Thick, creamy, and loaded with chocolate flavour, this vegan chocolate mousse smoothie is so decadent, you’d never believe it’s healthy!
Everyone knows that you shouldn’t read food blogs on an empty stomach — not unless you’re masochistic, anyway. All that delicious food staring back at you from your computer screen, just begging to be made and enjoyed… It’s torture!
The same goes for food photography. I will never (ever, ever, ever) pick up my camera for a shoot unless I’m properly fed… and even that’s not a guarantee that I won’t try to eat my subject(s) anyways. But can you blame me when I’m working with things like this?
Ugh. You guyssssss. This smoothie… I’m having a hard time trying to talk about it and keep things PG. I just want to make all sorts of inappropriate noises, which will do nothing to entice you to make it and probably only scare you away. But I can’t help it! You know those things that render you completely speechless? And all you can do is moan, groan, and try to express yourself by making odd gestures with your hands? This is one of those things for me! Luscious, thick, creamy, whipped, chocolatey goodness… And all you need is 5 minutes, a few ingredients, and a blender…
I can’t. I just can’t. I mean, look at the creaminess!
It’s the avocado… and the chia. You can’t taste them at all, but they do incredible things for the texture. And to make things even better, they also add a nice little boost of healthy fats, fibre, protein, omega 3s, and calcium. Not bad for something that tastes like decadent chocolate mousse! So if you’ve never tried adding these gems to your smoothies, you need to stop what you’re doing and go change that. I mean, don’t stop what you’re doing yet — keep reading until you reach the recipe — and then stop what you’re doing and go make it. I promise you won’t be disappointed…

LOVE this. I’d probably use my latest obsession- cacao powder. It’s been in my oatmeal every morning lately.
Julie @ Coastal Runner Girl
Oh wow, this looks SO good!!
Btw, your pictures are gorgeous! What camera do you use? And do you use photoshop? Thanks 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks Julie! I use a Canon EOS7D with a 50mm lens. I’ll use Photoshop on occasion, but I do most of my editing in iPhoto.
Amy@Long Drive Journey
This looks so good. Once upon a time I tried making a sweet smoothie like this, but I failed. So now I stick to the green stuff and the fruity stuff. Maybe I should try again because wow this looks like a chocolate shake! Is it sweet? I guess the bananas give it the sweet factor?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s definitely sweet! The banana does most of the work, but protein powder helps if you add that in as well. If you don’t, then you can just add a little bit of honey.
Cat
Wish I’d seen this before I made a smoothie earlier! It was good… but not chocolate pudding good! This is how I’m going to get through my chia seeds methinks 😉
Christine@ Apple of My Eye
YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM. I was going to say, “feel free to make all the non-PG noises about this as you want!”, but realized it sounded a bit off o.o.
But… chocolate… coffee.. avocado…. WHY ISN’T THIS IN FRONT OF ME RIGHT NOW. Life isn’t fair :(.
You’ve done it again, lady!
Hollie
These photos are seriously incredible. I’m like reading in shock and awe and staring at them. That is amazing.
Kristina @ Blog About Running
Holy WOW! This looks amazing!
I’ll definitely be whipping this one up asap 😉 Thanks, Amanda!
Maria @ The Good Life
Wow, this looks super delicious! Anything with chocolate I am in!
Ariel
If only avocado’s didn’t give me stomach aches I would be all over this!!!
it looks amazing though 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You can always replace it with a spoon of nut butter 😀
Jessie
Okay Okay Okay – could you use anymore pictures? I mean it wouldnt be a problem if I weren’t starvinggggg and dinner wasn’t in a whopping thirty minutes. Oh wait, I don’t even have an avocado on hand anyways… damn! Guess I’l just gawk at the photos and tortue myself 🙂
Lindsay @ Shiny Love Affair
I have to say that is one perfect pouring shot! Gorgeous photos. Another smoothie to add to my list of must makes. The combo of chocolate and coffee gets me every time.
Nicole @ FruitnFitness
Oh this sounds good! I need to try adding an avocado to smoothies! I made a smoothie for dinner last night an added espresso powder to it, I loved the slight coffee flavor!
Heather @ The Soulful Spoon
I use chia in every smoothie I make- they just aren’t the same without it!: ) Avocado is nice when I can afford them, but I always tend to forget about them, or suddenly not want to use them once they’re here so I rarely buy them. They do make a great smoothie though! I also like using a tablespoon of coconut flour to get that same consistency. It’s a bit like cake batter in a smoothie<3
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I love using coconut flour in smoothies too, but it definitely ends up a little more cakey than moussey… Which, let’s be honest, is still freaking amazing 😀
Lyric
I would’ve never thought of adding chia seeds in my smoothie!! Great idea Amanda it looks delicious 🙂
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
“And all you can do is moan, groan, and try to express yourself by making odd gestures with your hands?” <— YES! I always do that whenever I eat something particularly awesome…it's probably awkward for witnesses.
I've been seeing the avocado-in-smoothies thing popping up lately…I think I need to test that out? Anything chocolate mousse-y makes me happy.
And yes, now I'm hungry. Off to search out a morning snack…

I LOVE avocado in my smoothies!!! makes it soooo creamy
Cassie
OMG this looks so good… what a delicious dessert!! I’m always so scared to try putting coffee granules in things, I don’t know why… does normal coffee work the same as instant??
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Nooooo. Instant coffee dissolves completely whereas normal ground coffee… doesn’t. You’ll end up with gritty grounds in your smoothie, which isn’t a good look for anyone…
Brittany
I really need to start chewing gum when I bake, because there is WAY too much tasting that occurs and then I am too full/sick to eat the final product. I of course DO STILL eat the final product, resulting in feeling MORE sick. I just can’t win…or control myself. This smoothie looks divine!
Erin @ The Almond Eater
You and Davs must have collaborated with adding avocados to your smoothies 😉 I’m stingy with my avocados…I buy 5 every week to eat for breakfast M-F, no more or less. I mean, I guessssss I could buy one more haha this looks and sounds amazing!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
😆 Yeah I couldn’t help but laugh when I read her post this morning too. Totally coincidental though… maybe it’s something in the Canadian water…
Kelly @ Kelly Runs For Food
Your pics are amazing and make me drool all over this recipe! I need a chocolate smoothie in my life stat. All the yummy recipes this morning are making me want a snack now!
Chelsea @ A Fit LittleOne
I’ve heard of people putting avocado into smoothies, and I’ve been contemplating it with mine. But this looks so good, and I bet you don’t even taste the avocado. So I must try it now!!
Susie
Man that is a thing of beauty. I get really into make smoothies/glorified slurpees during the summer for my post-long run refuel. The blender makes my cat run like a bat out of hell, which is actually kinda fun. I love avo-cocoa mousses. I made a really fantastic one last summer, and meant to keep making them, but I always went back to my ice cream, lol.
Megan @ The Skinny-Life
Girl, you’ve done it again with another fabulous recipe! I am definitely a victim of reading blogs on an empty stomach. I especially should not read yours.
Kim @ FITsique
Holy creamy, chocolate, goodness! I was just saying to someone the other day that since the weather was getting warmer I was starting to crave protein shakes and smoothies again. I think this could be what pushes me over that edge!
Ms.J
I have grown to trust your tastebuds without question, so when you fall head over heels for something I know it must be epic good. And to top it off these pictures make it absolutely irresistible 🙂
Miss Polkadot
Good call about not reading blogs on an empty stomach. But you should probably extend the warning to not reading when you’re at the office with limited food choices around. Then again: who reads blogs at the office in anyway, right ;)?
Just to let you know -how- amazing your pictures are: they might even make me [read: the non-smoothie fan] wish I had a glass of this sitting next to me. And with that name? Catchy.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Confession: I used to read blogs at school all the time 😆 And I would probably do it in the office too if I worked in one!
Jess @dearhealthyness
Chocolate!! I’m a lover, and this is a recipe I’m willing to try!!
Shannon
Coffee and chocolate, coffee and chocolate. And avocado?? Yup. Sounds kinda like heaven in a glass <3
Heather @fitncookies
And I know what I’m making tonight.. this looks amazing! I would never think to add an avocado into a smoothie!
Sarah
Drool! This looks amazing! I have been craving chocolatey smoothies the past few days. Excuse me while I plug in the blender…
Kate @ Baking in Yoga Pants
These pictures belong in a magazine! Seriously gorgeous. I made chocolate pudding with avocados a couple months ago and while I love both pudding and avocados, I didn’t love that I could taste the avocados in the pudding itself. Did you feel like you could taste them in this smoothie or were there enough other flavors that stood out instead? I may have needed to add more dates as sweeteners for mine to have worked 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I honestly couldn’t taste it at all, but that was with the coffee and protein powder added as well. I’d start with 1/4 if you’re not keen on the taste. A little really goes a long way!
Karen @ Kama Fitness
Girl, you make the best smoothies ever, Love them!!!!! & I totally agree with you, avocado does create the best texture in smoothies…..mmmmmm…..& I’m reading this on an empty stomach….
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat
You better believe I’ll be trying this one out sooner rather than later! A thick, chocolaty and creamy smoothie is definitely my kind of breakfast! LOVE it!
Morganne @ NutButterRunner
Ok hi – I have returned from vacation and this is the first thing I read. Hello, deliciousness!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Welcome back! Missed your face! <3
Lauren-Kate
This looks absolutely delicious! I love wacking an avo in my smoothies – it adds so much creaminess!! Chocolate smoothies are the best!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen)
Good grief that looks amazing! I’m having a love affair with my blender too these days. 🙂
Pip {Cherries & Chisme}
Ohhh the day that I am reunited with my blender (9th July) is going to be a dangerous day indeed!! Bookmarking this 😀
meredith vogel
Um, this looks amazing. Even to someone like me who doesn’t like shakes or smoothies. I may even have to make this. Can I call it Amanda’s chocolate fribble?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Only if you want me to giggle like a schoolgirl every time I hear you say it 😉
Lucie@FitSwissChick
Oh my goodness. I just had lunch but this would be my perfect dessert. I literally want to eat my screen right now – while doing inappropriate noises! Now that would probably freak my co workers completely out, so I have to hurry up and make this at home asap. Chia Seeds. I need to buy Chia Seeds.
Genius girl!
Shashi
I am sold!!! Going against my better judgement that ALL recipes that come out of your kitchen are freakn addictive – I am gonna make this and enjoy it all by myself -which is gonna be hard work, cos I don’t think my daughter will buy the fact that this smoothie has avocado in it!
Btw, your photos are gorgeous! If you happen to take suggestions for posts – please consider doing one on your camera/food photography skillz!
As always, thanks for sharing this recipe, lovely lady!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks lovely! I’ve been thinking about doing a photography post, but gah! There are just so many great ones out there already and I still feel like I have a lot to learn. I’ll think about it though!
Heather @ PrettyHealthyMostoftheTime
I second the idea of the photography post because:
1) your photography is amazing!
2) YOUR post would be both educational and hilarious!
