Yesterday.was.hot.
I realize that may be nothing compared to the temperatures that some of you have to deal with, but I’m Canadian… we’re not made for that kind of weather! Case in point: the power went off for about an hour in my part of downtown due to the huge number of people cranking up the AC, and I definitely contributed to that. Thankfully, there are some steps one can take to beat the heat. For example…
Do not… start your day with hot tea…
In my defence… yeaaaaah I’ve got nothing. This tea is amazing and I’m an addict.
Do not… eat a hot breakfast…
Eggy oats layered with with plain Greek yogurt and topped with almond butter, and honey.
In my defence, IĀ do wait for them to cool off to room temperature before digging in.
Do… snack on plenty of fresh/frozen fruit…
Do… eat fresh salads for lunch…
… along with cold leftovers…
Sesame chicken stir fry.
Do not… opt to walk to your afternoon hair appointment instead of driving in a car that has AC …
Do… linger in the frozen foods section of a convenience store on your way back home…
Do… drink plenty of cold fluids…
Trilogy kombucha // Starbucks Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher
… and make sure to eat the ice afterwards….
Do… enjoy cool, creamy desserts from the depths of your fridge…
Zensoy chocolate/vanilla pudding
Do not… turn on your oven – eat breakfast for dinner instead…
Yogurt mess – Plain Greek yogurt mixed with frozen banana, chunky applesauce, Kashi Cinnamon Harvest crumbles, almond butter, and cinnamon.
Do… end the night on a cold and creamy note…
Vanilla ice cream // chocolate chips… in a freak thunderstorm.
And that.is.that. – What I Ate [to beat the heat]. Thankfully, yesterday seems to have been a freak incident and we’re back to our more moderate temperatures today. Good thing, too, because temperatures like that definitely don’t do me any favors – not only do I get all lethargic and poofy from storing water like a camel, but my appetite disappears and comes back with a vengeance the next day – I’m already bracing myself for the worst…
Happy Wednesday, friends! š

Do you eat ice?
What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? Favorite add-ins?
What’s the weather like for you right now? What’s your ideal temperature?
Ashley @ Eat Run Live Happy
Okay Amanda I know Candy Crush is addictive and all but I miss your posts! Hope everything is alright with you!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Awwwr thanks love! All is well, I just had some things come up that pushed blogging to the back burner. I’ll be back early next week!
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
It’s not ridiculously hot here in Cleveland, but the humidity is almost unbearable. I love your beat the heat eats, especially all that delicious and colorful fruit. The ice cream’s not bad either. I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago and even tossed in some fresh mint from the garden. It was killer.
meredith
As much as I love chocolate, I tend to favor vanilla ice cream based flavors and then load up on the mix ins like chocolate chips, hot fudge, cookie dough, brownie etc…I care more for the toppings than for the ice cream. And, it is all about the waffle bowl. Chocolate dipped. Just give me the waffle bowl loaded with toppings and I am happy.
Albizia
I don’t eat ice anymore. It brings back bad memories. But the freezer is stuffed with ice cream š The rainy season just ended and it’s been around 35 degrees for a few days already. Today it’s not even cloudy so it feels like hell on earth with this heat and the insane humidity. I keep joking I want to move to Siberia but every time I feel too bad I remember the poor folks in Kuwait who will have to face 50 degrees today (even though they won’t be covered head to toe in sticky sweat because it’s dry there).
Currently I’m craving cherry ice cream with actual cherries inside and maybe some bitter chocolate syrup. Mmm…
Mary Legare Whaley
Ugh. I’m with you on the weather issue. I live in Charleston, South Carolina. It’s the best city in the USA, but summer is rough. We’ve had upper 80s, low 90s for the last few weeks and it’s super humid. And it rains randomly every day because humidity and heat make rain. It’s a vicious cycle. I don’t eat ice because its bad for your teeth. But I love ice cream. Coffee is my favorite flavor, pistachio is a close second.
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables
It’s been raining here, so it has been cooler. We have been wanting warm comfy foods! However, I totally get you. When it is hot out, I crave watermelon, smoothies, and salads!
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Healthy Kitchen
We’ve had the weirdest weather here lately. It was pretty chilly here on Monday and then it got really humid. It seems like every hour it alternates between being hot humid and cold humid – I can’t decide how to dress for this weather! š
My favourite ice cream flavour is a tie between mint chocolate chip and cookies ‘n cream. And for add ins I like anything chocolate: chocolate sauce, Oreo bits, chocolate chips, etc. You can never have too much! Surprisingly I don’t really like chocolate ice cream that much though. Go figure.
Sara @ Nourish and Flourish
Oh, Amanda, I feel your sweat-induced pain! It’s been 108 here for three days straight, and even my heat-loving self has been a little…well, over-heated. Oof. The weather man promised a reprieve tomorrow, though (95!), however he doesn’t have such a great track record, so we’ll see. š Either way, I’ll definitely be snacking on watermelon (4th of July tradition!), and eating ice cream (with pie, of course). Speaking of, my favorite ice cream flavor is either a really good vanilla (an emphasis on good – like super-premium Tahitian or Madagascar vanilla with little vanilla bean flecks), roasted banana (enjoyed for the first time in San Francisco a few months ago), or salted caramel. I’ve been fortunate to taste some other pretty life-changing flavors, too: ricanela (cinnamon and snickerdoodles), and brown sugar with ginger caramel swirl especially memorable. š
Oh, and you’re definitely not crazy for starting your morning with a warm beverage – at least not in my book! Even when it’s sweltering outside, I *always* opt for hot coffee or tea. They’re just not the same when they’re iced! xoxo <3
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I still remember you writing about that roasted banana ice cream – sounds incredible. Hope you’re having a Happy 4th, Sara! <3
Jessie
Ha Ha your twitter tweet had me dying! You are too funny.
I would do anything for some 90 degree temps. It’s 130 here with wind… which causes it to be quite sandy out, you know since we live in the dessert Ha Ha!
Sabrina
Wow I never knew Canada could get so hot! I live in the tropics and is bright and sunny and humid all year round and I like it that way š Although I enjoy winter holidays, I’m definitely not adapted to living in cold places long-term. The cold makes me miserable. Chilled watermelon & watermelon juice on hot days are so refreshing!
Molly@This Life Is Sparkling
I love eating ice, and always would growing up too. My mom and dad would always yell at me (in a loving way of course) telling me I was going to break a tooth. I can’t help it. Crushed ice is my favorite to eat š
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve actually heard that eating ice is bad for your teeth, but sometimes I just can’t help it… I s’pose there are worse vices to have š
Maggie @ Sunnyside Up Smile
The weather is super wacky in SoCal right now- it goes from sunny, dry and 100 degrees to cool, humid and 70 degrees in what seems like mere minutes! My ideal temp is probably sunny and 75, perfect for running and being outside. I like froyo better than ice cream and I usually put cookie dough bites and rainbow sprinkles on top of it! š
Ashley @ AlmostVegGirlie
Our weather’s been a little bipolar here lately! We got up into the upper 90s last week but then it was only in the mid 60s on Monday…I thought it was summer?! Luckily it’s back to more average temps in the 80s now, and 85 is about my ideal temperature. Though I know a lot of people have to deal with humidity on top of 90 degree weather, so I’m lucky to live somewhere dry. Buuuuut I only have A/C at work and in my car, so when I’m at home it gets kinda brutal. I want to move somewhere warmer when I graduate, so having a place with A/C will be non-negotiable!
Kat
GAH this is my life right now. I seriously had oats for breakfast yesterday and was like why the heck did I just do that? DUMBEST decision ever. Tasty decision, but Im not of fan of having to re-apply my powder that has dripped off my face. Ok, I exaggerate slightly, but still. Its hot! And yes to the freezer section. Ive actually been sticking my head into my freezer at home. It’s my new “thinking” spot š
Jenn
Ha! Your post made me laugh. I’m on the east coast of Canada and we’ve been averaging high 20’s lately and I just can’t cope. Meanwhile, I have friends in the south that are telling me that they’re clocking in at almost 120. I feel like such a wimp! š
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Don’t! I’d like to see them handle our winters š
Jenn
ha! true that! š
Although I think you guys get it worse than us.
Liz @ The Girl on Fire Now
I love eating ice, but only at restaurants
I love vanilla ice cream, then mixing in cookie dough chunks and caramel sauce. MMM
The weather is in the upper 80’s and super humid … bleh. My ideal temp is 65-70 max
Nicole @ FruitnFitness
Breakfast for dinner is always a great option! My favorite ice cream flavor is without a doubt pistachio from blue bell, so good!!! I think snacking on frozen fruit is a great way to keep cool in the heat!
Sarah @ A Refining Adventure
It’s H.O.T. here – but that’s to be expected in Alabama. Ummmm…that chicken stir-fry looks delish. Care to share? Also, I could eat my weight in frozen grapes. I introduced my husband to it, and he ate more than me! I’m regretting that move big time.
Here’s to hoping it cools off soon!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I definitely need to share it one of these days! The only problem with sharing stir fry recipes is that I rarely ever have any exact measurements – my stir fries usually involve throwing random things together and hoping for the best.
Olivia @ Liv Lives Life
I love this do and do not list. As much as I love hot weather over cold, I’m kind of a baby when it comes down to it…I’d definitely join you in the refrigerated section. š
Lacey @ Life Hands You Limes
Ooof. We are in the middle of a full blown heat wave -between 104 and 110 F all week long. I have been living off of smoothies and other cold foods, and staying inside as much as possible. You know its too hot when you sweat walking to the mailbox….ideally I like between 75-85 degrees F (like 23-29 C??), a little warmer for swimming. Fav ice cream flavor? Thats totally depends on my mood but I almost always have to have a topping if there isn’t already a mix in!! And rainbow sprinkles never hurt š
Sophia
I love cold leftovers- often better than the first time around- I especially enjoyed cold chicken schnitzel sandwiches on ciabatta last weekend (my nonna makes amazing schnitzel!) it’s fairly mild warm weather here in Genoa- it has been raining a lot though. I really enjoy the warm rainy combination- feels steamy š I think ideal is about 18- 21 degrees (talking Celsius of course ;)) I love the crisp yet not too cool air of spring. Ok ice cream (gelato) I love vanilla, coffee or strawberry the most I think….. Hazelnut and tiramisu aren’t bad sometimes too. As for add ins I have just found lindt lindor gelato- fantastico! Also love chocolate chips but adore sprinkles- rainbow ones, especially on vanilla ice cream- most of the time I’m a purist though š
Khushboo
Oh man eating in the heat sure can be uncomfortable..even more so when u choose the wrong foods! I love these tips and couldn’t agree more- my meals (at least 2 out of 3) tend to be cold: yogurty breakfast, big ass salads for lunch and lots of fruit in between. My coffee preference most definitely changes too- my love for cappuccinos suddenly turn into a love for iced americanos with soy milk!
As for favorite ice cream, you can’t beat vanilla bean…but if we are going to go into the “fancy flavors”, cookie dough for me please!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Well in all fairness, cookie dough is pretty much still vanilla ice cream… just with some fancy add-ins š
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl
Glad your temps are back to normal! I love any ice cream with a banana/nutbutter flavor. Great choice getting the Starbucks Hibiscus Berry Refresher….it always cools me off.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
I will always go for oats even in hot weather š at least your yogurt addition cooled them down so it only half-counts as a hot food? And our weather right now is just weird…it’s cold, rainy and foggy in the morning, but by midday it’s super sunny and around 25. So I drive to work because I think it’s going to rain, and then it ends up being perfect biking weather. Le sigh.
And that slice of watermelon looks like perfection…and may be enough to convince me to buy one this weekend.
Favourite ice cream flavour? Chocolate chip cookie dough. Or cookies and cream. Maybe both? I think I’ve been spoiled by froyo shops lately, because I always add 2-3 flavours so I don’t have to just pick one. As for mixins, chopped Reese’s or M&Ms are particular favourites.
Oh, and I hate ice. I don’t even like putting it in my beverages, so I certainly don’t chew it. And I think I’m with you on the super-appetite today, ever since last night mine’s been constantly nagging at me.
morgan
we had some lovely hot weather a few weeks ago but its gone now š
even when its cold I have to make ice cream though- last night dark chocolate peppermint! hershey’s special dark cocoa powder is amazing & I use essential oils for my mint flavor- its like an energy boost of refreshing goodness! Living in AK I don’t get a lot of hot weather but we went on a cruise last year to Grand Cayman & it was 86 degrees (F) and 80 percent humidity & I was in love! I could move there & just breath the heat all day….why do I live here again??!! š
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I ask myself that question all the time. I hear AK is beautiful, though, so at least you have that š
morgan
it is beautiful here, my whole family lives within 3 miles of each other, three months of the year it is amazing weather outdoors- there are bonuses! just the older I get- the more I envy my parents “snow bird” go south for the winter lives….. lately I am feeling that I am actually a 70 year old trapped in a 30 year old body…
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
I feel you on the heat, all the way from Florida!! Story of my life over here. I feel like I’m in a sauna. I still drink hot coffee and eat a hot breakfast usually, but only because I keep my AC super looooooowwww when I sleep and in the morning š Breakfast for dinner = always a win.
Becky @ Olives n Wine
I do not eat ice – the thought of ice crunching between my teeth gives me the heebee geebees! Ugh, I’m shivering just thinking about it, haha! My ideal temperature is 70 and sunny – warm enough to wear summer clothes but cool enough to not sweat!
Lauren Seserko
Love your post, as always. Trilogy kombucha is my favorite!
Lauren
Everything looks delicious! I can’t believe how good that ice cream looks. It’s been years since I’ve had true ice cream. My favorite flavor is probably vanilla mixed with Saltine crackers and chocolate syrup…it’s something my grandpa and mom taught me….sounds weird, but it is delicious!
Emma @ Life's A Runner
OH. MY GOD. The heat. I was thisclose to booking a flight out of here, no joke. We don’t have AC, so there were approximately 9 thousand Starbucks runs made for iced passion tea. I actually do not understand how some people think this is “moderate”. They live in 40+ degrees! Did you enjoy that thunderstorm right after, though? Classic Alberta, haha.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I did NOT like the thunderstorm, mostly because it didn’t do any serious raining and only made things all muggy and annoying. Plus I had to bring my plants inside so that the crazy winds wouldn’t tear them to smithereens.
Katherine
don’t eat ice – but DO eat ice cream! my favorite is Big Gay Ice Cream in new york city, other than that, any soft serve will do (yes, i own a soft serve machine…) ideal temperature to me is 76 and sunny, with a breeze 8) stay cool !!
