Enjoy the taste of apple pie for breakfast with this healthy apple pie oatmeal smoothie! Warmed up on the stove after blending, it makes a delicious and comforting breakfast or snack {vegan, gluten-free, refined-sugar-free}.
So I sat down to start plugging away at this post when I realized that the keyboard on my laptop is an absolute mess and probably harbouring a good 2 weeks worth of food particles and dirt, so hang on a sec while I fix that.

Much better! So, hi! What do you think of the not-so-appetizing intro to what’s actually supposed to be a deliciously appetizing recipe post? I know, I know. But I was dealing with some hardcore writer’s block and just staring at a flashing cursor mocking me from a completely blank screen, when my eyes wandered south to the keyboard under my fingertips, and… yeaaaaah. It wasn’t pretty.
No shame, though! No shame since I know I’m not alone in neglecting my keyboard. It’s just one of those things tends to get overlooked a lot since I’m constantly eating/working around it and it likes to pick up the scraps of whatever happens to be on my fingers.
Now contrast that with my kitchen, which I’m basically OCD about. Clutter/mess on my counters actually bugs me so much, that I’ll usually clean-as-I-go while testing a recipe or making a meal, juuuuuuust so I don’t have to deal with a huge pile of dishes or misplaced ingredients when I’m finished.
I might have to rethink my approach, though, seeing as I almost burned the crap out of this apple pie oatmeal smoothie when I turned my back on the pot so that I could wash the blender.
What can I say? Sometimes my behaviours aren’t quite as functional as I’d like them to be.
And if you’re wondering why I had my smoothie in a pot over the stove to begin with, it’s because, warmed up, it makes for one heck of a cozy drink… which is exactly what we want going into the colder months, no? Something warm and comforting to take the chill out of our bones?
I mean… things have warmed up a little bit over the last couple of days, but it’s definitely starting to look and feel a lot more like fall. The days are getting shorter, the leaves are turning colours… Heck, I was over at my parents’ place the other day helping them rake leaves in the backyard. Granted, I haven’t felt that je ne sais quoi in the air quite yet, but it’s coming.
And I freaking love it.
I feel like long-term readers are going to roll their eyes at what I’m about to say since I say this basically every.single.year, but I love everything about fall. The sights, the smells, the clothes, the flavours. Fall is pretty much my spirit season and it makes me feel all sorts of warm and fuzzy inside.
Or maybe that’s just this apple pie oatmeal smoothie that I’ve been sipping on. Warmed up. Not burnt.
It tastes like a slice of warm apple pie, minus the butter and sugar. And minus the work. I’ve never baked a pie from scratch before, but it looks like a pretty lengthy and complicated process. This smoothie, though? Easy, breezy. All you do is toss the ingredients into a blender* (<- I -love- this one), and voila! Instant gratification. I mean – okay – slightly delayed gratification since you’ve gotta wait another 5 minutes for it to warm up, but it’s so totally worth it. Not only does it increase the coziness factor by 200%, but heating up the apple makes it a lot sweeter and totally brings out the flavour that much more.
So grab your favourite blanket and spoon, and dig right in…

PrintWarm Apple Pie Oatmeal Smoothie
- Total Time: 15 mins
- Yield: 1 serving 1x
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups (300 ml) unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1/4 cup (20 g) rolled oats
- 1 Tbsp (10 g) chia seeds
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- pinch of ground nutmeg
- 1 medium-sized apple, peeled, cored, and cut into chunks (~130 g)
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) unsweetened applesauce
- 1–2 tsp (5–10 ml) maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Add all of the ingredients to the bowl of your blender and give them a stir to ensure that everything is well combined. Let them sit for ~10 minutes, until the oats begin to plump up and the chia seeds start to gel.*
- When ready to eat, blend on high until everything breaks down fully and a smooth and creamy consistency is reached.
- Transfer the smoothie to a small saucepan set over medium heat and bring it to a simmer or boil, depending on how hot you want it. If the smoothie becomes too thick during cooking, add an extra splash of almond milk until your desired consistency is reached.
- When it’s just how you like it, transfer the smoothie to a heat-safe glass or bowl, garnish it with toppings of choice, and enjoy!
Notes
* If you don’t have the extra time to do this in the morning, combine the ingredients the night before, cover, and place in the fridge overnight.
- Prep Time: 10 mins
- Cook Time: 5 mins

I made this for breakfast this morning. Sorry, but not a fan. It tasted fine, but I could have made hot oatmeal with apples and cinnamon instead. It would have had some texture to it, taken less time to make, and with less clean-up (no sitting for 10 minutes before heating, and no blender container to clean)

I really enjoyed my warm apple pie smoothie. I made a few changes. First, I used unsweetened cashew milk instead of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I did not add in extra vanilla extract to compensate, but if I make this again, I might. I also omitted the maple syrup. When I ate it, I topped it with fat free ReddiWip and stirred in some Truvia to increase the sweetness. The sweetness level and temperature were perfect, though your gingerbread smoothie recipe is still my favorite warm smoothie!

Your pictures are fantastic! This is beautiful! And looks delicious.

I can get used to the idea of a warm smoothie if it involves milk, apples and cinnamon! What a great idea, looks so delicious!!!
I can see myself burning this thing too, I tend to multitask a little too much sometimes.

omg. I will show you my keyboard next time. It’s cocoa covered, and God knows what else.
I puffy heart this smoothie and we shall see it go virus, minus the us, add an as(s).

My Mom is the best pie maker from scratch. It is definitely an art.
Ellie Pell
My mom is such a great pie baker, I could never do her justice! Pizza pie? I think I could handle that π
I’ve never warmed up a smoothie before, but it can’t be bad right? I mean, it has all the things and looks incredible!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m not even sure my mom ever made a real pie before. I do remember her having awesome apple coffee cakes though.
Katie @ Katrina's Clean Cooking
Haha, my keyboard is definitely clogged with ‘je ne sais quoi’ at the moment, tooπ
The great thing about Fall is that it’s not freezing cold like winter, but not boiling hot like summer, and the red, yellow & orange leaves are so pretty! You’re right about the flavours of the season, too – I LOVE apple, pumpkin, cinnamon, etc. etc…
This smoothie looks SO delicious and comforting! I will be making it for a scrumptious & cozy breakfast tomorrow.π Mmmm….
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Lol calling keyboard gunk “je ne sais quoi” is perfection. And the only thing I wish as different about fall is that it was longer. Here it feels like it only lasts 2 weeks!
Emily Swanson
That totally made me smile and chuckle a bit cause I’m always looking at my keyboard going, ‘Wow how did this get so messy?’ π And a warm smoothie actually sounds really good for fall; it sounds like a bowl of warm oatmeal.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It actually feels so nice when it’s clean. Kind of crazy how you don’t even notice and then it’s like “wow.”

You and the Hubby are both fall junkies. I’m not ready for it yet, as the pile of tomatoes on my counter can attest, although I’m getting there. Apple pie smoothies help. Looking forward to the first fire of the season doesn’t hurt either, although I’m not sure what that’s going to look like with the baby. I’m going to find out though. π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You need something that uses up a lot of tomatoes. Maybe a soup. Or salsa. My mom used to make the best tomato soup. Actually, I should ask her to make some more…

my computer is always a mess. it’s usually from peanut butter lol. I have made apple pies from scratch but tend to gravitate towards crisps instead. and there was something else I was going to say after reading the first little bit of this post and now I forget.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Remind me to never try typing on your computer, then π

I actually love making pies from scratch, especially lattice crusts although sadly haven’t found a good paleo pastry recipe that works for me. I’ve settled for gluten free pastry crusts for holiday pies! Love the idea of a warm smoothie, and um, the photos are fab, just as I predicted π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You make those fancy crusts?!? That’s so awesome. I honestly don’t even think I’ve ever eaten a pie with a crust like that…
Ellen @ My Uncommon Everyday
My keyboard (and somehow my screen…?) certainly get gross. I do a lot of working while eating, etc. and I guess that just comes with the territory. That said, I’ve been trying to clean them more regularly lately because that feels like a good thing to do. Also, it’s really hard to edit pictures if you’re trying to get rid of a spot that’s not actually in the picture…
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Lol! I’ve definitely done that before.
