weapon of choice most of the time ๐ .
I love tiramisu everything too. The good things is that the locals have the same warm feeling for it. They offer chocolate with tiramisu filling, tiramisu ice cream (uh-mazing!) and even tiramisu Kit Kat which I never tried but that’s not the point ๐ .
Favorite childhood food? Me + roasted potatoes = looooooooooove. I don’t think this will ever change.
Cassie
I used to love french fries in milk shakes and now neither appeal to me–unless it’s a chocolate protein smoothie and sweet potato fries (heyyy, that sounds good ๐ I never used to love beans but now I can’t get enough of them!
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate
Kombucha all the way!
And I like my eggs fried with plenty of cheese ๐
Katie
What a fun survey and I love that you put so much detail into the survey, not just 3 word answers, you are so creative girl ; )
I loved mcdonalds as a child, happy meals! Im not sure if it was the actual food or the toy though , lol!
I also LOVE tiramisu, but gosh it has to be done right, my tiramisu has to be amazing, or it is not good to me, most italian places know whats up and make it the best!!!
Love ya girl! Happy Saturday to you!
Christy
We are twins. Hah.
I prefer bowls too. I am always trying to get my mom to buy bowls and she’s like, “You can only eat so many foods out of bowls.” Not true.
Lilly
I loved learning random stuff about you ๐ I do not like my food hot either. I actually have always adored fruits and veggies, childhood foods that bring back memories are butternut squash ravioli, eggs n corn chips, tonnnns of penne pasta with butter & parm, homemade pesto, and lots n lots of hummus with everything! Can’t wait to read more of your future posts you hinted at.
The Food and Love Diaries
Love these posts you’ve been doing lately! I tried cooking my eggs into my oats the other day, and it was life changing.
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Ack I know, right? I can never go back.
Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner)
Um, YES we are similar!! Hello breakfast buddies!! WE LOVE PUDDING!! ๐
And I donโt like hot (temperature wise) food either!! I love eating cold leftovers straight from the fridge ๐
Tori (Fresh Fruition)
Loved reading this, sweet!
I’m totally with you on the oatmeal thing. Though I think- no wait, I KNOW- you already know that ๐ I need to try your hot oats cooking method. Can you believe I’ve never had hot oats? Unless you count the fake-ly flavored microwave oat packets. ICK! I think what appeals to me most about overnighters is that I can wake up and they’re ready to go! But your oats always look amazingly delicious, so I need to give ’em a go. I even bought some steel cuts for it!
By the way, any suggestions on how I might go about making tiramisu overnight oats?! I’ve seen many-a-recipe for the stuff on cooking shows, but never actually had the dessert myself! I’m fairly certain I’d be a fan- it’s got coffee and chocolate, right? Win!
I’m missing my greek yogurt already. It just does NOT agree with my stomach. I got some coconut and soy yogurt, though- hopefully I can find something that works for me or else I’ll have to just deal with the consequences when my cravings for greek yogurt roll around. Haha!

Weird food habits:
I eat with small forks/spoons (if baby fork/spoons are an option I would also take that)
Western societies we think that eating “regular” foods with our hands is rude, however, I find myself eating more and more with my hands, it just feels so natural
Those are the ones that stick out… I don’t know what else is “weird” because… to a lot of my friends they think the way I eat is weird, but I think it’s normal:
sweet potatoes in chili, pumpkin in chili, spinach and kale smoothie, avocado pudding, kale chips, etc, etc…
I don’t think anything in my diet is actually food I ate as a child other than carrots and apples. I don’t think my parents believe I’m their child, or that I’m even French or Italian for that manner (I know my Italian family denies that I’m Italian) because of my food habits, but I don’t know any other way now.

I love how you eat your sweet potatoes! I honestly haven’t had one in ages but I’ll have to pick one up now. My favorite childhood food was mashed potatoes of the normal potato variety. You could not get me to touch a sweet potato!
I don’t think the little spoon habit is weird, but it seems like every blogger lists that as one of their weird habits. Maybe it’s because nonbloggers find it weird, but I totally do that. I go so far as to ask for the sample spoons when I’m out for ice cream so I can use one when I’m out!
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Maybe it’s not so weird, especially because I got my family hooked on using little spoons too ๐ It honestly feels weird to me to eat with “normal” sized spoons… they just seem way too big.
And ditto on the potatoes… the normal ones were the only kind I’d eat when I was little… I thought there was something wrong with the orange ones ๐
Katy
I don’t get it…what’s your favourite breakfast food? ๐
I think when it comes to junk food everyone has their own definition of it. I wouldn’t say that I’m a junk food eater but to other people they might consider my diet as being filled with the stuff. Is it considered junk food if you make it yourself? I dunno I just struggle with this definition because to me ALL food is good for you ๐
I have many weird food habits. I have to reheat my meals halfway through eating them because of the stupid zeroth law of thermodynamics. I eat different food in certain ways. I eat my oatmeal a particular way. I eat with small spoons but big knives and forks.
My fav childhood food would’ve been takeaways. Oh I pretty much lived off of McDonalds, candy bars, sugarfied cereals. But at the time I wouldn’t eat anything else! It’s weird to think that I’m the same person really ๐

Kaila @healthyhelperblog!
I “just like me some eggs too”! Soft boiled are delish! I love that drippy yoke…especially dipped with toast. We have a lot of similarities…at least with this survey lol! I love eating with little spoons, never really crave junk food, that dressing you make sounds like my go to recipe, and I never put anything in my tea! We’re so alike lol!
sunshinevegan
I loved me so kraft Macncheese as a kid too! And icing! I always had to have the price of cake with the icing flower or design on it just cause it was pretty ๐
My weird food habits are numerous! Most notably, I can eat a whole jar of pasta sauce or salsa.
Amanda @ Running with Spoons
Haha I never even thought of my salsa eating as a weird habit, but I do the same thing.
Jess@HealthyExposures
I love surveys ๐ i feel like i can relate to you so well, too! i’m especially glad i’ve found someone else who strongly dislikes zucchini! haha. for a while i thought i was all alone there. and no junk food cravings? yep. and also… “I rarely spend much time in the kitchen these days, and when I do decide to cook something, I usually just rotate between a few tried-and-true meals instead of trying to come up with something new and creative”
YES. Like, when I get a gross day/feel like baking something i still love it, but it’s not at the top of my mind like it was all winter! and lunches and dinners have been so boring. but i don’t care…they’re still good ๐
VeggieGirl
DUDE. You seriously answered the “Do any foods bring back bad memories” question verbatim for me – this is why I don’t eat much produce these days….
Sara K
I also like to eat with small spoons and forks…always have and I still set the table for my family giving my sister and I the smaller silverware (even though we’re adults now). Other weird habits: I eat with my hands a lot (at home though)- a lot of the food I eat is dip worthy and so I eat Indian/Middle Eastern style- with the fingers ๐
Favorite childhood food: Pasta with bechamel sauce! I still love the stuff except now I add tonnes of veggies into the mix!
