So it’s been about a week (okay, 5 days) since I told you guys that I was going to be experimenting with my diet a little bit, and while I would have loved to use today’s WIAW to give you an update on how it’s going, I have to be honest and tell you that… it’s not.Β But hear me out!
These past few days have just been wacky. Even though I’ve more-or-less managed to avoid succumbing to the full-blown plague that seems to be sweeping the nation, I’ve still been battling minor symptoms of it, which unfortunately means that my stomach has been feeling less than ideal – think sporadic bouts of discomfort and nausea. Or actually, don’t think about that… no one likes thoughts like those.
In any case, bulked up mealsΒ haven’t sounded appealing to me in the least, and because food seems to settle my stomach somewhat, I’ve been snacking like a fiend in an effort to keep any nausea at bay. Not that I’m complaining – you guys know I love my snacking π So, this’ll be another typical 8-snack-a-day WIAW. Hopefully I’ll have some updates for you guys next week (damn bug). But for now, let’s see what we’ve got…
As per usual, the day starts with breakfast…
Plain Greek yogurt – banana – nectarine – Kashi Cinnamon Harvest – Puffins – roasted almond butter.
Continues with lunchΒ [breakfast]…
Cookie Dough Smoothie:
- Β½ banana
- ΒΌ cup oatmeal
- 1 tsp. ground flax
- Β½ scoop vanilla protein powder
- Β½ tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. vanilla flavor
- 1 Tbsp. almond butter
- 1 cup milk
And apparently ends with dinnerΒ [breakfast]…
Buckwheat groats cooked in 2% milk and cinnamon – warmed apple – raisins – roasted almond butter.
What can I say? When my stomach feels off, all I want are carbs and fruits – the thought of veggies and savory meals just makes my stomach turn. To my credit, though, IΒ did manage to get a least a couple servings of veggies in by snacking on some carrots throughout the day…
Go me! Buuuuut then I have to go on and admit that the rest of the time I was snacking on things like this…
Plain Greek yogurt mixed with coconut milk – the rest of the banana – blueberries – slivered almonds.
Annie’s Bunny Grahams.
Watermelon.
Starbucks Cappuccino.
Now, this isn’t necessarily representative of the way I eatΒ everyΒ day, but on the days where my stomach doesn’t feel the best? It’s all about the carbs, fruits, and yogurts. Did I mention the carbs?
Plain toast.
Dry Kashi Cinnamon Harvest.
I swear, there’s nothing like dry cereal (or bread) to settle a wonky stomach.Β If I had saltines, I probably would have resorted to those, but alas… saltines are a rarity around these parts, while the cereal is ever-flowing. Thankfully, things are looking pretty good on the stomach-front so far, so hopefully I’ll be able to get back to eating more ‘normal’ foods today. Happy Wednesday!
. – . – . – .
What foods do you end up eating when your stomach is feeling off?
What’s your favorite cereal to eat dry?
Is anyone having breakfast for lunch/dinner today? Or have you recently?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Your night-time snacks are upwards of 1000 calories? I’ve always been open with my struggles and I’m actually feeling pretty darned good aside from this nagging bug, so I’m not really sure what gives you the idea that I’m not doing well? π―
Lucy
I don’t get it . You’re dinner “meal” is more like 1/2 of a night-time snack to me. And no, I don’t exercise. I just eat. Are you doing okay lately? These last few months lead me to think you struggle more than you say (not sure if blogging is a good or bad involved with that).
Irina @ Chocolatea Time
Haha I am all about the carbs when my stomach feels off. I typically turn to mush (i.e. oatmeal) and my stomach thanks me. My mom’s oatmeal is the best though – quick oats + whole milk + brown sugar = pure heaven! I hope you’re feeling better! Breakfast for any meal is always a favorite π
kris
I’m glad you’re feeling a bit better! Being sick is no fun π
That was still a deeelicious day of breakfasty eats though. Especially that cookie dough smoothie! uh YUM. My favorite dry cereal is probably honey nut cheerios. Soo addictive!
Jun
Breakfasts for lunch rarely happens, but breakfasts for dinners – yes, more than I could handle sometimes!
I loveeee breakfast meals… but I tend to go overboard on it easily when I have it for dinner. Still, I’m getting much better at intuitive eating and emotional eating is slowly dying away. Nothing makes me happier than realizing that after such a long period of time, the road to recovery IS possible. Reading your blog definitely helps, too! π
When I’m feeling uneasy, I roll with carbohydrates, say oats, bread, though most of the time fresh fruits, of course!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Eeee! That’s so amazing to hear that you’ve been making some positive strides in recovery! It IS possible, and it only gets better π
Alexandra
Breakfast is EPIC any time of day!! Love it! π
Oh man I just had to comment to say that smoothie sounds epic–goodness I wish I could tolerate oats, I’d make this in a heartbeat!!!!
Hope you’ve been well my friend, I can’t wait to catch up on your posts this weekend!
Sara @my less serious life
do i spy another smoothie? this one peaks my interest – cookie dough – does it really taste like it? feel better soon!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s what I imagine cookie dough would taste like π I don’t remember ever having the ‘real’ stuff because I’m kind of skeeved off by the idea of eating raw eggs, but the addition of oatmeal really makes it more doughy.
Laura Agar Wilson (@lauraagarwilson)
When my stomach is off I always find that salted chips or crisps work wonders! Anything fatty and salty tends to work for me. Now a day full of breakfast foods sounds pretty wonderful to me π
Gina @ Health, Love, and Chocolate
Just the title of the post pretty much sums up many of my days…or at least how I often wish they would go until I just really need some veggies in my life toward the end of the day. There’s always time for more cereal after dinner though! π
Jessie
I could eat breakfast for every.single.meal, but unfortunately I have a husband who I have to cook for come dinner time. I don’t think it’ be fair to make him eggs or pancakes every night.. darnit! Ha Ha
Favorite Cereal to eat dry: Either Barbara’s Original Puffins or Chex. To close to call
when stomach is off: Smoothies always work for me!!
Eating 4 Balance
I’m the same way. When my stomach isn’t feeling so good, carbs are my go-to. I love that you had breakfast all day. That cookie dough smoothie sounds perfect and delicious.
Out of all cereals, I’m not sure I could really pick one that I like to eat dry. Lucky charms, fruit loops, captain crunch, honey nut cheerios, frosted flakes, trix, honey bunches of oats. They are all so good! I think that corn pops is probably the best of ’em though for snacking.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Corn Pops were one of my favorite cereals growing up, and when it came to Lucky Charms, I’d just pick out the marshmallows π
Kate
OH i feel ya on the carbs. I’ve been um….incredibly sick the past week as well (though drug-induced rather than bug-induced) and at times all I could get down and all I wanted were pop chips and grapes. Super nutritious LOL but yeah….the thought of meat, veggies, etc makes my stomach turn when I feel that way. Breakfast for every meal? Why the heck not! I actually on the meds have been wanting more salty things (I think they make me dehydrated) so today I actually ate dinner for breakfast – leftover curry chicken with kale and sweet potatoes and grapes lol. WHatever works! And I hope you feel better soon so you can implement that new experiment!!
Shelly
I just got over stomach flu, and I never get sick. All I wanted for 3 days was yogurt and sweets (if anything). One dinner was a Stonyfield toddler yogurt – banana + pumpkin (yes!) and a Kashi dark chocolate oatmeal cookie.
Missy
It totes depends on what kind of “off” my tummy is up to but I know that virus you have … my whole fam has it and for me? I just want animal protein (fish for me) and bland carbs and soup.
Yes, I get how the thought of veggies? Tastes like HURT.
Brooke
I am just finally getting over the flu, and I craved carbs and sweeter foods for sure. I wasn’t nauseous, but I didn’t have an appetite. Lots of oatmeal, pancakes, and granola plus bananas and clementines. I snuck in a little greens by making myself smoothies with kale, clementines, and bananas which I sweetened with stevia or honey and cinnamon! I’m still not really feeling savory foods yet, and I actually just packed myself oatmeal with a banana, chocolate protein powder, and sunbutter for lunch at work tomorrow! Oh, and I have also been wanting fried eggs. Ever since I was sick when pregnant with my daughter, I crave those when I’m sick. At least it’s some variety!
And I have ALWAYS loved dry cereal at any time of day! My favorite when I was younger was Cinnamon Toast Crunch! Now it’s Erewhorn Buckwheat and Hemp, Puffins, or Nature’s Path Gorilla Munch. Yum!!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
A cookie dough smoothie?? Sign me up!! π That sounds awesome.
Those carrots are making me hungry. I am obsessed with carrots and hummus. Each week I go through a 2 lb bag of them (sometimes in less than a week). They are definitely one of my favorite vegetables.
Lastly, isn’t plain toast delicious? I love coming up with creative toppings, but sometimes just keeping it simple is the way to go.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Plain toast is definitely delicious, and I swear that I crave it more for the dry and crispy texture than anything else.
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl
Ditto. Glad to hear that I am not the only one!
Karey @ Nutty About Health
Hope the stomach settles down soon. Your eats look delicious & I can definitely understand a carb craving type of day when you’re feeling a bit off. They provide energy & they’re comforting… & tasty. My favorite cereal to eat dry was always the Kashi GoLean Cinnamon Crisp. Yum!! Addicting. I had breakfast for dinner yesterday… it was great! Love me some brinner. π
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables
when my tummy is feeling off, I crave exactly what you were eating! I want you teach me how you do your buckwheat groats!!
Andrea @Pencils and Pancakes
Definitely crave low key things like cereal and bread when I don’t feel good. I know exactly what you mean when you say that eating ‘settles’ your stomach. I had the exact same kind of thing happen to me!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin
Aww I’m so sorry you’ve caught this thing that’s going around. Everyone I know from London, ON to the USA to Western Canada to England seems to have it! π
When my stomach is off I’m all about the carbs too – my diet is pretty much oatmeal, toast, pasta and soup!
Favourite cereal to eat dry? Any kind of granola!
And I’m with you on loving breakfast. It’s seriously the best meal of the day. I haven’t had breakfast for dinner in a while, but I was actually planning on having it tomorrow night. I’m already excited haha. π
Feel better soon girl!
Hollie
Honestly-I find that to be no big deal. Being diabetic, there are oh so plenty of times my stomach is saying no. I normally tend towards the blander food and anything without flavor. (doesn’t that sound good?).
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Right now? It actually does π
Sunnie@moderngirlnutrition
Haha I have days like this too! Your smoothie looks ridiculously good:)
Nicole
Remember, your body needs good food when you’re sick!! π I’m actually the opposite when I’m sick — I barely ever lose my appetite…
And I think I mentioned this before, but I’ve never ever had breakfast for lunch or dinner. It’s just…. weird for me, lol. Dinner has always been a nice, hot, comforting meal with veggies, starches, and usually some kind of protein. It just wouldn’t feel right if I had something else. I’d feel like I was having a snack if I had breakfast for dinner!
…Which I know has been a topic on your blog lately. When I see tiny meals (snacks, really), for me they signal maybe a hidden attempt to restrict in the slightest. It comes from experience: I remember a phase in my recovery where I was almost weight restored, but thought “Ehhh… I don’t want to gain anymore. This is ridiculous, I’m fine! I don’t need that much food…” -100 cals here, 100 cals there, and I actually thought that just because I was eating more than I had when I was very sick, I thought everything was fine. It took bouts with overeating, uncomfortable feelings, confusion around food and all that other stuff that only seems to plague us π to make me realize that trying to fudge caloric needs does NOT work and the fact that I was still obsessing about food all the time was a big hint, too.
I’m not fully recovered because I still sometimes have a hard time accepting the amount of food I’m capable of eating. I eat it, but I think being uncomfortable is a sign I’m obviously not 100% there yet. (Sorry for the tangent, but I had to explain my thoughts a bit!) π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
No breakfast for dinner? Sad face! But that just goes to show you how different everyone’s situation is. Breakfast for dinner has been a normal thing for me for about as long as I can remember. I was such a picky eater when I was little, that my mom would end up making me pancakes, oatmeal, crepes, and cereal for dinner a lot of the time just to get me to eat. When I was deep in my disorder, I was actually afraid of having breakfast for dinner too often – thinking that lunch/dinner had to have veggies and be savory. So, the fact that I’m able to eat breakfast this much is actually a really good thing in my case π
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day π
