Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!
1. Hi friendly faces! We’re doing something different for ToL today. You guys know I’m a sucker for a good survey, so I knew I had to ninja the “Questions Nobody Asks” tag when I saw Alison do it. The original was a little on the long side (43 questions!), so I picked a few random ones to keep with ToL style. I needed some questions to direct my thoughts today, because my brain feels like it’s running on autopilot. So here we go…
2. Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotels? No. This is actually one I can’t really understand because those suckers are horrible. Seriously. My hair ends up looking and feeling like something between a knotty rat’s nest and hay whenever I use them, which is okay in a pinch but not really a look I want to be sporting on a regular basis. I do take bathroom selfies in hotels, though… #fortheblog.
3. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Oh geez… a lot of things. I remember wanting to be a vet before I found out they had to put down animals. Then a scientist (??). Then a race car driver. Then a makeup artist. Then a psychologist. Then a writer. And now I’m a blogger, health coach, and soon-to-be holistic nutritionist. Can’t say I saw it coming, but it turned out better than I could have imagined.
4. Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed? Closed! Omigosh, closed. My bed sits in such a way that I end up staring straight into my closet when I lay down… which is kind of creepy when it’s dark and you’re looking into a pitch black hole of nothingness just waiting for something to come flying out at you. The same thing goes for sleeping with any part of me hanging over the edge of the bed — just can’t do it. And yes, I’m all of 30 years old.
5. Do you still watch cartoons? I was going to say no since I don’t exactly sit on the couch in my PJ watching Saturday morning cartoons with a bowl of Fruit Loops in my lap, but then I remembered the fact that the last two movies I saw in theatres were [technically] cartoons. Pair that with my ever-growing Disney collection, which I still occasionally watch from time to time, and yeah… I guess I do. What can I say? Big kid at heart.
6. When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper? Uhm. Is it sad that I can’t even remember? I’m guessing it was probably something like 10+ years ago when I was still in high school and wrote letters to my best friend while I was bored in class. It kind of makes me sad to see those old school forms of communication fading away, but then I ask myself why I never take the time to do something like write a letter, and yeah… I can’t come up with a better answer than “it just takes too long.”
7. What is your song of the week? Angels Fall by Breaking Benjamin. I really liked these guys back in the day, so it was good to see them get back together after breaking up for a few years.
[youtube=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVl5MtdodLU&w=640&h=427″]
8. What was the best prank you ever pulled off? So this one time we poured a bag of flour into the air vents of a friend’s car so that, when he turned on his AC, all the flour shot out in his face and covered the entire interior. Needless to say, he was none too pleased with us for a couple of weeks after that, but at least we picked up the cleaning bill π
9. Do you always smile for pictures? Nope. I actually feel more comfortable not smiling for pictures, but I also don’t want to come across with permanent RBF so I’ll pop out a smile 83.5% of the time. Otherwise I end up looking a little something like this…
10. How do you relieve stress? Usually one of 4 things: going for a drive, playing video games, sweating it out, or blasting my favourite music and dancing around. As much as I’d love to be able to meditate or do something calm and quiet to relieve stress, I’ve found that I need something fast-paced that requires all of my attention so that I basically forget about whatever it is that I’m stressing over. It works wonders.
No questionsβ¦ just tell me whatever comes to your mind! π

Ahh I wanted to be a vet too, but the whole putting animals to sleep thing stopped me as well. Also, I wanted to be an archeologist and then I found out the pay is dirt (almost literally) and it would ravage my nails. Even now, I still don’t know what I want to be. Hmm.
Dayum, your hair is getting crazy long and beautiful too. No wonder you don’t chop it all off.
Kim @ Racing Bananas
Agreed with the closet door being closed – all doors must be closed if I actually want to get some sleep! It’s so creepy otherwise!
Brittany
When I have a line up of drinks to make at work I always have RBF and it’s the one things I am told to “work on” from time to time hahhaaaa. It’s funny because the people that know me at work laugh about it because they know how friendly I am, but comment on how mean I look at times. Whatever, I’m concentrating and in the zone! I am alllll about the Disney movies.
Yalanda @ Laugh Anyway
Lol, I totally take the hotel lotion, even though it’s horrible. I like the small, purse size container though so I use it in a pinch. The shampoo and conditioner, I absolutely do not take or use for the same reasons you mentioned.
Cassie @ Almost Getting it Together
TOTALLY agree with the shampoo things. My dad travels a lot and takes them to keep them in the guest bathroom in our house… I forgot shampoo when I went home in May and just had to go buy shampoo because I couldn’t deal with how crappy those ones were!
VK
Omg. Please no. Another holistic nutritionist? Such a disgrace to healthcare, dietitians, and the public. Cri will warn you that within the college of dietitians there is ALOT of lawsuits going on against “holistic nutritionists” and it is now ILLEGAL to use the initials RHN. We (I am an RD who has worked my butt off to get where I am) have a right to report people for investigation who can face thousands of dollars in fines. Seriously I have lost all respect for you and will only be reading here to ensure my profession is protected.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I understand your frustration, VK, but I don’t think it’s fair to judge someone so harshly based on the wrongful actions of others. Yes, there are plenty of people out there who give holistic nutrition a bad name, but that’s usually because they’re overstepping the scope of their practice and claiming or trying to be something that they’re not and don’t have the training for. Transparency is extremely important to me, and I always make sure that my clients are familiar with the kind of training I’ve had, and with what I can and can’t do for them. While there are people who go into holistic nutrition as an “easy way out,” there are also plenty of us who do it because this is an approach to health that we prefer.
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Totally agree with wanting to be a million things! A ballerina, an architect, a teacher, personal trainer, an author…
PS You’ve been doing this link-up 140 weeks?! That’s serious commitment!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The linkup is actually only something like 60 or 70 weeks. I was just doing it as a weekly post for a while before that.
Kelly @ Kelly Runs for Food
Love this! I may have to steal some of these questions for a future post. I sleep with the doors closed too. Partly because two cats and a dog can make solid sleep basically impossible haha. I don’t like having dark open hallways in my viewpoint, though.
Jess
Your comment about RBF cracked me upβI was just having a conversation about that with some friends recently. I definitely have to be careful with that one. I can be shy, and sometimes that can come across as aloof, which couldn’t be farther from how I am in real life!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I have that same.exact.problem. People are always telling me that I’m so much nicer than they thought I’d be. Uhm… thanks? π
Sam @ See Sam Run
My mom and I always take the shampoos and such from hotels. I either keep some in my toiletries bag for when I travel or in my bathroom. You never know when you or a guest will forget something! I also may be weird, ( jk I know I am) but I like to sleep with my feet hanging over the bed!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Keeping them for guests is actually an awesome idea!
Melissa
My best stress relievers are: definitely talking to my sister and mom and being able to vent and share my feelings, listening to music, reading, watching favorite TV shows and of course pinning on Pinterest!
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner
What a fun survey! Since we just moved into our new house for some reason I have to have the doors open in order to get as much light as possible. Usually I am not like that. I tend to like the doors all closed so we shall see when I snap out of it π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I actually love having the doors open during the day as well. It’s only when it gets dark that things start to creep me out π
Tamieka@fitballingrunningmom
Neat questions!!!
I did a 50 question survey with the hubby on our road trip this weekend and we also did a kid’s would you rather. Both were fun and informative.
I don’t take the shampoos from hotels but I do take the body washes π
Abby
All doors CLOSED all the time. I also hate when cabinets are left hanging open in the kitchen. Just drives me nuts!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Right?! Or if a drawer is half open or something? Just no. All things closed.
Annette@ FitnessPerks
We sleep with both the closet door, bathroom door, and master bedroom door open! Hahaha. Never been a problem & it makes it so much cooler too with the A/C flowing all over π
Sarah @ Foxy's Domestic Side
Yes to closet doors closed, creepy otherwise! Luckily my closet is in a different room from where I sleep now.
Arman @ thebigmansworld
LOL. you need to speak to my mum about those hotel toiletries.
Also. Holistically treat my chicken addiction.
Jamie
Haha this is too funny because I always sleep with my doors open. My boyfriend thinks it’s so weird and insists we close my bedroom door even though I have my own apartment. Haha.
Arlene
I agree about the hotel shampoos! But, but while I was traveling to 5 different colleges with my Daughter who was interviewing for Grad school (she finally decided 5 more years of girl drama lol). Anyway, I forgot my shampoo and used theirs and Love it and hunted it down here. Paul Mitchell (teatree) Lemon Sage Thickening Shampoo an Conditioner! Who new!
Alene
Jo @ Living Mint Green
I hear ya on the hotel shampoo… generally it’s horrible. The property I work at uses Philosphy amenities in the room – so there is hope!
Wow your hair has gotten so long! I’m currently growing mine out for a change. I hope I don’t get annoyed and chop it before giving it a chance.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Philosophy?! Those I’d be ninjaing for sure. And you need a vision board to grow out your hair. Just put up a tonne of pictures of you with long hair and look at it whenever you feel tempted to cut π
Shannon
I hate hotel shampoo and conditioner! It is such a bummer because it so much of a hassle to have to carry your own with you. They need to get it together and give you something better!! π
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables
I totally agree about hotel shampoo! It’s the worst! I usually bring my own if I can, haha
Niki @ Life With Niki
First of all I gotta say, whether or not you smile, you are absolutely stunning Amanda!
That aside, I have to admit that closet doors also stay CLOSED for me, no further comment. I am very interested in your journey of becoming a holistic nutritionist as it is something I am considering myself. I actually wrote my latest post on this subject and would love your input regarding my dilemma since it is something you first-handedly have gone through :)!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’d love to chat with you about it, Niki! Feel free to e-mail me and we can talk more π
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job
Yes I love random posts like these where I can learn more about people. I don’t really like the hotel shampoo and conditioner either, but for some reason I want them bc they’re small (??) The last movie I saw in the theater was Inside Out so I feel you on the cartoons π
Ange @ Cowgirl Runs
I only take the shampoo and condition if it’s the good stuff. The hotels that carry Aveeda?! I’m all over that!!
Suzy
Oh, I love your list! Great song too. Hotel shampoos are the WORST. I’d need about 5 of them just to get through all my hair anyway.
Erin @ The Almond Eater
Omggggg the shampoo from hotels is the WORST. Actually no, the conditioner is the worst–it literally does nothing. NOTHING. End rant. I wish I could pull off not smiling.. I look so bored with life when I don’t smile ha.
Hayley @ Full of Life
I will NOT have my feet over the side of the bed either…too creepy. I still check under the bed before I get in as well (sounds ridiculous typing that out). You have a good non-smiling face for pictures, rock it girl. I prefer my smiling face much more than a serious one, so I rarely have any non-smiling pictures. Need to work on my RBF.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You have a gorgeous smiling face! No need to change it. And I’d probably be checking underneath my bed as well, except I have shelves under there so there’s technically no ‘under the bed.’
