Once upon at time, there was a girl who hated posting selfies of herself online… mostly because she felt awkward taking them. She figured it would be a good idea to get over her aversion since she was a blogger and that was a great way to add a little personal touch, so she challenged herself to write a post full of nothing but selfies (followed by another, and another, and another), and found that she actually kind of enjoyed it. Seeing as it had been a while since her last one, she figured it was time to do it again…
. – . – . – .
As we speak, I’m… not quite ready to speak with you just yet. A 4 AM wakeup call followed by a few hours of driving in gloomy weather and no coffee in my system makes me a tad bit antisocial. Here are some shots of the road instead…
As we speak, I’m… settling for coffee from McDonald’s because Starbucks wasn’t open yet. I know. What kind of coffee shop opens at 9 AM?!?!
But hey… caffeine is caffeine…
As we speak, I’m… displeased with something, apparently. Either that or just bored and trying to entertain myself by taking stupid selfies. Don’t act like you don’t do it too…
As we speak, I’m… finally in my happy place…
… as is evidenced by the fact that I’m busting out the happy dance…
… which was actually just me hopping around in an effort to keep myself from sliding backwards when they said “Hey, that’d make a nice shot. Stand there.” Yeah. No problem.
As we speak, I’m… doing the snowboarding thing.
And apparently “raising my hands in the air and waving them around like I just don’t care” (read: trying to keep my balance after catching an edge).
As we speak, I’m… cold. A little cold (especially the very tip of my nose… see it?). Conditions went from sunny and [mostly] clear to holy.crap.it’s.a.blizzard within the span of a few minutes. It made things a little white. And cold.
As we speak, I’m… regretting the fact that no one managed to capture photographic evidence of the epic wipeout I had on Saturday afternoon. I usually have one or two really dramatic spills every season — with snow flying everywhere and me rolling/sliding down half the mountain — and I’ve always wanted to see what those look like because people are always surprised to see me get up from them. The real irony is that I walked away from my crazy spill scotch free (besides some snow up my nose), and then tore off a thumbnail adjusting the strap on my goggles. Let me tell you, that hurts like whoa…
As we speak, I’m… squirrel bear! Bear, bear, bear!!!
We saw a bear on the drive down the mountain from the ski resort, and he (she?) spent a good 5 minutes just waddling along on the side of the road before suddenly deciding that he (she?) needed to get to the other side. This was the first time I saw a bear in years, so it was definitely a nice perk.
As we speak, I’m… getting ready for day 2 on the slopes! And wondering what the heck is the point of making coffee cups this small…
As we speak, I’m… cold… again. Day 2 was way colder than day 1, with snowy winds gusting up to 80 kph (50 mph). The tip of my nose and a patch of my left cheek are still feeling a little tender. Fingers crossed they’re not frostbitten… again.
As we speak, I’m… burning my tongue, mouth, esophagus, and probably stomach on hot tea in an effort to warm up. I felt that sucker burn all the way down…
As we speak, I’m… looking like a ninja but feeling like a goofball. I never know how to stand for pictures — what the heck do I do with my arms… and legs?! Awkward.
As we speak, I’m… about to tip over, apparently 😆
As we speak, I’m… marvelling at the fact that this could literally be a black and white picture [it’s not]…
Do you think I could use some more colour in my life? 😆 I almost bought a pair of light blue pants this year, but put them back because they just didn’t feel like me. I’m not sure whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing. But hey! I do have some rose coloured lenses in my goggles [sometimes], so that counts for something 😉
As we speak, I’m… out of pictures and about to pass out, so I’m going to end things here and wish you a happy Monday. Bye! 😀
How do you feel about taking selfies?
What colour(s) are you usually wearing?
Do you constantly burn yourself on hot drinks/foods too?

I love this Amanda! :))) And, I’m probably a little obsessed with selfies. I make the excuse that no-one is ever with me to take a picture of me, but I think I might be slightly selfish. Your selfies are super cute.
Yup. That’s me. I get impatient to drink my tea, so I start to glug it. Ouch. My tongue usually comes away burnt. Oops.
Jess @hellotofit
You take spectacular selfies! I’m not too comfortable taking them yet, but include them in some posts, nonetheless. I wear lots of blues and neutrals!
Kezia @ Super Naturally Healthy
I used to be the same about selfies then running your own business blows that out the water ! There are pictures of me everywhere now!! But I am ok with it – gotten over myself eventually. I love all your selfies – totally FAB!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
So true! Blogging really forced me to step outside of my comfort zone when it came to both pictures and even using my whole name in e-mails/bios/etc. It’s hard to run a business when people can’t get a feel for the person behind the screen.
Shawna
loooove these shots, and they’re making me so envious — i didn’t get out snowboarding once this season, which makes me SO sad. i miss living in CO!
Arman @ thebigmansworld
Waiting for the day for the infamous funny selfies to return.
Hopefully in another as we speak 😉
As we speak…Well, I think you know!
Alexis @ Hummusapien
YOU HAVE THE KEWLEST LIFE. And the best selfies. That is all.
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
I am the Queen of stupid selfies. Alright fine, maybe just a princess but I’m in the royal entourage.
Small coffee cups are for the birds.
I adore these posts. The happy dance picture literally brought a smile to my face and OMFG, a bear. Are you kidding me? I want to see a bear up close. Ahhhhhh, so going back to study those pictures now.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Maybe we’ll see one in Colorado! Hopefully not face-to-face, though. That’s a little -too- close for comfort.
Ellie
I find that I take a whole slew of selfies one day and then go for like two weeks without a single picture. I guess if I think I take a good picture one day, I get a lot of use out of it =P
Brittany
OMGGG these photos are giving me major mountain cravings and I don’t even really like snow! I have never heard of a Starbucks that opens at 9..WTF?! My store opens at 5 weekdays, and 6 weekends….that’s how it should be for COFfEE!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
To be fair, this Starbucks was inside a grocery store, and it was the grocery store that opened at 9 AM. Rude.
Hollie
I feel like I’m the most awkward person ever so I completely understand your pain. I think you look awesome though! Glad to hear you are enjoying yourself in the mountains.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
And I know I said this a few times already, but… CONGRATULATIONS!! 😀
Amanda - RunToTheFinish
yeahhh I kinda never felt right with the up close selfies maybe I need to attempt a post like you to force me to just get over it 🙂 Enjoy the mountains, I love any trip that gets me in nature!
Jo @ Living Mint Green
Glad to hear you got your mountain fix in, lovey. My weekend hiking plans were ruined by the snow, but it gave me a chance to stay inside & be cozy with a stack of books.
I feel super awkward about taking selfies – it’s out of my comfort zone, but something I’m trying to do a better job of embracing. haha
Brit
Love your smiling face! Snowboarding season is over for me so your pics are making me a little wistful! I am the opposite of you on the hill. All my gear is brightly coloured, right down to the mitts and goggle strap. My parents gave me awesome goggles this year for Christmas with magnetic lenses so swapping them in and out depending on the sky’s conditions is hassle free!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Interchangeable lenses are so great, eh? I carry 3 with me, but they’re not quite that hassle-free. Still a lifesaver when conditions go flat white and you can barely see what you’re riding on.
Shashi at RunninSrilankan
I haven’t still quite mastered the art of being comfortable in front of the camera – yet, I love to take everyone else’s pictures! And I love seeing everyone else’s selfies! That bear though! Glad y’all were in the car and not rolling down a mountain when y’all ran into him/her(?) A coworker asked me to wear red for a group photo one time, and I didn’t have red – I didn’t even have orange – I need more color in my wardrobe too!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
If it makes you feel any better… I didn’t have any green to wear in St. Patrick’s Day 😆
Laur
As we speak… I am feeling the after effects of a bad coffee burn on the roof of my mouth. I forgot why I stopped putting those little straws in my drink so I don’t gulp down my coffee… And now I remember the entire roof of my mouth burns to a crisp and peels off. HOLY ouch.
I wear a lot of black with neon accents. I like pops of color since I’m a total fashionista (LOL not.)
Love these selfie posts and I am the most awkward person ever, so I understand your dilemma!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
But your selfies look so pretty! I’m always jealous of your hair 😛 And I’m currently dealing with a peeling mouth roof (whaaat?), so I can totally sympathize…
Shannon
I am not a fan of selfies. They are just so awkward! I try to wear color most of the time, but some days call for black and white.
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner
The snow looks awesome. Great pictures. I wish I could have gotten one more snow boarding trip this year but guess I’ll have to wait until next year. oh and I always look awkward in selfies!!
Kelsey Yoki
Me and my selfie game are pretty decent – I think I need to just starting taking them more…since I realize I do feel the slightest bit awkward! Teal is my fav (or turquoise, or mint green…I group them together) but I do find myself wearing a lot of neutrals. They go with everything. I was guilty of an almost all teal get-up at CrossFit this morning, but threw on a pink headband to break it!
Lauren
I’ve never been snowboarding. I’d definitely wipe out more than once. You look great 🙂
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles
I don’t like selfies- hate taking them, always seems so silly and awkward but they are so a part of life these days, aren’t they? I don’t burn myself often but when I do, ah! Color?Hmm. I want to say pink, I like to wear pink 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s just a lot easier to take pictures of yourself when you’ve got no one else around to take a picture of you. One thing I’m not sure I’ll ever get behind is a selfie stick, though. Talk about awkward…
Alyssa @ Renaissancerunnergirl
Looks like so much fun, but I am SO GLAD there’s no more snow on the ground in NYC! I also have not figured out how to take a selfie yet that actually captures my face and not a wall, so I’m far behind you in this department…
Emma @ Life's A Runner
Haha, the “opens at 9am” gets me every time. Like, there are actually people who don’t function before then? What?! I’m just impressed you made it a few hours without coffee – if I’m waking up at 4am, I had better have some in my system before my feet hit the floor. 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
To be fair, the Starbucks was in a Safeway and the Safeway was the one that put off opening until 9 AM. Rude.
Kelly @ Kelly Runs For Food
Oh man, I know you’re a total snow bunny, but I would cry if that were our weather right now. I’ve been all about the sunshine and flowers these days! Pretty awesome you saw a bear, though! I went to the D.C. zoo this weekend and saw some pandas, which made me really happy.
Lesley
I always burn my tongue on hot drinks and food. When I made hot soups and stews, they’re so yummy I just don’t want to take the time to let them cool down a little bit. I always burn my taste buds, but it’s worth it when the food is tasty.
Suzy
I do love snowboarding but I can’t handle the cold. I’m a major wimp! Plus I have some weird circulation problem where my lips and lower face/chin turn blue. Hot drinks don’t help, either–I have to warm up in a bath or shower. You look like you’re having so much fun and the scenery is gorgeous!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
My fingers and toes tend to freeze that way 🙁 Sometimes I have to put those little chemical heat pads in my gloves and boots to keep myself from going completely numb. So annoying.
Ellen @ My Uncommon Everyday
I am such an awkward selfie-taker! I wish I weren’t, because it seems like something everyone can do…. but not me? Annoying.
I wear a lot of neutrals, but also a lot of colors… I guess I wear black, white, gray, and blue (in the form of jeans, especially) most often, but I also try to work in pops of color. Psh what am I talking about? I don’t know fashion. That Thought Catalog article on girls with low maintenance style could’ve been written by me 🙂
And yes, I am forever burning myself on soup and tea. But they’re so good, I guess it’s worth it.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The Secret of the Selfie is to take 50+ photos and find the 1 or 2 that look good 😆 Seriously. That and angles… It’s all about finding your angle and working it.
Sarah @ Sarah's on the Run
Your pictures are AWESOME. I’ve only been skiing like, twice and I’m pretty terrible at it. I imagine I’d be pretty awful at snowboarding too. Looks like major fun though!
Jen @ Pretty Little Grub
I’m glad you were able to get in some more snowboarding! What a fun post and you look great in selfies so keep em up 🙂
Ryan (the skier)
See, if you ski instead of ride, you look even more photogenic because you have a something to do with your hands, like hold your poles.
Nice carve!
Ryan
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
😆 Now that sounds like the -perfect- motivation to try and learn skiing 😛 In all honesty, I -have- been thinking about trying it out, though! I’m just not sure I could get used to going down the hill facing forward instead of sideways…
Ryan (the skier)
Yeah, but just think about how much less dorky you’ll look standing in a lift line! The coolness factor of snowboarding drops dramatically the instant you pop a boot out of the binding to shuffle around like someone who just how out of a car after a long drive and their leg is asleep.
Khushboo
Love this post, Amanda….long live the selfies ;)! I should probably take my own advice- given the amount that I take, I post a very small fraction of them–> it just feels awkward, although not so much when others do so. I think my tongue is used to hot drinks- I tend to only drink my teas & coffees piping hot–> lukewarm just tastes so meh!
KAT
No Starbucks open at 9am? Hmmm that’s so not ok! Although I do enjoy McDonald’s coffee. I find it to be on point almost every time I pick some up! So at least you got decent coffee 🙂
I have never been snowboarding but every time you post pictures you make me want to try it out! I just have such messed up knees and ankles that I worry it won’t be a good combo. I can’t even ice skate for more than 20 minute without the cold/skates starting to kill my ankles….
Arlene
Great post Amanda (funny) I like selfies (especially the bloggers I follow) nice to put a face to their site. Isn’t that part of being a blogger anyway? If both my sons weren’t married I would definitely send the your way hehe Have wonderful week!
Arlene
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I seriously lol’d at the second part of your message. Thanks for the smile, Arlene 🙂
Hayley
These pictures make me happy and sad at the same time – I love the mountains so much but we have had HORRIBLE snow for the past few years so I’ve barely made it up. It’s so beautiful. I also am the same with falling, I always have one super bad spill per year and I wish I had it on camera haha
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job
What great pictures! Also, they make coffee cups that small so you can fill them with espresso.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Which would definitely make sense if there was espresso there, but there was only regular drip coffee!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out
Coffee shops should be open at 6 am! Give the people what they want!
Miss Polkadot
Helllooo again :)! It had really been quite some time since your last episode of this kind of post – a welcome return. I think it’s good you’re not doing those weekly or even more often, though. Don’t get me wrong: it’s in no way against you personally. But I find an overload of selfies rather … annoying. I’m obviously curious to know what a blogger looks like [we don’t need to get into the details about my blog here, do we 😉 ?] but even if selfies really are a way to boost self-confidence I don’t see the need to plaster every post with them. Okay, off the soap box again.
You saw a bear!!!! Oh. my. I’m not sure how I’d have reacted`Held me breath and prayed it’d run off soon? Screamed? You can tell I’m not used to those sights of wildlife around here.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
No worries, lady! I’m pretty sure there’s no way I’d be able to take enough pictures of myself to do this very often — even doing it for this post felt annoying near the end 😆 And if I wasn’t in a car, I’d probably freak out over the bear. But being surrounded by tonnes of steel adds a good amount of confidence 😉
Bridget
I always seem to burn the roof of my mouth on pizza… take hot cheese gets me every time.
Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola
I love your snowboarding pictures! I’ve only been skiing once but I loved it and have always wanted to try snowboarding.
Michele @ paleorunningmomma
Haha I can totally relate to the selfie thing!! I didn’t feel okay about posting selfies until maybe 6 months in to blogging? It’s cool now, I’m sure I post too many 😉 I love this post, and you are my ninja snowboarding hero! You always make me wish I’d tried it at some point, I’m sure it’s way too late now.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Never too late! If I can start running, you can start snowboarding 😛
Jen @ Bagels to Broccoli
HA, I love your selfies because mine are EXACTLY like them alllll the time. Except it’s usually because I can’t get a “good” photo, which I somehow doubt is your issue ;).
Ms.J
Oh! *happy dance* you know I LOVE “As we speak” posts. And your banana oat French bake – ADDIC.TED 😀 . But that’s a whole ‘nother story.
Selfies. I kid you not when I declare -these days- I always forget to take pictures; selfies or other… and then go “whyyy” when back home! You do rock the black very well I’ll say. I however, am a huuuge fan of color; not a head-to-toe of neon but a splash of something bright definitely perks me up. And I was in denial for awhile but I believe (if my stuff are anything to go by) I am passionate about pink. And coral. And turquoise. Not all together in an outfit though 😉 .
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Woohoo! I’m glad you like the bake 😀 And I know what you mean about forgetting to take pictures — if it wasn’t for the blog, I’d probably -never- take them!
