Step 1: Buy chocolate cake mix. Prepare according to package instructions.
Step 2: Beat whipped cream into oblivion. Resist urge to stick fingers in bowl while mixer is moving.
Step 3: When cake has cooled, slather first layer with generous amounts of cherry pie filling and whipped cream. Top with second layer. Proceed to slather entire cake with whipped cream. Lick fingers and spatula.
Step 4: Grate chocolate. Do not grate knuckles.
Step 5: Sprinkle grated chocolate over top and sides of cake. “Clean up” extra chocolate.
Step 6: Adorn cake with candles. 21 is always a good number.
Step 7: Sing Happy Birthday (optional: in Polish).
Step 8:ย After flames have been extinguished and wishes have been made, slice in to cake. Resist temptation to give yourself the first piece.
Step 9: Slice a well-deserved piece for yourself.
Step 10: Enjoy every.single.bite.

Fruit in cake: yay or nay?
True or False: whipped cream beats frosting?
Existence of dessert stomach: fact or fiction?

Fruit in cake: OH YES!! This looks awesome! I would probably try it with strawberry pie filling since I’m not a huge fan of cherries. I do love a good frosting but fresh whipped cream is refreshing!
dessert stomach: totally worth it ๐
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli
My mom made that SAME kind of cake around Christmas only it was a white cake and she totally when the lazy route and used Cool Whip! Lol I’m not much of a cherry (pie filling) fan so I passed, but everyone seemed to really like it! I DO 100% approve of fruit in cake…actually that’s pretty much the only kind of cake I like…pineapple upside down cake, strawberry cake (with REAL strawberries), hmm, I think you should make me a blueberry cake! Yes…please…thank you! ๐
Whipped cream kicks frosting’s A$$!!
Dessert stomach: most definitely TRUE!!

I need this cake in my life. That is all I have to say.
Happy (belated) papa spoons!! Hope he had the best day ever!
And yes to a dessert stomach…I actually think I have two.

That combo (but with white cake over chocolate) is what my dad always has on his birthday! I can tolerate fruit in my cake sometimes, but usually prefer it without ๐

Happy birthday to your dad!!!
Fruit in cake is fine by me. My favourite cake used to be this raspberry chocolate truffle cake from this restaurant in town, until it closed down. ๐
I’m gonna have to go with real frosting over whipped cream though. My mom’s buttercream frosting is to die for. And her cream cheese frosting is even better!

I don’t think I will EVER turn down a cake!! My wedding cake had strawberries in the middle and it was pretty sticking good, so I think as long as the fake and frosting go well with the flavor of the fruit it is a YES!
Oh and happy bday to Papa Spoons!
Picky Nicky
yes everyone has a separate stomach for dessert ๐ I’ve proven this many times ๐ Thats cakes looks so yummy btw!

Existence of a dessert stomach: totally, unquestionably, FACT.
Read this post this morning and thought it was weird to put whipped cream on a cake instead of icing… Friend brought me over cupcakes for my birthday and low and behold, frosted with whipped cream – total convert now. Ah-mazing.
This is my first time commenting and just wanted to add – Love your blog by the way.

Cake from the box…divine! A must try ๐ You must show what box it was! Frosting is my #1 choice and a nice bite of strawberries in a cake is a MUST! Love + Shine CourtStar

i love birthdays & cake! Happy Birthday to Papa Spoons!!! ๐
Loving your addition of the fruit! – I bet the cherry pie filling + the homemade whipped cream + the chocolate cake made for a KILLER combo! Homemade whipped cream takes out regular whipped cream any day.
I’m typically not much of a whipped cream person, but I do have a soft spot for the homemade kind. I think cream cheese frosting is my favorite. I will choose any kind of cake laced with that stuff. Actually I take that back…cream cheese frosting made with whipped cream is actually AMAZING. It creates this super light yet cream cheese-y tasting frosting. So I guess it’s both true AND false? haha

!! I’ve never tried a whipped cream/cream cheese frosting. I remember coming across a recipe somewhere, though, so I think I’m going to have to give it a shot. Sounds amazing!

As I child I HATED fruit in cake, but now I just love it! Must be the Grandma in me coming out! To be honest, because I’ve struggled with an ED since I was 8, I haven’t eaten that many cakes in my life. I could probably count how many I’ve had on 1 hand! Even though I’m recovered now, I still turn towards things like cookies or chocolate if I want a sweet treat. However, I could imagine that I’d prefer whipped cream on a cake more than frosting. And as I found out on a recent trip to the UK, dessert stomach SO exists! Happy birthday to Papa Spoons!

Happy birthday to Poppa Spoons! Between your mom’s birthday muffin (cupcakes?) and this beauty of a cake, it’s too bad birthdays only come around once a year ;)! I love the combo of fruits in cake and along with cherries & dark chocolate, I love the combo of strawberries, peaches or blueberries with white chocolate..or cream ;)! And errr I thought everyone had a dessert stomach..I definitely do! I went for brunch yesterday with a few friends and despite proclaiming how full our orders left us, nothing stopped us from ordering (and inhaling) cookies with ice cream!
