It may sound decadent, but this chocolate ice cream smoothie is actually super healthy and made with good-for-you ingredients like cocoa, avocado, and banana. Luscious, creamy, and super satisfying, it makes a perfect choice for when those chocolate cravings hit {vegan, gluten-free, refined sugar-free}.
Dang it.
I was going to start this post off with something like: “So I just found an awesome new favourite smoothie ingredient,” until I realized that that’s how I started off my last smoothie post.
Dang it.
But because I [apparently] have a bad memory and I’m [still] not over my newest ingredient obsession, we’re going to carry on and pretend like I haven’t already told you what it is.
Sooooo…
Avocado!
And chocolate, obviously, but avocado is what we’re focusing on today.
I just can’t get over it, you guys. The things it does to my smoothies is just… unghhhh.
I’m going to try and keep this as PG as possible, but you know when you eat something that’s so.freaking.good that it basically renders you speechless and all you can do is moan, groan, and try to express yourself by making odd gestures with your hands? This is one of those things…
One of those luscious, creamy, whipped, chocolatey things.
I actually had a hard time naming this smoothie because the texture and taste remind me of so many different things. On the one hand, it’s got this pillowy creaminess that makes me think of a pudding or mousse, but on the other hand, it’s cool and creamy like a smoothie. Or, honestly, like melted chocolate ice cream. Boom. Nailed it.
And the avocado? It works its magic without you being able to taste it. Trust. I even added an extra dose of cocoa to make sure you tasted nothing but chocolate when spooning into this lusciousness. It’s super quick, super easy (4 ingredients!), and super good for you.
Happy eating!

This is amazing, tastes exactly like chocolate pudding (no joke) but healthy and satiating to have for lunch, especially if you top it with chopped nuts. I also did it with a teaspoon of maple syrup and the flavor came out perfect!!! Thank you so much for the recipe, will be making again very soon π

Melted chocolate ice cream is a pretty good description although pudding isn’t so bad either. Maybe chilled pudding. Whatever you call it, I want it.

It looks like liquid silk; seriously this is one of the most beautiful smoothies I’ve seen. π

I STILL need to try avocado in my smoothies! I rarely make a smoothie, but this looks like ice-cream almost!

Avocados in smoothies is incredible. and of course this is luscious and creamy and I can just go ooohh ahhh over the photo you pouring the smoothie into the cup.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I was so paranoid that I was gonna miss the glass and pour it all over my table π Thanks, Juliet!

Honestly? You should have just called this pudding instead of smoothie – for all those weird people like me π who aren’t fans of the latter and because it looks like delicious silky chocolate pudding. Which used to be one of my favourite simple desserts for years.
It’s funny you’d mention your reason for chocolate actually not being one of your preferences in regards to ice cream. Because I feel the same. Most chocolate ice cream is just way too sweet without that deep dark cocoa flavour. I guess sugar simply is cheaper than cocoa …
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s always the names I struggle with most, and if it wasn’t for the cold banana, then I’d probably go with pudding π And YES to lacking the deep chocolate flavour. I just toss chocolate chips into my vanilla ice cream and call it a day π
Michelle
WOW, that looks so amazing. I’ve never tried avocados with chocolate before but have heard great things. I will definitely try this recipe!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I hope you love it, Michelle! The combo is definitely a tasty one π
Michele
Amanda this looks perfect! And so convenient, especially since my avocados should be ripe tomorrow so I can make it π

I saw this on your IG Stories yesterday and DANG IT – it looks even better here – how is that even possible!!! Love avocado in chocolate smoothies – though sometimes I struggle with the consistency – you, my friend, have perfected it! This is so thick and creamy and luscious – #foodporn at it’s finest! And am thinking “unghhhh” needs to be a hashtag!
Happy Tuesday, Amanda!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Hahah! I’ll try to make #unghhhh happen, but no promises π And I’m really tempted to try and use avocado in baking now. I’ve seen it done but never tried it myself, so might be time to start experimenting!

chocolate chip is probably my favorite flavor – I usually go for the vanilla based ice creams over the chocolate based even though I love chocolate. I know you understand. I need to try making smoothies again. I’ve been totally off them since last summer I think.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I still remember your smoothie kick π And I totally get what you’re saying about the chocolate. The flavour just isn’t strong enough.
heather @Lunging Through Life
Makes me super sad that avocado makes me so sick! This looks so dreamy and delicious. I keep hoping that as quickly as I gained some allergy or intolerance to avocado, I’ll get rid of it!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Aww no! That’s kind of what happened to me and pineapple. Grew up loving and eating lots of it, and then one day it randomly started making me sick. Hopefully it’s just a phase for both of us!
Rita
I didn’t have an avocado so used mangoes instead. It tasted great. I would recommend trying mango if you can.
Hollie
What an interesting ice cream smoothie. I have been loving ice cream since it finally warmed up again. If you’re like me, than you’re over the cold weather. This looks great and thanks for sharing.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Definitely over the cold weather. And it’s still part-time snowing here so it doesn’t even feel like spring. Fingers crossed we start getting more sunshine and warm weather soon.
