Despite the fact that I spent a good chunk of yesterday trying to fight off the post-Christmas blues, one good thing about the holidays being over is the fact that I can now go back to my regular old eats. I’m all for letting loose and enjoying all the foods the Christmas season has to offer, but I’d be lying if I said that I was able to walk away from all the treats and feasts scotch-free. Welcome to my life…
… it is riddled with indigestion π
So I really wish I could do a Christmas recap for you guys, but to be completely honest… I don’t really have a lot to say or show. Christmas was a little different for us this year. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but a lot smaller and quieter than I’m used to. The reason being that my mom, who’s basically the brains behind the entire operation, came down with a nasty flu about a week before Christmas and was pretty much down for the count. I did my best to help her out wherever I could, but moms just have that special touch that’s hard to replicate. She still amazed everyone by putting a delicious spread on the table, but it’s hard to feel super festive when 1/3 of your party is sick (I don’t have any other family here, so holidays are just me, Mom, and Dad). She wasn’t even feeling that well on Christmas Eve, so we ended up having to go to mass at 9 instead of midnight, which only contributed to the strangeness of it all…
But instead of lamenting the fact that Christmas is over while I sit here feeling like it’s still supposed to happen, we’re going to talk about cake. Why cake? Because today kicks off the start of Birthday Week and it’s time to get serious about the kind of cake I want underneath my candles this year. Okay, so tomorrow technically kicks off the start of Birthday Week since the big day is January 4th, but I don’t post on Saturdays and I wanted your guys’ input on what kind of cake I should ask for… I spent some time browsing the internet last night, and I managed to narrow it down to 5 choices. In no particular order…
#1… Oreo Cake via My Baking Addiction.
#2… [Almond Butter] Cup Brownie Cake via Sprinkles Bakes.
#3… Oreo and Kit Kat Cake via Bubbly Nature Creations.
#4… Chocolate Honey Cake via Sprinkles Bakes.
#5… Chocolate Ricotta Icebox Cake via Martha Stewart.
Ridiculous, right? There are just WAY too many amazing cakes out there. So tell me… which cake should I choose?? Let me know in the comments!
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves
Ooo hooray for birthday week! I’m sorry to hear that your mom wasn’t feeling well, but I hope you still had a wonderful Christmas with your family. Rememberβ we’re still in the midst of the 12 days of Christmas! π
Wowza. I’m going to say either the Oreo Cake or the Chocolate Honey Cake. Cookies and cream cake/ice cream is one of the only ways I truly enjoy chocolate (I’m not the biggest fanβ¦don’t hate me), and anything with honey sounds sweet and luscious. π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Don’t like chocolate? π― What kind of cake do you usually have for your birthday?
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves
I know, I know. Everyone is always shocked to hear that! I love classic vanilla! Or something fruity like peach or raspberry cake.
Andrea @ pencils and pancakes
I choos the almond butter brownie cake! Send me some, k?
Gloria
It’s hard to choose! I think I would go with either the almond butter cup brownie cake or the Oreo π
Alice
I hope your mom feels better soon! Happy Birthday Week by the way!!!! I definitely think either the Oreo or the Chocolate Honey! I’m usually an Oreo gal, but that Chocolate Honey just spoke to me!
Amanda
my votes go with oreo or the almond butter cup! They ALL look SO GOOD! happy birthday!!
Becky @ Olives n Wine
Ummm… the almond butter cup brownie cake FO SHO!!!! Holy moly that looks amazing. And birthdays are the best – mine is only a few weeks afterwards π Can’t wait to hear what cake you decide on!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Yay for January babies! Always nice to come across someone who can relate to the pain of being born during the post-Christmas slump π
Alicia
All these cakes look so good. I’d vote for the oero and kit kat one though
Amanda
Ricotta Icebox Cake! Most definetly.
Kristin
almond buttercup cakeβ¦duh! Any look fabulous, so enjoy and Happy Birthday!!
Carroll
I would say almond butter cup or oreo and kit kat cake.
Chelsea
Ugg. I’ve got you on the stomach pains today! Yuck!! I’m sorry your mum is sick! I hope she feels better soon!!!
Yaaaay birthday week!!! I’m thinking the chocolate honey…and my b-day follows on the 19th if you wanna make one then too π
Ang @ Nutty for Life
Oh okay this is serious biz. So personally I don’t love kit-kats, so that one was automatically out. I think that my choices in order of pref are: Chocolate Honey Cake, Icebox Cake, or the first Oreo cake. I’m glad you celebrate birthday week too, because I do the same thing. Birthdays should be extended!
I hope your mom gets to feeling better, spending Christmas sick is no fun at all! I’ve done that before and it’s such a bummer.
Miss Polkadot
Aw, sorry to hear your mum wasn’t feeling well on Christmas – definitely not fair play by destiny. Nobody would be able to pull off twelve dishes for Wigilia when hit by the flu. Is she feeling better yet? Sending my best wishes for a quick recovery!
“the kind of cake I want underneath my candles this year” – what a cute way of saying it. Regarding the decision it’s a tie for me between the delicious simplicity of the Chocolate-Honey Cake and the ridiculous goodness overload that is the Almond Butter Cup Brownie Cake.
Remind me to celebrate birthday week (!) instead of just one day only this time, too!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Yeah I think we only managed to have something like 6 π And mom is feeling a bit better, but it’s still holding onto her pretty well. As for Birthday Week, I’ll do my best to remind you! When’s your birthday?
Miss Polkadot
Sorry to hear it’s one of those nasty buggers of a flu deciding to stick around for longer :(.
My birthday’s on January 29th offering itself up for birthday month celebration.
Heather Murphy
I hope your madre is feeling better! I always get very nervous around the holidays because I am afraid someone will get sick.. I even contemplated not taking Joseph to school the week before because I didn’t want to take any chances! The Chocolate Ricotta Icebox Cake sounds intriguing and delicious!
Ari @ Ari's Menu
I was pretty sold by #1 (I love anything cookies and cream), but the texture of #4 looks reallll good too. Hope your mom feels better and HAPPY ALMOST BIRTH WEEK!!! I LOVE birthdays!!!
Alex @ therunwithin
I wish I could catch the baking bug and do something like this for my family! I am thinking of your mom!
Kat
Sorry to hear your mama is ill…hope she has shook off the bug now! Sometimes they just linger…those can really suck! As for the cake? Good lord you have made that decision quite difficult…Im pretty sure I stared at each cake for like, 5 minutes before actually moving on to the next one. My vote is the almond butter cup one I think…simply because…wow….
Jess
I thinks is the second time I came to this blog and I’m now a fan.
The oreo cake looks so fluffy and yummy! Also the almond butter too ;), and the Kit Kat is pretty, but oreo cookie looks delish!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks Jess! Sweet of ya to say π
Kay @ goaloflosing.com
Cake #4, all the way!
Sarah
I think any cake involving almond butter has your name on it!
Sarah @pickyrunner
The first cake. Definitely. I’m sorry your mom wasn’t feeling wellbut I’m glad you tried to make the best of it! Sometimes the quiet Holidays are nice too. My Christmas Eve was just my immediate family and it was nice albeit different from what I’m used to. I hope you kick off birthday week right π
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
I hope your mom is feeling a bit better! Being sick is never fun, but over Christmas? Boo. I’m glad you guys were still able to get a bit of celebration in.
And as for the cake, I think the Almond Butter Cup Brownie Cake looks particularly delicious…can you find almond butter cups or would you have to leave those out?
I’m still intrigued by the ricotta icebox cake, because I’ve never seen anything like that.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’d probably have to leave them out or sub them with something else π And the ricotta cake is definitely intriguing… I kind of want to make that one just because I’ve never had anything like it.
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl
So sorry your mom wasn’t feeling well…. that just stinks! Glad that you were able to have a nice Christmas, despite the strangeness, though. I’m a huge fan of butter cups, so even though they all look amazing, I would for sure go with those.
Erin @ The Almond Eater
The oreos and kit kats one looks amazingggg but also kind of tricky….I’d go with the almond butter brownie cake π Sorry your mom wasn’t feeling well—I feel like everyone is getting sick this time of year, but I’m glad to hear you still had a nice Christmas.
Caitlin
Almond butter brownie concoction! As much as I love oreos and kit kats (that’s a close second for sure), that second cake looks and sounds amazing to me! I hope your mama’s feeling better, hun. No fun being sick during Christmas π
Jess(ica) @CookingIsMySport
Sorry about your indigestion, Amanda. One thing that always does the trick for me when my stomach is upset is taking Activated Charcoal tablets. They’re just crushed up charcoal put into capsules that pretty much absorb all of the ‘indigestible’ things that your stomach has trouble digesting on its own and take away stomach cramps, indigestion, nausea (as well as some…’other’ embarrassing problems- you know what I mean lol) You can buy them at most pharmacies as well as in the supplement sections of Health Food stores.
And Happy Birthday Week! All of those cakes look absolutely glorious, but if you want my opinion, I’d say go for the Oreo Cookie cake. I’d enjoy that one best π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks, Jessica! I’ve heard about those charcoal tablets before… My stomach seems to be on the mend for now, but I’ll definitely keep them in mine for next time.
Kelsey
Sorry to hear that your mom wasn’t feeling well…hope she is better! You should definitely make the Almond Butter Cup Brownie Cake because well, everything with almond butter is amazing! Happy Birthday week π
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope
Holy amazing cakes! I’m drooling over the Chocolate Ricotta Icebox Cake. Gotta love Martha Stewart haha π
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles
I am totally with you – cake is the hardest thing to pick! I struggle for myself every single year and people make fun of me but as I say, if I am going to eat it, it is going to be right. How funny that I posted today about cake for my dad’s birthday. You may want to wait until I post the recipes for my dad’s specially made by me cake. It is ridiculous and chocolate fudge loaded with a special treat inside – cookie dough.
Liz @ Carpe Diem and Run
I’m sorry your mom wasn’t feeling well π
I feel ya on the indigestion and stuff – I was on the edge of a cold last night and I think part of it was eating a lot of junk without a good amount of veggies/fruits.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hope you’re feeling better, Liz!
Liz S.
I’m partial to the Almond Butter Cup Brownie Cake! Yum!
So exciting that your birthday is coming up! I’d bake you something if you lived closer.
Megan @ Meg Go Run
Wow well obviously all of those cakes would be amazing and you couldn’t go wrong with any of them! I am gonna go with my gut (haha!) and say the Oreo cake. π
Heather @fitncookies
i say #1! I’m all about oreos π These all look beyond delicious, though. I’m sorry Christmas was different this year π I really hope your mom is back to feeling herself in the next few days!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Should I count Benny’s vote too? π
Cassie
Happy birthday week!
I would go with the icebox chocolate ricotta or the almond butter chocolate cake… you can’t go wrong with either!!
Jenn@Be ME
The oreo and kit kat cake for sure. Hope your mom gets well soon!
Kate @ Quarter Century Southern Living
Happy Birthweek! I have to go with the Oreos and Kit Kat cake, it is truly a work of art π And, it looks delicious! You can’t go wrong though. Those cakes all look amazing!!
Lucie@FitSwissChick
Sorry to hear your Mom wasn’t feeling well!! I hope she is back to full health by now. Now on to those cakes. If I were there with you and if I were a baking genius, I would make a mini-version of each one of these babies. But I’m not, sooooo – Almond Butter Cup Brownie Cake!! I think I would dive my face into this one if it stood in front of me!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Gah! A mini version of each would be amazing… but I don’t think I could pull that off. And the AB one is definitely a good choice. It’s the one I’m leaning towards as well.
Elise @ 9toFit.com
oh MY, look at all that amazing food porn! This is the stuff I need to avoid lol
Jen @ SavedbytheKale
Happy Birthday Week Amanda!!! I think you should celebrate the entire month π Please please make either the Oreo Cake or the Chocolate Honey Cake and let me know how delicious they are! or I’ll come help you eat them π I hope your tummy feels better soon!
shashi @ http://runninsrilankan.com
Your poor mom – I sure hope she is feeling better now, Amanda!
As for the cakes – WOA – you pose an extremely hard question today – I simply cannot decide between #2, #3 and#5…any chance you could have all 3?
π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
π Normally I’d say yes, but I’m still trying to recover from my Christmas cookie coma, so I’m not sure I can handle 3 cakes. Maybe I can find some way to combine all of them though π
