These Grain Free Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies have the same texture and taste as a classic chocolate chip cookie, but are made without flour, butter, eggs, or refined sugar! Perfect for those following a paleo, vegan, or gluten free diet.
Diving in to some paleo & vegan baking today with these grain-free chocolate chip cookies!
Confession #1: When I say “diving in” I really mean “dipping my toe in” because even with all the flourless baking I’ve done, I’m still pretty new to baking without grains. 100% intrigued, though.
Confession #2: I prefer baking vegan cookies to traditional cookies because it means I can eat the cookie dough without having to worry about raw eggs. And yes, those do skeeve me out.
Confession #3: Sometimes I write these confessions just so I can talk in point form and not have to worry about how sentences flow together. This is one of those times.
Confession #4: COOKIES!!
It’s funny because cookie baking has changed a lot since I first started dabbling in it when I was a wee little thing. Back then it was all flour, butter, sugar, and eggs, whereas these days you see a lot more grain-free flours like almond and coconut, butter being replaced by coconut oil or applesauce, refined sugars being shelved for maple syrup or honey, and eggs either being left out completely, or getting subbed for flax “eggs.”
And guess what? You still end up with cookies that look and taste like the traditional kind from back in the day…
Maybe not 100% exactly like those, but totally delicious in their own right.
And if you’re someone with food allergies or special dietary needs? Being able to enjoy your favourites without having to worry about any adverse reactions is one of the best feelings there is. And no one should live a life without cookies. So for anyone who’s paleo, vegan, and/or gluten-free? These cookies are for you. And if you’re not paleo, vegan, and/or gluten-free? These cookies are for you too.
They’re soft, chewy, with the irresistible sweet and buttery flavour of old-traditional cookies. Only they’re made without any refined sugar. Or butter. Crazy, right? None of my [non-vegan/paleo] taste testers could believe it either, because you can’t taste the coconut flavour in these cookies at all. I swear there’s something magical about the combination of almond flour and coconut oil — it produces a sweet and subtle buttery flavour that’s crazy similar to the real thing. I hope you love them!
Happy eating!!

PrintGrain Free Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies
- Total Time: 20 mins
- Yield: 18 cookies 1x
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups (168 g) blanched almond flour
- 3 tbsp (21 g) coconut flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) coconut oil, melted
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) maple syrup
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) unsweetened applesauce
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup (42 g) vegan chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a non-stick baking mat. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the almond flour, coconut flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the melted coconut oil, maple syrup, applesauce, and vanilla, mixing until all the ingredients are well combined and a dough begins to form. Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Scoop out a scant tablespoon of dough and roll it between your hands to form a ball. Place it on your prepared baking sheet and repeat until all the dough has been used up. Use a jar or flat-bottomed cup to gently flatten each cookie. They won’t spread much from their pre-baking shape, so shape them how you want them to look when they’re done.
- Bake for 10 – 12 minutes, or until the edges begin to turn golden brown. Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on the sheet for ~5 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to cool completely. Store them in an airtight container for up to a week.
- Prep Time: 10 mins

One of the most mind-blowing international wife administrations working with Latin young ladies. Throughout the long term, figured out how to get a decent standing and fame among clients. For instance, as per 2021, a few million records are enrolled here. These are young ladies from Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, and different nations of Central and South America. The organization offers great usefulness and sufficient costs, and furthermore gives a serious level of security to its clients. The burden is the absence of a portable application.

These chocolate chips cookies really look yummy.

Is there an alternative to almond flour?
Sophia
I was wondering that too, if I could use arrowroot powder instead.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I haven’t tried them with any other flour, but I don’t think arrowroot powder would work since it behaves differently than flour. You could try 3/4 cup oat flour + 3/4 all purpose gluten free flour (or normal AP flour if you don’t need them to be GF).

these cookies look amazing, such a great recipe, Confession #2 was by far my favorite! I am the same way with cookie dough…lol
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m glad I’m not alone! I think my mom scarred me for life when I was little by telling me I could get food poisoning from raw eggs 😆
Sue
“skeeve me out?” What does that mean?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Just that it freaks me out.
Caitlin
Luuurve love love this! Is the applesauce necessary? Would mashed nana Work?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s just to add a little bit of extra moisture. Mashed banana should be fine, or you could even just use a few tablespoons of almond milk!

I have a coconut allergy…What can I use in place of the coconut flour and coconut oil?
Thanks!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I haven’t tried these without the coconut flour, Adriann, so I’m not 100% sure 🙁 Sorry!

these are in the oven now and the bigger question is…how long will the cookie dough last unbaked? omg…it is so good and without eggs no worries about eating the raw dough. can’t wait to taste the cookies 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I KNOW! I had the same issue with the dough and just wanting to eat all of it without baking 😆 I hope you liked them!!
marci
do you think chocolate covered cookie dough truffles could be made from this dough? i am the official dessert maker in the fam and was asked to bring something *new* and that i could eat next weekend…
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I haven’t tried it myself, Marci, so I can’t say 100% for sure, but I think it should work fine! If anything, you can play around with the amount of coconut flour or add a bit of almond milk to get the consistency you need.
marci
thanks so much…i think it may be on my to-do list 🙂
DP
What brand of almond flour and coconut oil do you use/recommend?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I use Bob’s Red Mill for the almond flour, and then Nutiva for the coconut oil, DP.

These look great! I am keto, so wondering how much swerve I could use instead of maple syrup? Thanks!
Mary
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve never used Swerve so I can’t say 100% for sure. Sorry! I do think it needs to be a liquid sweetener, though, because that’s one of the wet ingredients that helps form the dough. I guess you could compensate by adding more applesauce, but that would be changing the recipe a lot and I can’t say for sure how they’d turn out.
