1. First and foremost, Happy Halloween!! Believe it or not, today really is October 31st, which means it really is Halloween. Cray.zee.
2. That being said… it doesn’t even remotely feel like Halloween over in these parts. I don’t know what it is, but that eerie ghoulishness is just missing from the air, know what I mean? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that we don’t have any snow when we’re usually buried in it by now, but yeah… just not feeling it this year.
3. On that note… does anyone else get the feeling that Halloween is kind of dying off? I’ve barely seen any decorated houses, and most stores are already rockin’ the Christmas gear. Me? I didn’t even carve my pumpkins or buy any candy. I live in a secure building so I don’t get any trick-or-treaters coming around, but I’ve noticed a decline in kids in general. Back in my day, the streets used to be absolutely packed with kids, but now? I don’t really see that many out anymore.
4. Maybe a little festive music will help set the mood?

5. Newp… didn’t work. But I’ll probably be walking around singing that song all day now, which is fine by me because Nightmare Before Christmas just so happens to be one of my favourite movies of all time, Halloween or otherwise. Confession: I’m the biggest wimp when it comes to horror movies, or at least I used to be — I can’t say for sure anymore since it’s probably been 10+ years since I’ve watched one (The Ring in 2002).
6. Let’s mix a little Throwback Thursday action in with today’s Thinking Out Loud post, shall we? How cute was I in my homemade dinosaur costume, circa 1990? Awww. My mom made it for me and it remains my favourite costume to this day… I think it’s actually still buried somewhere in my parents’ basement. Huh. I wonder if I can pawn it off on my future kids…
7. One of my favourite parts about trick-or-treating when I was a kid? Going through my stash at the end of the night and trading candy with my friends. Did you guys ever do that? And if you did, do you remember how seriously you took it? Like… each candy had a concrete value and you’d only trade for something of equal value, whether that meant a 1:1 or 1:2 trade? Ohhh good times.
8. So let’s talk candy. We all had (have) our favourites, and then the kind that made us want to go back and egg the houses of the people that gave them to us. My best of the best? KitKats and Skittles. The ones that put neighbours on my [egg] hit-list? That weird individually wrapped fudge/taffy that was always hard as rocks. Or peanuts! I’m not sure if it’s still a thing, but people used to hand out peanuts back in the day. Stank.freaking.eye.
9. I’m going to share my exciting Halloween night plans with you guys. Are you ready? Brace yourselves. Tonight I plan to: lounge around my place in my pink PJ’s, toss in The Nightmare Before Christmas, spend some time with J, and hopefully find some motivation to make some homemade candy. I was thinking about these Twix bars, buuuuut AB/chocolate cups are a serious possibility as well.
10. And to end things on a completely random and unrelated note… I burnt the roof of my mouth on steamed broccoli the other day. Who does that?!?! I mean, who’s so eager to eat broccoli that they’ll risk burning their mouth on it?! I am, apparently. Feel free to judge and/or laugh.
Have a happy Thursday and a safe Halloween! 😀
. – . – . – .
What are your plans for tonight?
Favourite Halloween movie? Are you a fan of horror flicks?
Favourite Halloween candy? I have a hunch that Reese’s is going to be a big one…
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli
You know, Reese’s used to be my number one favorite candy, but over the years, I’ve just lost the taste for them. I even had one a few weeks ago and it just didn’t WOW me like they used to. My second favorite growing up was a Baby Ruth (it’s got peanuts so no treats for ‘Manda) but I haven’t had one of those in YEARS! But I will say M&M’s are making a fast and steady comeback into my life…even the milk chocolate ones! I know, who am I??
I totally agree with the whole dying of Halloween thing. I remember as a kid being one of HUNDREDS going around the neighborhood, but you just don’t see that much anymore. I think more and more parents are getting together for those Trunk or Treat and group functions nowadays…guess it’s the “fear” of going door to door. Same reason kids don’t do the whole fundraising thing anymore…so sad, I have fond memories of going around haggling people to buy candy bars and Christmas gift wrap from me! Lol
I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally wanted to include a Halloween throwback picture last week, but I didn’t get my scanner working until THIS week! Grrr! I made a fine looking Howard the Duck too! 😉 And omg, I can’t STAND scary movies! I’m such a weenie! But for some odd reason I really want to see the new Carrie! Ha! I’ll probably have nightmares for weeks!
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables
Oh my gosh your little dinosaur costume is the cutest thing EVER!!! You are so adorable.
It didn’t really feel like halloween here. I think maybe because it was on a week day? I don’t know!
Jan @ sprouts n squats
You are in very good company for a number of reasons – firstly in Australia we don’t really celebrate Halloween at all so to say I am not feeling ‘halloweeny’ would be an understatement!!
Secondly OMG I love Kitkats….like seriously love them!
Thirdly you are way too cute in that dinosaur costume that is so cool your mum went to the trouble of making it for you.
Fourthly…I’m out of things… Happy Friday!! <3
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope
I used to love Halloweentown and Hocus Pocus – totally lame Disney Channel movies lol, but they were actually pretty good!
Gina @ Health, Love, and Chocolate
It so didn’t feel like Halloween over in these parts either. I spent my night doing laundry and eating sushi, which although not very Halloween-y was still nice. I wouldn’t have minded some Halloween flowers though…lucky girl. 😉
kris
Happy Halloween! I definitely wasn’t feeling halloweeny this year. If my mom’s bday were not on Halloween I would probably have overlooked it completely this year. I totally get what you’re saying with the lack of decor. I feel like all the stores missed halloween and went straight on to Christmas.
I’m sooo not into scary movies. The last one I watched was Signs (circa 2002) – if that even counts as a scary movie – but after that I realized I don’t like scaring myself and am better off just not watching them.
Your evening sounds perfect! Have a good night!
Cassie
I had no big Halloween plans tonight… handed out “candy” AKA pretzels… kids were not enthused. I should have lightened up on my health nutness for one night.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
At least you didn’t hand out toothbrushes 😛
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Healthy Kitchen
I feel like Halloween is really dying off too. I mean when I was a kid the streets used to be crowded to the max with kids in costumes. Tonight? We only got FIVE trick or treaters! It’s so bizarre.
My Halloween plans are nada. I tried to organize a party with my friends, but making plans with them is seriously like pulling teeth. So I gave up trying. 😛
My favourite Halloween candy is Caramilk bars and Hershey’s Cookies ‘n Cream!
Kelsey @ Ramblings of Change
I’m definitely not feeling Halloweeny either – which stinks because my boyfriend is REALLY into this year (fake contacts and everything!) I feel like once I stopped trick-or-treating, it sort of died for me. Looking back, I was obviously just in it for the candy!
But for the night – I’m going to be zombie survivor/killer. So I guess being able to look tough (and awesome) for the night will help.
Eating 4 Balance
Happy Halloween Amanda! Oh man, I couldn’t even imagine having white, snow-covered ground during October. I usually am crossing my fingers for December snow. Although it has snowed once or twice here already, it just hasn’t stuck.
Ouch. Broccoli burn. That sounds painful.
Favorite Halloween movie: Halloweentown.
Favorite Halloween candy: Kit-Kats.
Angela
I used to get so annoyed with the people that used to hand out pencils or other non-candy items -_- My favorite were the mini Snickers! And I loved it when I got loot bags that people wrapped full of different kinds of treats!
Alexandra
AHHHHH I love all the randomness and epic Halloween themed everything about this post! And for the record, you make the cutest dino 😉
Favorite Halloween movie is either the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown or Hocus Pocus! 🙂
And fave candy…well…your hunch was right! Reese’s all the way for me!!!
Happy Halloween friend!
Alex @ therunwithin
I agree, there is less hype around it but I also wonder if it is just that we are now older and don’t make such a big deal out of it. I mean it was the school part of it that made me so excited and actually got me in the spirit. Without that, it is different. Plus being in a city, I feel like it is a lot less anyways because no one can trick or treat in apartment buildings… I am so intrigued by those candies.. I love companies that are not found in the US
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
All the more reason to visit Canada 😀
Rebecca
I’ve also felt like Halloween is dying off. I don’t even know of any Halloween parties this year and even the more party-driven people I know/am friends with aren’t going to one. I feel like the meaning and excitement behind holidays as a whole is dying off…which is really sad.
Liz @ Carpe Diem and Run
1) Aero bars are the only kind of chocolate I like – so jealous!
2) It doesn’t feel like Halloween here either 🙁
Arman @ thebigmansworld
I’d give you a run for your money regarding being a scardey cat….the ring was the last (and one of like 3) horror movies I’d ever seen….argh 2003 flashbacks.
You ate HOT broccoli? That’s what happens when you don’t wait for it to cool or eat it cold 😉
Seeing as halloween is MIA here, my favourite candy used to be mint aero or caramel fudge. These days, its plain chocolate, and I love really dark one- yesterday i got some of the bakers chocolate which apparently you can eat as it is…so tempted to try it!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The Ring was the last horror movie I watched too — in 2002. It gave me nightmares for about 2 months, so I swore off horror flicks after that. And I remember resorting to eating those bakers chocolate squares when there was no other chocolate in the house. I hated dark chocolate when I was younger, but love it now. Funny how that works…
Emily
Happy Halloween!
I’ll be working the closing shift at the restaurant tonight and I have a shoot early in the morning so there definitely won’t be anything exciting happening for me. Oh well. We DO get to dress up for work though- I’m making the most of that. (:
Enjoy your relaxing night in! And extra kit-kats for me- those are my favorite!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine
I always loved dumping out my huge pillowcase of candy and sorting all the items into piles, like MnMs here, snickers there. I then my brother and I would trade and so on! I liked just looking at it to it was so fun haha!
I feel you on the burned mouth thing! I have no patience when it coming to letting my food or tea cool off and the roof of my mouth is burned right now from drinking hot tea. The skin keeps peeling off, ew ;P
Jess(ica) @CookingIsMySport
I think one of the reasons why I personally don’t feel ‘Halloweeny’ very much is because I don’t live on my university campus anymore. There’s NOTHING that will make you be more aware of Halloween like a college campus- I’m not a partier by any means, but I will say that it’s a real party atmosphere. Lots of tricks and treats…literally. Needless to say I spent most Halloweens barricaded in my dorm rooms and apartments while I listened to the carnage happening outside lol
My plans for tonight won’t be too different from any other, besides keeping with the tradition me and my twin have of watching the Disney cartoon Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It’s just something we’ve done for years on Halloween without fail.
I’m the biggest wuss when it comes to scary movies. I just don’t watch them. I can’t even remember the last horror flick I saw…does “Signs” count?
When I was a little girl, I was a HUGE fan of those chewy orange pumpkin candies. I ate too many of them honestly, which is probably why I don’t eat them anymore- the thought of them kinda makes me nauseous. Nowadays, I think my favorite ‘Halloween’ candy would be the generic candy bars that you can honestly get year-round: Snickers, Butterfinger, Hershey’s Cookies and Cream, Twix, Reese PB Cups, One Hundred Grand, and Crunch Bars. Jolly Ranchers are always great too.
…Darn it, now I really want some candy. Thanks lol
<3
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Very true! That’s actually one of the [many] reasons I miss being in school — having an excuse to dress up and not feeling completely out of place. And your movie tradition with Sleepy Hollow sounds like the one I have with Nightmare Before Christmas — happens every year without fail.
