Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday! No idea what I’m going on about? Click here!
1. So I didn’t get a chance to properly say this yet since I was away, but… Happy September! π Aside from Christmas, this is probably my favourite time of the year. Not only because it’s always felt like a fresh start thanks to the new school year and all, but because we’re sloooooowly making the transition into fall, which means that I can start assaulting your lovely faces with all things pumpkin, apple, maple, and cinnamon soon. Be on the lookout for those recipes starting next week, and start stocking up on canned pumpkin!
2. Speaking of recipes, it’s been a while since I posted one here on Spoons, but I’ve got one for ya over on Savory Style! Remember those muffins that I teased you with last week? They’re up today! And you’re going to love them if you’re a fan of bananas, chocolate, oats, and breakfast (who isn’t?!?) So head on over for some delicious Chocolate Chunk Banana Oat Muffin action.
3. As for me, I’ll be snacking on dates since I currently have a massive 2 lb. bag to eat my way through thanks to an impromptu grocery excursion in Whistler. Carting this bad boy around was definitely a bit of a pain in the butt, but the price was just too good to pass up. And, hello…. nature’s candy! I’ve been sticking them in the freezer, which makes them super chewy and caramelly.
4. Another thing too good to pass up [taking a picture of]? This sign that I came across by one of the lifts on Blackcomb Mountain. It makes the big softie in me smile…
5. What doesn’t make me smile is the fact that I think I might have to cut apples out of my diet for a while. I’ve always had a suspicion that apples were the culprit behind these strange red bumps that’ll show up around my mouth every now and again, but I loved them too much to really allow myself to become 100% convinced. After eating a few straight-from-the-tree BC apples on the ride home this weekend and having my lips and throat start itching like crazy not long after, I don’t think I can ignore it any longer — the same sort of random thing happened to me with pineapples a handful of years back. And what makes it even worse is that I brought a bag of those amazing apples home with me… Bugger!
6. Squirrel! Actually, chipmunk… but name that movie! π
7. Or how about… “Somewhereeee over the rainbow….”
Those are actually pretty much the only words to that song that I know π But I do know that looking at this [double] rainbow for about an hour made the long drive home a little less painful. I love road trips, but when you’ve been in the car for 12 hours, those last 1-2 hours take for.ev.er.
8. It’s also been forever (read: 17 weeks) since I’ve gotten a haircut, which is why I’m heading in to get one today. Woop, woop! I always have all these wild notions of doing something drastic and getting a pixie cut or a completely different colour, but then I somehow always end up chickening out and going for the same old, same old. One day… maybe.
9. Speaking of appointments… It’s sad that my dog is so much braver than I am when it comes to going in to the doctor to get her shots. Me? I basically have to drug myself unconscious with anti-anxiety meds. Kaiah? “No problem; I got this.” I used to be so much braver as a kid.
10. And on that note… here’s a little bit of #tbt action featuring yours truly as a Little Spoon…
Always and forever a goofball π Happy Thursday, friendly faces!
No questions… just tell me whatever comes to your mind! π

LOVE the rainbow π

You still look the same! Your hair is so shiny and pretty too.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Crazy, right?! That used to drive me -nuts- but I’ve learned to embrace the fact that I’ll probably always look like I’m around 12 years old π
Morganne @ NutButterRunner
Dates in the freezer!? You’re a genius. Squirrel! π
Whitney
Those chocolate chunk banana oat muffins look amazing! I was looking for a good recipe so I could make muffins to take camping this weekend and I just might have to use that one!
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets
Dammit I wish I had read this earlier because I would have totally urged you to get the pixie cut. 1. It would look adorable on you. 2. It’s just hair; it’ll grow back. 3. You should DO IT simply because I say so. Also, I would not be allowed on the mountain with my potty mouth.
My step sister developed an allergy later in life to specific fruits: pineapples, berries, etc. BUT, it only happens if the fruit touches her lips. So if she bites into an apple, it’s no Bueno. If she cuts it up and pops a piece into her mouth without touching her lips, it’s all good. Just a thought.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I already new you would have told me to go the pixie route — no further urging required π And I’m not sure what it touches makes a difference — will keep you updated.
Jess
Never thought to try putting dates in the freezerβdefinitely going to get on that! Thanks for the inspiration : )
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Healthy Kitchen
Do you have seasonal allergies? You might have oral allergy syndrome, which is when you react to proteins in fruits that have a similar structure to proteins in pollen, ragweed etc. Luckily most of the proteins are destroyed with cooking, so most people with OAS are fine with cooked fruit! π
Mmm a 2 lb bag of dates is definitely not a bad problem to have!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I kind of had a feeling that it might be OAS, but I don’t generally have trouble with seasonal allergies, so I’m not sure if that’s what it really is. Cooking does help, though!
natasha
Love me some apples…you can send them my way!
Seriously though it may be pesticide residue or something in the skin so try peeling them and see if that helps. Also baking/roasting might do the trick too. Bummer though!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
The ones I ate were actually peeled, so it can’t be that. And cooked ones -do- seem to bother me less, so if worst comes to worst, hopefully I’ll still have that!
Ann
You’re allergic to apples?? POOR YOU! π I’d die! Apples are the best part of fall!
That rainbow looks really beautiful! Double rainbows are even more pretty π
Sky @ Blonde Freedom
Aww that’s so inconvenient about the apples, but at least you found out what was causing the bumps! Ever since I got layers in junior high then decided to try emo during high school, I decided to just get a trim when I get a haircut. I’m trying to grow my hair out so my hair appointments are pretty boring. And I love your pictures of the barn and the hay field. Sooo pretty!
lindsay
so i’ve been on a baking kick ever since you posted your last muffin. Maybe it’s the mountain in colorado here that inspire me…nah.. ALL YOU! spoons.!. squirrel.!.. hehe
Elsie @ Sharing Healthiness
Hey girl if you ever need a friend to help you devour those yummy dates…I am here!!! π
I had that same reaction with apples but it eventually faded of! I started eating milder less acidic varieties and my reaction slowly disappeared.
I love the rainbow pic!
Laur
I am getting a haircut tomorrow, too! And I just went into a car ride with my mom saying I need to give myself a healthy hair cut; however, by the time we got back home I already talked myself out of it. π I tried! Lol
Maybe you’re allergic to just the apple skins??? I know a lot of people are just allergic to the skins and things on fruits. Do you get a reaction from your applesauce???
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I peeled the apple before I ate it π And I don’t get itchy from the applesauce, but I’m cutting it out too to see if it’s contributing to the rash. Boo-urns.
Kate B
Gosh! Your doggie!!!
Erin @ SnapbacksandRacingFlats
Oh applesβ¦ They used to be one of my favorite foods of all time.. And then one day, out of the blue I developed a severe allergy to them and now I can’t eat them without my throat closing and blacking out =(. Same with almondsβ¦
I’m snacking on dates over here as well! I have a huge bag of them in my desk π
And nice UP quote. Gotta love Disney =3.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Ack! Please tell me that it’s not going to happen to me with almonds as well! With a peanut allergy already under my belt, basically all nut butters would be off limits π₯
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat
Oh gosh, I can’t imagine not being able to eat apples, especially since my dad has an apple orchard and this time of year is prime time for apples! That totally stinks that you have a reaction to it!
Catherine @ foodiecology
Aww, man, that stinks about apples! I know what you mean about pineapple; I love it, but if I eat too much, my tongue sort of burns from the acid? I dunno…
Love that rainbow picture. I saw a big fat rainbow on the way home from work yesterday (couldn’t snap a picture as I was driving in 5:00 traffic!) but it made my afternoon.
And cute TBT picture. Happy Thursday!
(By the way, I’m not sure if anybody else has this problem, but every time I add my link to this link-up, it tells me there’s an error and that I’ve not included a back-link to your blog when I definitely have. Anyway, it still shows up on the list, but I wanted to let you know in case others have the same trouble. It must be an issue with InLinkz.)
Sammy @ Peace, Love and Ice Cream!
I love that after alllllll of these installments I’m finally getting into this link-up! I just love it! π
Is that quote from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation?!?! π Or am I totally off?
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Happy to have you on board, Sammy! π And nope! Not NLCV… It’s actually from Disney’s Up!
Katie@LifesNextBigStep
My husband has the apple issue with peaches and other pitted fruit, but it doesn’t happen if he washes it really well and cuts it up to eat it. If he bites into it, game over…just food for thought (see what I did there??) π and those muffins. OMG.
Miss Polkadot
The fact that signs like in #4 exist somewhere in the world – even if not where I live – makes me giddy and restores my faith in humankind. Blackcomb Mountain must be a somewhat heavenly place. (:
No matter what I plan it’ll be at least a good three months in between haircuts for me, too. Every time. And no wild changes for me, either. I always say I would but then … can’t part ways with my long locks.
Also, I’m not sure who looks cuter: Kaiah or little you. So adorable.
Janessa
SOOO happy about this new recipe. I have had three bananas sitting in the fridge for God knows how many weeks, searching for a good banana-something-or-other recipe. Spoons to the rescue! π
I greatly appreciate the landscape photos; I haven’t been on a road trip since last year and they reminded me of what dire need I am in.
Christina @ The Athletarian
Kaiah’s eyes. OMG. Once I got to that pic of her I forgot about everything else you wrote in this post (no offence!!). She’s just so beautiful. Like my heart actually stopped.
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
That’s how I feel when I see The Prince! <3
Rachel
I used to have that same issue with apples and pineapple. I could eat them cooked but never raw. .. are you unable to eat them cooked? I looked it up, it has something to do with the pollen in them and if you have an allergy to that pollen. I WILL say that after switching to a paleo diet, my allergies to both fruits and my seasonal allergies disappeared π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I don’t get -itchy- after eating cooked apples, but I’m going to avoid them for now to see if it makes a difference on the rash I get on my face. That’s great to hear that yours cleared up, though! I used to have a way easier time dealing with my own allergies, so it might be time to make some dietary adjustments myself…
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine
That picture is too cute! As you know Im not quite ready for the holidays, but I do love fall when it comes. I just want to enjoy summer as long as it lasts- I hate the cold winter!
Chris
Thanks for letting me join in on the 94th installment of Thinking Out Loud!
There are lots of words to the over the rainbow song. I know this because that was the song I danced with my mom to at my wedding. It was a long song. A really really long song. =P
jane
Your apple issue reminds me of my sister. She has multiple food intolerances. Whenever she eats apples, peaches, pineapples, and certain berries she gets a really irritated and scratchy throat. With her it only happens when the fruits are raw (probably due to the enzymes in the fruit). So, applesauce and peach pie are all good. Maybe it’s something similar with you. π
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
I have a feeling that it might be π And while I really wish it wasn’t the case, it’ll be worth avoiding if it makes me feel better.
Mary Frances
Ugh, I feel like I should know that quote! My friends use it all.the.time. Can’t blame them either π
You rocked the cute/gorgeous look. Actually, you still rock it. Can my TBT be that adorable?
Caitlin
I think you would look gorgeous with a pixie cut, but I also understand the just doing what you always do thing. Every few years I chop my hair, but between those times? Just trim it please haha. Those rainbows are beautiful. I feel that way about all road trips no matter the length…as soon as I start recognizing stuff I want to be done whether I’ve been in the car for 2 hours or 7 haha
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Guess who just ran out to buy Heir of Fire! π Totally thought of ya!
Katie
Aww okay the “no foul language” sign is just too cute. And so is your puppyyyyy!
