Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!
1. Before we get on to the rest of the randomness, you NEED to take three minutes out of your day to watch this Sad Cat Diary video. I don’t even have a cat and I hit “laughing so hard you cry” status pretty darn quick. It’s perfect. Go watch!
[youtube=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKffm2uI4dk&w=640&h=427″]
2. Speaking of cats, would you consider yourself a cat person or a dog person? I used to be a die-hard dog person when I was younger, but the older I get, the more and more of a cat person I feel like I’m becoming. That being said, I’ll probably never actually be able to own a cat since I’m crazy allergic to them, but I have the impression that they’re a lot less work than dogs, which is super appealing at this point in life. That being said x2, I don’t know if I’ll ever want another pet in general. My dog is 14 now, and it completely crushes me whenever something is off with her or whenever I think of her her dying. I lost my last dog 9 years ago, and I still can’t look at dogs that look like her without getting emotional. Maybe I need to buy a turtle or something… don’t some of those live to be 100?
3. Also old? My laptop… or at least that’s what I’m guessing is the cause of the battery dying so quickly. Doesn’t it last something like 3 hours out of the box? Mine just hit 4 years not too long ago, and it’s averaging about 1.5 and running kind of hot… but then it runs perfectly fine outside of that and isn’t slow or glitchy. Maybe its time for a new battery?
Edited to add: I actually restarted my laptop (since I never turn it off), and the battery seems back to normal. Veeeeeery curious 🤔
4. In happier news! This weekend is Thanksgiving for us up here in Canadaland, and… okay maybe it’s not super happier news since Canadian Thanksgiving just seems so underwhelming compared to American Thanksgiving. Ya know? It kind of shows up out of nowhere and no one really knows whether to celebrate it on Sunday or Monday or even at all. We always do, but because my family is European and Thanksgiving isn’t really a thing over in the homeland, my parents adopted this custom Thanksgiving dinner that never included things like stuffing, sweet potato casseroles, or pumpkin pie, and in recent years hasn’t even included turkey since no one likes to eat it 😂 But as long as there’s dessert, I’m a happy camper. I’m thinking of making some kind of variation of these bars.
5. Also Happy Camper inducing? New books!
I picked up the latest book in the Throne of Glass series last week, buuuuut I haven’t been able to start reading it because I’m sill trying to finish the book that I’m currently working on. Oi. It’s not even that it’s a horrible book… it’s just that what started out as an intriguing story lost all of its momentum and has just dragged on for waaaaay too long. That and the characters that I used to love just annoy the crap out of me now.
6. BUT! I’m determined to finish it, regardless. #1 because I’m way too invested at this point, and #2 because I don’t want to add to my list of unfinished books. There’s only ever been one book that I haven’t been able to finish, and that was Robinson Crusoe way back in university. I had to read it for one of my English classes, and… I just couldn’t get through it.
7. Something I have no problem getting through is that “cheesy” sauce that I posted last week. I haven’t always been eating it as mac and cheese, but I’ve lost count of what batch I’m on at this point because there’s literally always a jar of it in my fridge. Ob.sessed.
8. And that’s it for me today, friendly faces! I hope you’re having an awesome Thursday, and I’ll talk to you soon!
Let’s chat!

Arman @ thebigmansworld
I need book recommendations- I was looking through my old bookcase and have a ton of non-fiction books which are so eerie- Google ‘wild swans’.
Also those cats…I wonder if I can face swap it with Donald Trump.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Wild swans? Tempted. I still haven’t looked into that Italian thing…
Liza
Oh, my God, this was such a hilarious and at the same time lyrical post! I LOVE cats! But this dog looks SO smart, when you look at her it seems that she knows IT ALL!
And those Pumpkin Bars look REALLY yummy, too!
Thanks for the post!!!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks Liza! I’d tell Ky you said that, but then it’d probably get to her head 😉
Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health
I love seeing pictures of Kyah!! She’s so freaking cute. 🙂
I’m also more of a dog person but I agree that they are a ton of work. Plus the whole short life span thing royally sucks. Coco has been having some health problems lately (she’s going on 14 which is upper end for her breed) and it’s like she’s a completely different dog now. It’s so hard watching them grow old!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It really is 😕 Sometimes I forget that Ky is that old since she doesn’t really look it, but I’ll notice that she sleeps more and tires out a lot faster, and then it’s like… oh 🙁 And forget it if she starts acting off – I lose my mind.
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
Cat person all the way because they’re less work….and then somehow I ended up with a kid.:)
I love the Dear Diary cat series. It’s pretty much on point for Sam.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
But not for Oscar? I’m surprised they said nothing about the “presents” that cats bring to your doorstep.
shashi at runninsrilankan
Hahaha – that Cat Diary video is hilarious!!! There was one period in time, when for 4 consecutive services at the church I attend, they broke the congregation into cat people and dog people and showed videos to support/derail both groups – it was a hilarious 4 Sundays! I am a die-hard dog person – and one of mine is 11 and the vet sent me a letter to schedule her “senior” check-up and am in denial! Every time I see your dog, I cannot help but think wow – what a gorgeous specimen! And heck yeah – turtles like for ever – just read a blog post about them this morning! Now I’ve gotta check out your vegan sauce and ooh those bars! Happy Thanksgiving Amanda – hope your weekend is awesome!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Vets need to ease up on the senior talk. Omg! I took my pup in to get her shots a few years back, and the vet is like: “this might be the last time we see her.” Why would you say something like that!?
Chelsea's Healthy Kitchen
I’m totally a dog person! I really want to adopt one but I want to wait until I possibly start private practice so that we’re not always leaving our dog along for 8 hours a day while we’re at work.
Hope you have a great non-Thanksgivingy Thanksgiving! 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’ve been going back and forth on getting a dog for YEARS, and I think the main reason I don’t get one now is because I adore big dogs, and my place only allows smaller ones. Maybe one day when I move.
lucie
Dog AND cat person over here! I love cats because they are more independent and don’t need so much care and tim – on the other hand, going out with a dog, running and playing is pretty awesome too. Anyhow – I am not a pet person in general, being on the run almost constantly…..
I have never celebrated Thanksgiving before. Maybe I should het over to join in yours?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I think you most definitely should! And you’re totally right about dogs vs. cats – both are great for different reasons.
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves
I can’t believe it’s Canadian Thanksgiving already! True about thanksgiving really being about the carbs and desserts 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
!! Are you still going to be able to celebrate while you’re in Ireland??
Babydoll Brea
I laughed so hard at that video and the immediately emailed the link to my mom’s husband…because my mom doesn’t have a damned smart phone and can’t even be bothered to check her own email. She needs to come up to speed a little faster.
Your comment about aging pets and considering changing to #teamcat hit me hard. January will be the 4th anniversary of the loss of my Queensland heeler, and I recently saw a dog — who I got to pet and love up –that looked so much like her in appearance and behavior that I was wrecked for most of the week.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m sorry, Brea 🙁 I can totally relate. 9 years and I’m only just getting to the point where I don’t get overly emotional seeing her breed. Also, heelers are on my list of favourite breeds 🙂
Jo @ Living Mint Green
I want to cannonball into your blender of cheez sauce! It looks so creamy and velvety. Yum.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Just make sure to jump in with your mouth wide open 😉
Jolene
I don’t like turkey either and neither do my kids, so last year we went out for a fancy meal and they loved it. Some years we just grill out on Thanksgiving and everyone’s happy! It’s all about being thankful and being together anyways!:) The bar looks so yummy! Heather Runs Fast sent me over here! Loving this Think Out Loud!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks for stopping by and saying hi, Jolene! Family is my favourite part about Thanksgiving as well. We weren’t even able to have dinner last year since it was the day my parents were moving into their new place, but we were all together so it was totally fine.
Jennie Liedkie
My cure for aging pets ? More of them at the same time !
I have had multiple generations of Newfoundland and I found that each one teaches the next one the same games, the same responses…… so you can see bits of the older dogs peeking through.
My indestructible ball is on its 6th generation of dog gamers…,.
I find the same with cats….. we only have three generations of cats, but the hidey-holes are all carried down…
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
You have Newfies?!? I love big fluffy dogs like that. We had a Bernese Mountain Dog, and she was seriously the best dog I’ve ever had.
Megan
HAHA love the sad cat video! I’ve seen it a few times and it never fails to make me laugh. 🙂
I’m a total dog person for sure. I’ve tried to like cats but they never seem to like ME so I gave up. I have a little baby pug and he’s full of life. But you are right cats are a lot less work!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Pugs are seriously the most adorable things ever. Is yours black or fawn?
Ange // Cowgirl Runs
I’m a crazy cat lady and I totally wear it with pride.
I do like dogs, but my lifestyle is much better suited for a cat.
After Merlin’s sickness and surgery this summer, I can’t even begin to think about something else happening to him.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’d be a crazy cat lady if I had a cat like Merlin too 🙂 He’s definitely a cutie!
Alaina @ thesimplepeach
I think I’m more an animal person in general, but I’m more of a dog person than a cat person. I want to dive into that sauce. That is all 😀
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Honestly? I really like them both as well. Each one is great for different things 🙂
Ellen @ My Uncommon Everyday
Happy Thanksgiving! I’m a dog person, but mostly because my mom is allergic to cats. If it’s a cute animal, I’m good, honestly, but I think dogs are worth the work. If a cat were that much work, I probably wouldn’t love that.
I don’t force myself to finish books anymore. There’s too much I want to read and do to bother if I’m not loving it, since I’m theoretically doing it for pleasure. I always forget that Robinson Crusoe is more than a stupid econ problem that you hear about for the whole core of the econ major. I don’t think I could read the book just because it’d bring back bad memories 😛
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
“If it’s a cute animal, I’m good” <-- definitely can't argue with that 🙂 And RC is in econ too? Omg I don't think I could handle that... although I'm tempted to Google it.
Lindsey @livinglovingrunner
I am totally going to make that cheesy recipe! I am always craving cheesy things…and my tummy TOTALLY hates me for it later…no good! Thanksgiving is a great time of the year for thankfulness and food…I still haven’t QUITE figured out the food part yet, but it will be a good one!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That’s why I had to come up with an alternative too! Dairy really triggers my eczema, so I do my best to avoid it as much as I can.
Emily Swanson
How is that sauce so cheesy looking? I need to check that out.
And I am totally like you; I used to be a 100% dog person, then we got our own cats. We cuddled them a lot, and they have actually all been really sweet.
I love Thanksgiving; it’s such a reminder of all the blessings with which we have been showered. I hope your thanksgiving is full of yummy food, family time, and good fellowship!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thanks so much, Emily! And I was -totally- surprised about the sauce too. I went into it super skeptical and it took me a little while to wrap my head around the fact that sweet potatoes could taste cheesy.
Jess @ Keeping It Real Food
Happy Thanksgiving! That cheesy sauce looks awesome, by the way. I hear you about feeling sad about an animal passing away. I can’t believe how crazy-attached I am to my dog. Sometimes I think I’d be more of a cat person if I weren’t allergic, but then my social media presence would probably be, like, all food and cats. Haha okay, so maybe not so different from food and dogs…
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I don’t think anyone would complain about that! I have a feeling people love food and animals 😉
grace
i love dogs and i spy an ADORABLE one on this post! what kind is yours (assuming that’s a picture of her…)?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It is 🙂 We’re not entirely sure what she is since we got her as a rescue and they had no idea. Definitely some sort of husky or elkhound, and probably a bit of border collie. She was in a litter of 5 pups, and 3 of them were black and white like collies, while her and 1 other looked more husky-ish.
grace
well, she’s positively precious! 🙂
Heather @ Polyglot Jot
I HAVE to finish a book–even if I hate it I force myself to read it. I hate not finishing a book for some reason!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I’m exactly the same way! RC was just a little too hard to read though.
Kat
Let’s just live in a fantasy world where our dogs live as long as we do, mkay? 😉
Happy Thanksgiving!! I’m not s huge fan of Thanksgiving Day foods, but OMG my husband is obsessed. It is literally his favorite meal in the entire world. He actually has a countdown for Thanksgiving Day and I’m just like, “will there be cake?” 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Yes exactly! Dinner only gets in the way of dessert 😉
Catherine @ A Cup of Catherine
Happy Thanksgiving!
I am 100% a dog person. Cats are ok (like I don’t wish harm upon them, lol) but I will never own one. I feel like dogs are friendlier! 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That was what I always thought when I was younger! But then I met some really sweet cats 😆
Morgan @ Morgan Manages Mommyhood
I never ever in my life thought I would have a cat, but mine is now 5 years old. I can confidently say that I am definitely a DOG person. Yes, cats are a million times easier (though we have a decent sized fenced in yard which makes dog owning pretty simple) but she’s a total bitch and not a fun, cuddly cat. So yes, my dog is obnoxious and clingy and needy, but my cat literally hunts me so there’s that.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Lol! See that was always my impression of cats when I was younger – that they have an evil streak to them. But then I met so many sweet cats, so now you’ve just gone and confused me.
Montana Ross
That sad cat diary is hilarious! I love cat videos like this. I’m totally a cat person because of what you mentioned…far less work. I don’t like things that need lots of attention haha.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The other day I probably spent about an hour watching crazy cat videos. My abs definitely got a good workout from laughing so much 😉
Cora
I’ve learned that turning your laptop completely OFF – and not just shutting down the top – is super super super important. Never turning it off can really hurt it – as I’ve learned from experience. I try to tell my mother this but she never listens. Happy almost Thanksgiving! Hope you get in some form of traditional something or other..
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Really?! I used to shut mine off every night, but then I got lazy a couple of months back and stopped. I think I’m going to start doing it again.
Rachel @ athleticavocado
I would say that my perception of cats and dogs changes every day depending on how good my pets are being but I love both cats and dogs! Also that cheese sauce looks so good I think I would eat that by the spoonful 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
LoL! That’s definitely fair. I think there are great things about both of them.
Julie @ Running in a Skirt
I’m def a dog person… I have my 15 year old Rhett and we just got a puppy! AHHH!! Losing them is insanely hard though.
Still LOVE that cheese sauce.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Omg puppies are the best. I can’t even remember what it’s like to have one anymore!
Rachel
Really though, turkey is kind of gross. Kudos to your family for not making it! That vegan mac & cheese is going on the meal list for next week!! Yuuuum.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
We used to every year until we realized that we just ended up having WAY too many leftovers that no one wanted to eat. I hope you like the cheeeeeese, Rachel!
Rachel
I had my first dog for 19 years. I got him when I was 5. I was crushed when he passed. My current dog is 14… I love her and will be so sad when it’s her time to go.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I definitely understand that, Rachel. But at least those years were so much better than they would have been without them 🙂
Patricia @Sweet and Strong
I am definitely a dog person, when I was younger my aunts cats used to hiss at me and it always freaked me out. So It’s embarrassing but I’m a little scared of cats. But yes it’s hard you get so attached, I like the turtle idea 😉 And Happy Thanksgiving. In the US it’s one o my favorite holidays because we usually have a bunch of friends over and all cook together and sit around and drink wine and watch football. Perfect kinda of day for me.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That definitely sounds perfect and very much what I wish ours looked like. Just a tad bit jealous 😛
Hollie
It’s an easy choice for me as I’m not a dog person at all. I do love cats though! Hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Thank you Hollie!
Chocolaterunsjudy
Happy thanksgiving! It kind of makes more sense to me to have it when leaves are still on the trees — a turkey trot would be so pretty right now!
I’m an animal person. I’m not sure I’ll be able to get a new cat when Gizmo us gone, because of Bandit, and it will break my heart. I’ve always had cats. They are far less work, but that’s not why, I simply love cats (and thankfully neither of us is allergic).
I love dogs, too. I can’t imagine my life without them, either. Yes, it is heartbreaking when they leave, but sometimes a new animal can help heal your heart. Except Bandit, although I must say he keeps me busy enough (and my parents) that I think about Chester less (although in some ways he also reminds me of Chester).
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Cats are wonderfully relaxing to have around – that’s another thing I love about them. And you’re definitely an amazing animal person, Judy. Bandit is lucky to have you!
michele @ paleorunningmomma
The sad cat video really did have me laughing since I do have a cat and it’s spot on. And I thought some of those were just my cat! With 3 kids and no extra energy for me I know this will wind up being our last pet (he’s 14) even though so many people around us are getting dogs. And I still need to make that cheese sauce! I’m procrastinating 😉
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I can’t believe your kids aren’t bugging you for a dog! I bugged mine forrrr… 5 years before I got one 😆
Alicia @Bridges Through Life
I am definitely a cat person, though since living alone and without pets, I have had less nose problems, so I don’t know if that was because of having two cats at home or just all the dust…I plan to get a cat when I am more settled in one place and have hardware floors. I hate cleaning carpets!
Enjoy your Thanksgiving. I can’t believe how fast our Thanksgiving is coming up too! I don’t particularly like most traditional Thanksgiving food, except the Turkey, I do like, but I have never been a stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry fan. In the last couple years, my family makes the traditional stuff plus a few other different side dishes that I like more which is nice so that I don’t have just a plate of turkey and corn. haha.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
My nose problems cleared up when I moved away from home too 😕 I’m definitely allergic to cats, and I think to dogs to a lesser extent. But I put up with that one because I adore them.
meredith @ cookie chrunicles
I will never be a cat person. since my dog died years ago, I also became not a dog person. I just can’t get over it and don’t want to replace her. my son really wants a dog though! it’s exciting that you have thanksgiving now. it’s also not fair that it’s not as big as our thanksgiving. I honestly didn’t even know you had a thanksgiving in Canada until you told me a few years ago.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Haha! Yeah it literally comes and goes and no one really makes a fuss about it. I think it’s more of an American thing anyways… we just picked it up as an excuse to eat more 😉
Michelle
I thought I was a dog person because we always had dogs when I was growing up. Then I adopted a kitten and I realized how much I love cats! We actually just adopted a second cat this week and now I’m even more of a recluse than ever. I just want to be at home with my cats!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That’s adorable! And totally how it was for me growing up too. We always had dogs, and it wasn’t until I started hanging out with people who had cats that I realized how much I actually like them.
Sam @ See Sam Run
Your cheesy sauce looks interesting, and way healthier than the cheese I love to eat. I’m definitely more of a cat person and can’t wait until I can get one myself. My roommate’s allergic so I’m not getting one until I move!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
It’s surprisingly cheesy! I mostly have to avoid dairy because it causes my eczema to flare, so this kind of stuff is a great alternative 🙂
Katie
My big thing this year has been audio books because I can listen to them on the way to work. It’s been great and helped me get more reading done, because every time I start a physical book, I just can’t get myself to make time to read it as much as I want to. I always think I will before bed and then I get hooked in a show, writing or other project and go to bed exhausted at the time I want to go to bed. The struggle…
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I love reading before bed because otherwise I have a hard time falling asleep, but I actually wouldn’t mind getting into audio books for when I’m driving or doing things around the house!
