A little while ago, I came across this article on Thought Catalog called “What the Way You Eat Most of Your Meals Says About You,” and I couldn’t help but laugh when I spotted my eating style…
Meals?… What are them??? You eat snacks all throughout the day, never actually having a full-blown meal. As a kid, when cereal commercials said “this is part of a complete breakfast” it baffled you because a bowl of cereal is not only a full, hearty breakfast, it’s capable of being consumed as any other meal through the day. You often find yourself eating things served in pouches, bar form or handfuls, and you’re completely okay with that. You are living proof that the suggested servings on the nutritional pyramid are asinine. Do you, satisfied snacker, do you.
While I wouldn’t necessarily say that I never eat a legitimate meal (this girl loves her breakfasts), there’s no denying that I’m definitely a [satisfied] snacker… More often than not, I end up snacking my way from breakfast to dinner instead of trying to fit an actual lunch in there, which is why I’m kind of in love with this month’s What I Ate Wednesday theme…
If you’re not familiar with WIAW, it’s basically a day that’s devoted to documenting some eats and talking about all things food; aka: a day where it’s not safe for me to approach my computer unless I’m very well fed. It’s a day to get tempted inspired by the delicious eats of others, and maybe inspire others with some delicious eats of your own.
On that note, I wanted to share a collection of some of my favorite snacks with you guys. Maybe you’ll get some good ideas that’ll help you during those times where you find yourself standing in the kitchen, rifling through your cupboards with no idea as to what you want to much on. Oh yes, I’ve been there…
. – . – . – .
It should probably come as no surprise that cereal has been my #1 favorite thing to snack on lately…
Whether it’s with milk, yogurt, or simply on it’s own, it’s pretty much a guarantee that I’m eating cereal at least 2 or 3 times a day. I know cereal tends to get a pretty bad rap, but if you look for those that are made with whole grains and don’t contain too much sugar, then you have yourself an easy, healthy, and delicious snack.
Next up? Fruit…
I’m not sure exactly how many servings of fruit I go through in a day, but I’m going to go ahead and assume that it’s somewhere in the vicinity of 5 or 6. What can I say? I’m a big fan of nature’s candy. I add it to my yogurt, cereal, smoothies, and oats, or I just eat it on it’s own with either a sprinkle of cinnamon or a spoonful of almond butter. Delicious and nutritious – it’s basically a win-win.
And speaking of almond butter, that just so happens to be next on the list…
Honestly, I could put almond butter on pretty much anything, and it’s just as satisfying when eaten straight up out of the jar. It’s easily my favorite nut butter, with coconut coming in a close second…
And no snack list would be complete without yogurt…
Yogurt messes are pretty much perfect. Not only are they wonderfully filling, but they let me combine all my favorite foods (fruit, cereal, nut butter) into one delicious bowl of goodness. It’s actually kind of scary how much yogurt I go through on a pretty regular basis.
I also like to make sure that I always have some kind of homemade treats on hand…
Lately I’ve been all about the banana bread and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, but every so often muffins and protein bites show up too.
And for those times where you need something a little more grab-and-go?
Fruits, veggies, cheesestrings, hardboiled eggs, bars, Popchips, and apple chips tend to make up the bulk of my packed snacks.
And finally, no snack list would be complete without chocolate…
Whether in bar, chip, or pudding form, sometimes only chocolate will do…
. – . – . – .
So there you have it – some of my favorite things to snack on as of late. I try to make healthy and balanced choices when it comes to what I snack on, buuuuuuut I’m not going to sit here and pretend that ends up happening all the time. Sometimes a girl just needs a bowl of ice cream or a handful of candy, and that’s perfectly alright too.
Happy Wednesday, friends! 😀
What was the last thing you snacked on? A big bowl of cereal last night before bed.
Three things you end up snacking on most: Bananas, cereal, yogurt.
Lunch is overrated, true or false? True.
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli
Girl, I am right there with you on snacking the day away. Lunch is ENTIRELY overrated! Actually, that was one thing I noticed when I started with Intuitive Eating was that lunch as an actual MEAL was pretty much non-existent (most days anyway). Now that I’m back to work, “lunch” is actually synonymous with breakfast since it’s the meal that I eat when I wake up around 3 o’clock in the afternoon so most of the time during the week, I stick 3 meals and a couple of snacks, but during the weekends, I definitely get back to “doing me” by having 2-3 snacks during the midday hours.
Last thing I snacked on: White chocolate-covered popcorn mixed with M&M’s (otherwise known as CRACK) left for me by my coworker (otherwise known as my drug dealer) 😉
Three things I snack on the most: Quest bars, yogurt, crackers/cereal (almost always by the handful!)
Gina @ Health, Love, and Chocolate
Sometimes I feel like we are the exact same person…;-)
Laura Agar Wilson (@lauraagarwilson)
Snacking is awesome. I’ve been having a lot of cottage cheese with fruit as a bit of a change to the usual yoghurt. Delish!
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Healthy Kitchen
I agree with this whole list – especially fruit, yogurt and homemade baked (or unbaked) goods. I’m always snacking on those. I can’t wait for all the summer fruit to be ready! I’m planning on eating my body weight in cherries, peaches and berries on a daily basis haha.
The last snack I had was coconut Greek yogurt with frozen mango chunks before bed last night.
Sarah @ A Refining Adventure
MMM! Right there with you…LOVE fresh fruits!!! Summertime is the best because of all the fresh fruits and vegetables.
Annie @ my fuel and fitness diaries
Oh yeah, lunch could just not exist as far as Im concerned. I often fall prey to society’s idea that you need to eat lunch as a meal….but I would much rather eat something at 10, then a little more at noon, then a little more at 2, then workout and 4, then eat dinner. Glad to know there are others out there like this!!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Sounds like the perfect snacking schedule to me! I’m pretty sure I follow something almost exactly like that.
Annie @ my fuel and fitness diaries
Us “snackers” need to stick together girl!
Ashley @ AlmostVegGirlie
Lunch is really overrated, as are most meals other than dinner! I just prefer snacking, so I’m not uncomfortably full and I can get little tastes of things here and there. And I’m just never that inspired when it comes to lunch, so more often than not, I end up just snacking instead of sitting down to a planned meal. Snacking is a huge thing for me when I end up making something too! I always have to ‘taste test’ and sometimes it ruins my appetite for dinner haha.
Sarah @ Feeeding the Brain and Body
Cheesestrings are perfect for on the go snacks, as are popchips! I usually have a full blown meal for breakfast and dinner, and then snack 3-4 times throughout the day. It all really depends on my work schedule though. Oikos is my favourite Canadian brand of yogurt. 🙂
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile
I think the nut butter is my favorite 😉 But you can never go wrong with fruit! I always snack when I’m preparing a meal. I laugh at myself because I sit there eating carrots before I start to make dinner haha
kaity @ kaityscooking
you are 100% correct of not coming hungry to read WIAW posts. I want to eat pretty much everyones food. Yours especially, you make a freaking banana look good and that is very hard to do haha. In the warmer months I feel I am a much bigger snacker. The cold months, I fill up on hearty meals more often. Totally think lunch is overrated, that’s why I always have a big smoothie because I know my little snacks would not be enough whatsoever that I’d be ravenous later in the night. My 3 snacks is nut butter, bananas, and protein muffins. YUM!
Sarah Pie
So much almond butter!! And I love your yogurt messes 🙂 I’m a big fan of cereal messes myself (though sometimes these contain yogurt so I guess we’re on the same page).
What was the last thing you snacked on? Giant dinner salad (though I’m making popcorn as I type this)
Three things you end up snacking on most: Cereal, carrots, almond butter
Lunch is overrated, true or false? Totally true
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Have you ever tried adding yogurt AND milk? It tastes amazing, especially if you’re using vanilla almond milk or coconut milk.
Meghan @ After the Ivy League
Love that thought catalog article! I’m a snacker too I’d say, especially on the weekends when I’m left to my own defenses in the kitchen and I don’t have to pack a “real” lunch etc. love all of these snack ideas! It’s actually been way too long since I had a full blown yogurt mess. Need to do something about that asap.
Alex @ therunwithin
I am a snack monster too, I just can’t stomach big meals. it throws off my whole stomach issue thing. which is why whole 30 is tough because snacks that I was so used to are not that easy to grab with the restrictions booo.
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles
“…during those times where you find yourself standing in the kitchen, rifling through your cupboards with no idea as to what you want to much on.” –> so then you munch on everything and a half an hour later realize that you should probably buy more food because you’ve eaten most of it. 😉
Barbara
Agreed! Lunch is definitely my least favorite meal! Sometimes I try and have like 3 snacks at once and call that lunch haha but lately I have been trying to be good and have a salad or sandwich or something balanced but that trend is fading quickly! My favorite snacks are definitely fruit, trail mix, yogurt, cottage cheese, and luna bars…i am all about sweet when it comes to my snacks though for sure!! veggies and hummus or hard boiled eggs or anything of that nature basically never appear in my snacks!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh girl I’m the same.exact.way with sweet snacks. I’ll eat an egg or some cheese if I feel like I need some more protein, but the closest I come to craving a savory snack is sour cream & onion Popchips 😉
Olivia @ Liv Lives Life
Yep, that’s pretty much an exact list of my favorite snacks, too! Except switch the almond butter for sunbutter. 🙂
I actually really like the idea of this post – I might have to steal it sometime!
Alyssa @ Road to RD
Will you come prepare little snack-meals for me? So simple sounding, yet so amazing looking!
kristen @ verbs and vignettes
ooo, fun.
the last thing you snacked on: cookie cake for a coworkers birthday.
3 things you end up snacking on most: ice cream {whenever it is in the apartment}, beets {crazy, i know. but with a dollop of greek yogurt, they are awesome!}, whatever nut butter is open in the pantry {currently natural almond butter, biscoff crunchy, and white chocolate wonderful pb}.
lunch is overrated, true or false: uhhh, false. lunch during the workday is usually my favorite. and it’s often my biggest meal, if i go out with e.p. somewhere.
happy wiaw!
Sophia
Do you snacker, do you Amanda 😉 I’m in awe of that cereal and snack collection! Last thing I “snacked” on was a bit more of the “supper” Lucas and I cooked for my family- nigella lawsons caramel croissant pudding! It was amazing- my papa isn’t feeling great and has very little appetite- we thought something as delcious as this would help so (just as Nigella suggests) we made it for dinner. Try it if ever you get time- seriously it’s food to live for 🙂 Three things I snack on most- changes often- three favourites are- gelato, farinata, or something delicious from the bakery. Come to Europe- lunch is celebrated and delicous- when it can be of course! Do you snacker 🙂 xo Sophia
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Awww it just melts my heart to hear that you and Lucas are cooking together for your family… So sweet <3 And be careful or I might just take you up on that offer to come visit Europe. The food and atmosphere there is just amazing.
Sophia
You would be most welcome! Lucas and I would love to meet you (we can make you pudding lol)
Jo @ Living Mint Green
yogurt mess! yogurt mess!
I thought of you while I made a “blackforest” yogurt bowl the other day – 2%, frozen cherries, cacao nibs, cinnamon.
I’ve been snacking all day long too – it’s been super random. The last thing I ate was scrambled eggs & feta. I’m all about salt lately!
Katie @ KatieEnPursuit
100% to ALL of the options above! I just finished a yogurt bowl with berries, PB, & muesli! The top 3 snack things would be fruit, yogurt & carrots! I think snacks are more “fun” & have less boundaries than typical meals…at least that’s my backwards reasoning for throwing more random stuff together than I can usually handle. Happy Wednesday lady!
Kate
Mmmm snacking. So good! Although I’m actually quite the opposite when it comes to lunch – that’s my biggest meal of the day! I used to eat smaller-ish lunches but then I’d get hungry 20 minutes after and got sick of constantly snacking (especially when I was at work from 9am-7pm and only packed so many snacks LOL) so I just started beefing up my lunches a lot. I guess when I’m so active during the day that’s what I need! But afternoon and evening snacks are definitely still a feature – I’m all on board the yogurt/almond butter train, I like to mix those together for some creamy deliciousness….and oh yeah fruit. Far more fruits than veggies in these parts haha :-D. I’m actually eating a snack as I type this – kombucha, some mini-pretzels, and a big bowl of cherries!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I may have to consider doing the same. I think my biggest problem with lunch is that I don’t exactly get a designated lunchtime, so I usually have to eat it on the go and snacks make that way easier. It’s definitely a little annoying to get hungry every hour though 😡
Lucie@FitSwissChick
Oh this makes me so hungry!! Last snack: Chia Coconut bar. Favorite snacks: eggs, chicke amd chocolate 🙂
Jenn L @ Peas and Crayons
You have no idea how much I love you — and this post! Keep the inspiration coming lady! I’m totally featuring your WIAW on next weeks party post! xoxo
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Totally gushing over here <3
Lauren
I’m definitely a fruit snacker or I’ll just take spoonfuls (read: finger swipes) of nut butter when I get hungry. I’ve become a big fan of Quest Bars (Cookie Dough), so those make an appearance if I want to spend the money on them. I love a good latte as a “snack”, too, every now and then. Lunches ARE overrated. Worst meal of the day. Boo. Hiss.
nicole
i love your sweet tooth 🙂 i love your term “yogurt messes” — such a great way to incorporate the flavors and textures of various cravings! honestly, sometimes i’ll eat a light lunch just so i can be hungry for snacks… mmmm 🙂
Lisa C.
I’m a snacker too. I don’t like the feeling of a heavy meal. Therefore, my days consist of 3 meals, 3 snacks (at least). Not a day goes by without chocolate, either!
Christina @ the athletarian
Do I spy Cinnamon Toast Crunch?! Last week I ate an entire box in less than 24 hours. I have a legitimate problem.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I would say that we could start a support group, but… I’m not quite ready to get rid of my habit 😉
Katie @ running4cupcakes
oh my goodness we are like snacking twins! You have all of my favorites on that list. I was like yup, yup, yup, yup and yup! 😉 Dramatic re-enactment!! Damn, now I’m hungry!
Sarah
Absolutely no issue with being a snacker primarily, if it works for you power to ya 🙂 All about the fruit, almond butter, chocolate, and cheese strings. All great snackage, all so darn tasty. Lunch is completely overrated. Something like breakfast, snacks on snacks on snacks, dinner, snack(s?) sounds much better!
