Intros are hard.
I’ve already spent something like 20 minutes trying to come up with an intro to this post, and I’m no closer now than I was when I started. Well, that’s only partially true. The truth is that I spent about 20 seconds trying to come up with an intro before getting distracted by YouTube… and Google… and my inbox… but that’s not the point. The point is, I’m still not quite sure how to start and this needs to get this done, so we’re just going to skip the formalities and drive dive right in to everything.
I think I may have opened Pandora’s Box, and I’m not talking about the adorable charm bracelets…
I’m talking about the fact that I may or may not have introduced my mom to the wonderfully addicting black hole that is Sephora. Let me play it out for you. So yesterday was Mother’s Day…
We were originally planning to head out to the lake and do some BBQing, but I guess no one was really feeling it because the clouds rolled in and we pretty much instantly used that as an excuse to stay home. No problem, we had backup plans – or at least we made some up as we went along.
Instead of time at the lake, we decided to spend some time at the mall – a girl’s day shopping date, if you will. So after scarfing down some lunch (everyone knows you shouldn’t go shopping on an empty stomach), we headed out to see what the wonderful world of retail had to offer.
Turns out, not much. I don’t know if it’s just that strange in-betweeny time of the year, but we honestly didn’t come across anything that caught our eyes.Β That is, until we went to Sephora…
Now, you guys know I love all things beauty related. To be honest, I think the beauty junkie side of me is becoming a lot more dominant than the foodie side of me. But I digress. The point is, I could talk makeup for hours on end with anyone who’s willing to listen.Β My mom, on the other hand, likes makeup, but keeps things pretty basic. That’s okay. I can worth with basic, especially with Urban Decay’s help…
Long story short, we walked out of Sephora a little over an hour later with plenty of goodies in tow, and my mom is already talking about going back.Β What have I done?!
After that, we had a nice chat over coffee…
… before heading home for dinner and a movie. Brave was on TV, and my mom had never seen it so I figured watching it together would be the perfect way to end Mother’s Day.
The only problem was that we both ended up bawling our eyes out. Dang Disney tear-jerkers. Ahh well, it was still a marvelous Mother’s Day.
Happy Monday, friends!
. – . – . – .
What did you do for Mother’s Day?
Do movies make you cry? I’m not usually a crier, but dang… this one got me good.
Favorite Disney Pixar film? Finding Nemo or Wall-E.
Trudy
Sephora at West Ed is one of my faves! So huge!
kris
I’m glad to read you and you mom had a great mothers day! Although you miiight have been a bit of a bad influence…jkjk π I wish my mom was more into makeup, but I guess it’s alright since I have a sister who adores the stuff.
I’m not a huge movie crier, but it still hits me every once in a while. I didn’t think too much about Brave before I watched it, but I’m so glad I did. I loved it! Finding Nemo still has to be one of my all time faves though. Which is why I’m soo excited about Finding Dory coming out in 2015! Such a ways away!! π
Parita
Yes, movies make me cry! So do emotional TV commercials. Haha. It makes my husband laugh. π
Glad you had a great Mother’s Day. Sounds like how I would’ve spent it if we were in the same city!
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli
I’m pretty basic when it comes to makeup, but I’ve also never been inside a Sephora before and have a tendency to start new obsessions based on an attraction to “pretty things” so yeah, I’d probably be JUST like your mom!! Haha! I can’t even remember the last time my mom and I had a mama-daughter shopping day…that needs to happen soon! She had to work yesterday, but my sister and I surprised her pretty big when we showed up unexpectedly! She totally confessed that she thought we had forgotten about the holiday! Mission…ACCOMPLISHED! I love surprises but even more, I love surprising others…the look on her face when we walked in was priceless! And she’s so excited about the spa gift certificate that we got her. I couldn’t believe it when she told us that she’s NEVER had a massage before!
I’ve still yet to see all of Brave! I got it from Red Box once, but didn’t have time to finish it before it was due back…yeah, I’m so cheap that I wouldn’t pay another buck to keep it one more night! Lol Favorite Pixar movies: A Bug’s Life and Monsters Inc!

Surprises are the BEST! I surprised my mom at work one year and it was even better because she had forgotten it was her birthday… so I walked in there and she was like… what?!? It’s not my birthday! π―
Sabrina @ Nutritiously Sweet
Aww looks like you had a nice day with your Mommy! I made my mom a paleo breakfast and we ate/ chatted in the garden… then I had to work, but it was a nice morning!
Ashley @ AlmostVegGirlie
I love window shopping in Sephora but I’ve never bought anything there because a lot of it’s so expensive! I have been really curious about the tooth whitening device they sell there since I think it would do a much better job than the kits, but I haven’t been willing to make the investment.
This was actually the first Mother’s Day I haven’t spent with my mom…ever. My freshman year of college, my family made a day trip on Mother’s Day to visit me (and pack up some of my stuff so it wouldn’t be overwhelming on move-out day haha) and then last year I finished with finals early so I got to be home with her. But this year, it fell at an awkward time right before finals and I really needed to get my study on and finish a paper so I just stayed up here. But her birthday is this Thursday, and luckily I’ll be home in time to celebrate it with her!
Jessie
Yay for spending time with your lovely Mamma! Like your mom, I’m not huge with makeup, however I could spend hours upon hours in Sephora! Love that store.. and wish Kuwait had one! Stupid Kuwait, Ha Ha!
lindsay
i need to go to that store with my mom. SHe is so good at making me girly. I am not! LOL! And i like the disney, coffee, and mall date. It’s way more motherly and daughterly (is that a word?)
Ja @ Ja on the RUN
What a great way to spend mother’s day! I love Sephora! π
Sarah
I miss Sephora! I definitely think I will have to go there when I visit my parents this summer.
Speaking of Brave, did you see Merida’s ‘Disney makeover’? http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2013/05/10/braves-merida-gets-a-disney-make-over/ [hopefully this comment goes through with a link!]
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Oh wow… I didn’t see that, but it kind of makes me sad. I much preferred the original Merida π
Brittany @ FreckledNettles
It sounds like you had a marvelous Mother’s Day. I myself am a Sephora lover. You and your mom have great taste. π
P.S. The card is adorable!
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl
Sounds like a really fun day even though you didn’t get to BBQ. Shopping with my mom and Starbucks actually sounds like a perfect Mother’s Day. My very favorite disney movie is The Little Mermaid.
Sara @ Nourish and Flourish
Love love love the Naked palette! Great choice. π As materialistic as it sounds, I think my favorite mother-daughter activity is shopping–especially when it involves a stop at Sephora. My mom and I can spend hours in there “playing.” In fact, about a week ago, we swung by to refill our foundation (we both use the Bare Minerals compact), and ended up walking out an hour later with far more “accessories” than we’d planned. That place never fails to rob my wallet! I’m so glad you were able to properly introduce your mom to “the girl’s candyland” (my mom’s words), although, I’m sure her wallet feels otherwise!
I still haven’t seen Brave! My favorite Disney movies are the classics: Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, although I also love the Pixar films. Finding Nemo and Monster’s Inc. are two that never fail to make me feel all warm and fuzzy. π
Happy Monday, Amanda! <3
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin
Haha that’s so funny about getting your mom hooked on Sephora! A girls day of shopping sounds like the perfect way to spend the day though. For Mother’s Day I cooked my mom crab legs for dinner and then we watched Silver Linings Playbook together.
Oh my gosh, I’m such a cry baby in movies. One time I was watching Armageddon for the first time with my guy friend and I blubbered like a baby all over him… it was kind of embarrassing haha.
I’m not sure of the difference between a Pixar movie and a Disney Pixar movie, but I love Ratatouille and the Incredibles!
Sunnie@ModernGirlNutrition
Such a fun day! I used to love ULTA, until I went to Sephora. It’s amazing. And Brave was such a good movie- those Disney ones always make me cry haha
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
So, life plan: I’m going to come to Edmonton, you’re going to take me to Sephora, and you’re gonna educate me on beauty things. Deal? deal.
I loved Brave…that movie was amazing! I never used to be a crier, but in the last couple of years…god. A well timed commercial can make me tear up. When I’m happy about something, I’ll cry. Slightly ridiculous. I managed to hold back tears when watching Brave, but if I had been watching it with my mom? I would have been done. And in need of a mascara reapplication.
Disney Pixar…I do love me some Finding Nemo. So excited for Finding Dory!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Deal! Definitely a deal. Like I said… I’ve got that spare room π
Sophia
What a lovely day you had π I am such a cryer lol- too many movies make me cry- the latest was life of pi and the perks of being a wallflower- loved both of them so much (they are two of my favourite books too) My family was in the hospital with my brother on Sunday- but I made a big picnic feast of frittata crusty focaccia and butter, smoked cod cucumber and mayo salad, artichokes marinated in oil and a big tiramisu to share as well as apple cake. Mum and I had a girls night together though- we watched life of pi and the Hobbit- was nice to get time with her π Happy belated Mothers day to Your Mama! Xo Sophia
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
And to your momma as well! I watched both The Hobbit and The Life of Pi with my parents a few weeks back too! Definitely some good picks for movies right there. And The Life of Pi is one of my favorite books as well π I’ve been waiting for them to make it into a movie since the day it came out, and I’m so glad they did a good job with it!
Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health
Sounds like you had a perfect girly Mother’s Day! I wish I could have seen my Mom but she’s too far away right now. Brave sounds like such a cute movie! I haven’t seen a Disney (or Pixar) movie in a while but The Lion King made me cry like a baby!
