There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you…
I’m leaving. I know it’s sudden, but I just didn’t know how to say it. People change. It’s not you, it’s me.ย I love you but I’m not “in love” with you. I need some time to find myself. You deserve better. I can’t give you what you need. There’s someone else…
Ahhh I’m just messin’ with ya. I mean, Iย am leaving, but it’s only for a handful of days and I’ve already prewritten all of my posts so you probably won’t even know I’m gone ๐
So where is it that I’m off to? BC. British Columbia. The west coast of Canada. My parents have been entertaining the idea of moving down there after they retire, and when they said they were going to head over and scope out the scenery, I basically threw myself at them and begged to come along… in a dignified way, of course ๐ย Why? Because BC isย gorgeous and I haven’t been there in far too long. Also, because the drive out there means I get to see the mountains in fall, which is something I never managed to knock off my fall bucket list last year. See? Point #2…
The drive time is approximately 12 hours to get to where we want to go, and I haven’t actually been on a road trip with my parents since I was a teeny tiny little thing, so time will tell if I made a wise choice or not. For now, though? I’m giddy as a schoolgirl.ย Tee hee!
I’m also frantically trying to tie up loose ends before we leave first thing tomorrow morning. I’m really fortunate in that I can take work, school, and blogging with me wherever I go, but taking them with me and actually putting any time into them while I’m gone are two very different things… I may or may not have a tendency to consciously forget (read: ignore) responsibilities while I’m away, but there’s one thing I take pretty seriously when I travel, and that’s food prep.
I may have mentioned that travelling with allergies is a bit of a pain? Because it really is… and the fact that we’ll be spending a lot of time in a car out in the middle of nowhere means that plenty of food has to be toted around to prevent both starvationย and boredom. After all, there’s nothing like a little bit of munchin’ to make the miles go by faster, right? ๐ So here’s a little taste of some of the snacks I’m packing…
Chips…ย because sometimes you just need the crunch.
Popchipsย //ย Barefruit apple chips.
Fruit…ย because I can’t go a day without [lots of] it.
Applesauce squeezy packets (Gogo Sqeezย and Mott’s) // Raisins (Newman’s Own)
Apples and bananas.
Veggies…ย because I’ve been craving them like crazy lately.
Baby carrots and cocktail tomatoes.
Nuts…ย because they’re deliciousย and nutritious.
Blue Diamond flavoured almonds.
Bars…ย because sometimes you run into emergency situations.
Lifebars // Raw Bites… These were sent to me by Lucie and they’re basically a European version of Larabars.
Breakfast necessities…ย because it’s why I get out of bed every morning.
Cereal (Puffins and Kashi Cinnamon Harvest) // raw oats.
General necessities…ย because I never leave home without AB… and protein powder just in case.
Maisie Jane’s roasted almond butter // Protein powder (Vega and Sunwarrior)
Random odds & ends… because… well… just because.
Water bottle // vitamins // spork.
. – . – . – .
So yup… I basically bring an entire cooler’s worth of food with me when I travel, but I’m not a huge fan of hunger, so I like to keep it at bay by being prepared… especially if I’m going to be in close quarters with other human beings ๐
And on that note, it’s time for me to take off and get started on my day. My food is prepped, but my suitcase is currently empty and I imagine that I’ll need some clothes and toiletries in addition to food — they might come in handy ๐ So packing, working, and studying are on the agenda for today, but I’ll see you guys tomorrow for WIAW!
Happy Tuesday, peoples!
Are you a fan of road trips, or would you rather fly?
Do you pack [lots of] food when you travel?
Random: can you read in the car or do you get motion sickness like me?
hanny
I noticed you have the vega! Have you tried the vanilla Chia? I’m wondering if you can bake with it? Like the vega protein powder?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve tried the vanilla chai, and it’s amazing! But I’ve never tried baking with it, so I’m afraid I can’t give you an answer!
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli
I LOVE to fly, but if there’s good scenery, I don’t mind a good road trip…so long as I get to be DJ! ๐ And omg, I pack an INSANE amount of food…always more than I need too, but hey, better to be overprepared than caught somewhere in a totally “hangry” state, am I right? Haha! The only thing that stinks about driving/riding is that like you, I get the WORST motion sickness! Not the I’m gonna heave kind, just a really bad dizziness that usually develops into a headache…no bueno!
So jealous of all the great sights from your trip (since I totally Insta-stalked you today and saw all of them!). Hope you’re having a great time with the parentals!
Kat
No way!! I live in Kelowna ๐ It’s a gorgeous area, I must say. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. You’ll have to do a recap of what you thought about the area!!!! Have a blast ๐
Kelsey @ Ramblings of Change
I love a little bit of both! Flying feels like a luxury to me, so I always try to make the most out of it and use it as time for me to relax! Driving I don’t mind, but snacks + tea are a necessity! Whenever I/we drive to the cities, I’m the girl packing all her produce + snacks and even my must-haves for making chai tea lattes on the road! I loved seeing your must-haves – I’ll have to remember some of them for my next trip! I can’t wait until school is done and we can do some more “fun” traveling! I can sometimes read in the car, but I get this weird anxiety (don’t worry, it isn’t bad!) so I usually can’t? Maybe if I could lounge in the backseat…
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables
Have a fun trip!!! It looks like you’re well prepared ๐
Laura
I HATE road trips!! Hate Hate Hate! Aside from my car sickness, they are just so boring to me! Planes are fun, and scary…therefore not boring. Haha.
One time when I was going from London to Paris I got stopped and randomly checked. They wanted to check my camera bag but the guy literally had to dig through my stash of snacks before he found the camera. He asked if I was planning for the famine haha. I actually ended up leaving him with a granola bar because he said he hadn’t heard of that kind before. I think it was a Gnu bar or something. It was his lucky day!
Gina @ Health, Love, and Chocolate
Have a wonderful trip, girl! I can just picture you pulling out your applesauce packets and raisin boxes. ๐
Emily
YAY! Have so, so, so much fun. The best part is that I know you’ll do a full recap when you’re back…and I can’t wait. (:
PS: I’ve been craving veggies like a mad-woman lately too. After [kind of] avoiding them for months, it’s nice to actually want them again!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s been a nice change for me as well. I think my brain is finally getting over the whole “rebel against all the healthy food” phase it was in.
Karey @ Nutty About Health
I love road trips & dislike flying. I’m with ya on having to bring lots of snacks… hunger in a car with people = not good. I’m not fun to be around when I get hangry. I can’t read in the car either, unless it’s a very straight, smooth road – any change in speed or direction & I feel sick.
Have a great trip!! ๐
Kate @ Trekking Kate
I love road trips! They were always the highlight of my summer growing up, and now on the rare occurrence, when I’m not the one driving I soak it up! I love watching the changing landscape outside the window!
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables
I always pack a ton of food when I travel… or else I starve! I’m starting to think you and I are twins separated at birth! ๐
I also get car sick… no reading for this girl! I do love to sleep in the car though!
Arman @ thebigmansworld
I must say when I saw the title packing….part of me was hoping it was for a spontaneous trip to Australia ๐
This is will interesting to see how a road trip with your parents pan out- it’ll probably be quite enjoyable, now that your all grown up and mature (in most aspects ;)). I haven’t been on a road trip in ages, but I’ll be driving up to Sydney later in the year which is a good 9 hour drive so I should scope some good company. I always have a stash of snacks with me- I hate being stuck somewhere without access to food! I lol’d at all the apple and cinnamon combinations you have- chips, bars, the actual apple and cinnamon…I write this as I’m eating that combination too.
I’m fortunate not to get motion sickness when reading- but too much and my eyes go cross eyed!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I wish it was for a trip to Australia! It’s still on my bucket list ๐
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles
I’ve always wanted to go to Western Canada! Enjoy and I expect to see LOTS of pictures of mountains because you know how much I love my mountains.
Alex @ therunwithin
oh man what a fun way to spend a long weekend. extra long if you are leaving tomorrow. I am jealous, pack me away? I need a vacation stat. I am the opposite, i rarely pack food (I know the girl with Celiac, you think I would ever learn) I am getting better at it now but working on it
Floey
I love road trips! Have fun :D:D:D.
Pistachios were always my favorite roadie snack ๐
Shira
I love to drive for the ease of throwing all your stuff in the back, the views, the comfort of being able to stop and the fun of being bored in the car if that makes sense!! The best inside jokes and deep/ridiculous convos come from 4 hour drives up North ๐ But I like to get places fast because I do get motion sick.. and speaking of I cannot read in cars at All. Like not even maps (er, or GPS these days ha).. but I can read a little in planes so there is a big benefit!
I always pack healthy (allergy free!)snacks, but honestly because I get motion sick I don’t end up eating much of it and usually buy things like herbal tea, pretzels, and ginger-ale for my nausea :/
Olivia @ Liv Lives Life
British Columbia is just gorgeous – well, the part I went to was, anyway! I spent a few days in the Victoria area, and loved it.
I hope you have fun!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Victoria is where we’re eventually making our way to as well. I was there when I was younger, but it was so long ago that I can’t even remember.
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries
LOL You really had me there for a sec! ๐
Love all of your snack ideas. We’re taking a roadtrip out to California at the end of the week, and I’m already making a crazy list of all the food I’m bringing. Larabars, peanut butter, trail mix, fruit, baby carrots, cereal, oatmeal, etc.
Liz @ The Girl on Fire Now
Have an awesome time – and you actually really freaked me out when you said you were leaving!!
Danica @ It's Progression
safe travels!!
Lucie@FitSwissChick
Have a safe trip hunn! Glad you have the bars – they make you think of me at least for a bite ๐ enjoy your time off!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Awwr lady! You know I could never forget ya ๐ You better be having an amazing time in Spain!
Alisha @ Alisha's Appetite
Ooooooo! Have a blast with your family! I’m going to guess the scenery is straight up GORG! I love your snacks you packed- particularly the nut butter and the popchips. Those things are heavily addicting, but in the best way possible!
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots
a.) have a blast! b.) please report how the blueberry almonds are, they intrigue me!
Kat
I looooove road trips, probably because I’ve been doing them since I was 2 to go see my daddy. It’s about a 6 hour drive to his house, so I have no issues with being stuck in a car. I’m one of those people who can read, write, listen to music, ect without getting car sick, so long drives never bother me ๐ I hope you have sooo much fun with your parents!
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Healthy Kitchen
Have fun!!! I hope you survive the 12 hour trip there and back with your parents. I don’t know if I would haha. ๐
I bring food when I travel depending on the situation. If I’m flying I bring less because it’s more of a hassle. But if I’m road tripping I definitely pack some snacks like fruit, homemade trail mix, crackers, etc. And I usually bring a jar of almond butter/soy nut butter if it’s a longer trip because there’s no way I can go that long without it! ๐
Cassie
I did a lot of road trips (well, four) this summer but I would rather fly… I just like to be somewhere.
I pack SO MANY snacks with me. Similar to you – fruit, nuts, jerky, peanut butter, coconut water, breakfast foods… I don’t toy around with breakfast.
I can read in the car… but last trip I was on I just kind of hung out and watched out the window.
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
Shoot, you never should have unpacked your suitcase from the HLS.
Have a great trip! I hear BC is absolutely breathtaking, although twelve hours in a car with anyone might make me a little crazy, especially if I couldn’t read. What are you going to do? Other than eat all those delicious snacks.
Speaking of, I always pack snacks when I go on road trips, and if I plan on being gone for any length of time (i.e. a couple of days), I’ll bring a cooler full of food too. I brought fresh basil and rosemary on my last vacation in Fort Erie, Canada. I smuggled them across the problem. I’m sure it was legal (cough, cough).
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I was just thinking that I should never have unpacked ๐ And I plan on playing “I Spy” ๐
Courtney @ Don't Blink. Just Run.
Have an awesome trip! I love road trips!
We tend to pack some traveling snacks, but not a ton of food (depending on where we’re going/what we’re doing).
I don’t generally get motion sickness in the car, but if I read, forget about it!
Parita @ myinnershakti
My family used to take multiple road trips every year when we were younger – like up and down the east coast. We don’t do that anymore because time is of the essence since school and work are top priorities now. And I definitely can’t read while in the car. In fact, a moving vehichle plus me plus a book equals recipe for disaster!
lindsay
you are set! you know us, we pack a ton because of GF allergies. so i can relate. Now, go kick that bucket!
Jemma
Those Blue Diamond snack packs look fab! Have a fabulous trip!
Tamara
I love your snackage!! Very organized. Also, I really want one of those sporks! Where did you get it, may I ask? xo
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I got mine at a local health food store called Planet Organic. The company that makes them is called Light My Fire http://www.lightmyfire.com/products/wild-kitchen-collection/spork/spork-original.aspx
Tamara
Thanks so much!! Ha, how cool that they have a lefty spork. I wonder how that works…
morgan
I recently traveled from Alaska to Arizona & in my carry-on I packed baggies of steamed sweet poatotes, roasted Kabocha, fresh apple slices & cooked quinoa (it was over 24 hours of travel time hence the massive amount of food!). I also saw two other people in airports with mini coolers & it made me happy ๐ when we travel, my hubs calls it my “bag o food” and I always make sure to have Quest bars & carrots for him (I am slowly converting him healthy- he hasn’t caught on yet) I love to travel by plane but we usually go by boat which is an adventure in itself- have a wonderful trip! My appreciation for my parents has grown tremendously as I get older- you will have an experience for sure ๐
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Confession: I’m bringing roasted kabocha with me as well. The thought of having to go without it for a week just makes me die a little inside.
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl
Sounds like you are off to a VERY fun rest of the week…. I’m just a tad jealous! Road trips are so much fun, as long as you’re stocked up with plenty of great snacks and it looks like you are. ๐
Brittany
NOOO reading in the car for me, I get sick too. AHH just the thought makes me feel off! WHOOO for a getaway! I don’t do that well on longer road trips, I get antsy sitting for too long. All these snack are amazing, WAY TO BE PREPARED!
