Despite the fact that I spent a good chunk of yesterday trying to fight off the post-Christmas blues, one good thing about the holidays being over is the fact that I can now go back to my regular old eats. I’m all for letting loose and enjoying all the foods the Christmas season has to offer, but I’d be lying if I said that I was able to walk away from all the treats and feasts scotch-free. Welcome to my life…
… it is riddled with indigestion 😆
So I really wish I could do a Christmas recap for you guys, but to be completely honest… I don’t really have a lot to say or show. Christmas was a little different for us this year. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but a lot smaller and quieter than I’m used to. The reason being that my mom, who’s basically the brains behind the entire operation, came down with a nasty flu about a week before Christmas and was pretty much down for the count. I did my best to help her out wherever I could, but moms just have that special touch that’s hard to replicate. She still amazed everyone by putting a delicious spread on the table, but it’s hard to feel super festive when 1/3 of your party is sick (I don’t have any other family here, so holidays are just me, Mom, and Dad). She wasn’t even feeling that well on Christmas Eve, so we ended up having to go to mass at 9 instead of midnight, which only contributed to the strangeness of it all…
But instead of lamenting the fact that Christmas is over while I sit here feeling like it’s still supposed to happen, we’re going to talk about cake. Why cake? Because today kicks off the start of Birthday Week and it’s time to get serious about the kind of cake I want underneath my candles this year. Okay, so tomorrow technically kicks off the start of Birthday Week since the big day is January 4th, but I don’t post on Saturdays and I wanted your guys’ input on what kind of cake I should ask for… I spent some time browsing the internet last night, and I managed to narrow it down to 5 choices. In no particular order…
#1… Oreo Cake via My Baking Addiction.
#2… [Almond Butter] Cup Brownie Cake via Sprinkles Bakes.
#3… Oreo and Kit Kat Cake via Bubbly Nature Creations.
#4… Chocolate Honey Cake via Sprinkles Bakes.
#5… Chocolate Ricotta Icebox Cake via Martha Stewart.
Ridiculous, right? There are just WAY too many amazing cakes out there. So tell me… which cake should I choose?? Let me know in the comments!
Tatum
YESSSS. good ol’ ginger tea for the gut. I HEAR YOU THERE SISTER. I definitely indulged in some of my grandmas christmas baking.. how could I not!?
My choice would be the almond butter brownie cake.
Happy early birthday babe!!!
Lisa C.
Is it too late to vote!? If not, I definitely am voting for the Almond Butter Cup Cake! That just says Amanda to me! 🙂
Dana @ Dana's B.S.
Happy Birthday week! The Oreo Kit Kat cake sounds both intriguing and delicious. It gets my vote for sure.
And an unfortunate fact of adulthood is that Christmas just feels weird some years. Mine has felt weird for the last 6 years – the year I got a part time retail job. So much has changed in that time and I no longer look forward to Christmas for the same reasons, but it still is a lovely time of year.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s definitely disappointing that we outgrow that childhood excitement, but you’re right — it’s still a great time of the year 🙂
Katie @ Daily Cup of Kate
That Oreo Kit-Kat cake looks soooo awesome. Hope your mom is feeling better!
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
My money is on the chocolate honey cake, even though they all look delicious. I’m willing to bet the Kit Kat cake will only aid your indigestion. Devilish chocolate wafer cookies.
Hope your mama is feeling better now, and Happy Birthday Week.
Laura Agar Wilson (@lauraagarwilson)
Sorry to hear your Christmas was a little lack lustre, the same thing happened for us a couple of years ago round New Year when my parents got sick. Hope your Mum gets better soon! Those cakes, oh my, spoilt for choice!
Ellie@Fit for the soul
Wowww already birthday week is here?! I feel like it was just yesterday you celebrated your birthday! 😛 That shows how scary time is, mannnnn. And I totally think you should listen to me and get the ricotta cake! ahhhhhhhh ricotta cake is one of my favorites in the whole entire world and although I’ve never tried a chocolate version of it, I’m sure it will be delicious. It doesn’t seem so decadent that you can’t have more than one slice either. 😀
Emily
OH MY GOODNESS PICK THE ALMOND BUTTER CUP BROWNIE CAKE how is this even a question??? hahah, but seriously…it HAS to be that one.
Catherine @ foodiecology
Oh no! So sorry to hear your mother was sick for Christmas. That was me last year. Hope she starts feeling better. As for the cakes, I’d just have a multi-layer cake of each, because there’s NO WAY I could decide on one. Holy yum! Happy birthday week! 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m actually thinking about how I can combine them all in some way, because you’re right — it’s basically impossible to choose!
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli
I say go with the Oreo!! There’s just something about cookie’s and cream that SCREAMS happy birthday to me! Also, I think it would be the best one to pair with some vanilla bean ice cream!
Sorry to hear about your mom being under the weather. I hope she’s feeling much better now! 🙂
kris
ahh sorry to hear about your mom 🙁 I hope she’s feeling better! And I’m glad that you were still able to have a good christmas despite that nasty little bug. As for the birthday cake…so many yummy choices – they all sounds fabulous, but I think I’d have to choose #5. I have a weakness for ice box cakes. And the ricotta sounds amazing!
Danica @ It's Progression
#2 eeeeasily wins in my book 🙂 That probably has something to do with the fact that I don’t like oreos though haha Yay for birthday week!
Brittany
Holy shit…can I say that?? Because I am saying it..HOLY SHIT! The Oreo cake, or the almond butter cup cake TOOK MY BREATH AWAY!! Please make BOTH. It is a birthday WEEK after all! I hope your mama is feeling better!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You can and you did! 😆 I’m not sure I could handle two cakes after my Christmas cookie coma, but maybe I can find a brilliant way to combine the two…
Jessie
#3 for sure 🙂 Happy Birthday week, Amanda!
Emily
YAY! [Almost] birthday twins! Since mine is on the 6th, I guess I better get working on my cake choice as well…I actually haven’t had a real birthday “cake” in 3 years. Woah. That is WAY too long. Maybe that means I can justify having two this year? I think yes…
I mean, between that almond butter cup cake, the oreo & kit-kat cake, and my sister’s famous french vanilla with homemade buttercream icing, I’m never going to be able to pick just one!
I can’t wait to see what you decide to make!
Haylee
I made a cake with oreo frosting once, I will never be the same, you cannot go wrong with either of the oreos!
sarah
Aww sorry to hear your mom was sick on Christmas :/. I didn’t even think people COULD get sick on Christmas…like, is that allowed?! Geez.
Wow Wow Wow to ALL the cake.
Given I’m presuming making all 5 isn’t an option, which BTW, it totally should be – I think of almond butter, I think of you, so #2 is the perfect cake for you in my opinion.
Have a fab weekend :D.
Xxx
Gina @ Health, Love, and Chocolate
Chocolate honey…just saying. Anything involving honey is pure bliss.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
#truth… I love the simplicity of it, but I can’t promise to make the outer web thing holding it together 😆
Karey @ Nutty About Health
Oh. My. Gosh. Those cakes are so delicious looking!! Definitely choose #2 or #3 – yum!!! They each look & sound amazing! Can’t wait to see what you decide on & I hope those nasty winter blues go away!
Christine@munchkinmumbles
Wow all of those cakes look so good! That almond butter cup cake would have to be my pick but all of the others are really close behind! I hope that your mum is feeling much better 🙂
Ksenija @ With An Open Mind
I read your whole post, but the only thing which stuck in my mind after 10 hours of packing boxes are those awesome cakes. If you ask me: almond butter brownie is the way to go 😉
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Healthy Kitchen
Being sick on Christmas is so crappy – I’ve been there before, but luckily it was several years ago and I’ve managed to stay bug-free around Christmas since then. I hope your mom is feeling better!
All of those cakes look freaking fantastic – it’s impossible to choose between them! Maybe you should just celebrate your birthday multiple times so that you can make them all? 😉
Arman @ thebigmansworld
None of them.
A bowl of your usual oatmeal, stick a candle in it, sprinkle some sprinkles and dig in.
That, or the almond butter one. Seriously, has your name written all over it 😉
Sarah
Chocolate honey ricotta cake with almond butter cups, kit kate and oreos on top. Wha, who says you can’t combine food?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Brilliant <3
Kaila @healthyhelperblog!
OREO CAKE OREO CAKE OREO CAKE!!! <—–that counts for three votes right?!
Carly @ Snack Therapy
EAT ALL THE CHOCOLATE!! Happy almost birthday week, pretty lady!
Davida @ The Healthy Maven
Ahhhhhh almost your birthday!!!!! Definitely #1!
Sandra
Cake!!!! Exciting- and I have made THAT very Oreo and kit kat cake only last week for my frineds bday- IT IS AMAZING- that or the Oreo cake have my vote 😉 gee whizz I had the worst Christmas- I was on call for work (I’m an assault counsellor) and got called in to one of the most distressing and violent cases I have ever worked on- heartbreaking :(. I spent 9 hours at work- so it left little time for Christmas celebrations. I don’t have a lot of family either and my party was down 1/3 of its group without me too- so they know how it feels 🙂 Hope you have a fantastic bday week Amanda ! (And pick the Oreo or Oreo kit kat cake ;))
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Sorry to hear about your Christmas, Sandra… but the work you do is amazing <3 And thank you for the recommendation!
Maria @ Little Miss Cornucopia
like you, i have an extremely wonky stomach too..and i find myself turning to similar things for relief.. all of these cakes sound amaze but the almond butter cake definitely takes the cake 😀
although, the oreo, kit-kat cake is just.soooooo.darn.cool…i’m curious to know what you decide..
Kim
Maybe you should just go with one of each cake that way you don’t have to make any choices!!!
Sorry that your mom was sick during Christmas – no fun at all. I hope she is much better and that you and your dad stay healthy!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
😆 I wish I could, but I don’t think I can handle 5 cakes with the Christmas cookie coma I’m still in.
Laura
Chocolate Ricotta Icebox Cake!! It looks sooo divine and not as crazy as the other ones! Sometimes simplicity is best!
Hope your mom feels better! It’s awful feeling under the weather on a holiday =(
Dixya @ Food, Pleasure, and Health
this is such a hard decision however I like that ice box ricotta cake. Hope your mom feels better soon.
Danielle @ LabelsAreForTinCans
I am drinking the same things right now! Hope your house is healthy soon 🙂
Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome
Sorry to hear your mom was sick! Hopefully she is feeling much better by now. So hard during Christmas! I would definitely go with the Almond Butter caked. Although they all sound great!
morgan
so weird! I haven’t been staying on top of my blog reading lately but today I read yours & we are scary alike. my mother also had the flu over Christmas & it was odd, not having her all bustling around & cooking way too much. AND my birthday is the 2nd so I am all cake-ariffic this week on pinterest. I am totally stealing your options though and I heart cake #2 SO much 🙂 I am adding almond butter cups to my grocery list as I type. now the next big question: what is the birthday dinner going to be?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I hope your mom is feeling better! And I haven’t even started thinking about dinner yet… I need a bit more time after all the Christmas feasting 😆
Katie
The chocolate honey cake!!!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
#2!!! DEFINITELY #2…. with maple AB?? 😉
Jay Styers
Haha I have been drinking the same stuff since christmas….lots of soup, and green/ginger/lemon tea. All those cakes look amazing but I would go with the Almond Butter Cup Brownie Cake because I LOVE me some almond butter 🙂 Happy Early Birthday
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries
Oh my goodness, they all sound incredible, but #1 totally sold me. I’m a hardcore Oreo LOVER! That’s exciting you have your birthday to look forward to next week!
